I understand. Unfortunate and heartbreaking crap happened today, and since we work like this nowadays, I tried to find some kind of consolation on youtube. So randomly I came across a Barney episode and wanted to watch it, without context. I can't believe that listening to that purple goof talk in such a gentle and supportive way was the only thing on youtube that made me half smile
Barney was my childhood growing up. I had Barney toys, a Barney PC game, some VHS tapes, both my brother and I had custom made Barney cartoons for our birthdays. Watching this video brings back fond memories. It really put a smile on my face. Thank you for all you do. And a Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
I was a very big Barney fan and I literally screamed when I seen your posted this. I’ve been waiting so long for you to do a Barney video. My favorite Barney video in particular was Barney’s Big Surprise
Even as a child, it concerned me greatly that parents left their children with a plush dinosaur after school! Even if the parents knew he came to life (which was only in the kids' imagination), the only help he had was BABY Bop! Even when the only slightly older BJ joined the show, he was not equipped to take care of up to six children at a time!
If I saw that 2010 design of Barney when the character was live in concert when I was younger, it would've been for-certain nightmare fuel. But now as a young adult, I just can't unsee it and its 'uncanny valley' proportioned facial features resembling an actual walking dinosaur hahaha.
I was definitely a Barney kid, and so was my husband growing up. Now my daughter adores him, and it's awesome to share that with her. She watches Barney's Great Aventure at least 3 times a day.
I would love a video about the Barney performers and maybe even about some of the kids on the show. I looked up to a lot of the kids on the show especially seasons 1-3 and it would be cool to see a sort of "where are they now".
Dan, if this video had to be summed up in one magnificent word… Stupendous!💜💚💜💚 This has gotta be an early Christmas gift, ever since I started commenting on wanting a Barney evo, there have since been numerous video essays on the big purple dino. All of them wonderful of course. But THIS video is THE video I’ve been waiting for! Thank you, Dan!

