To clarify some lore stuff: - In the first video, the lich king is Arthas Menthil, a human paladin that "turned to the dark side" and became the lich king, ruler of the undead wielding a extremely overpowered sword called frostmoure. Frostmourne has the ability to emprison the spirit of the fallen and turn these fallen into minions of the lich king. Sylvanas Windrunner was killed by Arthas and raised as banshee into his service before breaking free. Arthas was defeated and frostmourne was shattered, but without their master the undead would run amok and kill anything and everything, so a new guy wore the helm of dominion and is now the new lich king (The fiery former paladin Bolvar Fordragon). Bolvar was a human paladin that was almost killed during the first encounter with Arthas but then was burned by dragon fire to be purified hence his affinity to fire. - In the last video, Sylvanas is fighting Bolvar, the new lich king, which pales in comparison to the power of the former amazingly powerful Arthas Menethil. In the final scene, where the sky just shattered, Sylvanas shattered the veil between life and death and opened the way to the realm of death aka the shadowlands.
@Dean Robin It's not that "there's no implications", it's that it's 100% confirmed that Arthas was way stronger than Bolvar. Arthas was a stronger paladin and a way stronger death knigh, but most importantly, Arthas had Frostmourne.
@Dean Robin Not an Arthas fan, but Bolvar as LK was no action, frozen on the throne his whole term, no frostmourne, no being powered and mentored by Ner'zhul + absorbing him. Bolvar didn't destroy his own humanity... didn't have any Northrend help from guys like Anub'arak, Kel'thuzad. Bolvar became Lich King with no preparation or anything. All the power-ups or knowledge Arthas gained will always give him an edge over Bolvar (plus the fact he could solo us all and kill us, had it not been for the light interfering). Bolvar was no pussy and Arthas's fanboys are jerking him just as much as Sylvanas's jerk her. But to say there is no implication of difference in raw power between the two is just wrong.
@@abdulsadek8911 oof ig you are not remembering the old Naxxramas from classic back in 2006 if I'm not mistaken, fun fact my guild never managed to beat it ;d
@@nashbutler it was revealed in shadowlands that bolvar was at his wit's end when he fought sylvanas . He was fighting with the jailer in his head the entire time
Sylvanas was empowered by the jailer of the most evil souls ever to exist in the entire universe (who is also on the same level as or stronger than a titan). Bolvar was not Arthas. He never embraced the power his crown gave him. He saw it as a burden. He spent his entire life serving the light and then was tasked with holding shadow at bay. IMO Sylvanas told him he was unfit to wear the crown because he did not want to use its power. So to me, it made sense.
More like almost 12 years ago :P Wotlk was Released in November 2008, so the cinematic had to be released atleast early 2008... thats insane to think about!
still my favorite expansion, when classic came out i got back into the lore and read some of the books as well as watching some videos about Arthas, they are truly some great storytellers and writers at blizzard
i got my invincible mount 2 years ago so her and I are good friends now, i apologized, we had some tea (she provided the ice) and talked about why i killed her 180 times, she understood
YESS YES all the time...for example 8:48 I know you???...No you dont...He dont even know the vendeta betwin Silvana and the Lich King... 14:24 WTF we have snow again???this guy dont have a clu who is what and where...
What’s crazy is that on its own, it is incredible. But if you know the backstory of Arthas, it somehow even goes to another level, as the narration is absolutely perfect.
yea... they dont need you to be dead to make you one of them too :P Plague is real yea you can have easier time at killing them... ut they can make anything from bones of living beings means they can kind of reproduce easier too I think plague is way too dangerius than "oh no you died at north now you are undead" plague on the other hand... its literal pandemic, it doesnt truly kill you too you are still moving and everything and makes you want to spread it too... making it greatly dangerious.
The GoT white walkers inspired the Scourge. Blizzard was reading those books before it was cool. They even lampshaded it by giving the title "Kingslayer" to players who killed The Lich King. There's GoT references ALL over Northrend. Ironically, most people didn't get them at the time because very few people had heard of Game of Thrones back in 2007.
Chris: Why did he go from fire to ice? Me, a Death Knight player: He switched specs from Blood to Frost...unfortunately he forgot to switch his weapon from a two-handed melee weapon to two one-handed melee weapons and that's why he got his ass kicked
I remember the early days of the DK. I played an unholy. Ran across a raid geared group of the opposite faction. I fucked them up solo. Anti magic shield, grasp, took out the healer first, then the lock who happened to blow a SS. Then took out the melee with army of dead... Then I camped them. OP indeed. Then DKs were nerfed.
@@sagrikabali3193 They mean aesthetically. Though in truth, WotLK would have been inspired by Lord of the Rings and in turn, inspired more than a few aesthetics in Game of Thrones.
One thing to clearify for you is that in the first cinematic you watched with the dragon, that guy is NOT the same one you watched fighting elf chick (Sylvanas). The first guy was killed and the red flaming guy took the crown. I highly suggest you to watch the "Fall of the Litch King Ending Remastered" it will give you a little bit more context on what happened. Warcraft universe is huge and there is A LOT to cover to fully understand what is going on in those cinematics. Great video though, love the insights of the scenes you give!
exacly this On one hand this trailer is amazing (scenes, animations etc), on the other hand lorewise this is second worst cinematic, only BfA final cinematic is worse for me at least
Bolvar is the fucking man though. The Wrathgate is one of my favourite cinematic of all time if they redid it with today's technology I'd probably have a fit!
@@greigcockburn5760 i think someome did do a redo of the wrathgate at some point. It might be a bit older now but it has been done (as a fan trailer so not one officially done by blizzard obviously)
i love how interconnected the cinematics you chose this time. the guy in 1st cinematic killed the son of the guy in 2nd cinematic and killed your favorite undead elf chick. the undead elf chick, killed the guy in the 2nd cinematic. the guy in 3rd cinematic, which replaced the guy in the 1st cinematic, beaten by the chick that was killed by guy in the 1st cinematic
Imma try to keep it simple : The one from the Lich King trailer and Shadowlands one aren't the same guy. The first got corrupted by the Sword he uses (and that's also why we get close-ups on the sword, cus it's REALLY important in the story) and he killed Sylvanas, then raised her back as an undead Banshee. The guy from the Shadowlands trailer got burned by some dragon's breathe and got captured by the Lich King (so the one in the first trailer you watched), that's why he's on fire. At the end, players killed the Lich King, but the fire guy puts on the crown, because there NEED to be a Lich King to "manage" all of the undeads armies, or they will just unleash everywhere and destroy the world. So he's like the good guy taking the bad guy place toi makes things a bit better you know. But the thing is, all of the Lich King powers come from the Crown itself. And this guy is litteraly the king of de deads. So that's why when she breaks the crown apart, the frontier between life and death breaks apart too. The "upside down" that we can see is the realm were dead people goes, and now that the king of deads no longer exists, he can't manage to keep the two worlds separated so they just open up.
extra enigmo there's a bit to go into but as basic as I can put it, because of lore stuff souls are not being distributed around the Shadowlands like they should and instead are all being funneled to The Maw (hell basically)
Literly all of lich kings power vomes from crown?srsly?who thought you lore? Nerzhul's power comes from a complete armor set crafted to cature his soul the blacksmith of this armor set was kiljaiden(in warcraft 3 the armor is clear in cutsences but un wow they decided to lay a hand on things) beside of the armor set there was also a blade called frostmourne this blade was made by dreadlords for the champion of the lich king and it isnt really connected to nerzhul by any means The blacksmith of the sword is unnoun but it is sayd that dreadlords ORDERED it to be crafted they didnt craft it themselves And according to stuff we found in shadowlands we can almost certainly say the blacksmith is the jailor of damned but then again(almost certain ALMOST)
@@alikamali4174 Dude you're just splitting hairs. You said it yourself, there WAS a sword named Frostmourne. Frostmourne got broken, and it didn't crack the sky to the Shadowlands as far as i know. When Arthas got to the Frozen Throne at the end of War 3 FT, he transforms when he puts the helmet on. When we defeated the Lich King at ICC, Bolvar transforms when he puts the helmet on. When Sylvanas defeats Bolvar, he comes back to himself when she take off the helmet from him.
I think the sword Manipulate the user but the crown take over the user so the thing about Arthas is he had both of them together that’s why he had that much power, so it’s like the lich king (Arthas) was so strong cuz he had 2 artifacts that kinda meant to be together. But after all the lich king character himself was coming from the crown not the sword
So....in the "Old Soldier". Dranosh, sons of Varok Saurfang, got killed by Lich King (the first one from Wrath of the Lich King). But the worst part about fighting the Lich King is that....your dead allies will become your enemy. That's what happen to Dranosh, in which he became the Lich King's strongest Death Knight. On the battle at Icecrown (end of WotLK), Varok lead The Horde warrior to battle...only to have his own sons block his way. After the battle, he carry his son's body back to his homeland to burried him with his wife.
That's one thing I'll always wonder what's going on at blizz lol to lore Alliance beat the horde in the Gunship battle but DBS fights cannon lore is Horde lol
There are two alternate versions of who faces Saurfang at the end. If the alliance wins Saurfang faces the alliance to claim his sons body, but the king ordered his men to stand down and allow him to greeve for his sons loss.
Also, to put the war into context. Sylvanas burned the Great Tree of Teldrassil, where Night Elves (Alliance) live, killing thousands, for yet mysterious reasons. That reignited the war between the Alliance and the Horde. At the same time, there is conflict inside the Horde as well. Sylvanas, the Warchief of the Horde, was chosen by the former Warchief, who was told by the spirits that Sylvanas had to lead the Horde. But Sylvanas was ruthless, soulless and practical, she did not care about earthly conflicts, she understood very well the threats we were going to face in the future against The Void, an entity in the universe that corrupts planets. Her objective is still not very clear, but we can understand that she wants to control the power of the dead. But that objective conflicts with the old thoughts of the Horde, honor and pride, and fight in combat. That's why Varok says "There is no honor in this, no glory." In the end they fight Sylvanas, with the help of The Alliance. Now in Shadowlands, we will understand the true motives of Sylvanas, and why she has destroyed the veil that separates the living from the dead.
@@unholyxeras8182 my money would still be on Arthas simply because of Frostmourn. Not only was the sword OP itself but Arthas himself was extremely skilled in swordsmanship and he said the sword was so light it was almost as if it wielded itself.
Yeah, just make a video watching everything in chronological order, you'll learn the lore and WILL enjoy it😁 Many fans are gonna love that too and watch the video, so ... You get the idea
i'd even say, watch some of the even earlier warcraft movies. for 20-30 year old cinematics, they are still really good. the cinematic, where Arthas comes back home from Northrend is 20 years old, but still better than what most game studios are capable of today. (Arthas' betryal) and the Warcraft 2 cinematics look outdated today, but when u remember they are like 25+ years old...
Do you all forget about the end of the war over mount Hyjal? Or Illidans intro with the skull of Gul'dan? (which, btw would be a good starting point if he ever was to watch both the BC and the WoD trailers) if you start looking them, you gotta go down the entire rabbit hole XD
So the voiceover in the lich king trailer is his father talking. Lich King was Arthas before, son to a king of a human kingdom. Arthas got consumed by revenge and he started going for forbidden powers just to fight his enemies. That helmet and sword was the forbidden power, he thought he can control it but he couldnt. He slowly started to change for the worse, he could change the dead into undead with this power. He went to his kingdom and the happy father welcomed him just to be killed by his son Arthas, who was turning into the Lich King. Then he changed all his kingdom into the kingdom of undead. He was a righteous person however his greed and want for revenge made him make horrible mistakes and reach for powers that made him the Lich King. The Lich King is also the one who changed Sylvanas, the elf into the Banshee Queen - the undeady elf with red eyes. She always wanted revenge on him for it. The Lich King you see in Shadolands trailer is not the same person - it is not Arthas. Bolwar took the helmet on him after we killed Arthas in the game because "there must always be a lich king" to control the undead or they go rampage and apparently, what we didn't know, the destruction of the helmet opens a portal to the shadowlands - the realm of the dead too (the helmet was created there). That is what Sylvanas did by destroying it. All thought she would put it on at first. Bolwar took it upon him after killing arthas because he was burned in the fight and thought its the last act for good he can make and there was no sign of him until now so he did good at controlling that power but from the interactions with him in the game it did change him in some ways already - he became more cold. Sylvanas shouldnt be able to kill the old or new Lich King on her own but she made a deal with somebody from the realm of the dead and she got some insane powers from there that is why it's so easy for her in the Shadowlands trailer to defeat the new Lich King (Bolwar). We killed the old Lich King (Arthas) as a whole army of the Alliance and Horde so the Lich King is really powerful. And no, we didn't kick her ass in the game yet she opens that portal and in the next expansion we go there, she is there with the "being" she made the deal with (jailor). We don't know what will go down, we know she was making war everywhere around her to kill as many as possible so the jailor gets more souls and gets more powerful (and so she gets more powerful), so she stopped carying for the horde, for the world, all she cared about is killing as many as possible. We do not know what will go down in shadowlands, if we kill her or what happens yet. The expansion is not even out yet. We are still in The Battle for Azeroth expansion. In old soldier cinematic you see Saurfang (the orc) standing over his sons body with the necklace of the horde. The son died fighting the old Lich King (Arthas) and was raised as a knight for Lich King (Death Knight) and then killed by us because he was no longer himself, he was controlled by The Lich King. The Helmet was first destroyed now by Sylvanas but the sword that was also a huge source of power for the Lich King (Arthas) was destroyed by us when we killed the old Lich King. It had the ability to trap souls, we freed all the souls when destroying the sword. That is why Bolwar has a mace not a sword but the Helmet is what controlled the undead. Bolwar has the burned and fire appearence because he was burned in the fight with the old Lich King (I don't want to get into details how because it's another huge text haha) however the power of the helmet/Lich King makes him able to change his colors to blue. Arthas was only blue because underneath he was still himself just a little more pale, grey haired and undeady looking but he never actually died he was just changed by the helmet and sword. I wish you could make reactions to all world of warcraft trailers - classic wow, the burning crusade, cataclysm, pandaria, warlords of draenor, legion are left. There are also some in game cinematics as for example when we kill arthas and bolwar takes the helmet, but these are lower filmmaking quality of course, it's just me fangirling over the lore of the game :D but the trailers are all wonderful. Other than world of warcraft some league of legends cinematics are epic too. You can also watch The warbringers series especially the episode with Sylvanas - it shows her origin that I mentioned here. The style of these is different than those cinematics but very cool. Im sorry if its all a bit chaotic I have edited this a milion times as I watched the video and you had more questions. I hope its still understandable. Thanks for reading and have a great day! Congratulations on 100k :)

