This song is about James's childhood and being raised in a super religious household. You need to check out #2 and #3 as well to finish out the story
Another great (but sadly underrated) track about James' religious household is "The Cure"
@@Tommy-he7dxDamn I always sleep on ‘The Cure’ now I’m going to listen to it right now.
@@kingklash666 a bit more angrier, that one.
I hope he does watch them. 2 and 3 are tied for my favorite Metallica song.
No it's not , it's about not being able to forgive one's self and letting the past define your identity.
The God that Failed is about James Childhood in a Christian Science Household and watching his Mother die of Cancer as she wouldn't seek treatment due to her Religion.
Same with Dyers Eve, but the Unforgiven Trilogy is the story of one's inability to attain forgiveness in themselves and number 2 is finding another who's is Unforgiven also and number 3 is going life alone still on that search .
You need to hear all three parts! 🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽
Absolutely
Absolutely then needs to place them together and analyze all 3 the whole story
It's crazy that initiallyJames didn't even want to be the singer but he did it and he is one of the most vocally animated singers. You can feel his words.
He’s the Front Man of all time. Other Front Men have to speak full sentences to the crowd to rile them up : “Are you ready?!?!” James Hetfield only has to say one word: “YEAH!”
Please more Metallica. Their music is so great
metallica S&M live is perfect
The entire Black Alblum is a must listen.
Four words; Much more Metallica, please 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Couldnt click this fast enough. I really REALLY hope you also do Unforgiven 2 and 3. The throughline in lyrics and themes is absolutely fantastic imo.
I’ve been watching you for almost a year now, and I’m continuously fascinated by how quickly you grasp the meaning of lyrics!!!
It's amazing, isn't it? For me, it can take from a few minutes to a few months to fully grasp what a song is about. (But maybe I'm also a bit of a perfectionist.)
Same!
Yes! He's so quick on so many levels. Musically, lyrically, and emotionally. So good.
So quick, that perhaps it’s not his first time…..
@@robert103515 Not on all older songs, no. He's already told us that he has heard some of these before, but it's either been years or he's never paid attention to the lyrics or seen the video, etc.
This song ain't that hard to get, though. Thrash metal and heavy metal (the subgenre) in general, not that complex on the lyric department. (Simple doesn't equal bad, btw. I think it's good the world has both.)
Man, you never cease to amaze me on how quickly and accurately you figure out the meaning of lyrics. As many others have said you should do parts 2 & 3 now. 🤘🏻🖤
Knox, ya nailed it by the end of the first chorus. The constraints were religion. James had a very strict upbringing.
When heavy metal makes a ballad and nails it 1000%
Hell yes Knox! I've missed Metal Mondays!
The pop and K Pop definitely isn't my thing.
One of my favorite songs by Metallica, glad to see a Knox breakdown🤙Stay safe my man
It would be a blessing if you were to react to other 2 parts of Unforgiven, because of your fenomenal ability to understand the lyrics and because those other 2 parts have a great story that continues onto this song.Cheers bro, best of wishes to you!
Welllllll fuck. Ive loved this song since I was 14.... It took a Knox reaction and breakdown for me to understand exactly why it resonates so much. Damn knox you let me understand a song i didnt understand properly for 26 years
Loved this song since it came out ✌️🫶 luv ya Professor
Thank you Knox for that breakdown…. As a Metallica fan I heard this song for thousands of times , but You have successfully pulled tears from my eyes for the third time in my life..
The first was in 1991 in my hometown in Saudia Arabia, I was 18 , the song hit me so hard I thought I was singing with tears, living the song 🥲 Metallica fanboy ever since.
The second time was 2 weeks ago in the First Metallica concert in Riyadh , Saudia Arabia @50 years old.
I was head banging for an hour , then this came on , I froze and stared with tears running down my face in the middle of 10k people , my daughter (17y) next to me stopped grooving , and shouted “what’s wrong daddy?!”
I smiled at her and shouted “ everything is Right! ,, I will explain later!“
… I never did , I never could… until I saw this video. So thank you.
This epic concert is on TH-cam, it shows how much we as a culture is evolving, might be worth a reaction.
Forever a Knox Sub

Riyadh ,Saudi Arabia
I'm confused by these comments. I'm versed in sarcasm but I'm confused .
Your adorable. I gotta mute you and react by your facial expression
Music is such a great vessel to explore these complicated feelings of anger, resentment, injustice, loss, rejection, isolation etc.
now to do the other two parts as this is a trilogy (unforgiven, unforgiven 2, unforgiven 3)
This was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid. And I didn’t understand a word back then.
