Hey guys, how's it going? Chris Connor here and welcome to another episode of filmmaker reacts for my channel. Seat back, relax and lets study the filmmaking techniques as well as talk about what visual effects can be pulled of within after effects! This week we are reacting and taking a look at two OVERWATCH INFILTRATION short film cinematic!

The new Character is Named Sombra, She "Works" for Talon she's a Master hacker., Alongside Widowmaker and Reaper, and Some other people, [If you watch the orgin stories you'll know.] And, That Was an assassination mission of Katya Voskya, A Famous Russian woman. In the end there, She did not let this threat from Sombra slide. She assigned Zarya[The character who replied, "I believe I do." To Katya], To attempt to kill Sombra.[Theres a Comic from Overwatch that covers this.] Katya was supposed to be killed, but Sombra went traitor to force Katya into something else, [so we don't know what side Sombra is really on.] That's all I have for an Explanation.

The opening "screen" perspective was a lot more impactful when the trailer was first revealed at Blizzcon because it was cut together withe another video. The intent was that Sombra hacked into Blizzcon and interrupted their presentation. It was an awesome moment.

also because sombra was a character that had been hyped up since the game's release and this cinematic was the first time anyone saw her. which is why it was especially cool that it opened straight with her

Spicy detail that someone noticed when it came out: watch the desk's pictures closely at 7:40 of your vid. Katya Volskaya does the same 'boop' to her daughter. Sombra is implying with that gesture (after she already grabbed and showed the portrait of the girl) that if Volskaya changes her mind about their 'friendship', her daughter will be the price she pays (and that Sombra's been monitoring Volskaya so closely that she saw Volskaya and her daughter multiple times, maybe even up close). Suddenly that boop isn't that adorable anymore, but a cold-blooded threat.

The pink haired woman, who only shows up at the end, is called Zarya. She's one of the strongest women in the world and has competed in tournaments for bodybuilding and weightlifting. She gave up that career in order to fight the omnics attacking Russia.
In the game she uses a weapon not unlike the one the mech suit used to slice the bridge into pieces, and it is so heavy that she is one of few people actually able to carry and use it effectively

Spoegefugl correct. The particle cannon is meant to be mounted on vehicles or mechs in its standard configuration. Zarya is just that strong. :)

The "boop" Sombra does is a bit more intimidating than most people realize.
If you look at the second picture in 7:40 or 26:49 (4 minutes 22 in Infiltration) , you can see Voskaya (the CEO lady) doing the same gesture to her daughter.
Thank you for pointing it out! I heard this a while ago and this just makes Sombra as a character just that much more terrifying.

@@vkdeen7570 The reason she did that is probably to let Katya Volskaya know that she has been watching her for quite some time and knows all about her and her daughter - even these kind of little gestures of affection. It's a direct threat against her daughter.
This is Sombra, a gifted hacker from mexico. She is "allied" with Talon - a powerful organisation lead by Doomfist and contains some of the most powerful character and some of them were ex-overwatch like Gabriel Reyes aka Reaper and Moira.
Sombra has her own agenda as shown in the short movie and does not like to be bound.
Her abilities are cloacking, hacking players and objects (disabling their abilities) and placing a relocation beacon 06:16 and teleporting back to it.
In this short, Talon are targetting Katja Volskaya, a russian entrepreneur, owner of Volskaya Industries and known for her company's military and defense mechs.
The last character shown was Zarya, a russian athlete who was hired by Volsakaya to track down Sombra.
I’ve always been wondering, is the girl from Soldier 76’s short, Sombra? I mean it made sense to me but i could never find anywhere that said so.
zarya isn't just an athlete and was part of a special force in the russian defense forces

You can find the conclusion of this cinematic in an online comic on playoverwatch com.
Sombra is her code name, means shadow in Spanish, her real name is Olivia Colamar. Widowmaker is the code name for Amalie Lacroix because she killed her husband. And Reaper is codename for Gabriel Reyes because Gabriel is a drama queen.
I have never known of sombras realname? Is that confirmed?