Absolutely LOVED Barney when I was a little kid. Had an entire Barney plush I'd take with me everywhere. I remember trying to memorize all the songs for fun. The "Mister Sun" song is one of the songs I still remember to this day.
Hi, I'd like to say that I really enjoy your content. Compared to Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers, it's much harder to find out about the history of Barney. Thank you for giving me a chance to learn about a character that was so fundamental to my early childhood.
I was a Barney kid, I loved all. I used to watch the movie all the time, still sing the "it's cold" song whenever it's cold and the Christmas specials have a special place in my heart.
I grew up in a Barney HOUSEHOLD for sure! You didn't mention it, but the Barney's Big Surprise was my favorite of the recorded live shows! I would LOVE for you to cover more about the people who actually played Barney, there were so many rumors going around as kids. I'd love to learn their real stories! I would also love for you to include an evolution of the side characters such as BJ and Baby Bop since they changed quite a bit in my Barney days as well, and I'd love to learn more about how their costumes worked! I love that you're branching out into nostalgic kids tv shows, it's great to have such a great blast from the past! Thanks for all you do!
I just have to say, when you get really excited and start laughing, it makes my day. Your videos are always so informative, but I mainly watch now because of your enthusiasm. Keep up the great work!
One of my earliest memories is of my parents singing the "I love you, you love me" song to me when I was probably three years old with a singing barney toy. Later, incidentally around 2010 (maybe it had something to do with the costume change), everyone my age somehow gained a seemingly random hatred of Barney. I was in middle school at the time and heard all sorts of rumors that Barney had tripped on a log, fallen and cursed on live television, which was untrue as far as I know, but it was just a weird rumor kids around that time spread. I just don't know why everyone chose Barney to hate on:(
I can assure you every rumor you’ve heard regarding Barney is untrue. The cursing on live tv is the easiest to debunk simply because the show didn’t air live, even dialogue for live appearances is pre-recorded. Not to mention the VO actors are consummate professionals… they held Barney to a high standard and knew any slip-ups would jeopardize the brand. The hatred started after the first video was released. They received a negative review in people magazine, and the critic really took it to the extreme… went after the creators (two Dallas moms who were teachers). So, it predates Vee Corp’s questionable design choice… it got worse as Barney became mainstream. For some reason people (still) have a problem with a dinosaur being purple, friendly, and teaching kids love, respect, good manners and other important lessons.
My hatred of Barney stemmed from having a talking doll of him that i swear to god was possessed! It would just start talking in the other room even though it was turned off and appeared in rooms we swear we didn't put it in. That little purple prick even woke me up in the middle of the night from across my bedroom. Luckily it never said anything that wasn't supposed to be in its programmed repertoire but it still freaked us out so bad we burned it. good times 😏
OH yeah, i was not a barney kid when i was little (i tolerated the show, but only recall watching it at a very young age, and there was other shows that i was much more obsessed with at that age) but i remember back in grade 2 or 4 recognising the tune used for "i love you you love me" in a name that tune type thing in an afterschool program i took in elementary as, well, "i love you you love me" and they assumed that i WAS a barney kid based on that and the fact that i was wearing a purple shirt at the time. Also barney hate has pretty much existed for as long as barney itself have existed, If i had a nickle for every time an Edgy grade 4 kids in the playground would sing "i hate you, you hate me, lets team up and kill barney" l'd probably be rich lol. Also while i dont think i have heard the cursed on live television rumour, i do recall hearing a rumour about a dude that was in the barney suit getting arrested for stashing drugs in the tail although i have no idea if its true or not (probably not)
Another excellent video, Dan! I remember having that one Barney on Broadway VHS tape with the "Apples and Bananas" song on it, lol. Also, I've never seen the original Barney or that newer, off-looking one until this video. Those designs are CURSED!!!! Do you think you would consider doing an "Evolution of Statler and Waldorf" video to continue in the vain of childhood icons, as well as your Muppets videos? :D
I was totally a Barney kid growing up and still love him to this day. 💜💚 Never thought I would see a Barney evolution video from you but I'm soo happy you did. Such a (as Barney would say) Stupendous video Dan! Also didn't expect you to mention the nightmares that was Birthday Bash Barney. Thank goodness after a while they changed the costume to be more like the TV show.
This is why I have mad respect for actors, because they ARE the characters, and to see how much complexity even with such simple childlike character designs as Barney has to be performed and make a more refined costume as time goes on will always fascinate me because of different artstyles and suits suited for each performance
I love Barney. I loved him as a kitten and I still love him today. I would imagine the in person barney meet and greets will return once we get a handle on the pandemic. But it's nice to know he's still around
Wow. I was most definitely a Barney kid. We had the original tapes too and I LOVED them. We were the first kids on our block to get the first stuffed Barney toys. I would watch the tv series all through kindergarten and first grade. I remember when my favorite child author and illustrator Tomie DePaola was a guest star.
My VHS tapes were Barney, Fraggle Rock, and whatever Disney movies my mom had managed to pick up when they came out of the Vault, so it's a lot of fun to see the Barney evolutions!
Waiting for Santa was my first Barney tape, but something about his laugh booming out of a chimney in a dark room gave me nightmares my entire childhood.
I didn’t realize Dan and I were so close in age. I was an obsessive Barney kid! There was an episode of the show where they sang the song “De Colores” and I was completely mesmerized by it. That memory has stuck with me all my life.
There wasn't even any Barney Dub on my country for what i remember; but i still enjoyed your video even without the nostalgia anchor. Your laugh is so sincere and your work is great thank for this video!
I grew up on Barney too, and I fondly remember his movie being awesome. He's just so lovable and huggable while being JUUUST the slightest bit creepy haha

