I just can't get over that they want Galadriel to be a Warrior Princess, yet they make her incredibly stupid. She was hunting down a being that is practically godlike with NINE elves who couldn't handle ONE Troll. WTF was their plan for her after finding him?

    • @angbandsbane

@Todd Taylor She was going to demand to see his manager. And, since Morgoth is off floating in the void, that means Sauron would have to get lost in space trying to find him.

I don't remember the exact quote, but I remember Tolkien saying of Galadriel something like "She could read peoples' hearts, but she judged them with mercy." She could literally read minds, but she still judged with mercy. She didn't condemn Boromir, even when she knew he would try to take the ring. Not as frequently, but even Galadriel was said to have been supremely arrogant, wanting to rule over her own kingdom and full of pride. It's among the reasons she was banned from Valinor. Certainly, the elves like to think of themselves as above it all, but that hasn't always been true. That said, I do take issue with the elves in other, more explicitly lore breaking ways such as them carving the visages of their dead into trees.

I commented in another video that the two creators (J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay) have no previous experience in film. Other than Patrick McKay having a minor writing gig on Star Trek Beyond (which wasn't even credited in the movie according to IMDb - to show how minor a writing gig it was) they two had nothing. It is almost like Amazon approached two people on the street and asked them if they would like an opportunity to spend $1 billion making a TV series on Tolkien's work.
There is no indication these two knew of Tolkien, had read Tolkien, or even liked Tolkien. It is like this project started as a three page synopsis of this literary classic and these two went to town creating their own story and stayed within the confines of that three page synopsis and ignored everything else.
I wouldn't even label this as fan fiction. Because that assumes the writers are fans to begin with, which in all honesty I doubt. This was just a paying gig with an obscene amount of money which gave them way to much creative liberty with an IP that would give even an experienced Producer time to pause and reflect how to proceed because you know it is going to end badly if you do it poorly.
To be fair, Amazon's promotional material on these two indicate a larger history in Hollywood than what IMDb gives them credit for. It claims that these two have been pretty much glued to the hip for 25 years working together and besides working with JJ Abrams, Bad Robot to do the Star Trek Beyond also wrote Disney's Jungle Cruise.
I bring up both of these works because both should have raised alarms. It is well publicized that the deal between Bad Robot and WB has soured and WB wants out. Not that I can blame them as JJ Abrams doesn't appear to hold up his end on the deal with much content for WB. The one work that Abrams seems to be putting all his energy into "Deminonde" appears to be too costly for WB to continue to support and the project is likely to be shelved before it is even completed. But the one writing gig these two did for Abrams, Star Trek Beyond under performed. It barely broke even in the US box office with production costs and what revenue was generated internationally mostly stayed in those countries or had to cover advertisement expenses. In short the movie flopped. Badly.
And that leaves us to Jungle Cruise. A movie that might as well be call Pirates of the Amazon River because the plot mirrors the main storyline of two of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. One being the idea of undead pirates/conquistadors, the other being the idea of immortality. In Pirates it was the Fountain of Youth. In Jungle Cruise it was the Tree of Live. But my point is that script should have shown Amazon that these two (Payne and McKay) were devoid of their own ideas. Instead of coming up with some other reason to travel up the Amazon River, they literally stole ideas from one of Disney's own franchises. Further, as if history was destined to repeat itself, Jungle Cruise didn't just under perform in the box office, it didn't even break even.
So why anybody at Amazon thought Payne and McKay could do Tolkien's work justice is beyond me. This was a train wreck waiting to happen. And the wreck did happen.
I have no idea if the management at Amazon who likely got a sneak pre-screening of the series thought it was an abomination or if they had never read Tolkien's work and assumed it had just the right "woke" to give Marvel's MCU a run for its money in that regard. But if somebody on that board had read Tolkien's work I'm sure he/she probably leaned back in the their chair and thought, "somebody is getting fired over this. Heads are going to roll when the fans get a hold of it".
We see now Amazon's response. The fans hate it. And with good reason. JSG is not the only fan on TH-cam who has address how badly this series failed at interpreting Tolkien's work. I looked at Rotten Tomatoes right before I typed this response. Fan approval was at 38%. Earlier today it was hovering between 35 - 36%. A two percent raise indicates RT is skewering the numbers by removing negative reviews, but this site has been known for this behavior for quite some time so there really is no surprises there. The slow tick upward just indicates that they are just staying a little ahead of the people posting more bad reviews.

