  • Barney went through many looks and faces through the years. Over one hundred Barney costumes were built over the course of thirty plus years. Why did Barney change so much and where are the costumes today? In episode two of Live From Barney's Couch! I tackle those exact questions.
    See what I've collected over the past month! Rarities include an exclusive cow boy Barney plush doll, a Barney's Great Adventure Watch, jumbo BJ plush doll, tour merch, and more!

    I was really sad to see how the original Barney costume deteriorated from mall use, but you're so right, Andrew, after heat and too much moisture from sweating, the foam "dies," it literally crumbles into hard bits. The news about the molded heads was really interesting, thanks for sharing all of that history. ❤️

    • @barney_builder
      @barney_builder  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      They really did use that costume as long as they could, there was a real shortage of costumes back when they were promoting the first videos. It would have been nice to have seen them adopt Phyllis's costume to give the original costume a break!

    • @purity2706
      @purity2706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@barney_builder After hearing your explanation of the history, I think they probably really didn't expect it to take off like it did. I mean, that first costume was very expensive when you consider how they had to take Barney apart after nearly finishing him plus the cost of my design changes and involvement? I worked for many days developing the whole persona including props and Barney outfits and trips to Irene's? My per diem wasn't cheap. Did Irene contract for a set cost? If so, she probably lost money on that first build. Then Lyons Group paid Phyllis and then the threat of lawsuits? It was a mess, huh?
      But your research is impeccable, Andrew, and I really appreciated the history after I was no longer involved in the project. Barney was destined to thrive and had a huge impact on so many young lives. The foundational groundwork for Barney was good and honorable and like I said before, I believe I was supernaturally protected from all the uncomfortable stuff even though some tried to take credit for things they didn't do, I never had to worry about getting sued, did I?😊

    In my imagination I could see everything being kept in some big warehouse somewhere. I just wish there was a way to know for sure what's out there. I would assume Sheryl Leach, Kathy Parker, and Dennis DeShazer have some stuff. Like I imagine they have some of the Barney og Barney dolls used on the show. One of them must have a Barney Bag. I hope Stella's door is still around. Perhaps we might get to see some stuff in the upcoming Barney doc!

      I spoke with an entertainment manager from Universal Orlando shortly after the attraction closed. He said that the suits would be surrendered to Mattel. Judging by how those costumes were looking by the end of the attraction's life, they well past their prime. I suspect that they were just destroyed as there was really no more use for them.

    Pretty good history on the Barney costumes on Barney's couch my favorite particular suit for Barney the dinosaur would have to be season 13 because of the connected feet and what's interesting that this is specially made for, Carery Stinson and speaking of the Jerry Franklin retirement party in 2019 the only footage are the photos and one video where Barney is singing I love you and that's just it no one recorded the entire thing at the very least I'm literally thankful that a couple of Barney costumes are sticking around a little bit longer unlike the other three or four from Barney in the backyard gang and Barney and Friends. Really nice stuff that you got and I have never seen the Barney sippy cups before and even the watch itself and I'm really surprised that you got the 1995 Barney bag maybe someday in future I would have the same thing if the prices don't go over the top on eBay and to provide a reason to put all of my cardboard because I do Customs for another one of my favorite franchises overall pretty good history on the Barney costumes and the stuff that you got.

    I feel like they should have sold/donated the costumes to a museum like Jim Henson's family did with the original Muppets, Barney and friends is one of the most famous and popular children's series and it's hard to believe they decided to destroy the costumes instead of leaving them in some museum,So many years thinking that the costumes were kept by Sheryl Leach somewhere in her house or that they were stored in some cellar of the studios where they filmed the series Because making a suit is not cheap, I would like to know where you got the information about the suits being destroyed :(

    • @purity2706
      @purity2706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The reason so many costumes were destroyed was to protect copyright, Irene was obsessive about that and Barney was an easy live-sized puppet to create patterns from. I have the pattern from the Barney of the first three Backyard Gang videos, because I had my costumer make a paper pattern with muslin pinnings. I had learned the hard way from a previous children's puppet show, that unless you lock them up in closets, puppets are too often stolen, as was the case of a large dog puppet I made. In that case we stored the puppet in the studio and when we returned to video more installments, the puppet had disappeared. So I never made puppets again that I did not create a pattern for safety sake. My Barney pattern is in storage along with some other things I want to excavate!! 😂

      @@purity2706 I understand that it was to protect Barney but what I do not understand is because they did not sell the costumes to some museum of television programs to some country such as England since in that country there are museums with the costumes of very important shows like the teletubbies, Barney is a very important character in television and costumes, scenarios and the Scripts are important in his story, I don't 100% believe that the suits are destroyed Since Irene knows how important Barney is, not even Jim Henson's family has done things like that with big bird

    • @purity2706
      @purity2706 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Diamondroosee Irene sued a lot of people especially costume shops to prevent them from infringing upon her "property", which is totally understandable, as you said. But the problem was? She didn't actually design Barney, I did, and her niece, Suzanne Lockridge built him in Irene's shop. She turned the Barney costumes into a very lucrative business, selling the "franchise" of the costumes overseas for a lot of money. Since she really didn't design him, at least, not the first one (Backyard Gang) I can only surmise that she was trying to isolate the opportunity for costume shops and appearance venues to create their own costumes for commercial use. I actually don't believe Irene really cared about Barney as an icon, but he did afford her a very good business. Suzanne, on the other hand, was invested in Barney's character. Besides, if I had caught wind of what she was doing and how she was affecting other businesses, I had the materials and proof that could have been very undesirable for her reputation. But, as things turned out, I was essentially shut out by her very aggressive marketing. No one even knew I existed. It wasn't until PBS took on the project and she completely changed his look and color, that she could legitimately say she designed THAT Barney. And, in fact, after she built the new Barneys, she began to claim designer rights. Irene did not do that online or in publications until that happened. But someone made sure my name was never mentioned even during the videos after the first three. Besides she had a contract, I never did. When I designed Moonkin, I made sure to retain the rights to him. Because Irene sort of felt Barney was unimportant upon my conception of him (and her workshop was very small) there was no reason to keep the worn-out versions. And like I said before, foam-bodied life-sized puppets disintegrate pretty quickly.

    So crazy to think about how each costume was different. Even the actor inside the suit got the ultimate workout from it. The history of costumed characters have changed so much over the years. Those first 2 costumes I heard stories of how uncomfortable it was even with the kids hugging him. Crazy.
    The sweat..... that literally reminded me of what happened with Bert Lahr with his Cowardly Lion costume during the making of The Wizard of Oz. That costume was actually made from a real lion's body. It really hot and heavy. At the end of filming, the whole inside of the costume would feel like being inside a wet mattress. There were no double costumes. Bert Lahr would have to be inside that gross lion costume every day,