hulm hochberg it was revealed in the comic “searching” I read it a long time ago and missed it. It takes place after this trailer zarya is searching for sombra and called her by name which is Olivia
This cinematic just shows off one of Talon's missions. (Talon being the terrorist organization of the Overwatch world.) They were trying to assassinate Katya Volskaya, the leader of one of the most powerful nations on the planet. (Russia.) Obviously Sombra has other plans.
There's not much to unpack here. Katya isn't a playable character, and her Daughter isn't anyone we know.
Sombra was a kid that grew up in Mexico, and learned very quickly that she has to do some dirty work to survive. She learned how to be a hacker, and got REALLY good at it, and worked with the local gangs. Eventually Reaper picked her up, and she joined Talon.
The chick that comes in at the end is "Zarya". She was once a world champion body builder who gave up her life's passion when the Omnic's (Robots) attacked Russia. She decided to become a soldier in the Russian army, and rose up the ranks and became Russia's number 1 hero.
That bit at the end is just an Easter Egg for the fans who play the game. There's a comic book that they put out that shows Zarya tracking and finding Sombra.
What if that picture is zarya when she was young??😳 nahh just kidding unlesss...😳😳

@@papillon2066 The point is that it's horrible, and hilarious when you think about just walking around in public and you're watching someone like Fitzy streaming and someone hear's "Kill baby dva" or "Ball's hacked." That's just terribly awkward and hilarious.
The thing Sombra throws isn't a respawn point but instead a return point for Sombra.
The device isn't the same as Sombra uses, but Tracer made use of the explosiveness of it.
IIRC Sombra's translocator is based on the chronal accelerator Tracer wears not her bombs

@Stan110 possible though it's pure speculation, also there's the matter that Tracer seemed to have her pulse bombs when she was on her missions for Overwatch before it fell so it seems to predate the "recall" cinematic that happens after the fall of Overwatch.
New character: Sombra, real name: Olivia Colomar. An orphaned girl in Mexico from the Omnic War, Sombra is a very talented hacker who uses information as power to survive the streets of Mexico when she was young. First she was a part of Los Muertos and then managed to join Talon, aka the bad organization/guys of Overwatch, which Widowmaker and Reaper are a part of as well.
Edit: Oh and the “respawn” is just a teleportation device to let her get out of sticky situations.
Now that you got the goofy acting for the sponsor segments down too, it feels like you perfectly qualify to join Corridor Digital. :D

Agreed. I would like to see his take on the "We are Overwatch" promo trailer too. There's not much to it, but has some great imagery and music. Perhaps he can combine all three in one episode.

Yess finally another one, i love these ❤️ oh yeah, and the fake bomb thing was a translocator, sombra uses this to teleport back to it whenever shes in trouble. AAND in the end the character is zarya, she is a tank in the real game.

the thing that sombra throws is a modified version of the thing on tracer's chest . .sombra stole it from winston because he is the one that made tracer's chest thing

Also I think that watching whole intro gameplay can be pretty good as Destiny as a whole have really nice sound placement and lore, also character lores are pretty... attractive.
I would like to see you not to play to say but to just try out the carachters and see the abilities in game.

They want him to go in game just to see what abilities the characters have. Not necessarily go into actual games. Basically just so he gets a good idea of what they do and why they do what they do in the animations

I like how Nathan Connor looks like Hackerman, really fitting the theme of the cinematic
Yeah those mechs are supposed to be really strong and deal an incredible amount of damage with its particle cannon as you see in this cinematic. But, Reaper just easily took them all out at the end so yeah reaper is badass.
Lol they are tank and reaper is tank killer.

Sombra in the game can turn invisible (Stealth) as well as teleport. She can place her little teleport pads, and can teleport back to it from anywhere on the map.
A good strategy for playing Sombra, is to set up a teleport pad on top of a health pack, go invisible and get behind the enemies back line. At that point you kill the healer, or top damage dealer, and then teleport out before you're spotted/killed. When you teleport back to your pad, you're on top of a health pack so you heal up while you're in a safe spot.
Edit: No, it's not Winston's shield generator.

Sam Jackson asked for a purple lightsaber so he could stand out. The writers then wrote a backstory for it saying that he's a Jedi who practices the Dark Side, and comes so close to pushing over the edge, that he could almost be considered a "Grey Jedi", (Both light and dark.) but he always comes back to the light.
In the canon of Star Wars, Darth Revan; who is also a grey Jedi; has a red and purple lightsaber. He was the first Jedi to ever see value in the Dark Side, and work on mastering both light and dark. Good and Evil.

