Brookes, your mentions of the ADHD struggle, omg. I have autism and I'm just discovering this since a few months ago. So much lines up. You're finding the neurodivergent formulas for work and it's so helpful to me. The real world often feels like I'm banging my head against a wall because while therapy and medication exist, the actual parts of life we have to face are still optimized for the neurotypical. It makes those things a big challenge sometimes. Sometimes a huge challenge. Others make it look so easy, and that's because it was kind of predisposed to them that way. My best friend's brother told me how the lows are lower but the highs are higher if we figure out how to work with our brains. Thank you for helping me figure it out. I'm so grateful I met you, it feels like we are walking a similar path but you have wisdom to give me along the way that you've found yourself as you continue to encounter roadblocks in your career.
Thanks for this video. As a self-employed artist trying to budget maintaining a steady content output, trying to learn game dev, and still managing to spend time with my family, this video echoed many of my own experiences with burnout and discovering the limits of my limitations. I’m still working on the whole “don’t grind yourself into dust” thing. I think my burger lacks buns.
This is crazy, it's like the chronological version of that trick where you break up a chocolate bar and rearrange the chunks to make a seemingly bigger bar (vsauce did a video about it I think?)
Me jumping between 34+ projects, I needed this video 😅 it’s hard to manage time, it can easily become unhealthy. It’s like shaking a soda before opening it, the pressure builds up which can be overwhelming and cause the soda to pop, that’s when you start playing Minecraft to chill but you feel guilty you get nothing done 😂 being creative is important but we don’t realize us artists have more time than it seems we do, we just need to manage it better in healthy ways. Great video! I’m glad this was the topic for today
as someone with adhd who's currently struggling to function at all, thank you so much for making this. i haven't seen a proper breakdown of a routine like this before, and im feeling optimistic about trying it
Omg you have no idea how much ive needed something like this and something that put words to how ive been feeling for a long time, the boat and paddle example SO REALL 😭 I know all of the things i want to do and get done but i feel like im running around in all places and i cant get what i want or need to do done in a consistent or structured way and the burnout and negative self talk is rough! Thank you for this video im going to try to implement something like this into my routine and just having someone else talk about something i havent been able to put into words is comforting ♡
This is great advice for managing my time in my non-creative projects too. Instead of fixating on the dozen things I'm not doing, I'm doing to emphasize the one thing I really need to do today. Thanks!
Currently feeling extremely called out after burning myself out for working on commissions non-stop for weeks lol Just need to make the time for a burger brainstorming session now! Thank you as always for making your invaluable advice so incredibly intuitive and pedagogical ❤️
This is the absolute last place I expected to see pro Smash show up lmao. Had to rewind just to make sure I didn't imagine seeing Sparg0 in a Brookes Eggleston vid lol. Great advice btw :)
Awesome video man, the description of your burnout sounds all too familiar. In my 40s and can tell you you're doing well to figure this out now. Keep up the great work!
I'm giggling at the idea of the "meat of the day" because I have the humor of a 12 year old boy and will henceforth be referring to the large chunks of my day as day meat 😂 Pushing my own ADHD aside to make a real point, I appreciate this so much. Task switching is especially bad for our kinda brains but it's also easy to get bored - switching up days rather than juggling various tasks within each day. PLUS is far beyond art specifically so this has major potential to help me in a lot of ways. Like I want to go back to school so I'm teaching myself math to minimize prerequisite classes. (Turns out I don't actually hate math when I'm not forced to learn it one way and under loads of pressure. Weird.) I'm sure a bit of daily practice will still be key but not trying to do 1-3 hours everyday will be a lot better for my brain! tldr; thank you💕
there could not have been a better timing for this video, I have been feeling so burned out after I tried to follow a schedule recently. I don't know but repeating the same schedule make me dread so much.
There's so much here that could REALLY help me! I'm gonna make a list of the things I'm writing and rate the severity and how hard it's gonna be from 1 to 10, and then maybe that'll help me complete something for once! :D
This video came at such a perfect and relatable time! I often find my tasks fill whatever space is available, whether I planned for that or not. And video work in particular can feel like a bottomless pit of potential time sink - like you can always make just one more improvement to editing/transitions/production quality/etc. I wasn't planning on saying this today, but ~ I'm excited to plan out my Meat Calendar! ~ Thanks for the tips and insight :D
