Cinemassacre I like castlevania 64 I even beat it multiple times with both Carrie and Reinhardt and the real final boss battle is awesome Dracula turns into a centipede like dragon and you fight him in the desert of hell it's pretty cool
9:18 This actually has an explanation. These candles are the work of Death. When he takes a soul, he traps it in a candle to light Dracula's castle. When the hunter breaks the candle, the soul gives him a gift - in this case, Hearts to power the hunter's weapons.
John Edelmann Yeah. I had heard about Roddy Piper dying while checking YT for some old WWF entrance themes. So I checked a Celeb Death site to see if it was true. Then I came across Christopher Lee's name, and was like, "Aw, balls!"
Castlevania 1 and 4 will ALWAYS be my favorite games in the series. 1 because the level design is as close to perfect as it gets, and 4 because the whip controls are amazing.
The lightning striking the grave in the intro made my old crappy TV turn off automatically because it overloaded it. Sure burned it into my memory having the room plunged into darkness when it happened at night. Same for the T2 movie intro where the endoskeleton turns and fires at the screen and other flashing lights.
Old tvs did wild stuff, I remember a console type that would leave a round lit orb in the center of the screen when you turned it off and I would have all the lights off and touch the screen and sometimes it would static shock you or just follow your finger around the outside of it..... ☻
This in my opinion is one of their best two part videos. Definitely in the top 5. Great game, great mood, great horror legacy discussion. Make more like this one guys.
Super Castlevania IV is not only one of the best Castlevania games (Dracula X on the Turbo/PC Engine CD gives it a run for its money and I don't like calling it "Rondo", I've always just called it Dracula X) it's also one of the best 16-bit games in existence. And there are a crap-ton of awesome 16-bit games. Damn that was a fine time to enjoy videogames. I'm glad I can still enjoy them today and that the game systems still work perfectly well. It makes me wonder if stuff like Xbox 360 or PS3 will ever be looked at with the same kind of nostalgia. "Holy crap dude. Remember all o' them Call of Duties? That was a hell of a time 2 be a gamer. Thems were teh dayz." I guess we'll have to wait and see.
If you call it Dracula x people think you mean that mediocre snes "port" though. Castlevania iv might be a more fair platforming experience but rondo of blood captures the castlevania experience better, while not being quite as unfair as the nes games. Some of the Rondo Dracula x of blood sound effects really suck though which is odd, Dracula x on snes actually had better sound effects. It's a moot point though because gran turismo 6 is the best castlevania game.
Have you ever watched the original remake by Hammer movies, where Christopher Lee is Dracula? It had a dark atmosphere, and changed the original story around, but I think Lee is superior to Bela Lugosi, except for the one line about the wolves; "Listen to them, the Children of the Night. Such sweet music they make." His Hungarian accent was awesome!!
The moment I beat Dracula in this game after hours of trying to beat him (same with grim reaper) it gave me just the greatest sense of satisfaction I've ever felt from a game. Love this game
***** Yeah, it's fucking difficult, but I never.found it shitty (still don't). It may be a bad Turtles-game (a lot of the enemies are like WTF?), but it's an awesome action-platformer that really put your skills to a test. I had it for more than a year before I beat it, but when I did it was the greatest fucking feeling I ever had (at least for the 11year old me ;) ) :D
I love Super Castlevania 4, but I think the things I dislike about it the most are: 1) an abundance of boss fights that are easy or do not require critical thinking (There are exceptions). 2) THE BUZZSAW LEVEL (Screw that!). 3) some stiffness with the controls (minuet but noticeable). 4) lack of checkpoints in suitable areas. 5) sometimes the background palettes seemed too vibrant. These are just opinions, still love the game and is actually my 2nd favorite SNES title (after Super Metroid), but had some complaints, and wanted to see if anyone agreed with me. This seemed like the appropriate forum.
They skipped on cool weapons, bosses etc. For cheap shitty enemies and ridiculous jumps and situational frustration. That is the only difficulty in this fucking game. I hate this game. Love Castlevania but... This game is driving me insane. Fuck those books in the library!
I'm sorry, but if I would've met Sir Christopher Lee when he was alive, I would've talked Tolkien with him. He was a renowned Tolkien scholar, actually personally knew Professor Tolkien, and was the only person who had the Professors permission to play a character from the books, if it was ever adapted. Tolkien wanted him to be Gandalf, but Sir Lee thought Ian McKellen was better, so he played Sauroman.