They did Finrod (Galadriel's brother) real dirty. He was a very, very important character in Tolkien's works. He was the first elf to befriend humans. You know the ring Aragorn wears? Finrod is the guy who gave it to Aragorn's ancestor, Barahir. He was essentially the first bridge between elves and humans. By saving Beren (the ancestor of countless key characters including Aragorn, Elrond and the entire Numenorian race) he made it possible for Morgoth, and by extension, Sauron, to be defeated. He was the first elf to be brought back from the dead as a reward for the great things he accomplished.
Now he's literally just a plot mechanism ("i Kn0w Sauwon is still out dewe and I have to f1nD hIm DURRR") there for the single purpose of allowing Galadriel to do things that, well, she never did . . . Utterly ridiculous.
Edit: They actually could have made a decent show just from the appendixes- it just would have had to have been about Elendil, Isildur and Anarion, and I think that would've been pretty damn cool. They didn't have the rights to the Silmarillion, and they couldn't reference anything that wasn't mentioned in LOTR and its appendixes SO WHY? Why did they make this dumpster fire? It's so awful.

Right and now gilgalad is stupid and believes Sauron is going and Elrond isn’t worried about him either. Even though they were the most vigilant and turned Sauron away as annatar. Galadriel was skeptical but not to the extent of Elrond. I mean Galadriel is bad ass but she’s bad ass in her own right and they’re trying to make her badass in the right of Elrond and gilgalad. How much you want to bet if it makes it to the end that Galadriel will be the one responsible for giving isidore the opportunity to cut the ring of Sauron instead of gilgalad and his father. And she’ll probably scream for them to destroy the right while Elrond stops her.

It began with the forging of the great films. Threads were given by Tolkien, wisest and fairest of them all. Rights were then given to Jackson; great miner and craftsman of the mountain of lore. And nine, nine hours were gifted to the race of men, who above all else, desired quality. But they were all of them deceived, for another show was made. In the land of Amazon, in the fires of Mount Prime, the Dark Lord Bezos forged in secret a master flop. And into this show he poured his malice, his greed and his will to dominate all film. One show to ruin them all

They should be angelic spirits walking the earth. They should shine with a light. In ROP they feel like humans with pointy ears. Tolkien seems to make it quite clear that you can tell an elf and a human apart. While elves might not all have been long haired. Instead, they crawled inside the body of an established and well-loved work, one with a far-reaching fanbase, in order to make use of the name and likeness of Tolkien's work.
What they've done is create a cinematic zombie. It looks like Tolkien's works in some respect, but it definitely can't claim to be that anymore. Like a zombie, it is a stilted and shambling creation, a mockery of what once made it vibrant, and it seeks to feast on our brains.

Honestly the bullying scene with elf kids just rubs me the wrong way because it's just not thematically elvish. Elves are immortal, creatures that persist, who came from undying lands. They would not be quick to destroy. They wouldn't just sink Galadriel's paper boat on a whim, even as kids.
My first idea was to do something like what Jarjar Abrams did on the first Star Trek movie he did, where he portrayed the Vulcans bullying kid Spock by making fun of his parentage and making him feel small. Galadriel should have made something beautiful, like a paper swan, only to have other kids redesign it, and then make her feel small as they say they have improved on what she had made crudely. Her mother could then teach her to understand that everyone sees beauty differently, but at the same time Galadriel could defend herself and say that they had no right to pervert her original design. This could then broach mythology and make them consider why Iluvatar made the Elves to begin with, or other creations of Iluvatar. This could then be thematically called back to later on as Morgoth and Sauron twist Elves into Orcs. They could have done something thematic, and instead they made Elves no different than Men. Because they have zero creativity or respect.

And somehow, the bullied the most beautiful, nice, charismatic, stroger and talented kid. Yep, totally accurate.
Bullied kids deserve support and hope, of course they need it, but they are not the only ones who can change themselves and the society or the only ones who need help. This trope only has encouraged people to look to being a victim and enjoy their own suffering.