And later I never really thought about the lyrics. But now I realize how beautiful and profound they are. ❤
Thank you for dissecting this song! 😊
This is and has been for over 30 years now, my favorite song of all time! 🤘🤘🤘
Trilogy for sure Knox! Great Reaction!🤟🔥
Unforgiven is a trilogy, you need to do Unforgiven II and Unforgiven III
The rhythm section underneath that lead gets me every time so powerful!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻
This was the first song heard at 1991 from Metallica, I knew they exists before but some reason I didn’t hear them before but after I heard this song they caught me forever.
NEW BLOOD JOINS THIS EARTH! Great opening line! So much power
Ain't gonna lie I love that you disect the meaning of the lyrics, music and the video. You did the same with Avenged sevenfold, Nightmare. Hit the nail on the head!
Great reaction, you really got the philosophical aspects of this great song.
No matter what you do, no matter how much you sacrifice give or whatever no one’s gonna like you because of one person
now need to do unforgiven 2 and unforgiven 3
You should do Disposable Heroes! You're good at picking apart song lyrics so this would be great!
Hell yeah
Unforgiven II is a masterpiece as well.
Need to listen to The Unforgiven 2 and 3 now to though, they all kinda tie into each other... but this one is prolly my favorite out of all of them.
Think I like unforgiven II a tiny bit more! But classic! 🤘
I really hope you do the other unforgiven tracks 🙏 The unforgiven 2 is one of my all time favourites. Great reaction as always Knox ❤
Really? Unforgiven III is my favorite -.
He should definitely give 2 a listen that's my favorite
@@Thechaosmaster1997They're all awesome but 2 holds a special place in my heart ❤
@@bethgentle6755 Couldn't agree more.
I like all three parts, but the third is my personal favourite because I connect with its lyrics the most. I am the main architect of my own misery, there’s no one else to blame, but me myself and the world itself.
you need to listen to Unforgiven 2 and 3 they are all part of one story over the years of them playing
Listen to Dyer's Eve. Nuff said.
He not ready for that
Dude i so love metal mondays 🤟🤘🤟🤘🤟🤘
Need Part 2 & 3 soon also.
This takes me back ... the sound of my youth!
One of my favorite guitar solos.
This song has 3 parts, part 2 is my favorite of the and was unironically my lullaby growing up. All I listened to as a kid was Metallica thanks to my dad. 😂🖤
Metallica also does an awesome job singing through their instruments. Kirk does a great job of melodically coming in with the pre solo than building up and up with the main solo. You can feel the emotions through the guitar work. One of the many things i love about this band.
I was born in 1977 and will never NOT jam to some Metallica!! 🤘🏻
Me to ✌️
@@agnespatmeneghetti4262 We were only babies in the 70s, but we’re from a generation of the greatest music! Of course I’m a little biased, but how can it not be the best? Lol.
Great reaction. I so love Metallica. I've been lucky to see them 5 times in Toronto. They are so incredible live it's ridiculous❤ Much love from Canada Knox❤🇨🇦
I was only lucky to see them live once. Way back in 1987. I'll never forget it. Me and my brother were allowed to go. We were up close too. It was just the most awesome experience 😎
Metallica eye of the beholder you should also check out unforgiven 2 and 3 great songs
2 and 3 are good too. This was the best of the 3 though. One of my favorites.
Even better with S&M, in my opinion
Unforgiven 1-society
Unforgiven 2-Lover
Unforgiven 3- Self
Gotta hear the breakdown for Unforgiven II & III
Do the 2nd and 3rd part dont keep me waiting!!!
You really nailed it at the end with the religious imagery. James Hetfield's mother was a Christian Scientist. She didn't believe in science or medicine of any kind. And there's a really awful end to that as James' mother came down with cancer when he was a boy. But her beliefs were so strong that she never sought treatment. No chemo or anything. James essentially just watched his mother voluntarily wither away and die. James' upbringing really influenced a lot of his writing. You'll find several song in Metallica's catalog about a childhood gone really terribly.
Every time I hear this song, it just reminds me of growing up with my mom and my grandparents. Even still, they dedicate their lives to (trying to) running all of mine.
I really need to see Knox do some Pantera and Slayer
Having watched Part I, you are now obliged to watch Parts II and III. Wait until you hear the contrast between II and III. Really unexpected switch between those songs.