I loved this video. I love how you were talking so passionately about each Barney and each vhs! Here in the UK we got Barney a bit later, though he did have a show at our biggest theme park Alton Towers in the early 2000s, among some other appearances. However when my daughter was a toddler, around 2014, she quickly learned how to use the TH-cam kids app and discovered Barney all by herself. She fell in love with him! I picked up some of the vhs tapes for her off eBay and we were lucky to catch the end of Barney’s popular era, around 2015/16, as we saw him at a holiday camp and a live tour in our town. Just introducing my youngest to him now and he loves him too. ☺️❤️
barney is why i know the song "home on the range" and why i sing it actually at random unprompted. I remember i had a christmas barney toy my cousins tried to take from me. Me and my sister had barney beach towels that caused some uproar at school- a first grader who still likes barney? and brought her barney towel to the school field trip to the beach? goodness no! this turned into me liking barney all the way till the 5th grade out of spite and angst. That is a real sentence you just read. this was such a fun video to come across- i came to your channel because of your cameos on Defunctland, so this was a great first impression XD
We just discovered your channel a couple weeks ago and we just love watching your videos to have a good laugh and enjoy your comedy. Thanks for your content!
I grew up watching Barney the Dinosaur. My parents recorded a whole bunch of the old episodes of Barney for me to watch. We also had a few of the Barney home videos like The Backyard Show, Camping with Barney, Barney in Concert, you name it. I also had a Sleepytime Barney and I used to take it with me everywhere I went. I had that for over 10 years. Still to this day, even though I'm 28 years old I'm still a Barney kid at heart.
I still remember the 1st time I saw Waiting for Santa as a child, I was extremely confused since it wasn’t the same as regular Barney, and then when I actually saw Barney in the video I was so terrified that I didn’t watch it again for another 2 or 3 years. But after seeing that 1st costume it looks really does look more friendly by comparison. Hate to admit it but I was a big Barney fan. Being from Ireland, Barney (and Bear in the Big Blue House) was one of the only American preschool tv shows I watched. My favourite VHS was definitely Barney Live (1994). Great video, nice to see the occasional non Disney characters video as well, keep it up 👍🏻
Some of my favorite childhood memories involve watching the Barney movies about Halloween and Christmas around those times of the year to get pumped for the holiday season!
Oh my gosh, I ADORED Barney in Concert! That was my most watched Barney VHS too! I think it's actually the first time Baby Bop made an appearance. She was my favorite, so if that's really the case, I guess it makes sense as to why I watched that one so much. I love that you talked about Barney's costumes throughout the years. Barney was pretty much my first obsession. He kept my mom sane, since almost every time he was on, I was glued to the TV. I still have my Barney and Baby Bop dolls from babyhood too. XD
I was born in 1994, so I Barney live around 1998! I still appreciate Barney as an adult having grown up with him on my tv. He's initially the reason why purple became my favorite color and that became a lift of it's own
That 2010 barney....it looks like they where trying to base it off REAL dinosaurs....but uh someone got ahold of the fun powder and made that monstrosity

ohgod, i drove my parents crazy with barney as a kid. my blankets, curtains, everything was barney and my mom even said i wore a baby bop costume that i would scream and cry if you tried to refuse me from wearing. only time she ever got to wash it was while i was sleeping lol
Yo Barney was literally part of my childhood since I was like 2, this is literally such a big nostalgia, I remember going to see that show at universal when I was 8 and it was a lot of fun.
I was definitely a Barney kid in the 90s. Aside from Barney's color changing from the original videos to the TV show, the other major change I remember was BJ and Baby Bop were originally full-size like Barney and then they suddenly became more child size. I was so confused as a little kid. haha
The two teachers that created Barney actually went to my dad ( He was a local TV producer at the time) with the idea. But the company he worked for just didnt have the budget for what they wanted to do, so he had to say no, but he referred them to the company that ultimately did buy up the idea. My dads company liked the idea, just yeah, no money no go. So they tried to do a similar program, with the small budget they had. It was called Rosie O'Hen. About a big blue hen. I got to be in an episode too. But obviously, only one of the shows did well lol
I cannot remember which video it was from, But to THIS DAY, my family still sings the song “She’s my sister, I love my sister” as an inside joke. My sister and I wore out those Barney tapes as a kid as well. Kids these days just don’t know haha
I was OBSESSED with those Barney tapes as a kid!! Three wishes was my absolute favorite. Also I have the elf rap from the Christmas special MEMORIZED 🤦🏻♀️. Also that 2010 scary Barney looks like Frank Sinatra in the worst way 😂
I was born in 1987, so I was a Barney kid as well. Back when I was a kid, we only had local channels, so during the week PBS was my jam, and Barney was a big part in that. I actually convinced my mom several times to sing "I Love You" before bedtime, and even in the Spanish version sang in "Barney Goes Camping." My mother was, and still is, a saint. I'll be 35 this coming April, and Barney is still one of my most favorite guilty pleasures. I have several of the songs on my MP3 player, and I happily belt along with them.
As a toddler I really liked Barney, but I was TERRIFIED of the early iteration. I called him "low voice Barney" and would have an emotional breakdown if the Barney tape my parents put on for me had that version 🤣
barneys birthday bash 2010 was the first time ive seen barney in person, i was so young and was happy i finally seen him and there was a segment where all the characters walk down the stage to meet you and i was the first kid barney waned to hug, he gives the best hugs ever
I was too old for their demographic when Barney was super big but I spent so much time babysitting my brothers that I had so many of these tapes memorized. I ended up low key really loving Baby Bop. I still hum "Mr. Knickerbocker" to myself sometimes at 40 (oh lordy). I would love to hear stories about the preformers and voice actors for Barney.
Why in the world did I watch this? I don't even like Barney and yet somehow you made it entertaining enough that I watched the whole thing. So kudos to you. ^_^
Barney was huge for me growing up, thanks for doing this! I completely forgot he was at Universal - I think by the time I actually went I was a tad old for it, but in retrospect I'd have loved a photo with my favourite purple dinosaur!
I loved Barney as a kid. It brings back memories of watching it on PBS kids before heading to daycare. And yes I understand the Barney to Power Rangers pipeline lol Also that Barney from the 2010 show is very scary. It's giving Sonic the Hedgehog movie before the Internet bullied the studio to reanimate it
Great Adventure was a staple in my house. It's one of those movies where I can probably recite the whole thing from memory. Cool to see how the costume has changed over time!
For the Radio City show, David Joyner performed the character onstage and Carey Stinson performed the character during the transitions and balcony scenes
The 2010 version creeped me out when I watched this video! I was like.... "Was that made out of a Barbie doll or something???" and I literally almost skipped that part of the video because of that.
Barney kid present here! I even got to see him live when I was 4, and to this date, I still kinda need to mentally sing some of his songs for remembering things like the alphabet or the order of the colors of the rainbow 😅 I never saw Barney's old dark purple design before, though. While slightly terrifying, learning about it was also really interesting xD P.S: I discovered your channel a few days ago, and I'm officially addicted to your videos and bright personality. Hi from your new fan, Dan! 😊👋
I was afraid to watch this because I was afraid there would be Barney bashing, I finally watched it and am so pleasantly surprised! I wasn't a Barney fan growing up, but he means alot to some of my friend's childhoods. Thanks for being so upbeat and nice in the video Dan as always
I wasn’t really a “Barney kid” per se (as in not a super fan, that was reserved for Care Bears) but I do remember watching it a lot growing up. My favorite song would probably have to be “Mr. Knickerbocker”, mainly because it’s the one of the only songs aside from the theme and “I Love You” that I can recall. I’d always cry during the “I Love You” song, but I could never really put a finger on why it made me feel that way. Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of the earnestness of Barney’s vocal delivery and the sweet, simple, lullaby-esque accompaniment. Or perhaps it’s the message itself. The song is a celebration of platonic love. The love that’s shared by friends. The love that a parent has for their child. Barney is the type of friend that every little kid wants to have: fun, engaging, generous, imaginative, and, above all, loving. So when he says he loves us, he means it.
I'm so used to Henson and Disney-quality puppeteering that I've never realized how Barney was just a guy destroying his jaw and neck to make it kind of look like Barney was talking. Great video buddy!

