Playing devil's advocate here. Would this still be your opinion if you were struck down with Polio and had to live your life in an iron lung where you could still learn, communicate, teach and have a positive input into society? Look at Stephen Hawking. Sure, machines weren't keeping him alive in a traditional sense, but without his devices to communicate, we may never have heard from one of the most inquisitive and fascinating minds of the last 200 years

One is based on the 1939 novel called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a WWI soldier that lost his arms, legs, most of his face, sight, hearing, and ability to speak to an artillery shell. He's a prisoner in his own body, which is why he's begging for them to kill him by banging his head against the pillow in morse code. The movie clips in this music video are scenes from the 1971 film adaptation of Johnny Got His Gun.

    • @MarkMay-cr6bv
      @MarkMay-cr6bv 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

He didn't just lose his appendages and face, he can't hear, see or speak. It's like a mind trapped all alone in a dark, silent, immobile void, hence the term "One."

    • @Nightbreed82
      @Nightbreed82 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@@MarkMay-cr6bv Yes, I implied that by saying he lost most of his face and when I said he used morse code to communicate. I guess he banged his head against the pillow in morse code, didn't blink, my bad (had to look that up to refresh my bad memory). Also, the blind, deaf, and mute part is in the lyrics. Edited my post to clarify.

One is epic, one of my favorite Metallica anti-war songs. Disposable Heroes is another. I hate war, but support troops/veterans big time. I like the line Hetfield said in the song Don't Tread On Me, "to secure peace is to prepare for war". Key word being prepare...and pray you never have to actually go to war. And of course, like Black Sabbath's War Pigs points out, corrupt, cowardly politicians send innocent people to die, like pawns in chess.

Funny thing about these anti-war movies made by communists is that communists themselves have no qualms about killing for their ideology and yet all the communist influenced media of the 60-s and 70-s is aimed a discouraging Americans fighting to defend democracy. And the so called rebels of the 80-s and 90-s followed in their step. Rebelling against socety that made their art possible in the first place. Never occurred to them to reflect on why there's no metalica in soviet union or communist china.

"Each man faces death by himself, alone." Very profound truth. I work in a hospital myself. Even if a person is surrounded by people, death is an individual thing. Coming to grips with it is a difficulty many never think about.

At the beginning, you hear the doctor claim that Joe (the patient) was decerebrated, and therefore could not think or feel... followed by "Had I not been so sure of that, I would not have permitted him to live". Once he started communicating, the military brass refused to let him die, hence the nurse actually attempting the mercyful act, and the "general" walking in and kicking her out.

  • @neilpatrickhairless
    @neilpatrickhairless 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

The nurse at the end who tries to help him pass away is the New Age Nurse, a younger nurse in the actual story this song is based on. She works with the older nurses who are less compassionate and more "by the book" - the New Age Nurse is the first person who is able to communicate with Joe (the main character) after he is injured and he forms a bond with her, specifically. The "Freak Show" scene comes from a request to the Army to put his body in a glass casket and have it carted around as a sideshow attraction. Joe also comes from a Christian Science family - something he shares in common with James Hetfield of Metallica. Followers of Christian Science believe that there is no body to heal, no material person, no illness, that everything regarded to health and sickness and mortality in general are metaphysical processes.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

So, it is literally against Joe's family's religious beliefs to be keeping him alive in the first place. And against the beliefs of "Padre", the chaplain for him to be in the state he is in also, hence the snarky remark the Army brass

Hetfield was raised in that church, but i believe he walked away from it when he lost both parents in his teens. I forget the exact story, but I believe he was mad at the church for the beliefs that let his parents just die and leave him alone. It's been decades since I heard the story, so I'm a little foggy on it.

  •  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Seen 100's of reactions to this video, many speak of the horrors of war, and how they interpret this song as an anti-war song. You are the very first one (no pun intended) to actually see it is more than that, and speaks on the level of a right to die. Being kept alive for the sake of a doctors oath of "do no harm" or the government involvement prohibiting a right to die is something that is relevant in our world. There are situations where quality of life matters over everything else. I don't know of anyone that has had a level of injury that would constitute such a decision, but i know it exists. An excellent interpretation of a master piece, you got me as a subscriber. Keep them reactions coming. ❤ Movie is "Johnny Got His Gun"

He mentioned it to someone in the industry who told him there was a movie about exactly that, Johnny Got His Gun. Instead of watching the movie, James read the book it was based on by Dalton Trumbo. Lyrics from Musixmatch
    Lyrics of One by Metallica
    verse
    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me
    verse
Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now
    chorus
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
    verse
Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live
    verse
Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me
    chorus
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, wake me
    verse
Now the world is gone, I'm just one
    Oh God help me
    chorus
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please God, help me
    verse
    Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    verse
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell
    verse
    Landmine has taken my sight
    verse
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul

