    I knew about the opposite colors complimenting each other-thing, but never considered adding changes in vibrance (So the colors aren't all screaming at you at once) and I'm so glad you pointed that out. I HAVE always known that using less "true color" shades can make your project look more realistic. But it can come in handy with cartoon work as well.

    While I'm not experienced in drawing n' stuff (I started months ago) the most annoying thing about colours that I found was that they always exist in conjunction with each other. I thought I could just find a perfect wood colour or perfect skin colour, because if something looks colorful or light or dark depends entirely on it's surroundings. :/

    • @CharacterDesignForge
      @CharacterDesignForge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      It's definitely all about context, although at times that makes the role of color selection easier. I think with anything, practice helps.

    • @VieneLea
      @VieneLea 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yeah, i general practise and study seem to be the things that improve my drawings the most. In general as someone who never drew before and just started I find the whole experience very similar to playing a MOBA or a fighting game: unless you didn't have some early experience it's extremely hard to start doing something even slightly competent, and you spend a lot of time reading stuff on how to do stuff online and watching others do it and practicing the most basic elements, and even then you'll never actually be as competently skillful as people who are succesful enough to use their skill to sustain themselves in life.

      For skin tones, especially for darker skinned characters, there are actually palettes that you can use to avoid it looking bad. In extreme cases, using the wrong color for skin can make it seem like blackface, which is something you definitely want to avoid.

    • @Soldiershak
      @Soldiershak 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. If you're doing it solely for the sake of sustainability there are better options than art. Everyone starts out not knowing how to do something, and even then success and failure in the traditional sense are not guaranteed to anyone no matter how skilled they are. Don't get too caught up in the "how-to" just do, make mistakes, get frustrated, get happy, get sad, all of those experiences are what make you great at anything you pursue and don't compare yourself to others because there are just too many factors as to why that person got there.

    Pretty sure no one cares, but I've been drawing here and there for a while, stumbling in the dark and telling myself that one day I'll look into colour theory - my reasoning being I'm not looking at an art career and I should probably learn to draw properly before I touch this. Having watched your video out of interest, I know I'm not a pro, or I probably shouldn't mask my bad drawing skills with colour, but in 10 minutes, I can see myself enjoying the process again, just by knowing the absolute basics and throwing down some values that work. You're an incredible teacher, literally the clearest explanation of anything art related I've ever heard, with the perfect presentation and no pretentiousness. One of the best art videos out there imo. Gonna go and dig through your channel. Keep it up man!

    I think I have a good grasp on like overall balance and what looks good with what but I struggle at like creating a multitude of characters and making them all distinct, it's like you run out of options at some point, only so many colors in the spectrum. I also generally run into patterns like "PRIMARY COLOR, then black and white", "PRIMARY COLOR, black and white" it can get kinda repetitive.

    I've only recently been figuring out what makes color schemes on characters tick. I'm the sort of person who instinctively seems to be aware of how color works. I don't usually think about it, I just make a design that looks good. It's interesting to watch this and see the mechanics behind what's already present in most of my character designs. I tend to go for spread and balance in color placement and put more striking colors in the place I want the viewer to be drawn to--- usually the eyes or something of significance to the character, and I often associate that color with the character, even if it isn't actually present in the design all that much.
    Of course now that I am aware of how it works I'm having fun figuring out how to place things just right.

    I have a question, how do you decide what colors to contrast or balance pure black or pure white? I have a character that is dressed like a french maid, so her outfit is black and white, and I'm not sure how to contrast it with her skin or hair color

    • @CharacterDesignForge
      @CharacterDesignForge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Thank you! So: Here's an idea for you. Instead of your lil lady being pure black and white, why not give the light and dark a slight tint? Excuse the quick sketch, here's two variations in color I just came up with: cl.ly/ncIs
      With the character Jacqueline, the sheep-star of our game Shackleton, instead of pure white wool, she has a slightly pink tint. This harmonizes well with the dark, saturated navy of her vest and gold key! Let me know if that helps, and may your maid rival Amelia Bedelia! 😛

    Anyone have any advice about creating a well contrasting cast of characters in a more realistic setting/style? I find it difficult to balance realism and exaggerated features. I've found many resources on cartoony and exaggerated character designs, but nothing about something in more realistic proportions, like what may be used in a comic or video game more towards an older audience, with more serious themes.

Such as for one of my characters, they have a white dress, light skin, light blue hair and red eyes. I just realized that most of my characters avert expectation from an external standpoint. How did I only just realize that? These videos really help me realize what I actually do when creating a character..

    Awesome video as usual bud.
    I've recently subscribed to your channel, and the quality of your content is fantastic.
    I'm currently working on a cgi animation series, occasionally referring to your videos. I'm not quite at your level, but knowing how patient you are and how terrible you used to be (that horrifyingly bad website design) gives me hope.
    Keep it up bud, somebody with your resolve is doomed to make it big on the Tubes.

      +KingPeuche Hehe I appreciate that 😂 persistence > natural talent, in my case. Hope the CG goes well! I need to make some more 3d videos, that’s my background as well.

      Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge Hell yeah! While I was watching this video, I legitimately thought some of the drawings were Blender models. I look forward to seeing your 3D works, sir. I can't speak for everybody, but you certainly have a few viewers who would really appreciate that kind of content from you.

    For anyone wondering, the background tune (at least in the beginning) is from Lakey inspired, can't remember the specific song name though

    Question, do you prefer the three color color wheel or a four color color wheel. Red/Violet/Blue/Green/Yellow/Orange or Red/Violet/Blue/Teal/Green/Lime/Yellow/Orange?

    I took a color theory class, somehow got an a, and still have no idea what I’m doing and struggle with making appealing palettes

    I'm remember when I chose bad colors for the characters. Sometimes is hard to chose what color will be dominate. I'm thought that character with yellow color (mostly clothes) doesn't look good. But I saw Fran Bow with yellow dress and I can't imagine her without it.

    I am so glad that all of this was surprisingly natural to me! Such as the analogous colors and varied hues. Which surprisingly, are the colors he made examples of, green and blue and slight red. UwU