There is a second and third Unforgiven song as well. You should check out some of their stuff with the orchestra. Song are live but honestly it really is an amazing mix.
You should do Sad But True by Metallica, great song with a great message. Would love to see your breakdown.
definately nailed the first rule of the guitar solo...the second is that if you do happen to accidentally or purposely stop it, thou shalt return to the beginning of it.
I also highly recommend their version of Whiskey in a Jar. It’s a fun listen!
First video I see from you, really enjoyed it.
The unforgiven was the first Metallica song that I truly loved, I was only like 10yo when my older brother got the cassette, and I remember I kept asking him to rewind the cassette so that I could hear the song once again.
English isn't my native language, so at that time I could not pronounce "unforgiven" so I only told him "put the one that isn't 2" 2 meaning unforgiven II.
Knox your reactions are so good man! The way you break things down so well and makes me think about things from a different perspective is what keeps me coming back!
Nailed it as always mate. It's about James and his childhood in an ultra religious upbringing and wanting to break free
love Your reactions cause you also analyse the songs so well. Looking forward to the next metal reaction :P
Need to do all three
Really hope you’re going to do Unforgiven 2 then Unforgiven 3.
This is one of my absolute favourite Metallica songs. Thanks for reacting to this! Definitely need to check out the other parts ❤❤
James Hetfield is from Downey California. My uncle and James went to the same high school. James graduated a year before my uncle around 1978 I think from a different high school.
Thank you for not interrupting the guitar solo !!!
Now it's time for #2 and #3. You will get the entire picture. Such a powerful set of songs about growing up repressed by parents who went off the deep end in religion.
Love your break downs this was 🔥
Oh yey, Metal Mondays! A good reason to get up this morning!
You have to do Unforgiven II and Unforgiven III at some point, they continue the story of the same character (and finish it).
Just a random FYI: Metalheads tend to assign each subgenre The Big Four - four bands that sort of "define" the subgenre, that are the GOATs that other bands take influence from. And, like, if you've heard something from all four, then you have a pretty good grasp on what that subgenre sounds like as a whole. We do debate on who qualifies for each Big Four, though, it's not always clear cut.
Much love and appreciation Knox from Kentucky ❤️🙏❤️ Merry Christmas fam 🎄
Definitely check out at least unforgiven II
The unforgiven 2 was my first "metal" song as a kid, from that point on I traded my Wu Tang and Eminem tracksuits for long hair and jeans
Yes Sir
Love watching Knox discover Metallica. He has a lot of good insight into the lyrics and videos
The unforgiven part 2 and 3.
Love this song! Also there is an unforgiven II as well. ❤your reactions my guy. Would love to see you get into some Ice Nine Kills soon! Keep up the good work!
I really hope you do Unforgiven II and III.
Unforgiven part 2 please 😊😊😊!!
Great reaction. You nailed the meaning I think. I hope you will do Unforgiven 2 and 3 soon as well. :)
Please Please Please do part 2 and 3 of this. You will appreciate it
Pleeze check out Unforgiven 2 it's amazing plus the hook and beat is flames, it has a hip hop feel too.
I always say that 80's Rock/Metal has awesome Lyrics, kinda like Rap. I think what Rappers and Metal-heads have in common is an affinity for music that tells a story. Anyway, awesome reaction .... Insta-Sub!
Unforgiven 2 and 3 are a must now!
you would really like No Leaf Clover by Metallica. its one many dont mention but a masterpiece none the less
This is why i love metal there is meaning in all the songs
Yea keep doing Metallica and if you wanna see a wild concert look at the one in Moscow It’s insane
React to The Unforgiven II and III, these are the Sequels to this.
Thank you 🙏❤ Knox Hill ❤ for the Unforgiven reaction! #metallica #unforgiven
i think Metallica - Fade to Black is a very good Song for your reaction... its a nice Song with great lyrics to help to figure out with depression and suicide...
Need to do #2 and #3 ASAP after this
Great reaction Knox.
Love your reactions. Keep it up!
Beautiful take on this song, my favorite song actually so to see this reaction is awesome!
Also your energy is awesome brother!
Yeeeeeesssss
you should check out the unforgiven 2 &3
Now time for the two others to complete the trilogy. The Unforgiven 2 and Unforgiven 3
You can come full circle with this
You did such a great job of breaking down the songs meaning! I love The Black Album its a 💯
Mettalica liricism its not to the fainted heart......behind that fucking awesome drums and guittar riff's theres always a message.....
You need to react to "For Whom the Bell Tolls" easily my favorite Metallica song