The Lich King has a long story and is more of a "vessel" of immense power. The Lich King was created by Kil'jaeden. Kil'jaeden was previously acting leader of the Burning Legion, an intergalactic army of demons seeking to destroy all planets with a Titan essence. The creator and actual leader of the Burning Legion is the Titan Sargeras. An awakened Titan is a colossal, planetary sized being with insane power. Sargeras being the most powerful became corrupt after once having sought to protect sleeping Titans. Instead of protecting the sleeping Titans from the Void, he decided to instead destroy sleeping Titans to prevent the Void from corrupting these Titans, which would be even more powerful than regular Titans. Sargeras therefore created the Burning Legion, an army of demons to invade and occupy sleeping Titans (once again, sleeping Titans being planets) and to proceed by destroying the planet. Of course, Sargeras has been successful every single time, until he came across Azeroth. The champions of Azeroth (the players) fought and defeated invasions after invasions of the Burning Legion with unwavering courage and will. We defeated Sargeras two generals, Archimonde the Defiler and Kil'jaeden the Deceiver and ultimately recently, with the help of other Titans, managed to imprison Sargeras himself after Sargeras having pierced Azeroth with his colossal sword which almost destroyed the planet completely. Azeroth, the planet wow takes place in, is in fact a sleeping Titan, but not like any other. It is the most powerful sleeping Titan to ever exist. If the Void corrupts Azeroth, nothing will be able to stop her. What we're trying to do as champions (the players) is to protect Azeroth and heal her to our best ability. Anyhow, that is some backstory. The Lich King was created by Kil'jaeden from an orc soul called Ner'zhul, a very powerful orc that was punished after having betrayed Kil'jaeden. The orcs came from Draenor, another planet which got invaded by the Burning Legion and was pretty much destroyed. The orcs then fled (more complex than just fled however) to Azeroth to settle in a new home. The Lich King was created to prepare for the invasion of the Burning Legion. Essentially the goal was to weaken Azeroths defenders before unleashing the Legion itself upon Azeroth. Arthas Menethil, a young and proud human Paladin of Lordaeron picked up the sword Frostmourne to fight against the undead that the Lich King created. However, Frostmourne belonged to the Lich King himself and ultimately corrupted Arthas to instead turn against humanity and all that is living and side with the undead. He went on a quest to find the Helm of Damnation, the helm which Sylvanas just tore apart. He did so and found the helm atop icecrown and once he put on the helm of damnation, he finally merged with the soul of Ner'zhul and became the Lich King. This version of the Lich King is the most powerful of the two (Arthas and Bolvar). Arthas Lich King planned to betray the Burning Legion and fight them, because he learned that he was just being used as a pawn for the Burning Legion. To fight the Legion, he wanted the most powerful army and the most powerful individuals to raise as undead to fight for him. He was much, much stronger than the combined forces of the champions of Azeroth and actually killed us when we fought him. He was just about to resurrect us as one of his greatest undead champions, but we were ultimately saved by the Light and by Tirion Fordring who literally broke Frostmourne to pieces with his legendary sword, Ashbringer. Highlord Bolvar took the burden of the helm of damnation and became the new Lich King in order to control the scourge and prevent it from potentially destroy all of the living. For there must always be a Lich King... until now. The reason why this new version of the Lich King was much weaker is due to the fact that Frostmourne was destroyed and Arthas was a much more powerful being itself. If it were Arthas against Sylvanas, it wouldn't be nearly as easy, however Sylvanas of course has become incredibly powerful over the years.
Well yes and no, Arthas Gordon menethil wears the crown of the lich king, forged in the fires of narnia with much more power due to his cooking skills and experience from the hell kitchen tv shows, however it is true that kil jaeden has a hand in making the lich king, in the expansion barbies wrath of the bitch king it is as stated '' Kil Jaeden or Jeaden smith as he is called in the one punch man lore, created the crown of the lich king with the HELP of Ryhorn who used his horn to make the holes for the eyes in the helmet, it may not be that important to the story but nevertheless, to expand on the making of the sword Frostmourne, it actually has it roots in the ground, so to say, it is the original sword in the stone, or sword of the bone as it is called in world of whorecraft, the xxx parody, it's counterpart being the titswinger, but enough of that! yes the sword has the power to raise the dead, but not any corpse, since it was not able to ressurect the likes of pedo bear, harambe or anyother out dated meme, i hope this is a help to anyone looking to found out more about hello kitty lore! may the horse be with you