I wonder if James has ever heard of Order of Ecclesia on the DS. That one had multiple areas that you could explore outside the castle so it was Simon's Quest revamped greatly. Also if you managed to get the right path the castle emerges, being a very huge area, creating the hype of confronting Dracula.
I remember seeing a fan video of pics James had taken in England and it made me think that he probably loves it for the whole castles/monsters thing. Not forgetting the great metal heritage
For me, Super Castlevania IV will always be a remarkable game! It's not only my fav game in the series, but also one of my top-fav games of all time, period! The graphics are appealing and beautiful, the gameplay is fluid and responsive, the enemies are great, the soundtrack is fantastic (I listen to it quite often) - everything about it is just awesome! It holds up excellently, and I still play it at least a couple times every year... The ONLY negative I can think about is the framerate drops when there's too much for the console to handle on-screen at once; besides that, it's like a perfect game to me. What's also impressive is it came out during the very early days of the SNES, and it's still one of the best experiences on the console.
Such a classic. One of the earliest games for the SNES, and was better than many of the later games for the system. The playcontrol, graphics, sound, and level design were all top notch. Also, did you know the game is in stereo? The SNES component cable (yellow for video, red for right audio, white for left audio) could be hooked into a stereo system pretty easily. Those gigantic chandeliers you walk on had separate sound effects for swinging left and right; they sounded the same in mono-audio, but in stereo you'd hear them swinging side to side. Game was years ahead of its time.
This is my favorite snes game of all time, thanks for reviewing it this way, it reminds me of my childhood, beautiful old times when playing it with my brother,
i've never liked the castlevania games myself, but to watch them do them is alot of fun to me i have that with alot of games, like FF7 and 9, i do like to watch em, but they're nothing for me to play some games are too hard for me due to some brain damages, but i love to watch em on youtube, like final fight series, streets of rage, golden axe 2 and many more.... mostly platformers and beat em ups although i do like to play beat em ups, as even when i dont get through, i still can beat up people, which is the goal of those games..... to me i cant wait for part 2 :) then again, if they'd do it all in 1 week, we'd be done watching them way earlier
Sorry to hear about your damage, but it's really cool that you still like to watch beat em up and platformers. :) This is also so far my favorite Mike and James video. I'm so looking forward to part 2.
Wow, what good timing. I just recently watched your entire great Castlevania series, and I've been kind of obsessed with this game in particular as of late. I've had the mp3's of all the amazing music from this game for years, and I still rock them on a semi-regular basis:)
I remember when the first Devil May Cry game came out, I went to this local comic book shop and these guys were playing it on a monitor. It was such a bad-ass game, everyone in the store said the same thing- "This is how Castlevania 64 should've been like."
James and Mike should make and direct a Castlevania movie with a big budget because they know the games inside and out so their vision surpasses any Hollywood people
Yeah, This one is my favorite too, then Symphony of the night. Also Aria of Sorrow on GBA was pretty fun. I picked this one up at a local game shop a few years back for like 14 bucks, and I had actually never played played it before. I quickly fell in love with though. Its such a damn fine game!
It's because the British press was ALWAYS tying him to Dracula. They couldn't just call him "Christopher Lee" or "film actor Christopher Lee." They always thought they'd be cute and do some Dracula gag and he really got tired of it. The British press is really appallingly bad and they will do shit to you out of spite. If you think the U.S. press is bad, they're nothing compared to how to do over in the U.K.
Watching this again in October 2020 and it’s so cool to hear them talk about a Castlevania movie, and now we have the most awesome animated Castlevania show we could ever wish for :D
Man, I wish I still felt so passionately about games as James does about this one. I’m so old now that I can’t remember any game I loved so much. Maybe Chrono Trigger
I speedrun CV4 and can say it is one great game! It is such an in-depth skill game, more so than the other 3 classic NES castlevania's. My favorite castlevania for sure!
Super Castlevania 4 is all about fast movements and quick reflexes. The NES trilogy is all about strategic movements and well-calculated accuracy. In the end, it's up to the player about what challenge he prefers. Personally, I can manage both SCIV and the original, without much trouble.
Probably sounds odd, but I can honestly say I look forward to October because of James's Halloween horror based vids. You can tell he just really loves this stuff and it comes through well.
Or even someone as intelligent and well-versed in many topics, especially films, games, etc. He knows about so many obscure things in varying domains. Maybe he just meant he's heard of it, but didn't know _exactly_ what it was.
