Some people thought that the Barney costumes from 1997 to now (except for the first half of 2010-2011 Birthday Bash shows) looks very similar since he looked more recognisable compared to what he first appeared in its Backyard Gang videos... but the difference that i noticed for the newer costumes is his eyes that got into his fourth wall act by looking at the camera more and interacting/singing to the viewers, the pre-2004 Barney costumes in some promotions can have his eyes sometimes edited as he is actually looking at the camera properly.
Another problem with '90 Barney was the continued angular and sharp design of the face. Although they did choose a softer color for Barney, his face and body were still not quite rounded enough, creating contrast with the magenta. It lacked the primitive and charming look of the first Barney, as well as the round, softness of the successors. Paired with haunting eyes and unflattering movements, it's the awkward teen phase of Barneys.

My favorite Barney costumes are:
The Season 2 model.
Both 1994 models.
The BGA model.
The Season 5 model.
The Season 6 models. Especially the second model from said season.
I feel like that birthday bash suit is a good reminder not to do drugs. Sure that second to last image of barney on the right in the C column is also a good reminder because he just looks dead but birthday bash takes the cake.
As for my favorite suits...the movie, the stage, and the waiting for Santa suit.
Personally, I liked all three BYG costumes. I say "three" because the 1991-current costume is the Barney we know and love.
I sadly grew up with dead Barney as you say xd but I love the "sing and dance with Barney" one, his eyes looked so bright and sweet... and alive. Something modern Barney doesn't have

I wasn't aware of the different Barney costumes as a kid outside of the Backyard Gang series, and was mainly used to the 1991- Barney. I was really weirded out by the first Barney when I was in the target age, but I came to appreicate the costume later on. One of my first jumpscares was seeing Barney's face in Waiting For Santa after he came out of the chimney (that scared me too, especially with having not been used to Barney having a deep voice.) I kind of treated my Waiting For Santa video like it it was the VHS from The Ring, and was scared for a long time of watching the Campfire Sing-Along video I had. The Imagination Island/Live in New York City Barney is my favourite - it was used in two of my favourite Barney videos when I was at the target age, and among the ones I enjoyed as an older kid long after I became more interested in other characters.
My favorite suit is the 2nd backyard gang suit cause its what I grew up on, so I was kinda hurt to see him in D 😂
My favourite costume would be from Barney Live! From New York City

Tbh Barney and the backyard gang is amazing and I loved all that Barney but Barney and friends season 1-3 are goated and I’m a 2001 kid and even I know it’s goated
I like birthday bash but not the first design
The suit with the thinner smaller mouth right after the movie (the one you moved up to A) is the one from Season 5, and the one right after from Let’s Go to the Zoo was actually used in Season 6

I’m gonna be honest, the latest version of the Barney costume is my least favorite (I don’t even consider birthday bash an official costume). They made the legs longer, yet the tail was shorter. From what I’ve heard, it was supposed to make it easier for the performer to move, but it made Barney look so awkward. The connecting ankles was a major improvement though.
While the 1990 costume is a bit weird looking, I still like it, because I grew up with it more alongside the 1988-1989 original costume, and the ones from Barney & Friends seasons 1 and 2, and Barney Live! in New York City/Imagination Island. All the others just blend into one another for me simply because everything from 1996 to 2017 aren't my era of Barney.
I still don’t know what’s worse Vee thought it was a good idea to base the costumes off of the Hit cartoon designs instead of the more recognizable tv show versions that look objectively better or the fact Hit just let them do it for some reason
A decision I don’t think anyone will fully understand 💀
Hey hedgeonstage I was wondering what your schedule is going to be for the rest of the reviews for the seasons of Barney and friends?
I feel as though each Barney costume was unique on their own, however the third costume from the end of Barney and the Backyard Gang and the first two seasons of Barney and Friends has to be my favorite! I agree I just want to give him a big hug! 💜
If a Baby Bop and BJ costume tier list were created, I'm sure you'll do videos on those.
All I know is, their original "tall" designs would go STRAIGHT to D Tier 😂

Before you, the only Barney reviews ever was on Barney’s Great Adventure and maybe a handful of the Home Videos like Waiting for Santa or Be My Valentine: Love Barney. We need more channels like you on TH-cam covering childhood shows.

Idk why, but when I saw the picture of Barney with both arms up in the air when you were talking about the one costume where he’s only got the three movements, I just found it so funny. Anyway, for me I like a lot of the older costumes from the Bob West/David Joyner era. There was the costume in Sing and Dance with Barney where I feel like his head is just way too big so it’s one of my least favorite costumes during their time. For the Dean Wendt/Carey Stinson era I’m not a huge fan of the Season 7 costume. I feel like his head is too small in that costume. The 1990 Barney suit I actually think is my favorite from the Backyard Gang era (I know you strongly dislike it, but it’s alright. It’s not for everyone.) As for my favorite, it’s gotta be between Barney’s Great Adventure, Imagination Island/Live! in New York City, and I believe you said it was the Season 4 costume (the one similar to Imagination Island, but with a more movable mouth). As always though, great video and you definitely got it right by saying the original Birthday Bash outfit is the worst. I’m really not sure what they were thinking with that one.
I’m starting to kinda spot the different suits as I revisit the series. But I gotta say my fave suit was the suit used in Sing and Dance with Barney (my fave special). It just was absolutely perfect and friendly and cuddly looking. I THINK it was used in Season 5, but when I saw that special my thought was immediately, “Barney looks absolutely wonderful here.”.
I like Season 5 and 6 they we're my favorite.
Aww, sad that 1990 suit is not higher up! To me that suit seems more like a caricature of Barney, almost a spoof even. Or maybe a hand puppet of Barney if it were blown up.
I love how active Voss was in the suit, you can’t watch those videos without thinking “dude is gonna topple over!”