To answer your question at 47:22 of "what is he by the way?" You'll need a bit of context from the actual game, As many other people have stated the man in the shadowlands trailer isn't the same person as the one in the wrath of the lich king trailer. The man in the Shadowlands trailer is Bolvar Foredragon, A human paladin who was almost killed at the Wrathgate; A battle where the Horde and the Alliance joined forces to try and defeat the lich king, but were betrayed from within leaving most of both Horde and Alliance armies dead. After the battle the area was cleansed by a red dragon called Alextraza the lifebinder. Unkown to everyone, this saved Bolvar's life, but his body was charred black as we see it here. Bolvar was later taken from the battlefield by the lich king to be corrupted and made to serve him, but the Alliance and Horde were able to storm Icecrown citadel (The tower shown in the shadowlands trailer) and defeat the lich king before he was able to corrupt Bolvar. Shortly after the death of the lich king, Bolvar asked that he take the lich kings place; As if there is no lich king the mindless undead would run rampant throughout the world. So the lich king's helmet, the crown of domination was placed upon his head giving him the power to control the undead. The red we see in his eyes and chest in the shadowlands trailer is the remnants of the dragon's fire that saved Bolvar's life, whereas the blue that overtakes it when the battle starts is the power of the crown, which gives him command of the undead.

Just because i also love the first cinematic to do with the Lich King, the translation from the vocals of the cinematic King..... Long live the king, May he reign...forever. May his strength fail him never. First in battle last in retreat. Even in death... Ha! Ma! Da! Ma! Raise this dragon now! May his strength fail him never May his reign last forever King.... May his strength fail him never See his power... Darken the sky... May his reign last forever Long live the king... Long live the king!
About the Fire/Ice King's change: The King from the first cinematic isn't the same from the last, the first one was Arthas and he was killed after raising an army of undead against the world, but without a king that army would go around the world without control, so someone would need to make the sacrifice and step up to the throne to keep the undead under control, the second one is Bolvar, he choose to be the new Lich King and control the army of the undead to save the world, his fire inner and burn skin was an effect of being killed by the fire breath of the Queen of the Life, she's a dragon, so he was some kind of unique undead created by the fire of life, after using the crown he became this kind of undead of fire and ice. About the sky breaking apart: That crown is known as the Helm of Domination, it's an artifact created on the Realm of the Dead know as Shadowlands, it gives to the owner the power control the undead, so it's kind like a focused bridge between the Realm of the Living and the Realm of the Dead, the moment she broke the crown she abruptly forced a connection between the two realms, that physical abrupt bridge is represented by sky breaking apart. About here power increasing: There isn't a single entity working as a God of the Realm of the Dead, but they don't work together, so she made a bargain with one of them and started that whole war on Battle for Azeroth to be able to fastly harvest more souls to him in exchange for power. Although she's undead, she's still mortal, but her soul is not going to Shadowlands as any other soul would, her soul is going to some endless void afterlife and she's so afraid of it that she's trying to win against the circle of life and death to escape this fate.
Bolvar is not undead, he was brought back from brink of death. Altho as per his words "dragon's flame sealed my fate" - he wasn't neither mortal, nor undead, something in between because of life giving powers of red dragons.
Dude, it physically hurts me seeing you watching and trying to breakdown these trailers nearly without context and only basic storyline. Makes me feel desperately to sit down and update you on that, and by the comments and reactions I guess I'm not the only one lol . If you dedicate some time to get the story, I guarantee you'll enjoy these cinematics 100 times more. Because isn't only the quality of the takes and render that leaves us in awe, they make an extra effort to mach the storyline and the universe. What you are watching here is the climax they have been building up in the game story, and sometimes they simply hit bullseye. . I just found your channel, by the time I'm making this comment, I didn't even hit the subscribe button yet. I loved your work! Congrats!
The problem lies within everyone swarming reaction channels saying 'omg react to World of Warcraft Cinematics!'... While they are beautiful feats of skill, art, and dedication... Most people aren't going to know whats going on. And can't even blame them for not diving into the lore first. They probably assumed they didn't need to, which is fair. Most games have 1 or 2 cinematics at most as far as the average person is aware. Like, people could react to a cinematic for Cyberpunk 2077 or something, and be fine. It's designed to give you introduction context as it's almost a standalone product (yeah there is a great history to Cyberpunk and all that, but the game itself will definitely be newbie friendly and inviting), whereas with WoW you have countless cinematics spanning countless expansions/patches and, even more broadly, the rest of the Warcraft franchise going back through the books, RTS games, etc.
Dude, looking st it from a film makers POV you don't need to know all the back story. They are epic regardless of whether you know the back story. He's talking about technical stuff, not just "boohoo sylvanas isn't just a sexy elf, she's a psycho"
To answer your question at 47:22 "What is he by the way": He was the Leader of the Alliance until the mid of the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion (You watched the Trailer earlier). He was killed by a Gas bombardement but the Dragonfire of the Dragonqueen Alexstraza "the Lifegiver" kept him alive (The red fire in him) after she cleansed the place of the battle with it. He was captured and tortured by the Lich king until his Fall. Afterwards took up the Crown of the Lich King (the source of the blue fire) to keep the Undead in control.
Bolvar was never the Leader of the Alliance. he was one of the generals serving under Varian Wrynn, who was king of Stormwind and leader of The Alliance.
@@demetrifrost2546 During Vanilla/Classic Varian was missing so Anduin was the de facto King. However, being a child Bolvar and Onyxia mentored and advised and raised Anduin until Varian returned.
So, Wrath of the Lich King was a 2008 Expansion. The Lich King you saw there was from a fallen Paladin, and heir to Lorederan, Arthas Menethil. His story alone is lengthy and explained in Warcraft III more. After the Wrath Expansion, we killed Arthas and replaced him with another to control the Undead Scourge, Highlord Bolvar. You see him in Shadowlands Cinematic. Bolvar's story can be told throughout the World of Warcraft game itself. I recommend you watch the other ones as well. You can see the evolution of the cinematics.
19:33 By breaking the Helm of Domination, she literally shattered the barrier between the world of the living and the dead - the Shadowlands. That first "king" isn't the same one as in the Shadowlands cinematic. The "new" one basically got saved from a poison cloud by red dragons through them burning it. And as they stand for life, he looks like that now.
This is actually a really cool series, the reactions are nice but the breakdown of the filmmaking techniques and effects really make it different. Keep it up man.
From a storytelling perspective one of the things I really love about the Lich King cinematic is how it uses contrasting characterization to really paint the picture of how wrong things have gone with this character. Everything you hear about the character from the voice of his father is talking about how he was raised in reverence, endowed with power that he was meant to wield wisely and use with restraint, and how he was going to stir the hearts of his people to lead them well. At the same time, everything you SEE of the character is this sleeping rage about an inheritance denied, power that's being unleashed without restraint, dangerous things being unearthed, and an army of heartless mockeries he's about to lead into conquest. Two people watching this trailer, one blindfolded, the other with earplugs, will get exactly opposite messages about who this character IS, and the brilliant thing is that they're both right, because this is the story of a character who fell from grace and into darkness. The heart of the character's history is told through that contrast. You don't need the backstory, you don't need the details; the seed of what you really need to know is planted in your imagination to grow without a loredump.
Your explanation is 10000% on point. The Wrath of the Lich King cinematic is such a masterpiece. I just wish they made a trilogy about this story instead of the Warcraft movie they released, I'm sure the entire world would've loved it. Now because the Warcraft movie flopped I believe we will never witness such greatness and it's making me so sad.
Before he watches Warbringers Sylvanas he should watch the reforged Warcraft 3 Culling campaign trailer if he want to fill his lore knowledge. Not that it is worthy of his time to analyzing it for an video.
@@alucard8433 Yes, i actually think they will try to explain that what she did was for the greater good, sort of like she infiltrated the shadowlands and the maw to discover what/who the jailor is and what is his plan so she should stop it.
@@apsodyeu3694 By killing so many? They are going to have to do some amazing storytelling to convince the Alliance and a good portion of the Horde that everything she did was for 'The Greater Good'. Mind you, I still think she's badass as hell, regardless of what they do with her.
"How is she so powerful?" She made a deal with a guy that's storing the souls of everyone that died recently (how recently we still don't know) and he's giving her power proportionally to how many deaths she causes. She then starts the bloodiest war in recent history so this gives her a massive power-up.
this is the cleanest, simplest, purest, and therefore best explanation of Sylvanas' "power-spike" and motivations in BFA I've come across. Really hit the nail on the head there, well done!
@@emilklingberg1623 Probably because of a lack of buildup. I believe 8.3.5 would serve as a prelude to this cinematic, so this fight would be much more impactful. Still, we had a hint of this in 8.2.5.