After watching this cinematic MANY times, I just now realized Sombra's transition to the drone is her hacking into the drone for sight and it's showing what she sees when hacking it...
She zooms in on the location of Reaper and Widowmaker, which it does another transition to actually showing them. That is such a cool detail I never noticed.
Loved watching this breakdown as an aspiring actor. :)
I just love how Widowmaker said "What" in French. The fact she's so taken by surprise that she reverts to her native tongue is all the more entertaining

Yes, she's called "Sombra" and she has this ability called "translocator" where she could set up a teleport point she could teleport at any time. Usually used as an escape option or to set up plays or to go to a high ground.
Hero is the cinematic I want to see next but all of them are going to be good so looking forward to the next one

I think this is one of my favourite Overwatch shorts.
Another fun watch and breakdown. (Always look forward to these game breakdowns) So for characters, the main girl is Sombra and the woman at the end is Zarya. (Zarya doesn't have a cinematic yet. Ex weight-lifting champ turned solider).
Also you broke down the proper film way of doing the picture frame reflection but couldn't it also be composited by filming the actor on a black background and compositing with a gradient fade over the picture frame. (since the shot if pretty still with little motion tracking.)
Love this and looking forward to more. (even through you are running out of Blizz videos.)
I don't know if anyone else mentioned but the build-up intro they used was designed that way because this is Sombra's reveal video, and they used it as part of a transition to make it look like she was hacking the video feed of a panel discussion at BlizzCon. They tried to do an AR type of game leading up to her reveal but it got a little convoluted and messy. The reveal itself was pretty neat though.
I usually skip sponsorships but I honestly loved that and watched the whole thing. Keep up the good work! :)

FYI- Her little gadget at 22:50 is a teleporter. She can throw it, teleport herself to it at will then throw it again.
23:25 yes, it is a Sombra's mobile respawn point. In the game it is called "translocator". Winston was making another thing - a spherical shield generator.
Not only the teleporter is in the game. All the moves that the characters do is from the game. It is something that I find being incredible in those cinematics.

Star Wars nerd here: Lightsaber colors do have meaning. Green sabers represent the path of the Jedi Consular, a Jedi that focused on the inner mysteries of the force and used the force primarily for self-improvement and things like looking into the future (Yoda). Blue sabers are the Jedi Guardians, whose focus was on the physical aspects of the force. They tended to be the badass duelists and fling things around with the force and stuff like that. Red sabers are, of course, indicative of the corruption of the force by the Dark Side, and blue/green sabers would become red when their wielders turned to darkness. Yellow sabers were the mark of the Jedi Sentinels. They represented balance in the force and only a handful ever existed, primarily owned by Jedi Temple Guardians. Since light sabers crystals remain the color attunement of the Jedi who crafted and/or corrupted them, very few Yellow sabers exist, and that's why the yellow saber Rey had at the end of the new trilogy was relevant. Then there are the exceptions, Windu's purple saber, which of course was a request by the actor, has no distinct canon reason for existing, but my favorite theory is that Windu turned partly to the Dark Side at some point, but stopped and so did not fully corrupt his blue saber. Then there is the Dark Saber that is seen at the end of the Manadlorian, which really sort of gets it's own essay, but it's really old and super cool. There, now you know all about lightsabers. =D

the thing that blocked reaper’s shot was a barrier. they’re not called shields. it’s made of “hard light.” the concept of hard light is when they get the photons and make it hard and use it as protection or barriers. it can also be used as a weapon, as there is a character named symmetra who works for a company based on hard light. the ripples in the barrier were the photons breaking apart and coming back together i believe.
Plot - Sombra's "boop" is taken from polish dubbing (¡Apagando las luces! -> Boop! I po światłach) and was added as simply voice line