I can't believe that listening to that purple goof talk in such a gentle and supportive way was the only thing on youtube that made me half smile
Barney looks terrifying with that wide eyed stare in Barney’s Live Birthday Bash. I feel like he’s staring into my soul😂
1:04 I can see these designs working for a show with older kids, but yeah, preschoolers would be terrified of the fangs.
It's a very Don Bluth-esque look, which works in a cartoon, but in a suit, that's gonna be seen by tots all across the nation? Probably not.
Barney was my childhood growing up. I had Barney toys, a Barney PC game, some VHS tapes, both my brother and I had custom
made Barney cartoons for our birthdays.
Bruh 🤣
thankfully the kids never got in any trouble
Oh so THAT'S why he's always been known as a purple dinosaur! I was always confused, because he's more of a magenta than a purple.
I always thought he was pink
@@cooperminion825 And I thought he was a Clifford-Red in some episodes for some reason.

If I saw that 2010 design of Barney when the character was live in concert when I was younger, it would've been for-certain nightmare fuel. But now as a young adult, I just can't unsee it and its 'uncanny valley' proportioned facial features resembling an actual walking dinosaur hahaha.
Lol. Yeah
I saw the design of Barney back in 2002, and was still afraid. I was terrified and left the live show crying.
@@opossumsauce4472 SAME! I honestly still have nightmares.
He looks like something out of _Berserk_ , and that's the last thing you want associated with Barney.
I was definitely a Barney kid, and so was my husband growing up. Now my daughter adores him, and it's awesome to share that with her. She watches Barney's Great Aventure at least 3 times a day.
I would love a video about the Barney performers and maybe even about some of the kids on the show. I looked up to a lot of the kids on the show especially seasons 1-3 and it would be cool to see a sort of "where are they now".
agree
Well 2 of the kids were demi lavato and Selena Gomez so we know what they are up to now and days lol
Barney in concert was definitely a childhood favorite. The shabby farm animals were my favorite lol.
Dan, if this video had to be summed up in one magnificent word… Stupendous!💜💚💜💚
This has gotta be an early Christmas gift, ever since I started commenting on wanting a Barney evo, there have since been numerous video essays on the big purple dino. All of them wonderful of course. But THIS video is THE video I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you, Dan!
Wow! I was a Barney kid. My two favorites: Barney Visits the Library and Barney Goes to the Movies. Yup! So fun. And the send off nod to the song was perfect Dan... made me tear up... darn nostalgia. Keep them coming Dan. You rock!!
It would be awesome if you could do a follow up video on Barney's voice actors and costume performers
David Voss and David Joyner are perfect examples of costume performers and bob west and duncan Brennan are perfect examples of voice actors.
Fun fact, two of Barney's VA's worked for Chuck E. Cheese's. Bob West was Jasper and Pasqually, with Duncan Brannan playing Chuck E. himself
@@SBTCP I can't argue with you there although I personally only grew up with Bob West and David Joyner as Barney
@@alexdionisos I know pretty cool isn't it?