The narration of the first one is King Terenas Menethil, who is Arthas' Father. He was one of the first souls claimed by Arthas when he went evil. The narration and conversation he's having is a parody of the cinematic and what his son has become. Before becoming the Lich King Arthas was a Paladin of the Light. He was a good guy, and a very honorable, virtuous person. He became corrupted and turned into a Death Knight. So this cinematic's narration could have been a speech that the King gave to his son before leaving on his last mission. Telling him that he's strong, and he knows that he'll use his power wisely, and rule justly with wisdom and strength. It's a parody because of what he's turned into, which is kind of the opposite, but also kind of the same. He has strength, and is incredibly wise. He's the most powerful and feared King. The cool thing about the first cinematic is that you can actually go to that exact location in the game.
49:33 She has this deal with "The Jailor" where, every soul* she feeds to him, the more power he gives to her. And with Sylvanas burning the Elf tree (among countless other souls*) she got incredibly powerfull.
Saurfang is such a tragic character. Been through countless wars, never seems to be able to be felled in combat, but sees all those around him die. He was going to go out alone to fight the Alliance as a suicide, to earn his ''warriors death'' (which is why he exclaims he is going to claim what it is). He's been through a lot, being told he has given up is pretty accurate, he's done with everything. Sad that he's dead now, he's been part of Warcraft since the beginning.
He was depressed, suicide is not a warrior's death. But even suicide was better option at that time in his eyes than the dishonor that Sylvanas brought upon the horde he believed in. The Horde that his son died for.
@@puliverius It's not a warrior's death, but it's exactly what he was going to go through with. There is no other reason he would have gone to the front lines on his own. He was walking out there to die.
I get excited for people who have never seen these cinematics and appreciate the work that goes into them. Personally I think they should just use this animation and make full on episodes or even the next Warcraft movie. They are always sooooo good.
Arthas' cinematic has a much MUCH bigger impact when you have played through Warcraft 3 and know his backstory already. Hearing his father speaking to him with pride, the parallel between his lines and the scenes in the video, the ominous promise of domination since Warcraft finally coming to fruition, all captured beautifully. Still my favorite cinematic even tho it's the one that lacks any form of action in all the trailers.
In the Wrath of the Lich King, you were on a right track. The one scene from Game of thrones S7 is inspired exactly by this trailer! If you compare the Night Kings dragon flying over the undead army and this, they're the same.
"HOW IS SHE SO POWERFUL?!!" .. Great question... Apparently she's been making dirty deals with the new Shadowlands baddie who is super powerful, but I don't think very many people were too happy with her power spike.
Sylvanas is wielding the power of The Jailer, basically the ruler of the lowest depth of hell. The Battle for Azeroth was basically her killing as many people as possible so that The Jailer would grow more powerful from their souls. Something broke in the afterlife and now all souls that die go to his realm. In game, however, they only hinted at her new power in Reckoning when she killed Saurfang, and by the wisps of black smoke around her, which is a new thing for her. This cinematic is the reveal of her full power, and "How is she THAT powerful!?" is the intended reaction. They're going to retroactively explain it in the Shadowlands expansion. Many WoW fans are not that patient, however, and Blizzard has bungled some storylines in recent years and eroded player trust, so a lot of people are really salty that she could defeat the Lich King. Even though it's a less powerful Lich King without his greatest weapon- the blade Frostmourne.
@Ace Arch and the one behind the power of sylvanas is someone that (likely at least) has a lot more power then ner'zhul or the lich king could ever have.
I gives me so much pleasure to see someone who's not a WoW-player enjoy these cinematics, and then explaining the technique used so eloquently. So enjoyable!
I like to think that he changed his mindset about what dying with honor means. From just dying in honorable combat to dying fighting so that the people he is protecting wont have to.
@@alainbcdefghijk Yeah, thus his last words in that other cinematic about "breaking the cycle". You can also draw conclusions from other games within that line, such as "the definition of insanity". The cycle of hatred, which is the faction war is the insanity part and Saurfang is Jason. xD
Hey Chris! This was my first video I watched of yours, love your work! Just wanted to clarify the change from the Lich King going from Blue ice to Reddish/Orangish fire. They are 2 different Lich Kings, we killed the Blue Frost one in the game during that expansion. The one at the start of the Shadowlands trailer is his replacement that took over after that expansion. Keep up the great work!! Best, Ryan.
First movie explanation: There was once a promising young prince in Lordaeron, named Arthas. Great warrior and eventually follow the path and became a paladin. In his childhood he lost an horse due to his youth imbecility and made a promise to never accept injustice. As a paladin, he came to cross the Undead Scourge that was turning he people into undead. He chase the responsible for vengeance and sacrifice a lot of people for it. He got cursed by the sword Frostmourne (the one he hold in the movie), when he picked up to accomplish his vengeance, abandoning the light and becoming a death knight. He then return home to kill his father ( the voice that narrate), destroy his home kingdom, killing his mentor as a paladin, burning the high elven kingdom to raise a necromancer into a lich. After a time and fighting many he had piss off, he went to the Frozen Throne(that his where he was seated) to free the Helmet of Domination to complete the set and become the Lich King. In the movie, he awaken because he is now the one in control and nothing good remain within. Thus he went to rise that fallen dragon and spread his control over his undead army to the invade Azeroth and slay all the living. In the second movie, the guy made many massacre in his younger years under influence of daemon blood. He don’t eat pig because their cry remind him of the Draenei children he slaughter. So he got a lot of ptsd and he got nobody left as his son got killed, raised by the Lich King, kill again and thus Saufang had to bury it with his mother. So now he serve that undead chick, Sylvannas that does war crimes and he don’t want to do dishonourable thing anymore. Burning the Great Capital City Tree of Teldrassil and all those innocents weight on him. That his why during the movie at the castle battle he surrendered and you find him later in jail. The last one follow Sylvannas after she fled and she fight Bolvar, a paladin trap between life and death after contracting the undead plague and being burned by the purifying lifegiving breath of the red dragon queen, Alekstraza the Lifebinder. Later, after we defeat the original Lich King, the prince Arthas from the first video, Bolvar makes the ultimate sacrifice and wear the crown to be the jailer of the undead army so that they don’t swarm the living. For what we know now is that the Shadowy figure behind her his some sort of patron. That he offers her something and it is why she reap the veil between the world of the living and were the soul of the dead goes.
Thank you to those who liked my post. I love to share what I like and the lore of Warcraft is so vaste. That is why just watching these videos you can be in awe, but question yourself what is actually going on. Little note, the Lich King was a BBNE (big boss end expansion), someone with a huge amount of power. Someone that needed many heroes and a champion of the light to defeat. It is something. Even if he don’t have Frostmourne anymore, you don’t go solo Bolvar. Yet even surround by a little army, she subdue him and destroy an object of great power. Who ever back her up gave the Banshee Queen quite the boost.
@@ChrisConnorFilms by the way watch "Fall of the Lich King", please. There is where Arthas, that icy dude, dies and it's an amazing cinematic. It also explains why the second dude is fiery. A link to help you find it: th-cam.com/video/qAIrj_Vqdfc/w-d-xo.html
This is so refreshing! To see someone outside the sphere of the game watch the lore, and incredible art that goes in to this game. I bet hundreds of people have already recommended the Overwatch cinematics, but you ought to watch them as well if you like Blizzards animation/storytelling.
Maaaaaan. The story of Arthas is such a deep drama. These words of his father, king Therenas, sounds so intense in the context of this trailer... I remember how I react that days, when I watch this trailer the first time. This is EPIC
Aww mate. Watching someone so enthusiastic about storytelling watching cinematics from a game I have played and loved for almost two decades for the first time... This was so cool, thanks!
I really like your analyzing the movie parts :) the one thing I value also a big deal in such a trailer is the whole dialogue or narrative plot embracing the visual effects. I think especially in the first trailer they did an amazing fusion of what the narrator says and what the picture shows eg. "you grew into a weapon" - arthas draws the sword "stir the hearts of your people" - undead show their glow (which could mean they have no heart) "you shall be king" - we see arthas from underneath (like we kneel before a king) i find such details very important and very cool to observe :) great job keep it up
If i might be suggestive... you should react to all the Blizzard Cinematics. From all their Games. Overwatch and Warcraft in Particular! You'll be amazed! And people love reactions to the Blizzard Cinematics!
Also: *Diablo 3 cinematics.* Say of the game what you want (i myself like it) but the cinematic cutscenes are just the usual Blizzard standard... meaning they are absolutely awesome, badass and of incredible quality in general!
