I miss these days when malls and even some larger businesses had plants throughout the building. It felt more lively and less sterile.
And the fountains.

We still have the live plants at the mall in my hometown. The mall itself hasn't really changed since opening in 1990. Probably the only place in town I actually enjoy going to because of the nostalgia.

Yes, and don't you remember our boomer parents saying the same thing? My dad w his stories about growing up in the fifties and how it wasn't like that anymore. Things are always simpler when you're young. Every generation will think their childhood was the last good time to be alive 😊

Crazy how the internet and social media gives people the impression that the 80's-90's were some sort of utopia, when the crime rate was double what it is today and AIDS was spreading like wildfire.

Me and my son have been noticing this a lot and he just mentioned it today when we passed a brand new shopping mall that has just been completed….it is grey and white and really boring!

@@realgone222 Yeah, the grunge look was more about stringy, unwashed hair and flannel shirts and cargo pants, the total opposite of the 80s.
It depended on what part of the country you were in, and how fast people adapted to new fashions. I know by the fall of 1992, the 90s fashions came into my school, whereas in 1991 and spring 1992, people still kinda sorta walked around like 1989, 1990...not fully....but mostly.

One piece of advice I wish someone had given me as a kid would be, "It won't always be like this."
Might sound weird, but as a kid I just thought "This is the way the world is". Alf will always be on tv, Micheal Jackson will always be popular, going to malls and renting videos on Friday is just part of life. I always knew I would grow up, but I had no notion the world would change. If I did, I think I would have tried to enjoy it more. Or maybe not. Who knows.
Living through this time frame as a kid, I never thought it would stay the same. Part of the feel of the 90s was the idea that things will continue to get better and better. I hope we all can get back to that feeling.

I didn't imagine social media like MySpace and Facebook to blow up to out of control proportions and attention whores getting popular and famous, exploiting not only themselves but their families and babies, etc. It's so bizarre.

The 90s were great. On tv we had, married with children, Roseanne, home improvement, and Seinfeld. Music, we had choice of Metallica, guns and roses, REM or Nirvana. Cars were still cool and people dressed nice, big hair and no cellphones. Good times!
I remember the days of watching new episodes of Seinfeld, the Simpsons, X-Files, and hearing grunge on the radio. It was a great time to be young.
Definitely a great decade of stuff being released. What's funny though is all those things are still available, plus a ton more new things, and we don't even have to wait to watch episodes. Yet 90% of the comments on here of people complaining about how "bad" things are today.

In 92, i was 22 and had just got my CDL and begin my career as a truck driver. The days of paper logs, cabover tractors and cowboy truck drivers.
And proper truckers! You scare me more than I scare you! I remember seeing a truck on its side on Route 50. Scared the crap outta me.

Wow! This is my hometown mall! I was starting my senior year of high school in August '92. I didn't see anybody I recognized but Lubbock is the Hub City and attracts people from many counties around Lubbock.

The early 90's were beautiful and heartwarming times. If I had a time machine, the early 90's would be one of my top 3 destinations.
People were happy in the malls, shopping, buying, and eating. Those days are gone and never coming back.

I worked at the mall in my late teens and early 20's between 1990 and 1995. This is like a recording of my own memories of the sights and sounds of the mall. I can also recall the smell of the fountain mixed with the smell of the food court. It wasn't a bad smell, just different, and the mall was the only place that had that smell. People who remember those times know what I'm talking about.
Yes! I remember the slight smell of chlorine in the air. Along with the sound of the fountain.

Aw no don’t be sad. It’s good to look back on good times and remember where you’ve been, but it is a NECESSITY to be present in the moment. All you have is NOW. Make it what you want! You have the power to change nearly anything in your immediate life.
I graduated college in December 1992. Seems like a lifetime ago. I'm so glad that I experienced this. It also dawns on me that I still dress this way. 😆

Look at my grandparents generation at 2:49. When I was a kid back then I was on full mute around old folks but now I'm older and now got a million questions to ask them but I can't now because they're all gone.