To understand why the cinematic starts with the screen that we are looking from, you need to know some Overwatch history. So basicly Sombra is a hacking character, and there was months of hype and teasing about her. Fun bit of trivia, the voice actress for Sombra; Carolina Ravassa; makes TH-cam videos going around and finding the other Overwatch voice actors and interviewing them. They swap character lines, and have a good chat. It's really cool. And she's taken to Sombra's "Boop" as well, and boops people, and the camera. It's too cute.
Dont forget Shooting Star, Rise and Shine, Hero, AND the Museum one (it's just called Overwatch cinematic trailer) before Zero Hour.
22:55, kind of, it's a translocator, it allows Sombra (main purple hacker girl) to teleport back to where ever she left her translocator if she wants to get away from a certain place fast
The Overwatch cinematic shorts are actually some of the best pieces of film/entertainment ever
I gotta say... I love the commercials here. Instead of having the boring, incredibly annoying youtube ads... We get a proper ad by the maker of the video, who actually makes it sound interesting! I wish more youtubes could/would do this. Makes it much, much more pleasant to actually watch said ad.
Also, the character is called Sombra, or Olivia Colomar. A spanish Hacker working under Talon.
Something that I liked from the original reveal that it isn't shown in the YT video, is that Blizzard made it as if all the monitors in the Blizzcon stage started to glitch out more and more, until Sombra's logo appeared, and this cinematic started.
I’m so glad I found this channel
Sombra's release was one of the best out there, it started with a massive clue hunt hidden in pictures, codes, websites where the fans took part.
This lasted for 4 months, one small clue at a time.
And at Blizzcon they made it look like she Hacked the event, intrerupting the current video and playing this one instead (this is the first time the fans saw her design).
And a few days later she was released in game as a playable character.
P.S. For while she even hacked the official Overwatch Wiki. There you can see info about every character including their real name, and in Sombra's case it spelled giberish instead.
The respawn device as you call it, is technology Sombra stole from Tracer, it is based on the thing Tracer wears to go back to a previous state of herself. Sombra uses it as a teleport anchor, once activated it will teleport the linked person to this place.
In game this is basically a way for Sombra to either get to places most champions can't, or to have a spot to quickly go back too in case she gets in a dangerous situation. This allows for, placing an anchor, go invisible, head behind enemy lines, try to take out someone fast and before they realize there's a sombra behind em, teleport away.
Aside from the picture relating to Sombra saying boop in the trailer. Sombra saying boop while invisible in game is just as terrifying.
At 6:45 you can see a slight distortion on the right soldier's gun. That is showing sombra is already there
Widowmaker sniper rifle's lens is the blak widow torso mark, and haver the spider tattoed in the back, all a remainder of the alive cinematic.
I'm one of the many who wants to see the zero hour reaction, but I'm glad he is watching the others first. It will make sense more powerful the more he learns about the characters and develops an attachment.
Are we taking bets on if he tears up watching zero hour?

By the way, it is revealed later that Reaper was aware of Sombra intentionally failing the mission to blackmail our Russian friend. He basically states how he allows Sombra to believe he got tricked and doesn't mind his team following their own ambitions as long as those ambitions don't directly counter Talon. And while the mission was to kill, blackmail also has great potential use to Talon at some point.
yeah, reyes is actually much smarter than the cinematics let on, most of the times. and since hes pretty much immortal (remember, he survived being fully burned to ash by winston, he just reformed into black smoke), hes probably still the most dangerous being in overwatchs lore so far.
22:42 Sombra has an ability known as "Translocator." She can throw that thing seen in the cinematic, and can teleport to it with the push of a button. It can be used to get to otherwise inaccessible places, by throwing the translocator upward or across a gap and immediately teleporting to it, or it can be dropped somewhere, usually next to a health pack, as Sombra enters combat, and if she's in danger, she simply teleports back to it.
This is not what Winston was creating in Recall. He was creating a spherical shield, the working version of which is one of his abilities in game.
Her name is Sombra. She can hack, go invisible and set up her translocator to later teleport to it. The translocator was made from tech stolen from Winston's lab, which is why it kinda looks like Winston's barrier generator and Tracer's chrono stabilizer. There are character interactions that mention this. In the game, sometimes when Sombra teleports to the translocator she alludes to this by saying "cheers love" and snickering, referencing Tracer's catchphrase, because her translocator is usually used in a way similar to Tracer's recall ability, to get back to safety.
The respawn point is used as a 1 use teleport location that, once used, must be put down again. If Sombra is killed the teleport point is also destroyed although it’s on a rather short cool down
I'll never forget. This animations are what got me into gaming itself! Because of this, I bough a PS4 so I could play the game and i wouldn't have it any other way 😆