The Flash back scene in "Old Soldier" was actually a flash back times two. The Old Soldier (Saurfang) and young-dead one (Dranosh) while in the snow, is a father and son. The son (Dranosh) was killed by The Lich King (Arthas, the guy that raised the dragon) several [in game] years ago. And Saurfang was having *that* flash back whilst on the wall and flashing back to just a few weeks earlier when Sylvanas had murdered the Elves and Humans who resided in that big tree (Teldrassil) she burned. (Think of Teldrassil as if it were a city of thousands). I have to point out that Orcs in Warcraft (WoW) do not remove their armor before battle usually. However, at this point in his mind set, Saurfang believed that *this* fight was Honor-less. So to go find honor in battle, he was going to go face the might of the Alliance alone and without his armor. Zekan (the Troll that follows him [AKA: Zappi-boy]) wasn't about to leave him though. Zekan sees/saw Saurfang as the embodiment of Honor in the Horde. Zekan then follows Saurfang towards the Alliance war front, and Zekan's desire to cling to the Old Horde reminds Saurfang that there are those within the Horde who are worth fighting for, worth being the bastion-of-honor to. This then gives us a touch of humor at the end of the cinematic when Saurfang chides Zappi-boy about fighting without armor. If you know this, when you pay attention to the "Battle for Azeroth" cinematic, where Saurfang is on the ground fighting and Sylvanas is darting down the siege tower, his armor is only partly on. He never fully gets it all on. ----- The Shadowlands Cinematic is showing us how powerful Sylvanas has become, and how changed the new Lich king is (Bolvar Foredragon). Long story short: Bolvar should be dead totally. However, the toxin of a plague Sylvanas' man (Putruss) created, and the fires of a Dragon (Alexstrasza the Life Binder) fused into him caused him to not die. Then Arthas, the first Lich King, found him and tortured him whilst Bolvar hug in chains above the Frozen Throne (The chair/throne you talked about and that Arthas is seated in, in "The Lich King" cinematic, and later and Bolvar is seated in in the Shadowlands cinematic). All these tortures combined still did not make Bolvar loose his faith in "The Light". Besides, someone was needed to hold the Undead at bay; "There must always be a Lich King". Bolvar as the Lich King is not as powerful as Arthas was as the Lich King. Also, take note, Arthas as the Lich KIng has a Sword, Frostmourne. Bolvar the Lich King, never will. The sword was broken when Arthus was killed (by we the players -yay-). Also, so you know, the man narrating in "The Lich King" cinematic is actually Arthas' father; King Terenas Menethil of Lordaeron. Another long story short: Arthas, after getting hold of Frostmourne, returned to his father and commit patricide. Arthas then return back to Ice Crown Citadel, put on the Helm of Domination, the Plate of the Damned and sat in the Frozen Throne. ------ There is a connection between Arthas and Sylvanas. And another between Sylvanas and Lodaeron. (LOL!) wowwiki.fandom.com/wiki/Helm_of_Domination_(Lich_King)
Add me to the pile of comments trying to add lore and context to these cinematics. As many have already pointed out, the Lich King in the first cinematic you watched used to be a human prince called Arthas Menethil. He is one of the best (and most loved) characters in Warcraft lore because of how tragic and nuanced his story is. One of the best parts of that cinematic is the dialogue. The "narrator" is his father, King Terenas (who Arthas himself killed); so you can see a father's wish for his son to be a powerful king becoming reality in the most distorted of ways. Arthas is also the one that turned Sylvanas into an undead and pretty much into the evil character she is today. She used to be a brilliant general for the High Elven city of Silvermoon. The only one that could keep Arthas and the undead scourge in check, in fact, at least until she was betrayed by another elf. Arthas tortured her, turned her into a banshee and enslaved her will. She eventually broke free and founded a city for "good" undead. Arthas is ALSO responsible for Saurfang's son's death. Eventually Arthas was defeated and Highlord Bolvar Fordragon took his place to keep the undead scourge under control and prevent more deaths. When Sylvanas says he is unworthy of that crown, she is comparing him with Arthas, saying he is not as good (which is true, Arthas was way more powerful, thanks in no small part to his magic sword, Frostmourne). The Warcraft universe is filled with awesome stories and characters. There are many more cinematics in different styles and each and every one of them is awesome. And congratz for the 1K subscribers! Count me in as one of the newer ones lol
Actuall the death of Saurfang's death is a lot more nuanced than it being Artha's fault. Saurfang's son joined Bolvar at the Wrathgate to try and commit a head on assault against Arthas, as the assault was failing High Apothecary Putress showed up and nuked the area with Blight. The Blight was strong enough to cause Arthas to have to retreat, but also killed the entire army gathered there, both Horde and Alliance, killing Dranosh, and nearly killing Bolvar before Alexstraza and The Red Dragonflight appear and burn away the Blight. Since the Red Dragonflight is the Lifebinder flight, the fire did not kill Bolvar, but turned him into what you saw on the throne in the Shadowlands trailer. But no one knew he was alive, and Arthas's undead minions brought both Dranosh's dead body and Bolvars still living ones to Icecrown Citadel. Within Icecrown Citadel Saurfang is reanimated as a Death Knight, and sent to kill his own father as the Horde forces make their assault on Icecrown Citadel during the ICC Raid. Saurfang along with the players are forced to kill the reanimated version of his own son, and takes the body to be buried afterwards. The flashbacks to the fire is Flashbacks to the Warbringer animation where Sylvanas burnt the shit out of Teldrassil the World Tree, and the flashback in the snow is to the moments following Dranosh Saurfangs second death. Only hours later Tirion Fordring shatters Frostmourne, kills Arthas, and gives Bolvar the crown. If we had managed to not kill Dranosh Saurfang until this moment, Bolvar could have freed him. He would have been undead, but still "Alive" as far as the Horde is concerned. Where it gets EVEN MORE Nuanced is that when Putress nuked the Wrathgate, killing hundreds of his own allies including Dranosh, the blame is laid at his feet, saying he's a rebel, a traitor, and did it as part of a ploy to take over Undercity. (the city Sylvanas, Elf Chick, rules over.) but it is later revealed that Sylvanas was in on the plot. She was willing to sacrifice those hundreds of troops if it meant killing Arthas, giving her revenge for him turning her into a Banshee all those years ago, but when she failed she set up Putress as a scapegoat. Saurfang is the High Overlord to the Warchief Sylvanas. who murdered his son, whose quest for vengeance brought him to the point where he had to "Rekill" his own son, tied him to her path with bounds of "Honor" and then took a steaming shit on the entire concept of Honor killing thousands of civilians when she burned Teldrassil. The burning of Teldrassil was the last straw, he was going to leave, go join the Alliance to fight against Sylvanas when the Troll inadvertently makes him stay by invoking the memory of his lost son. There is so so so much Nuance and history behind Saurfang's bath you could write books about his story
@@richardommundsen2417 Dranosh was actually killed by Arthas himself at The Wrathgate before Putress' attack. You can even see how Frostmourne absorbs his soul or something in the cinematic. I just said Arthas was responsible because of the whole reanimating and getting killed again. Agreed with everything else tho. I love how nuanced Warcraft stories are and that you can see where they are coming from, no matter how evil they may seem. Only Sylvanas I think has gone a bit too far recently, and even then its debatable for everything she had to endure as well.
I don't think she's comparing Bolvar to Arthas. I think she's comparing the Lich King itself to a power that actually controls the dead, like those that exist in the Shadowlands. Of course, the upcoming lore reveals of the expansion might change that.
@@RockyTorres43 I think the most interesting part about Sylvanas is that, since she has mostly thorough knowledge about the afterlife, mortal lives become insignificant in comparison, so there's no reason for her to uphold any kind of morality regarding what happens in our dimension.
In the "Old Soldier" cinematic, Lord Saurfang's son, Dranosh, was killed by the lich king (Arthas) in the battle of the wrathgate and then later raised by the lich king to serve him in undeath. In the game, the players invade Ice Crown Citadel (the lich king's fortress) and kill the undead Dranosh (he is one of the bosses that players have to defeat). Lord Saurfang is then able to retrieve his son's body and give him a proper burial which is what we are seeing in Saurfang's "flashback" in "Old Soldier"
Chris, the Lich King with a sword was already dead in the Shadowlands Cinematic. The Fiery Lich King is not the same one as the Lich who raised the Dragon. Try watching The Fall of the Lich King next. It's not exactly cinematic, but a cutscene from the game.
20:39 king Terenas Menethil II is actually talking to his son before he becomes the "Lich King" reminding him of his duty as the heir to the throne of Lordaeron and after each line Arthas does the opposite or disobeys his father's words. "My son, the day you were born, the very forests of Lordaeron whispered the name Arthas. My child, I watched with pride as you grew into a weapon of righteousness. Remember, our line has always ruled with wisdom and strength. And I know you will show restraint when exercising your great power. But the truest victory, my son, is stirring the hearts of your people. I tell you this, for when my days have come to an end, you shall be King. " Another great Cinematic you can watch for context comes from Warcraft III called Human Ending Cinematic, in which Arthas The Lich King interacts with his father.
"How is she so powerful" tldr: She made a secret deal with a kind of death god and every person who has died for the last few years has had their soul turned into fuel that gives her power. So right now she is probably the most powerful being on the planet.
@@NonsensicalSpudz You say that, but they always leave so much room to fill in the stories nowadays so as not to have to retcon stuff constantly like they used to. Honestly, I can see many possibilities of how it happened, and I understand why we wouldn't know about it either. Sylvanas has always been shady and mysterious. I like this new lore.
"Someone please explain this to me, I don't get it" The short version is that she cut a deal with a figure from the afterlife called the Jailer of the Damned, lord of The Maw. Basically the setting's version of Hell. When she ripped apart the Helm of Domination it ripped open a literal passage between the living world and the Maw, leading into the rest of the afterlife. That upside-down tower? That's Torghast, the Jailer's citadel.
All of this holds so much weight to us WoW fans knowing all the story behind it. Like knowing the 2 Lich Kings you saw were different people and why each became it. And the Saurfang seen, knowing how his son died, I almost cried in this one.