They had such a good opportunity to actually write a conflicted Galadriel, wanting to rule her own kingdom, being extremely arrogant due to being the lady of light and having bathed in the light of the 2 trees, and being next of kin to the heroes that defeated morgoth.
A character arc of her traveling around trying to find a good place to settle and build a kingdom, and dealing with humans and other races, mediating conflicts and occasionally using her magic to defend against a dark threat, and eventually realizing that it would be better to join and help maintain an existing kingdom than building her own due to the growing threat.
It would give her inner conflict, a better way to tie her into the larger plot and actually show her prowess as a sorceress and diplomat.
With the way the show is going, she is going to fall to Saurons deceptions, while being one of the only people in middle earth that immediately realized he was planning something nefarious in the background.

@@suenzhong7891 Tolkien stated that Amazon translates to Gothwin which means "War Women". So I don't think he was just talking about her stature especially when the only other women he describes as amazonian are real warriors (Haleth the warrior queen, Makar's sister the goddess of war)
Also he states that "... she fought fiercely against Fëanor in defence of her mother’s kin, she did not turn back" in “The Shibboleth of Fëanor”.
In a crisis all elves fight against evil. Even Arondir says in Rings of power he was a grower before the war and not a warrior. It's common for elves to be warriors even if they have a normal "job".
Also this whole fighting with magic doesn't really exist. In war nearly everybody uses Weapons, even the Valar, Sauron, and even Gandalf a wizzard always fights with a sword. The only thing thats kinda similar to magic is the singing they sometimes did in Silmarillion but actual battles were always faught with weapons.
I don't think it's stated clearly that she was a physical warrior but from what we know about the elves and wars in general and with quotes like the above, it's believable that she fought with a sword before the third age.
And to OP's comment about Galadriel being better then anyone else, because she had lived in Valinor with the light of the Trees she is way more powerfull then other elves that didn't live with the valar. She also was trained in a lot of stuff by the Valar so of course she is way stronger then nearly all elves that are left in middle earth.

They don't care one way or the other WHY people are pissed and their interest is only on where the next paying gig is. Bonus points if they mention having never considered or studied writing before as if that gives them some unique insight into it.

The writers can make or break a show. My go too for this is the original Star Trek movies. Same cast for all 6 movies, playing the same characters. The difference is the writers and directors. Some of the movies are loved number 2 and 6, others are good, and some are ignored, number 5.
Now everyone needs to start somewhere in what ever job they start working in, but most people start out small. I’m going to use Orson Scott Card as an example. Card started out as an assistant editor on a church publication, while doing that he submitted short stories to other publications. One of those was a short story, about 60 to 70 pages, called Ender’s Game. After many more short stories and years later Ender’s Game became a complete full length novel. Card did not start out with a full length novel but did the work to build up too a full length novel. Card grew as a writer putting in the time and work.
To many writers today want to jump to the top of their game without putting in the work or the time. I can think of many reasons why this is, but have nothing to seriously back up those assumptions. What I do have is a string of movies and TV series that all all fall short of the original work. Maybe this is hubris on the screen writes part or just the lack of experience but it shows in their work.

The idea that Galadriel would go on a revenge quest for her brothers death (which itself is massively misrepresented) when the very nature of elves means she'll see him again.
The idea that Gil-Galad is the one giving permission for elves to go back to Valinor, instead of, you know, all Noldor being under a ban by the Valar.
The idea that an elf would just casually strike up a romance with a human (an event that, when happening in Tolkiens writings, always had MASSIVE significance)
The idea that a Silvan Elf would even have been in Valinor.
All of these things are massive contradictions to the events of the first age.
Nothing in Jacksons LotR trilogy came close to even ONE of these in terms of it's contradiction to otherwise established lore. I really am convinced that a lot of big entertainment companies are under the impression an IP's success is like intrinsic to the brand, and are inherently entitled to a success if they can only make something with that IP's name and likeness on it. Any complaints about its quality or adherence to canon lore, setting, plot, or character art is immediately dismissed as not coming from real fans because in their eyes a "real fan" likes it automatically because "it's that thing they like".

its simply disdain for their customers. they think people get attached to brands, and will buy whatever product is released with that brand slapped on it. and arguably, this applies to a lot of things. Anything with a Supreme logo slapped on it sells like hot cakes, even it its ridiculously overpriced and completely useless. However, they dont understand that people that read LOTR every year, are a different category of customers than people who buy brand clothing. What amazon did here is the equivalent of buying the Rolex brand and then selling cheap chinese knockoffs that cant tell time correctly.