This sounds amazing! I'm only able to do this a week at a time due to how my work schedule is released, but I'm going to try this out as well! I find I spend a lot of my time watching TH-cam or goofing off on games and staring at Discord. Basically doing anything to not work on what I really should. And it leads exactly to what was mentioned, I have so little time left for drawing at the end that I'm panicked and stressed on my art and don't have room for error to meet those deadlines. This happened to me earlier today, I barely skimmed the deadline by 2 minutes - not fun at all!!
Thank you so much for this video!!! #finishyourburger :) I think my buns might be inverted, like the morning and evening are the buns, and mid-day is more open - it wasn't bad!
This video came at the exact perfect time for me. The entire beginning of the video I kept nodding my head because I relate so hard, especially to the analysis paralysis. This past month I've been pressuring myself a TON to get things done and only making myself more stressed instead of more efficient. This video was EXTREMELY encouraging to me and I'm 100% going to try this burger method; thanks so much for this video! I feel very validated and seen 😂
Very valuable advice in a neatly edited video, thank you so much! Like many, I am also a freelancer prone to burnout, trying to juggle different kinds of tasks as mentioned. One thing I found to be very important is also "listening to your own body". If you're busy doing (especially) drawing and painting, it can get very taxing on your shoulders, back and last-not-least brain. Stopping altogether at the end of the day, as well as taking short breaks to rest has proven very helpful to me, along with figuring out the most comfortable way of doing the thing.
The way i manage my time is 2 days a week editing, 3 days on main project, and weekends I work on preproduction on the next project. I don't move up my weekend project till the week day project is done.
I stumbled upon a similar system to make my adhd work for me! (Though prepping for tabling has absorbed my brain lol) it's cool to see what things work for other folks too
Good to see ya back. I would honestly like to try this so I can start doing something, though I don't know if I could make/follow the schedule to begin with and it annoys me.
Burnout is a struggle for me, too. I worked 12 hour days for about a year and a half, and I got a lot of shit done, but then I had to take a several month break before coming back. I take more breaks now, loosely doing the 25 5 rule (more like 20 10 for me).
Yeah thats something I struggle with as an artist and an inspiring comic creator. I want to make comics at like the speeds of webtoon artists but I also know I dont have it in me. And grinding doesnt work because I get burnt out so quick so its like these goals that I want to complete seem impossible.
How dare u be so correct and tell me to do what I've been meaning to do-- Great vid Brookes!! It helps a lot to hear this and I especially relate to the task switching struggle particularly being AuDHD.
In March, I did a daily art and worldbuilding challenge to ritualize working on daily tasks. And I did it. 31 finished species profiles, one finished shortstory which even made some redditors tear up. I'm quite proud of Bosun's Journal. But it didn't work. At the start of April, procrastinating old ADD me was back and my passion project webcomic is still as stuck as it was before. Seems like I need to start making some burgers.
I had the clever idea to be in grad school and gor the summer semester I'm taking 2 full length classes instead of 2 half-semester classes. My ipad is gathering dust while i panic read 3 different books at a time
I think my burger meat right now is just going to my full time job. I want to add my artistic and musical goals to it soon though. I'm gonna use some sort of physical planner for this. Might draw it on my whiteboard.
Yooo, did you say you're keeping your schedule until the end of July? Well, how did you do?? I was hoping you could give some insight as a start the same challage.
Hi, youve commented this on every video for months. More power to you, but i dont know what self-promotion in my comments will accomplish. All the best to you!
My day be like: *googles "heart attack burger"* In any case!! Thank you a lot, Brookes! 💜🖤🤍 You are an awesome art coach, you've helped me a lot ^^ I hope, one day, I'll return the favour or something hhhhhhh

That's great, work with your body!
Came back to this video, im baffled how well edited this is with little views. Top tier advice being slept on. Your channel is a hidden gem.

Thank you! My sis has two kids and is writing a book. She might benefit from this video.
"I made burgers" 100% best life advice 😂

One of the most useful videos I've watched
Glad you think so!

Great video! Thanks for the advice, I like these types of videos that work for all artists, or even other fields that aren't art

Will likely make a video talking about my findings- but we’ve still got some July left ;)
I didn’t think I was burnt out. And then Zelda TOTK came out. And I got stuck 😂
Also I love the SpongeBob references :)
I was literally just wondering about this… STOP SPYING ON ME!! But also, thank you.
me explaining something to an american "so think of a burger"
great video btw