49:30 How is she so powerfull: Sylvanas made a deal with an big evil dude, the "Jailer". Sylvanas was killed multiple times already in the story and was in Hell. She knows if she dies again she and the other undead will all go to hell and wants a solution for this problem. The helm (of domination) she destroyed is like a seal for the afterlife world. That's why you can control the undead by wearing it. By destroying the helm she opened a crossing to this world, where the Jailer lifes.
Which honestly seems really strange given that the helm was an artificial creation by demons and is no more than fifty years old. Why would such a recent and fragile thing have any kind of connection to what you'd think would be permanent infrastructure of the entire planet if not universe.
@M. Woller I'm aware, I've seen the bellular video fam and it doesn't stop me from thinking it's stupid that the helm of domination breaking would some how shatter the barrier between Azeroth and the Shadowlands. Like Hust91, why does such a recently created thing like the Helm of Domination shatter the metaphysical barrier that separates the shadowlands and Azeroth? The helm wasn't made on Azeroth, it has no connection to Azeroth other than existing on Azeroth so why would it do that? It's just nonsense. Unless you want to come out with "WeLl ThE dReAdLoRdS bUiLt tHe HeLm Of DoMiNaTiOn To Be ThE KeY tO tHe PoRtAl" Then i'm going to ask why the fuck i should even care about the lore? If the dreadlords are sitting here playing 5d Multidimensional time traveling chess like some plane shifting Illuminati why should i care? What is authentic at that point? What lore can i actually trust as being lore? Now i have to look at the entire lore through the lens of "Well, that could of been the dreadlords that caused that." I can't trust character moments any more because at any point in the future it could be retconned that "actually that was the dreadlords manipulating things, khadgar only went to draenor because he's a dreadlord and it was lulz. Garrosh was actually a dreadlord lol, he killed Caine for the megabants and manipulated magatha grimtotem in to poisoning his weapon, l0l" Fuck it, at this point i wouldn't be surprised if blizzard came out and said "You were a dreadlord all a long lol" and renamed the game Dreadlord of Dreadcraft. Just because Blizzard can and are retconning and changing a fucktonne of lore just to mash this story together until it fits does not make it a good story.
@M. Woller Do you understand the concept of visual story telling? The helm broke and it shattered the sky to create the portal. This is what Blizzard have told me through the events of the cinematic. And that's where it stops for me. Like i've said, you can use the dreadlords built it to be a portal key, or helped open the portal or whatever but i'm unwilling to engage in this 5D multidimensional time travel chess because then it reaches the point where i no longer take what blizzard is showing me at face value. It becomes this exhausting endevour in trying to cobble together pieces of old lore and guessing what's going to be changed or retconned next to understand what is even happening.
@M. Woller That's not what i've said, and if that's what you are getting from that then how the fuck am i the simple person? I've said i'm unwilling to engage in the 5dMDTT Chess that blizzard is trying to pull with the lore. I'm saying that there are things that you should be able to take at face value because if you can't take anything at face value how are you supposed to trust that any of it is real? That any of it really exists? How do i know that any of the previous lore is actually real and not just the dreadlords making it all up as we go? What if blizzard are the dreadlords and they are actually creating a simulation where they make a really good story in and we all play fictional characters but they run out of idea on what to do so they start changing everything to be really fucking stupid I'm being increadibly facetious but my point is that if blizzard are just going to start playing fast and loose with the lore then what's the point of it existing, what's the point in me investing in it when they clearly have no fucking clue what to do and come up with dog shit ideas that compremise the integrity of every single piece of world building that has come till this point. I am now at a point where i can not take previous events as facts because of a) and actual Lore reason which suggests that a shadow illuminati could be pulling the strings behind everything or b) because blizzard do not care about the previous lore Also bro, i've dropped you paragraphs of my opinions on this and you've maybe took into account a couple of lines and called me simple, saying it's pointless to talk to me when you've barely engaged in a discussion at all? That's really fucking funny dude. You clearly don't want to engage in a discussion, you want to be right. So go ahead and fell as correct as you want my guy, what ever helps you sleep at night.
Just realised when Sylvanas breaks the Helm, you see the souls escape, and does it look like some of them run along the cracks of the sky breaking or maybe just breaking effects are same colour? Also try watching The Warbringers animated shorts. There are 3 in total. One is about the Elf chick (Syvlanas).
It's an interesting observation. I guess Sylvannas' goal here was to let all the souls contained in the Helm of Domination go to the Shadowlands where they should rightfully be, but then why would someone in the Shadowlands have made the helm in the first place? Since it was stolen, my current guess is that it was made with the intent for the jailer or the arbiter to wear it to make controlling everyone in the Shadowlands easier. I doubt it was ever supposed to find its way to Azeroth. But still, it's interesting to wonder where the other souls went that didn't go straight towards the Shadowlands.