This video was released in 1989 and it was Metallica's first music video from their 4th album 'And justice for all' in 1988... the band would not film a music video if MTV would not play it. But in 1988, Metallica was conquering the stages on the 'Monsters of rock' tour - Van Halen was headlining and Metallica was obliterating every band on the bill, so MTV knew that they were going to be huge as 'And justice for all' was released and sold platinum in the US (1 million copies) faster than the previous Metallica album 'Master of Puppets'... Finally, Metallica opted to film a low budget video w/ MTV committing to air the video, which was a dark & heavy clip (w/ clips from the movie that inspired the song 'One'... "Johnny got his gun") and it made a huge impact - 'And justice for all' sold 2x platinum and Metallica launched their first headlining arena tour in '89 dubbed 'Damaged justice'... ('And justice for all' has sold 8x platinum to date in the US)
The album 'And justice for all' was an angry and intense Metallica record... and it came out very unique... The songs were longer and demanding musically, and were written and recorded after the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed in a tour bus accident in 1986... The accident traumatized Metallica's surviving members - James Hetfield (vocals/ guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums) and Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) and they drank heavily in the aftermath to cope...
Jason Newsted (bass) was recruited in '86 to finish the tour but the 'new guy' was subjected to years of hazing by Metallica's members and crew ... Making matters worse, drummer Lars Ulrich decided to fade out Newsted's bass tracks from the 4th album to make his drums more audible. Of course, Newsted heard the final mixes of 'And justice for all'... and was livid... but stayed in Metallica until 2001.
In addition to the aggressive music, James Hetfield's lyrics on 'And justice for all' ... were brutal and spewed themes of anger, hopelessness & the end of everything; Hetfield saw his friend and bandmate die in front of him at age 24, and it added to his despair - he had lost his mom to cancer when he was a teen, so Burton's death was yet another trauma he had to endure ... He even let his parents have it on the album's closing track 'Dyers eve'... 'One' was about a dire situation of a soldier in World War I losing his limbs and senses but kept alive w/ machines as he wishes for death.

Thank you for your nuanced discussion.
The current attempts to widely broaden this right in parts of the West should be viewed with some suspicion, unfortunately.
    Wishing you all the best.

I lot of people miss the story due to the music or vice versa. The movie this is based on is set in ww1 so 1917ish, and it's even harder to watch than this. It is available on youtube if you search for "Johnny got his gun". i warn you now, it's tough.
despite it being a grim topic, did you like the track though?

Such a good song and the video is from an older movie. Also I have to admit that I always have to watch your videos twice because the first time I'm pretty distracted because bombshell LOL. So what is your favourite genre of music? Can you react to Steve Earle - Copper Head Road? you'd like it I'm sure.

I love what you said about, it seeming like people should have the right to choose, but at the same time, it feels wrong to not leave it to God's timing. That's exactly the way I feel about it. It is a dilemma. This is the reason I'm opposed to euthenasia, but at the same time, if someone was hopelessly trapped in a car and in the process of burning to death, and I had a gun in my hand, would it be a sin to put them out of their misery? I'm not sure.

There’s no shortage of ‘reaction’ channels on TH-cam, but I’m finding Maddy’s work remarkably engaging.
It’s probably especially interesting to see what someone makes of works that are both before her time and not in the top tier of fame (but critically noteworthy), and also not clearly in what she knows is her groove.

I personally believe that keeping someone alive artificially with things like "life" support is just mankind playing "God" because without that, the person would not still be alive, which some would consider to be "Gods will.." And I would also argue that keeping someone "alive" in such a way is a kin to cruel and unusual punishment or torture.. Especially in circumstances like this where the person has complete cognitive function and awareness! It would be like being in purgatory, like a straight jacket for your mind! And to me, that would be a fate far worse than death...

Shit I've had sleep paralysis happen to me a couple of times, and that's some terrifying shit that you eventually snap out of.. Well, hopefully, anyway.. So that would be my absolute worst nightmare! Like trying to yell or scream in a dream only to be met with silence...

I presume that your father was just a G.I. working to push back the North Korean invasion.
There were however also a lot of atrocities, and the South Korean authoritarian regime of military dictatorship that followed was certainly no boon to freedom, rights and democracy in the USA.

I think your very cerebral and having a prior career in medicine/PT of some sort makes the music component of the song take a back seat to no fault of your own. Great fireside and hard for one person to solution everyone will agree on. Be in this cycle for over 2024+ years