Speaking of shoes, notice all the kids are wearing shoes and socks, like every last one? Today most kids I see are wearing sandals. Bet we are going to see a lot of foot problems later in life because of it. I'm in my 40s and have no foot issues and its because I grew up wearing Nike's and other quality shoes.

people were more relaxed and happy and had more money to spend back then. nobody wanted a mobile phone in 1992. or cared about internet. malls were crowded and safe fun places. now malls are dead and dangerous.

Everywhere is dangerous now in 🇺🇲, even my once safe suburb which used to have very little crime -- property damage used to be the worst crime. Now we have husbands pushing pregnant wives down the steps, killing them, husbands and fathers slaughtering the entire family.

If you watch the 1997 high school video (just five years later) you’ll notice that fashion and styles changed very quickly. The 70s, 80s, and 2000s were all relatively consistent in music and fashion, but if you compare early 90s, to mid 90s, to late 90s it all

@@EdwardWeissbard Born in 65. A kid in the 70s, teen/young adult in the 80s, met my future wife, married and had kids in the 90s. Although life sometimes was not good to me and there were tough times I can say without a doubt, once 2000 hit, society went down hill from there, it just got worse and worse. Once social media came about and screens became more prevalent, things tanked even more.
You have to think too... it will be even a worse of a nightmare in 2056 (another 32 years later) and we will probably be saying the same thing.
So, it remains true....cherish TODAY!

The early 90's was a amazing time to be a kid I miss this era so much from the music to the arcade fighters and consoles to the old school computers.
Mid-late 90s is also better to be a teenage and be adult in early 00s is MUCH better that we expect.

This was prime mall years for me, late 80s early 90s. You didn't need to shop, you could just hang out and stay cool on a hot summer day.

I was in 6th grade in '92. I remember these hair and clothing styles so well. I miss this era of time. Being a kid was awesome in the 80's and early 90's. I'm so glad I got to experience it firsthand!

Something that I note is the difference between the colors and designs from malls in the 90's, many like this one were more earthy, brownish and some were more colorful, Memphis-style. But nowadays you feel like you are in a freaking operating room, everything is so sterile, bright and white. Can't help to think that it might influence people's behaviour and how they feel.

Well no smartphones, just some shoppers had newspapers to read, some started smoking in the mall while their kids went to the arcades to play video games.

Love these days. Miss them terribly sometimes . Its bittersweet, bc it was such a happy time for me but i know ill never be able to experience it again. I was born in 85 so my childhood was literally the 90s. And no one give me the " stop romanticizing the past" nonsense. Im very much aware of reality, im not saying there werent problems n im def not saying the world would be perect if we went back in time. But i was a child living an extremely happy carefree life. Personally for me its those feelings i long to get back..not necessarily the 90s itself. I also would love to go back to be able to be around family members that i have lost since then. Hope that makes sense. Theres a difference between romanticizing the past n simply looking back on the past with fond memories n wishing u could re live it again briefly. Ijs if a 2wk vacation destination was "my childhood in the 90s" id be booking a ticket asap lol.

Man, what it was to be a kid in the mall in '92. Spending hot Southern California afternoons hanging with my friends at the arcade, the food court, Sam Goody, etc. Not a phone in sight. People watching for an afternoon with your friends made you feel like the world was yours and that time stood still. I'm 37 now. You never know that you're in the good ol' days until they're over.

It's nice to see that the glory of the 80's was still around in 1992, the hair, the clothes and the accessories. People were wearing more denim and cotton tops with simple designs and straight-cut pants. I don't like the tapered styles that both men and women are wearing nowadays, especially the dystopian style sweatpants that people walk around in.
Damn! I hate the nostalgia stuff. But yes, I'm going to do it. I was 19 that year and I do remember those clothing styles from back then. Leftover 80's bright colors toned down, but they were still pretty wild. Ah! I'm an old! And oh man! Miller's Outpost at 1:58

The 80s probably lasted until 1997 in Lubbock.
Love the brightly colored vintage pieces you see here, whether it's the family at 0:03, the sweater at 1:14, the multi-colored top at 1:45, the yellow blue top at 2:40, the mother's outfit at 3:29, or the older woman's Mondrian top at 3:58. You have a sense of a distinct style of bright dynamic colors that I haven't come across in other videos on this channel from this era, and you can understand why the grunge look of Kurt Cobain's worn, faded thrifted clothes had such an impact.