To clarify some lore stuff:
- In the first video, the lich king is Arthas Menthil, a human paladin that "turned to the dark side" and became the lich king, ruler of the undead wielding a extremely overpowered sword called frostmoure.
Or more commonly referred to as Alpha Arthas and Beta Bolvar
Sorry for nitpicking because you are mostly correct... it's the Helm of Domination.
@Dean Robin It's not that "there's no implications", it's that it's 100% confirmed that Arthas was way stronger than Bolvar. Arthas was a stronger paladin and a way stronger death knigh, but most importantly, Arthas had Frostmourne.
@Dean Robin no frostmourne no party

@@nashbutler it was revealed in shadowlands that bolvar was at his wit's end when he fought sylvanas . He was fighting with the jailer in his head the entire time
B OMEGALUL L V A R
Sylvanas was empowered by the jailer of the most evil souls ever to exist in the entire universe (who is also on the same level as or stronger than a titan).
Bolvar was not Arthas. He never embraced the power his crown gave him. He saw it as a burden. He spent his entire life serving the light and then was tasked with holding shadow at bay.
IMO Sylvanas told him he was unfit to wear the crown because he did not want to use its power.
So to me, it made sense.

I came here to comment just this.... absolutely.
What’s crazy is that on its own, it is incredible. But if you know the backstory of Arthas, it somehow even goes to another level, as the narration is absolutely perfect.
"They're like undead!" Oh, my sweet, innocent, child... The Game of Thrones white walkers has nothing on the Scourge.
At least the white walkers are a hivemind so you get the head they die. The scurge is literally just that a never ending scurge of death.
yea... they dont need you to be dead to make you one of them too :P Plague is real
yea you can have easier time at killing them... ut they can make anything from bones of living beings means they can kind of reproduce easier too
I think plague is way too dangerius than "oh no you died at north now you are undead"
plague on the other hand... its literal pandemic, it doesnt truly kill you too you are still moving and everything and makes you want to spread it too... making it greatly dangerious.
hypercringe comment
well, they are undead
🤣🤣
I mained blood dk until i quit during bfa. Death knights imo have the best lore and are OP.
No he just changed from blood presence to frost presence, not the spec 😂

the undead elf chick, killed the guy in the 2nd cinematic.
the guy in 3rd cinematic, which replaced the guy in the 1st cinematic, beaten by the chick that was killed by guy in the 1st cinematic
Your post should be confusing, but I followed it all, and I respect you for that lol
hes gonna get so confused about that lol
The first guy also killed the character doing the voice over... He did a lot of killing... And unkilling. Making the "favorite chick" a banshee etc.
2 bad 3rd guy is so much wekaer then 1st guy, due he has only half of the power of true lich king, luck of shadowmourn hurts
Imma try to keep it simple :
The one from the Lich King trailer and Shadowlands one aren't the same guy.
Ok I know a little about wow lore but that last part I didnt know... so what happens if now people die? They can just to back to azeroth
extra enigmo there's a bit to go into but as basic as I can put it, because of lore stuff souls are not being distributed around the Shadowlands like they should and instead are all being funneled to The Maw (hell basically)
Literly all of lich kings power vomes from crown?srsly?who thought you lore?
Nerzhul's power comes from a complete armor set crafted to cature his soul the blacksmith of this armor set was kiljaiden(in warcraft 3 the armor is clear in cutsences but un wow they decided to lay a hand on things)
beside of the armor set there was also a blade called frostmourne this blade was made by dreadlords for the champion of the lich king and it isnt really connected to nerzhul by any means
The blacksmith of the sword is unnoun but it is sayd that dreadlords ORDERED it to be crafted they didnt craft it themselves
And according to stuff we found in shadowlands we can almost certainly say the blacksmith is the jailor of damned but then again(almost certain ALMOST)

"He leveled up" Nah my man's still stuck at level 80.

i'd even say, watch some of the even earlier warcraft movies.
for 20-30 year old cinematics, they are still really good.
the cinematic, where Arthas comes back home from Northrend is 20 years old, but still better than what most game studios are capable of today. (Arthas' betryal)
and the Warcraft 2 cinematics look outdated today, but when u remember they are like 25+ years old...
Not only from wow, warcraft 3 too.
throw in Arthas's fall from WC3 and the fall of the Lich King in game cutscene fromt the end of ICC
Do you all forget about the end of the war over mount Hyjal? Or Illidans intro with the skull of Gul'dan? (which, btw would be a good starting point if he ever was to watch both the BC and the WoD trailers) if you start looking them, you gotta go down the entire rabbit hole XD
"blizzard" makes million dollar game that is filler for cinematics

Although she's undead, she's still mortal, but her soul is not going to Shadowlands as any other soul would, her soul is going to some endless void afterlife and she's so afraid of it that she's trying to win against the circle of life and death to escape this fate.
and bolvar is more weken than Arthas as Lich King
Her soul would be going into the Shadowlands. Into the maw
@@barator03 I think it is The Maw, but didn't want to assume it since I've never seen it be explicit told to be The Maw :)
Bolvar is not undead, he was brought back from brink of death. Altho as per his words "dragon's flame sealed my fate" - he wasn't neither mortal, nor undead, something in between because of life giving powers of red dragons.
@@War3pl it was never clear if Bolvar was resurrected by Arthas or saved somehow by Alextraza, i hope we see the explanation in Shadowlands

Bolvar lost because he flipped to frost spec and had a 2H weapon equipped.
I mean... I dunno about you, but I can solo LK at 120 no probs. Probably faster than that.
Bolvar just sat on his throne throughout the expansions, and missed out on the grind :P So technically he was lvl 80 against a lvl 120
If Arthas only knew to what it'll come when he turned her into the banshee.
Dude, it physically hurts me seeing you watching and trying to breakdown these trailers nearly without context and only basic storyline. Makes me feel desperately to sit down and update you on that, and by the comments and reactions I guess I'm not the only one lol
.

