- Ghosts N' Goblins is regarded as one of the more difficult games in the NES library. Ghosts N' Goblins allows the player to control a knight on a perilous journey to rescue the princess, battling zombies, ghouls and demons on the way. Follow the Nerd in this episode as he sacrifices his sanity to save the princess and to be able to say, "I beat Ghosts N' Goblins"!

Anybody else watch 3 or 4 episodes as they're falling asleep at night? There's something kind of tranquil about James yelling at a 30 year old game.

The hard way? The fact that you reached the last level means you had a ton of hard time already, so failing one extra time to learn about the shield doesn't make the experience any worse than it already is. :D

I mean the word uni (one) corn as in the roll of the horn (partially where corncob got its name I bet)
And what are the sources for this "fun fact"? Because I can't find anything confirming that the word unicorn was used this way. And the horse-like unicorn myth is over a thousand years old referenced in biblical texts.

I still come back every year to watch this gem.
My dad told me that when he was a kid he took ages to beat this game and when he finally beat it and saw the screen telling you to restart he just took the cartridge outside and threw it up into the air and watched it shatter on the pavement

Im suprised this game was actually able to be compressed . They were known for overly compressing game and considering how long the levels lasted it was pretty well done
Ghosts n Goblins actually came out in the US in arcades before Super Mario Brothers did, so it got a lot of things right (such as having secrets, varied level settings, a sense of progress, and an end goal) seeing that it’s one of the earliest modern sidescrollers.
11:08 I cant speak for the NES version, but it's no prank in the arcade version. I remember playing that version and I made it to the final boss without the shield and the game was like "NOPE!" and it sent me back to level 5.

Damn, the Nerd is totally right. This game is absolutely Mega Man mixed with Castlevania.
In design, yes. In terms of difficulty, not really. I find ghosts and goblins harder than castlevania 1. Castlevania doesn't get insanely difficult until the 2nd half. Ghosts is goblins is hard as crap starting at level 1. Also castlevania has a health bar. With ghosts and goblins you get 2 hits and you die.
Castlevania I also has Holy Water. It makes the game much easier, because it stuns enemies.
I think 3 is much harder than gng

@@dooplon5083 I've played it many of times and it is not that hard. I did use to watch my father play it when I was younger though. I love Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts more than Ghosts 'N Goblins.
I got the knife and beat the game. Thank you James! Although on last level you don't really have to farm it. Just use the javelin and then the shield and you're fine.

If anyone is wondering, if you don't get the shield, you can't fight the final boss, when you beat both Satans, you get a screen that says "THIS WEAPON HAS NOT EFFECT... TRY AGAIN !! GET A (shield)" and sends you back to level 5

Apparently the Shied myth is true, but in the Japanese version, the shield is a cross. It makes a little more sense as to why it's needed now.

After being able to play the "Ghosts 'N Goblins" series again recently for Halloween, here is the best strategy for playing through each game that I've played thanks to James:
Ghosts 'N Goblins = Get the knife
Ghouls 'N Ghosts = Get the knife
Super Ghouls 'N Ghosts = Get the crossbow
The crossbow and the dagger in Super G n' G are the best, hands down. Anything else is suicide.

ThisIsLotso I, too received my NES 30 years ago. Christmas of 1988, so in two days, it will be exactly 30 years ago! And this year, I asked for the NES Classic Edition (which, coincidentally, includes Ghosts and Goblins), so it will be quite fitting if I receive it.
