I am never going to stop pointing out how racist and insulting it is that producers think that "diversity" means race-swapping black people into roles where their presence makes no sense. As pointed out here, they could write stories about diverse people, they could produce documentaries on African history or folklore, they could write new content that is super diverse (The Expanse excelled at this). ROP could have included a nation of people of color, fleshed out the culture, the characters...but no. We're supposed to feel "represented" because they inexplicably throw a random black dwarf and elf into an otherwise white race of people. It's not just idiotic - it's insulting. And I am so sick of people of color celebrating this kind of crap as some kind of "victory," when all it is is Hollywood telling you they want your money enough to throw you a bone, but they don't actually respect you enough to include you as equals.

    • @sianais

Couldn't have said it better myself. And yes, Rings of Power should have fleshed out the Haradrims from Far-Harad and included a few characters that migrated to Middle-Earth to rebel against Morgoth. Nobody would have had a problem with it, just as nobody would be saying anything if The Little Mermaid reboot was an original African mermaid fairytale, or if Netflix made a few documentaries depicting the history of African kings and queens. It's not the presence of Black people that's insulting, it's the incompetent hands of the people running the shows and movies.

It is not persoanl, it is just business. Of course, you would have NO CLUE because you are a child of the matrix, television and bogus public educational system. Let’s get the definition of Ham out of the so-called Jewish generated Zondervan’s Pictorial Bible Dictionary: “Ham - The youngest son of Noah, born probably about 96 years before the Flood; and one of the eight persons to live through the Flood. He became the progenitor of the dark races; NOT THE NEGROS, but the Egyptians, Ethiopians, Libyans and Canaanites.” The original Ham was dark brown. The definition of Ham above tells us t things: 1. The TRUE egyptian is a dark brown skin tone. 2. The TRUE people of Yisrael are brown also, not caucasoid. The present so-called Egyptians have been transplanted in the those lands, PERIOD.
Genesis 10:6-20 - And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. {10:7} And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan. {10:8} And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth. {10:9} He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD. {10:10} And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar. {10:11} Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah, {10:12} And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city. {10:13} And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, {10:14} And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim. {10:15} And Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth, {10:16} And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite, {10:17} And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite, {10:18} And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad. {10:19} And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha. {10:20} These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

Remember when being considered honest, and having an aspiration to be thought of as an honest person, was a high and noble goal to work towards? One of the reasons I loved fantasy stories when I was growing up is those values aligned with my own. How casually people lie, twist and deceive these days. It's almost considered naive and maybe a little tragic, to still value and believe in virtues. Especially if those beliefs emerge outside of a space where some self righteous preacher is ranting them at you from a pulpit.

I recently found a cringe-worthy German docu-series called "Women Who Made History", in which, among other famous women, the story of Cleopatra is told. In the episode dedicated to the Egyptian queen, Antony's troops defeat Octavian in Actium thanks to a strategy devised by Cleopatra, being Agrippa's supposed victory just something that the First Emperor made up in order to avoid his reputation being damaged. There is not a single piece of evidence that states Augustus' victory in said Battle was just a fabrication, and I remind you that we are talking about a documentary whose purpose is to "inform"

Of course this was when black superhero movies were the likes of Meteor Man, Blank Man and Steel (starring the Lawrence Olivier of our time, Shaquille O'Neal). They make superhero movies with black characters that aren't even jokes, and they wondered why they bombed. Then Marvel took a gamble on Blade with Wesley Snipes and treated seriously and with respect and it not only made good money, it kick-started a franchise and launched Marvel Studios and taught Marvel that you can take comic accurate characters and put them on the big screen and it will resonate with audiences.

I think part of the problem is that if they were up front about it, some people would still freak out, but most wouldn’t care. If they said they wanted to reimagine the story of Cleopatra with a black lead, most people wouldn’t care. But when you try to insist that you’re making an accurate retelling and everyone knows it isn’t, you’re going to catch heat for it. Hollywood has been accused of whitewashing for decades. And it’s true, though it’s far less common now. But they never tried to assert that Egyptians were white. They just wanted to get famous white actors to play these rolls of Egyptian gods or half-Asians or whatever. And it’s fair that some people don’t like that. But they never tried treated the audience like idiots and tried to make them believe they were always white. At least, not in the last decade. Obviously it has happened and there’s been pushback against it.

This is one of those things where you know they did it just to make you mad, so if you walk right into the trap you're willingly going down into the mud with them. It's a shame that they aren't interested in telling really interesting stories. Cleopatra was a common Greek name, Alexander the great's sister was named Cleopatra. If you wanted to make an interesting story you could go with his mom, Olympias. People were afraid she was a sex sorceress and she carried around and slept with live snakes. Or go to the other end of the Achaemenid empire (the Persians from "300") to Tomyris. She was a warrior queen from the steppe who killed Cyrus the Great, the founder of the empire, to avenge the death of her son. The frustrating thing is that if they want to tell stories about women from history there are a lot of them out there.
Edit: I thought about this some more and they could have made a series about the Queen of Sheba or the woman who overthrew her line, Gudit. They both ruled over Egypt, or parts of it, and they were both black and had interesting (though possibly mythical) stories.
Edit 2: I was reading more and just a couple years after Cleopatra died the Romans tried to keep going south into Africa's Kush kingdom. They had a vicious war with the one-eyed, dual sword wielding black queen and her sons which they eventually lost. The Romans never went south again. That would have made for a more interesting series.

In fact, they're systemically trying to make people sick and tired of them. The more they keep shoehorning black people into roles that clearly are pandering and just not appropriate for them, the more the viewing audience realizes and the more annoyed they'll get of seeing them being pushed forward while others aren't getting that same shine in the light. In fact, so many African Americans are already sick and tired of this shit and can feel this storm coming their way. Don't be surprised to find out Hollywood knows this and continues this crusade. At this point if it's apparent to so many people, then there's something there.

I did not know Octavian was the first grand wizard of the KKK. This documentary was eye opening.

I'm amazed, it came up to 2% audience score, it was at 1% for a few days... must have been a lot of Positive 'Review Bombing' ^^
I will admit, the idea of Danny as Abraham Lincoln would be great, it'd need to be a parody of history show/series though... and that sort of thing works when done right.