I just found your channel, by the time I'm making this comment, I didn't even hit the subscribe button yet. I loved your work! Congrats!
It hurt me too i hope he listen to you
It hurts me more that this whole trailer is visually beautiful but lore wise its stupid AF and should be removed and retconed

Richard Ommundsen Bolvar actually was the acting leader of the humans during Varian’s disappearance. He was the Regent Lord of Stormwind.
Richard Ommundsen he was leader while anduin was a child
@@tropigame3270 I thought Varian was leader when Anduin was a child lol wat
There must always be a Lich King, until Sylvanas decides I am going to break the system.
th-cam.com/video/8MUc-rQD8j0/w-d-xo.html
19:33 By breaking the Helm of Domination, she literally shattered the barrier between the world of the living and the dead - the Shadowlands.
That first "king" isn't the same one as in the Shadowlands cinematic. The "new" one basically got saved from a poison cloud by red dragons through them burning it. And as they stand for life, he looks like that now.
This is actually a really cool series, the reactions are nice but the breakdown of the filmmaking techniques and effects really make it different.
Keep it up man.
@Dodadeus exactly, he really found his place on the platform
watch them all
From a storytelling perspective one of the things I really love about the Lich King cinematic is how it uses contrasting characterization to really paint the picture of how wrong things have gone with this character.
You don't need the backstory, you don't need the details; the seed of what you really need to know is planted in your imagination to grow without a loredump.
hands down Arthas's / Lich king's story is one of the best storys ever developed in gaming history
I suggest to watch Warbringers Sylvanas + Fall of the Lich king remastered to fill up the context that you are missing
Or all of the Warbringers even. They are all pretty cool.
Before he watches Warbringers Sylvanas he should watch the reforged Warcraft 3 Culling campaign trailer if he want to fill his lore knowledge. Not that it is worthy of his time to analyzing it for an video.

"It's the ice guy, he leveled up!" man if only you knew...
"How is she so powerful?"
She made a deal with a guy that's storing the souls of everyone that died recently (how recently we still don't know) and he's giving her power proportionally to how many deaths she causes. She then starts the bloodiest war in recent history so this gives her a massive power-up.

@@pvtrowden Me too, me too, bruv.
@B Ball the Others from the books were very different from the White Walkers of the show though.
We will see him in shadowlands again
totally, i'm Alliance since vanilla & i cried when Saurfang died :( Nothing like Warcraft lore.
I'm gonna need a "sick" counter.
I love his reaction when he hears the lich king theme for the first time. Priceless.
In the Wrath of the Lich King, you were on a right track. The one scene from Game of thrones S7 is inspired exactly by this trailer! If you compare the Night Kings dragon flying over the undead army and this, they're the same.
I'm crying over here, your enthusiasm is infectious! Way to go!

Yeah I've seen a few of this guy's reaction vids. He totally overreacts to get more clicks.
@Ace Arch Arthas also kicked the shit out Illidan with relative ease showing how powerful he really was.
U have to see: fall of the lich king to understand why he´s on fire now
Remember what Saurfang told Thrall: "We Don't get to Run"
The conclusion of the Old Soldier Cinematic was the moment he realized that very thing.
I think you meant "We dont get to hide." But otherwise, it's true.

I really like your analyzing the movie parts :) the one thing I value also a big deal in such a trailer is the whole dialogue or narrative plot embracing the visual effects. I think especially in the first trailer they did an amazing fusion of what the narrator says and what the picture shows
eg. "you grew into a weapon" - arthas draws the sword
"stir the hearts of your people" - undead show their glow (which could mean they have no heart)
"you shall be king" - we see arthas from underneath (like we kneel before a king)
i find such details very important and very cool to observe :)

-----
The Shadowlands Cinematic is showing us how powerful Sylvanas has become, and how changed the new Lich king is (Bolvar Foredragon).

There is a connection between Arthas and Sylvanas. And another between Sylvanas and Lodaeron. (LOL!)

I love how supportive everyone is in the comments about explaining lore and what not. Good stuff!
Also hell yes, 100k, so deserved. Let's go for another 100k ;)
hell yeah!
@@MrShadowThief That's... actually a very interesting point I hadn't considered. Thanks!
"He looks like a White Walker version of Sauron" OMG that's very accurate actually
If you know the backstory of Arthas, you will realize how sad and ironic that monologue is from the first cinematic
@@123yano I think if you don't have previous knowledge, you can still feel the irony, especially the last sentence.
Another great Cinematic you can watch for context comes from Warcraft III called Human Ending Cinematic, in which Arthas The Lich King interacts with his father.
Watch WoW: cataclysm next. It’s literally fire.
The sky shattering is probably the coolest effect they've had in all of their cinematics, imo. I love watching crowd reaction videos of that moment.
"How is she so powerful"
tldr: She made a secret deal with a kind of death god and every person who has died for the last few years has had their soul turned into fuel that gives her power. So right now she is probably the most powerful being on the planet.
Which is something blizzard didn't lead to in a way that would be meaningful just kinda happened
@@NonsensicalSpudz true.
So she's a mary sue
Sounds like bad writing
Most powerful being on the planet, but gets destroyed by a group of like 12-14 people in pink robes. Welcome to WoW :D
Small bit of info: Saurfang, from the old soldier trailer, lost his son in Icecrown Citadel, which is ruled by the Lich King.
"Someone please explain this to me, I don't get it"
The short version is that she cut a deal with a figure from the afterlife called the Jailer of the Damned, lord of The Maw.
I'm glad you're enjoying reacting to WoW content, I found your channel from your Battle for Azeroth video and I can't wait for you to react to more of Blizzard's fantastic cinematics.
Drinking game: Take a shot every time Chris says "Sick"
Died of alcohol poisoning, 3/10 would not recommend.
It's so hard to focus on what he's trying to say when every other word is "sick." Throw in a "cool" or "awesome" once in a while, jeeeeez.
"That is like a painting" yeah, I have that as my desktop background XD
Me too. It looks gorgeous on my new fancy monitor
Woah that Onyx Black playbutton is siick. I was confused for a sec because I'd never seen one like that. Congrats! Welcome to the 100k club.
Won't lie. Love these videos purely for the reactions. Has the sort of reaction you want when you're showing someone an amazing video you've already seen. Watching them get hyped.
"He looks like a white walker Sauron"
That's pretty much what he is
hahaha sick!
@@ChrisConnorFilms The scene that you referenced about it reminding you of Game of Thrones is suspected to be heavily influenced by this cinematic, possibly a conscious nod at WoW. th-cam.com/video/T8vH0TaIDNY/w-d-xo.html
@@ChrisConnorFilms Night King from Game of Thrones is basically 2 dollar rip off from Lich King, the whole scene after the wall fell down is rip off from this cinematic.
I can't wait for him to watch the Warlords or Draenor cinematic. "Times change"
It’s so nice watching people react to these who’ve never played the game. It brings me back to when to when I first watched these cinematics myself and the excitement I felt.
@@Hust91 Ding Ding Ding, It's almost as if blizzards writing staff is terrible
Garrosh was actually a dreadlord lol, he killed Caine for the megabants and manipulated magatha grimtotem in to poisoning his weapon, l0l"
Fuck it, at this point i wouldn't be surprised if blizzard came out and said "You were a dreadlord all a long lol" and renamed the game Dreadlord of Dreadcraft.
What if blizzard are the dreadlords and they are actually creating a simulation where they make a really good story in and we all play fictional characters but they run out of idea on what to do so they start changing everything to be really fucking stupid
I'm being increadibly facetious but my point is that if blizzard are just going to start playing fast and loose with the lore then what's the point of it existing, what's the point in me investing in it when they clearly have no fucking clue what to do and come up with dog shit ideas that compremise the integrity of every single piece of world building that has come till this point. I am now at a point where i can not take previous events as facts because of a) and actual Lore reason which suggests that a shadow illuminati could be pulling the strings behind everything or b) because blizzard do not care about the previous lore
Also bro, i've dropped you paragraphs of my opinions on this and you've maybe took into account a couple of lines and called me simple, saying it's pointless to talk to me when you've barely engaged in a discussion at all?
Ia agrees with "no one". Chriss, you should see "The Warbringers" cinematics, there is a lot to talk about there, especially about design.
Its nice to see a non wow player loving the cinematics n lore.