Probably some late 90s kids who got to play one when their older sibling(s) went to university or move out. I can picture it now: "Hmmm...SNES, eh? I guess I'll give it a try".
I feel like I'm alone in saying this, but I think CV64 should get more credit than it does. The controls are the biggest stumbling block (people get really caught off guard by the need to press and hold to climb ledges) but I honestly think it does *a lot* to give you a really cool atmosphere. The bits just outside and then in the castle really make you feel like there's a very foreboding air about the place, from the sewers to the hedge maze and so on. CV64 isn't CV4 and it isn't SOTN but I still think it's enjoyable in its own right.
Ivan orozco Glad to know there's someone else out there who loves those ones enough to keep playing. In fact, if i had my N64 still I would most likely have played them again very recently.
Yeah I recent played through castlevania 4 and Rondo back to back, rondo is just a much better game. The problem is we never got it in the us until 2009 or something. I wish I was aware of that game as a kid, I would have found some way to get an import copy lol.
***** I personally don't think that it's better than Castlevania IV. Castlevania IV's atmosphere can't be surpassed in my opinion by any other Castlevania game. You definitely should check Rondo of Blood though, it's the direct prequel of Symphony of the Night. If you don't own a PC Engine with the CD-ROM add-on and you don't speak Japanese, I recommend you to play it on PSP. The Castlevania-Dracula X Chronicles for PSP includes also Syphony of the Night and Rondo of Blood (translated) and it's much cheaper.
You really don't need to know Japanese to play Chi no Rondo. You'll miss a small bit of dialog though you can probably look up a translation easily. The menus are in English. I'm not recommending people go out and buy a Duo just for this game, but if you already have one and don't mind spending the dollars for a great game, this one won't disappoint.
James & Mike ... You all should do "Kid Chameleon" on sega genesis.. There is a shit load of levels to that game .. and when you lose a life the game literally yells "Die!" at you :P
Finally a game that I can beat with no trouble that they actually struggled somewhat with... I watch their others and am awed by the ease with which they are able to reach the end.
There comes a point at which you have to stop taking Simon Belmont seriously, and it is the point at which you find a perfectly edible pot roast in the wall.
That movie was alright. BUT, they got the wrong person to play Dracula. The new Dracula Untold reminds me a lot of Castlevania, from what I've seen of the trailers. haven't watch it yet though. Still waiting for the DVD release.
Some of the best music ever to grace the SNES. I played the heck out of this game when it came out. Good times. Thanks for the memories, J&M! Time to break out my copy! Glad I still have all my old systems & games. :)
This is a game that could have benefited from a DSP chip. Has anyone tried playing this on an overclocked SNES? I think Nintendo should offer an option on SNES virtual console games to eliminate slowdown. Much like M2 does with Metal Slug 2 on the Neo-Geo Station release. It would really make a big difference with games like this, Gradius III, Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts, where the slowdown is severe.
DSP chip would be useless. if you OC the SNES the game would run faster the higher you set the CPU, but it will still lag due to the limits on sprites per scan line. coding back then there was no real time it cpu's didnt need delta time since they were so slow. coding then was not standardized, but now they have standard game engine, and coding languages are managed.
SuperDeluxe80 Why would a DSP chip be useless in speeding up mode7 type effects? Surely if it were built from the ground up to use a DSP chip.FX chip, it would help. The FX2 chip allows large sprites to be moved very quickly in Yoshi's Island. There were attempts at overclocking the SNES, but they always resulted in gfx glitching. The Motorola 68k was successfully overclocked in both the Neo-Geo and Genesis. They definitely do improve with games such as Sonic The Hedgehog (no more slowdown when losing rings) and with Metal Slug 2 on the Neo.. it removes nearly all of the horrendous slowdown.
videogameobsession just tossing a chip into the game wont do anything they would have to reprogram the game. you cant just add a chip then magic happens. it wont happen though snes has long been dead. emulated games dont run the same as there console counterparts the timing is different. and somethings wont work the same. OC'ing a old game system in this era speeds up the game not make it run better. its like hitting fast foward. it just speeds up the game
I wasn't talking about just tossing a chip into it, which is why I said this " Surely if it were built from the ground up to use a DSP chip." I'm also not talking about emulation overclocking. I am talking about replacing the timing crystal on real hardware. My friend OC'd his Genesis and it makes a difference with many games. Same thing with the Neo-Geo.
videogameobsession i like the slow down effect i think its cool even though it is a glitch the developers knew they were pushing the limits of the console and still chose not to dull down the game to improve frame rate and it doesnt hurt the game at all it also holds a level of nostalgia for the original consoles
Ozterkvlt I didn't see the viewer comment you're responding to, but video games and tattoos are two totally different things! I don't how you lump electronic entertainment with something that many people see as a defacing of the body...