I busted a gut laughing. Every single prediction I made for this show turned out absolutely right. Every. Last. One. The writing is grade-school level shit, the effects are lackluster at best, the plot is non-existent, the music is entirely forgettable, the actors can't act their way out of a paper bag, and when the characters aren't sinfully boring, they're unbelievably obnoxious and irritating. If you were to take a shot every time this all-together wretched show breaks the established Tolkien cannon, you'd die of alcohol poisoning before the first episode was even over. Congratulations, Amazon. You've managed to make a piece that I will now count among Dragon Ball Evolution and The Last Airbender as one of the worst adaptations ever made, and a piece that is both a terrible adaptation, and a terrible piece in its own right.

Have you noticed something interesting? When Hollywood shows us a "strong woman" she has all the characteristics described as "toxic" in men. Extreme aggression, violence, lust for power, ruthlessness, sexual entitlement, blatant sexism. All the things they say men should not display. Its almost as if......the women behind these movies are secretly jealous of men and wish to BECOME men through fantasy. Its almost like watching a mary sue fanfiction story written by a loser imagining herself in the position of the cool fighter guy. And because it is written by a loser the behaviour of the protagonist is an exaggerated caricature of what a real cool guy is like.

To add to your casting / age comments: I found it off-putting that there is zero acknowledgment of the relation between key Noldor characters. Galadriel is a generation older than Gil-galad and Celebrimbor, yet she looks to be in her 20s, while they appear middle-aged. She is portrayed as a peer to Elrond, who is 3 generations younger, and would likely view her with reverence as a matriarch of the line of Finarfin. And they are all cousins, to varying degrees of separation, yet there is no familiarity or kinship portrayed between them. Seems like they needlessly discarded the richness of these character interactions just so that they could give Galadriel some kind of underdog story. And one last thing - I guess Celeborn was just tossed away? You know, Galadriel's husband? I am pretty sure they married at the end of the First Age.

    • @christophertheriault3308

Husband is baggage, can't have a strong woman reliant on a man in any kind of way these days. Missed opportunity for free drama though, instead of Gil-Galad stupidly just deciding he doesn't want to fight a known evil it could have been Celeborn holding her back since as her husband he has a vested interest in her not being hurt.

To to show how messed up the time line is. Galadriel and Celeborn's daughter Celebrian was born in the second age 300. No sign of either of them. Elrond's brother Elros is still king of Numenor at this point and will be for another 142 years. However Ar-Pharazôn seems to be the king of Numenor is the series. He's the 25th king and crowned in the year SA3255, almost 3,000 years later. Given that Galadriel was born in the Year of Trees 1362, Celebrian is already older than her mother was when she was born during the show's setting and yet Galadriel still acts like a child.
A random extra :Elrond was already in love with Celebrian by the year SA1701

12:18 Actually, no. The Harfoots were one of the three groups of people that made up the Halflings. They were named thus by the ancestors of the Rohirrim, who found them, because of their size. Part of the Halflings migrated west in three groups, one of them being the Harfoots, while some of them stayed behind in the Vales of Anduin - Sméagol being a descendant of them. The ones travelling westwards eventually settled in the region later known as the Shire, and those were then known as Hobbits. That term isn't used anywhere else, which is why neither Gollum nor Treebeard (who is ancient!) know it. All Hobbits are Halflings, but not all Halflings are Hobbits.

I would be perfectly ready for a new story set in Middle-Earth. But it would have to be small in scale, with unknown characters, who weren't going to determine the fate of the universe. An epic saga that explains the origins of the most powerful beings in Lord of the Rings was just bound to fail.
