3 Ways to UPDATE Your Character Designs!

- I have 3 characters you’ve seen in some capacity in the past that I’ve revisited the design of, and I want to show you how to go about updating older designs, especially as you improve as an artist. I’ll be highlighting specific practical methods as the video goes on.

I’ve actually been digging through some older drawings of my characters (15-16 years old to be exact) and realized that I actually really like some aspects of my style from those old days, that I kind of lost as I’ve worked towards pushing my art to become more realistic. So I think I’m going to try to work some of that old “cartoony” style back in while still maintaining everything that I’ve learned since.
Thats a very real pitfall, I think! That's why the sketch-overtop is helpful in both directions in that way

I've kinda just recently went through something like that but it's more I recently decided to give the charters in my drawings what ever you call the part of the eye that has the color and I just found some art from 2015/2016 (I think?) and the charaters in those drawings had the eye color thing.

Are time lapse videos really not that popular? I guess I can see that if it's one long piece. But something like this, that's a collection of smaller time lapsed characters, with a lesson behind them are pretty enjoyable.
Yep! A lot of times folks will... view... but skip to the end. Learned that the hard way with the first Super Nice Bros video... so instead, I try to point things out, and keep it instructional like this!
(Skipping to the end being detrimental to the TH-cam Algorithm, because the percentage of time watched being lower than 50% in that case)

Okay but real talk. This is so helpful. We all know the artist thing where you designed a character and then worked on their story for a year, adding more characters and improving, and then, OOPS you've improved too much and the background people look so slick and awesome and the main character looks like a trashbag. Now we know how to fix it!-

This was very helpful I have some characters who have gone through 5-7 redesigns in less than a year this could help me find what I like or dislike about each design

Thank you!!! As a learning exercise I'm doing some fan art for a show I loved as a kid. I'm redesigning the major characters, while still trying to keep them familiar to their original counter parts. It's been a lot of fun, but I've caught a few snags. This has really helpful advice. ❤

Ive got a robot i drew a few months ago that has lotus flowers in the design but not that happy with how that part came out but I finished it regardless and i want to have it give a better feel with how it was made to fit the kind friendly and cool appearance but not steer away from their assassin/hacker/athletic capabilities

I found some old art of some characters I forgot I had. I definitely need to update their designs. One is a ninja-fox thing (I'm going to change her colours a lot, and probably also her occupation), another is a dragon (I'm going to make him look a bit more dragon-like, and add colours) and the third is a monstrosity of a bird-lizard thing. That one needs a full re-design.

Hey, I have a question to ask.
I have a group of characters I’ve had for years, some longer then others, and I’m trying to redesign them as best as I can to put emphasis on their personalities, situations and backstories.
My question is; are there any good tips to redesigning characters you’ve already established in both personality and overall appearance? Or would they be no different then then tips shown in this video?

Wow, you've improved so much! Been subbed for a year or so, and while I always thought you had solid advice, your skill level seems to have drastically improved lately. Any tips for how you learn? Any resources we should be using?
I make it a point every week to share in these videos, means to improve your art, and the course I've been talking about that launches at the end of the month will be a comprehensive means of doing so as well.

How do you draw hands...
Drawing over an old design isn’t always a very good technique!! It can get you stuck using old wonky ways. It’s better to just start fresh and create a correct “scaffolding” to go off of instead of using a previous one that’s potentially flawed.
Never did I say to always draw over an old design.