I really don't get why you two don't like Castlevania 64 at all! It's a really good transition from 2d to 3d, since it successfully maintains the atmosphere and the gameplay abilities of Castlevania; the soundtrack is a little more creepy and suspenseful, but amazing, nevertheless; the enemies in 3d and their models are really good, some of them are even new and cool (like the skeletons on the motorcycles); the game can be really frustrating at times, but after all, the difficulty is one thing Castlevania is known for (and no, it's not because the controls are clunky)! It does have some flaws, but overall it's a really good game and that's why I can't understand why guys like you two don't like it!

The British press is really appallingly bad and they will do shit to you out of spite. If you think the U.S. press is bad, they're nothing compared to how to do over in the U.K.
You can tell how much they really like the horror genre. The passion they have from just watching them play Castlevania is amazing.
one of the best episodes so far!
Great video. Can't wait for more when your schedule is less busy!
Watching this again in October 2020 and it’s so cool to hear them talk about a Castlevania movie, and now we have the most awesome animated Castlevania show we could ever wish for :D
I'd love to see you guys do a video for Symphony of the Night, that would be so badass. Probably my favorite Castlevania game ever besides IV
Who would I like to read the crawl? Vincent Price! No one else is more perfect.
He's been ever so slightly dead for 11 years.
qawamity
I thought it was one of those dead or alive things...
Alice Cooper or Ian McKelken
Man, I wish I still felt so passionately about games as James does about this one. I’m so old now that I can’t remember any game I loved so much. Maybe Chrono Trigger
One of my most favorite video game soundtracks of all time.
Hey James your a filmmaker why don't you make a Castlevania movie?
Probably sounds odd, but I can honestly say I look forward to October because of James's Halloween horror based vids. You can tell he just really loves this stuff and it comes through well.
Listening to you guys nerd out is weirdly hypnotic.
Man im glad this is still up im stuck at a part
This was filmed right before mike left for the 8th grade Halloween dance.
I have no idea how a gamer would not know what a harpy is
Or even someone as intelligent and well-versed in many topics, especially films, games, etc. He knows about so many obscure things in varying domains. Maybe he just meant he's heard of it, but didn't know _exactly_ what it was.
It's almost like harpies aren't in every fucking movie or game
@@mikeisapro He must have never seen Jason and the Argonauts.
I just heard this part and thought the same exact thing
Well, now there's a Castlevania series on Netflix. How times have changed!
Is it worth a watch?
@@hotcoffeebreath absolutely
Simon Belmont cracks that whip at his enemies. They're mostly dead already!
Christopher Lee doing the voice over for the intro to this game? That is just GENIUS. Hell yeah :D
Im from Europe, never ever heared somebody saying SNES, only Super Nintendo.
I think calling it SNES started with the upcoming of the Internet.
Probably some late 90s kids who got to play one when their older sibling(s) went to university or move out. I can picture it now: "Hmmm...SNES, eh? I guess I'll give it a try".
R.I.P Christopher Lee
kinda surprised James doesnt know what a harpy is, is he obsessed with monsters and horror and that sort of thing?
@@gurvmlk - I for one would have no idea what a harpy was, if I hadn't played Heroes IV.
@@VelkanAngels Same here, learned more about Harpies from playing Serious Sam.
Amazing video-super fun! Castlevania IV brings me good memories ..I can't wait to play it on the snes mini and enjoy it again. Legendary soundtrack
Super Castlevania IV and Contra III Alien Wars are my 2 all-time fav super nintendo games.
Sam Mitman alien wars so hard
I feel like I'm alone in saying this, but I think CV64 should get more credit than it does. The controls are the biggest stumbling block (people get really caught off guard by the need to press and hold to climb ledges) but I honestly think it does *a lot* to give you a really cool atmosphere. The bits just outside and then in the castle really make you feel like there's a very foreboding air about the place, from the sewers to the hedge maze and so on.