I was 25 in 1992, maybe that's why I think this way, it's hard to explain, but the women seemed to be so much prettier. I don't know if it's as simple as the hair styles or style of dress. It seems that most of the women carry themselves so much better back then. They're walking straighter, more confidence, smiling more....
I recommend taking a look at U.S. obesity rates over time. In addition to this, western women have become more masculine which many men find unattractive.

Commenting on your video from 1977 since YT disabled the comment because it detected minors. It's amazing how much more antiquated things were back then VS when this video was made or even the one recording the family watching TV in 1988. Even the way the little dude towards the beginning says "come on Ace" sounds so past time and innocent. Really shows how rapidly things progressed. Feel like we have been crawling since the 2000s.

This is the first of these videos where I’ve actually been in the mall featured in person! We lived 3 hours from here in the 80s and early 90s and would maybe once a year travel to this mall…it was bigger than ours, as I recall. This was amazing to watch.

This looks like it was before 92. I'm guessing 89? The fashion, the big hair, colorful clothing, etc. 92 is when there was a mass adoption of baggy pants.
I live in a large metro area and drive 1 hour south to the boonies and they are always 3 years behind in fashion trends.
That looks like the early 90's to me. Especially the hair styles.

Yeah, you're probably right. I remember 92 vividly... I had a blast in middle school, but things changed in 92 when I turned a freshman in HS. All the friends I used to skated with, stopped skating and became wannabe gangsters and taggers. Dre Dre Chronic was released in 92, and Cypress Hill was popular as well. Everyone just became different during these years. Living in LA, I also remembered the 92 riots. Race issues were huge down here. The 90's were still fun though, but the 80's was the best imo.
Nah this is extremely '92 (esp in the boonies/suburbs): oversized teal t-shirts, stonewashed denim shorts, white socks and Reeboks, scrunchies. At least that's what was all over FL when I was a kid.
This mall is in Texas, so the big teased hair is accurate.
94 is when grunge took over and the 80's styles were long gone..
That early 90s White suburban mom hairdo was just awful. Not sure why almost literally every woman had it. At 3:22 is the 1 single brunette with really nice hair, even for 2024. Probably the single only legit hot woman in 1992 lol!
nah, just watch 90s movies and you'll see how hot women were then. As well as the 80s. So much more feminine. (I was one of them, as I'm now a 61 year old woman! ) :D
I missed out on the 90's at least I can see what it was like. My mom told me a lot about it.
I was 28 and young at that time - 32 years later it went like a flash. Now I’m old - we are here for just a nano second to put it into perspective.

I was 10 years old that year and have many memories of my parents taking me to our local mall and walking around. Amazing how different the world is today. I feel like I live in some kind of alternate reality today or something and that at some point I'll wake up in my bed in 1992 and it was all just some kind of strange twisted dream.

That's how people dress now, not back then. It was August in Texas and almost everyone is wearing shoes and socks and some are wearing pants. Now it's shorts and sandals even at nice restaurants.
Back when the aesthetic of malls were warm, wood, green, and overall inviting. Today, all shopping places look like bland, sterile, hospital environments.
Yeah, I hated it when most of my local malls renovated. Besides the bland designs, it's the harsh, bright white lighting that makes it seem more uninviting and harder on the eyes, too. I miss the softer, dimmer lights that used to make stores, malls, and restaurants look warm and cozy.

Same with people homes, so sick of this so called modern look.
@@billybassman21 A lot of hotels are adopting this sterile look, too. Thank goodness my mom also doesn't like the modern look. I'd be depressed in a house that looks like an office, prison, or hospital. Warm, cozy, and homey designs cannot make a comeback soon enough!

Look at all the umbrella strollers. You dont see that anymore.
My cousin had an umbrella stroller all the way up in 2004. They're still around and I miss them, because they usued to be brighter and more colorful. Now the strollers are all dark and nasty looking, bulky. Past strollers had happy, jolly designs back then and you could really tell they were built with the kids in mind. Now it's all funeral colors lol, if not boring designs just like in the cars.
Warm interiors, people interacting with each other and not their phones, just an overall chill vibe.
Man, I remember being 8 in 1992..
I actually miss going to the mall and getting things in a bag. like carrying a few from different stores. it feels luxury