Yes!! My favorites were definitely 1991-1997 specifically the 94-95 something so special about those costumes. THE BLINKING made Barney real to me. Also are the pictures of 1991 Barney being used in 1996??

oh absolutely, they had to switch costumes off by year early on bc they’d get worn out very fast. Back then they were essentially made and sculpted by hand, so they always came out looking vastly different, but eventually they made a skull that allowed them to replicate the head near perfectly each time with only slight visual differences

Awesome videos always! I actually forgot about the Birthday Bash costume until now lol! And now I would like to keep continuing to forget about it!😆😆 In all seriousness, if I had to pick a favorite, it will be a tie between season 3 and the imagination Island/live in New York City costume! The era of Barney in general is just the Golden Age of Barney imo!😁👌
Pretty good ranking on your favorite Barney costume design my favorite Barney costume design would have to be the season 13 Barney for obvious reasons and a close second is the season 3 Barney second if you include the other Barney which it's blinking mechanism is easier to notice like in I can be a firefighter and gone fishing.
I have to agree that the first attempt of the cartoon illustration costume from Barney Live in concert birthday bash looks kind of ugly even the face I can understand that it was based on the 2005 design, but that doesn't excuse for of how bad it is I prefer the second Barney cartoon illustration costume design better.
I never noticed the blinking until you showed this. But yes when barney stopped blinking i was already growing out of him. He seemed more like a plastic doll than a live character
Season 6 is my favorite.
The 96’ costume used in used in most of the videos during that year (except for “once upon a time”) and for “musical scrapbook” the following year is the best one to me 💯

Honestly, for me, I think the main issue with a lot of the HiT era Barney costumes are the eyes. It's very hard to describe, but they give Barney this more mature adult look, like he's supposed to be a teacher or parental figure of some sort, which admittedly lines up with where HiT was taking Barney at the time. From my understanding, they wanted to downplay Barney's childlike goofy personality for a more teacher-like sorta one, basically a real mentor to the kids, and the costumes really push that. Although I grew up heavily with the HiT era, yeah, the Barney costumes during that era were always a bit offputting to me. Not bad, just offputting.
As for Barney's body performance, I think that also had something to do with HiT's direction of the character, aforementioned reasons above. From other Barney performances I've seen Carey do outside of the TV show, it's pretty close to David Joyner's Barney; obviously not the full nine yards, but it's close. It's a shame Barney became such a stilted character later on, especially by the time Riff came on and they changed EVERYTHING about the show, Barney just simply wasn't Barney anymore.
(Also, I appreciate you acknowledging Barney's three main gestures/poses during the HiT era, cause it's so true. With all due respect to Carey of course, he do be doing that every episode from then on. 😅)

That Barney 1990 scared the crap out of me I remember had goes to school I ran upstairs my sisters drag me downstairs.
I was hoping you would do a video on this. Personally, my favorite costume would have to be the Imagination Island/Live in Ny. While I do agree that the mouth movement is kind of hard to notice, I still think it's one of the nicest looking costumes. Yes, I agree that the HIT Era Barney costumes are hella bland looking. Never really like them all that much. They're not terribly made, but they just don't look all that special or great, honestly. Plus, no offense to Carey. He seems to be a nice guy, and I enjoy hearing his time with the character and show, but man, his performance made Barney so bland/meh compared to David Joyner. Also, yeah, the Barney Bash costume is the worst.

I like the 1990 version of Barney Costume
I was born in 2000's and I actually first Watched the Season 3-6 Barney and then when My Dad bought a DVD from The Season 1-2 It became one of my favorite the Season 7-12 well The eye lids were different and obviously the shape if the face but the nasally voice actually fits it for me but I don't really like the style I just Imagine as a Kid that Barney gets older and his voice will be different as time goes on.
The 2004 Barney was scary lol cuz season 9 Barney they had both customers the 2004 and the season 7 costume

Are the 2 suits you mentioned from season 3 not the same? You showed clips from season 3 with both but have one 2nd in S Tier and the other 3rd in A Tier.
they’re not the same. there’d be no point in having two photos of the same thing on a tier list.
I hear you, I was just more so trying to get an understanding if they used 2 suits during the course of season 3 as both those pics you showed clips from season 3. Crazy enough is I grew up literally with each Barney up until the season 6, and some of the differences I’d never noticed as a kid. The subtle differences you noticed got me over here like… ahhh I see.
And we gone fight with that Birthday Bash Barney next to my 90s BYG Barney. lol 😂 That thing was just 😳