CV64 isn't CV4 and it isn't SOTN but I still think it's enjoyable in its own right.
i agree
Well said. I too, like those ones. Enough to the point where I have played them several times in one day on several occasions.
same here
Ivan orozco Glad to know there's someone else out there who loves those ones enough to keep playing. In fact, if i had my N64 still I would most likely have played them again very recently.
Legacy of Darkness was the better version of the game, though.
Mike just get back from church?
LOL!
He decided to dress up for work.
i like his hair .. variation is good
Gurpreet Chaggar shop smart shop E smart
When did he say that?
I would love for the old Castlevania games to be re-released with graphical updates. But then I remembered the state of Konami now. :(
chuckobscure
I would love to, but I don't have a Wii or Wii U.
chuckobscure
They must have. It was those early years of Wii. :(
chuckobscure
No problem. Hopefully Nintendo would make it available for WiiU in the future. That would be awesome. :)
+chuckobscure The license that Ubisoft had for TMNT expired, so they had to stop selling it :(
It's that kind of attitude that keeps ruining movie and game franchises. They look perfectly fine how they are.
James and mike Mondays is my favourite youtube series right now!
Keep up the good work James and Mike! I really enjoy your work!
I love the game, but Rondo of Blood (PC Engine) is even more epic!
Yeah I recent played through castlevania 4 and Rondo back to back, rondo is just a much better game. The problem is we never got it in the us until 2009 or something. I wish I was aware of that game as a kid, I would have found some way to get an import copy lol.
It is perhaps the crown gem of my game collection.
***** Agreed, but it's nice to understand what they saying during the cutscenes.
"I've never heard of harpies"
I don't believe you.
James & Mike ... You all should do "Kid Chameleon" on sega genesis.. There is a shit load of levels to that game .. and when you lose a life the game literally yells "Die!" at you :P
Ahh the oh so sweet clacking sound of the Snes controllers, and this game has held up visually pretty well after so many years.
Finally a game that I can beat with no trouble that they actually struggled somewhat with... I watch their others and am awed by the ease with which they are able to reach the end.
Please play a Metroid game for James & Mike Mondays!!
Portrait of Ruin is still my favourite Castlevania.
Agreed!
The Hugh Jackman Van Helsing movie basically WAS Castlevania the Movie.
Except it was campy as heck!
I thought he did OK, actually. Not easy shoes to try and fill.
TheTurnipKing Yeah, but for a big-budget picture, they need to try harder. Much, MUCH harder.
Some of the best music ever to grace the SNES. I played the heck out of this game when it came out. Good times. Thanks for the memories, J&M! Time to break out my copy! Glad I still have all my old systems & games. :)
My fav game of all time. This is real Castlevania. Is all about the Belmonts Vs Dracula.
James doesn't know what a Harpy is? WTF?
How in the world is that possible. O.o
I mean, he's played Symphony of the Night which I'm damn sure CALLS THEM Harpies, how the hell did he not know that? XD
I thought you were dead?
he needs to go play god of war.
***** exactly,i've known since like i was in elementary school, middle school at the latest
They definitely do improve with games such as Sonic The Hedgehog (no more slowdown when losing rings) and with Metal Slug 2 on the Neo.. it removes nearly all of the horrendous slowdown.
videogameobsession
just tossing a chip into the game wont do anything they would have to reprogram the game. you cant just add a chip then magic happens. it wont happen though snes has long been dead.
emulated games dont run the same as there console counterparts the timing is different. and somethings wont work the same.
OC'ing a old game system in this era speeds up the game not make it run better. its like hitting fast foward. it just speeds up the game
I wasn't talking about just tossing a chip into it, which is why I said this " Surely if it were built from the ground up to use a DSP chip."
I'm also not talking about emulation overclocking.
You don't know what a harpie is, James? o.O Now you gotta tattoo one on the other arm ^-^ You'll never forget
Tattoos are gross.
miniboss30 People tattoo whatever they want, stupid or not, deal with it, kid...
bleh
Archdevilneverfails Baggins Gross? Are you 5? What about yakuza tattoos, full body japanese artwork. You like video games but not art like that?
Ozterkvlt I didn't see the viewer comment you're responding to, but video games and tattoos are two totally different things! I don't how you lump electronic entertainment with something that many people see as a defacing of the body...
This game was ahead of it's time.
Thanks to James, This is one of my favorite Castlevania games too.
One of my favorite N64 games!