Ah the nostalgia!! I loved Barney as a kid. Yes the white tapes. I do remember the Backyard gang Barney since my parents bought those VHS’s too.
I only remember the trailers at the end some other vhs tapes and suddenly Barney went from annoying but harmless to genuinely disturbing.

Absolutely LOVED Barney when I was a little kid. Had an entire Barney plush I'd take with me everywhere. I remember trying to memorize all the songs for fun. The "Mister Sun" song is one of the songs I still remember to this day.
beautiful installment
thank you for respecting the history of this character
Hi, I'd like to say that I really enjoy your content. Compared to Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers, it's much harder to find out about the history of Barney. Thank you for giving me a chance to learn about a character that was so fundamental to my early childhood.
Hedge!!!!
😊
My kids grew up with Barney … They are probably about your age. I would like to watch a video about the performers and voice performers of Barney!
Great video. I was a Barney kid growing up. Loved the nostalgia this video gave. Would love to see a video on the Barney performers.
Also while i dont think i have heard the cursed on live television rumour, i do recall hearing a rumour about a dude that was in the barney suit getting arrested for stashing drugs in the tail although i have no idea if its true or not (probably not)
@@kirbysuperstaruhh3769 even Mulder made a joke about it in the 1st season of The X Files. That was all the way back in the 90s
At least you had elementary school. The only time when I didn't hear any Barney bashing was when I was with my family
I loved watching Barney every morning in the same channel, it's awesome to see he is still remembered!
Early designs of Barney actually looks really cool
Barney Waiting for Santa was one of my favorite movies but Dan, I’d probably make kid you jealous, I got to see Barney live right after they fixed the switch to the cartoon design & to this day I have kept a handful of the confetti that they release at the end.

I watched the Barney beach vhs tape a million times as a kid, it was my all time favorite tape for a long time. 🧡 Wow thank you for unlocking this memory
XD
“Waiting for Santa” was my favorite as a kid!!!! Besides all of the Disney Singalong Songs lol

I cannot remember which video it was from,
But to THIS DAY, my family still sings the song “She’s my sister, I love my sister” as an inside joke.
Also that 2010 scary Barney looks like Frank Sinatra in the worst way 😂
Your videos never fail to brighten my day and make me laugh :)
My childhood Barney tape was "Oh Brother, She's My Sister"
I love Barney and being almost 34 years old I’m never growing out of Barney! 💜💚💛
And yes I understand the Barney to Power Rangers pipeline lol
Also that Barney from the 2010 show is very scary. It's giving Sonic the Hedgehog movie before the Internet bullied the studio to reanimate it
Great Adventure was a staple in my house. It's one of those movies where I can probably recite the whole thing from memory. Cool to see how the costume has changed over time!
“I wanna talk about everyone’s favorite purple imagination based reptile! That’s right! I’m talking about Barney-“
Figment: Aight, peace out.
THE WAITING FOR SANTA BARNEY THO!! That was my jam as a kid!! 🙌👏
I was at the Radio City show!
I’d love to hear more about the performers behind the character.
I even got to see him live when I was 4, and to this date, I still kinda need to mentally sing some of his songs for remembering things like the alphabet or the order of the colors of the rainbow 😅
I never saw Barney's old dark purple design before, though. While slightly terrifying, learning about it was also really interesting xD
P.S: I discovered your channel a few days ago, and I'm officially addicted to your videos and bright personality. Hi from your new fan, Dan! 😊👋
Oh gosh I saw the white tapes and was instantly brought to my childhood!!
I was afraid to watch this because I was afraid there would be Barney bashing, I finally watched it and am so pleasantly surprised! I wasn't a Barney fan growing up, but he means alot to some of my friend's childhoods. Thanks for being so upbeat and nice in the video Dan as always
Pointing and laughing at how weird, clunky, and badly chroma-keyed the first suit was is okay, right?
