He's not in a coma, he is 100% sentient. Not of his body or his environment, but sentient of the fact that he has been completely mutilated and faced with the horrible realization that he can't communicate. He is in constant pain. That's how he knows he is alive. The visions of his father and the various conversations he has with him are a mixture of stepping in and out of consciousness. "Can't tell if this is true or dream. - nothing is real but pain, now"
In the book he was inculcated the idea of War as a glorious fight between good and evil. For the sake of democracy and patriotism. But now, war has left him with a permanent reminder that, besides the results of it, It will leave nothing but marked minds and bodies. War attracts young men and women with the promise of glory. But leaves them as permanent soldiers. Just like his situation. He is surrounded by people that believe themselves honorable arguing about what is best for him. While he begs for death with a voice that they can't hear. That is War. People killing each other in the name of other people that think they know what is best for them. And when they can finally understand him because of Morse code, when he begs for death, they disregard his opinion as immoral. They turn the lights off and walk away from the room, washing their hands. To repeat the same process over and over again.

I’m not talking about redoing parts. I’m just talking about re-mixing it. Add some EQ... That’s always been my only problem with this song. It could be so much heavier, if it didn’t sound like it was being performed through to tin cans, connected by a string.

the video shows footage of a young soldier who has been wounded in battle, he's blind, can not speak, has no arms/legs, but fully awake, just unable to respond. the lyrics are of what may be his thoughts as he lays there a prisoner trapped inside his own body, completely dependent on others to live.

First time watching you guys but that intro is purely wholesome. “We react to music from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s”. And you were born in the mid to late 2000’s I’m guessing? That’s rare that you see younger people nowadays actually actively seeking out music from that long ago, especially young kids, and especially a girl as well lol. Your parents must be real proud of you two that you aren’t stuck in the mainstream music of the 2000’s to current and that you have not only a broad musical appreciation, but that you actually go out on your own to seek that music out and that it’s not just “oh I heard this song on the radio or in a movie and it happened to be from the 70’s” or something like that. Awesome to see

The book Johnny Got His Gun is even weirder yet. Neither is really mainstream. The book uses alot of weirdly written sentence structures and metaphors and double meanings everywhere. The movie is played more surrealist and has a interesting design choice with most scenes in black and white, and color was used for scenes that were flashbacks or dream sequences. A good juxtaposition of the bright colorfulness of life and the dark dismal horror of a hellish existence being trapped in a state that you can't understand or really cope with, or escape from for that matter.

This is a great reaction video you guys, clicked on it as soon as i saw it! One of my all time and the very first Metal song i ever heard, it's kinda of a paradox because y'all had the exact same reaction that i did when i first saw them on TV, and that was when they performed One on the 1989 Grammy Awards, i was around your ages, 12 years old and didn't know anything about Metallica except all the High School kids were wearing their ".. And Justice For All" shirts, almost everybody was wearing that shirt, the same one that the drummer Lars is wearing in that video! and the bass player Jason's wearing a Cap'n Crunch shirt and screaming his head off in some parts! was watching the Grammys that years and they announced Metallica was going to play next, i watched them play that song live on TV, was totally shocked and from that point on since then became a Metallica fan! i suggest you check that out, Metallica One 1989 Grammy Awards on you tube, Definitely worth checking out, It's cool too when you watch it because they were performing it in front of all the big celebrity musicians and actors, and you get a real reaction from the Singer/Guitarist James Hetfield, he was very nervous at first, but by that heavy scary part, they OWNED that stage and they were on fire!!! however, i always had mixed feelings about that music video, yeah it's cool that it was their first one, the scenes match the song well but they probably should've scaled back on some of that dialogue, a little too much and kinda takes away from the song, that's at least how i feel about it, but It's really cool kids your age checking and reacting to this music, seeing what it was really about back then, hard to believe it's been over 30 years since this came out, they still perform that song awesome now, finally saw them in 2009, that song still gets a huge reaction from the fans!, great reaction video kids🤘👍👌, and like your Dad in the background, i was headbanging too, he was really going nuts back there😂👍, can't help it,It's a classic killer badass masterpiece!!

The movie embedded in the video is called Johnny Got His Gun. It was partially the inspiration for the song. Hetfield and Ulrich wrote it as an anti-war song but Ulrich saw the movie and realized the movie was similar in the narrative they wanted to get out and thus they incorporated the movie into the video. You'll notice that everything that happened to Johnny is what they sing about:
    "Darkness imprisoning me,
    all that I see,
    absolute horror,
    I can not live,
    I can not die,
    trapped in myself,
    Body my holding cell.
    Landmine
    has taken my sight,
    taken my speech,
    taken my hearing,
    taken my arms,
    taken my legs,
    taken my soul,
left me with life in hell.
Those lyrics are exactly describing Johnny in the movie. That's why the face mask. He essentially has no face to speak of and not only is it antiseptic for him it's also for others so they don't have to see him.

There’s a reason why you can barely hear the bass, and it is the same reason why you can hear so much of the battery. It has to do with Metallica’s history and the death of their previous bassist (Cliff Burton). Jason Newsted as the new member of the band was not that well received by Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield for a while (They kinda bullied him and not gave him his props, but they eventually changed their attitude towards him). Particularly in this album, Lars wanted his battery to sound in a very particular way and in order to do so, they had to “sacrifice” the bass lines. “And justice for all” was recorded like that on purpose. Keep the reactions guys!!! You rock 🎸🤟

I remember when this video came out. Metalica were growing way bigger than anyone thought possible and they always held the oppinion that music videos were trivial and beneath them. So there was all this pressure to do something BIG and this is what they did. This was how they announced themselves to the wold at large. The song and video are works of art and I still got chills during your reaction! You got it right, BTW, he suffered an injury during war and left in a coma-like state where he couldn’t move his limbs or speak. I saw your hearts sink when you figured it out. 2 Minutes To Midnight, it’s actually fairly underrated, the musicianship on that song is as close to perfect as it gets. Steve’s bass track on 2MTM is possibly one of his best, along with Nicko’s drumming, Dave and Adrian’s guitar work and Bruce’s vocals, it’s easily one of the best in terms of musicianship. It’s certainly more than just Adrian’s simple yet awesome main riff.
I think they would enjoy the changes through the song too, from the main riff to the half-time pre-chorus, in to the chorus and then the soloing. And Claire will definitely be able to hear the bass!

Should've done the lyric video, the dialogue cuts into the music, particularly Kirk's guitar too much and is more of a distraction from the song itself. It's a good video but not really great for reactions to the actual music.
