I mean, with that description of what a “Plague World” is it’s kind of an accurate report. Cause we do in fact have several diseases that are known to be able to jump the species gap.

True enough but a virus would not be able to read non Earth DNA unless there was some reason it used the same coding, which seems monumentally unlikely barring a common origin. If they didn't even have DNA an Earth virus would be SOL. Bacterial and fungal infections would be possible still but they seem less likely candidates to get through an advanced species medical defenses.
Yea lol and scientist always say earth diseases wouldn't bother aliens and vice versa, but theres no evidence they'd be all that different in terms of cell cell structure and what protiens the DNA is made up of. Maybe a mild disease that all humans have would be absolutely catastrophic for another intelligent species. Theh wouldn't have evolved alongside the viruses and bacteria, we've been in a constant war with them all since the beginning. Imagine if the "deathworld" type categorization of earth in these stories is accurate to reality? 🤯 maybe thats why we don't detect anything. Perhaps we've been quarantined off until we figure out how to not be mentally deficient war apes 😂
Add onto that, deadly mega-fauna, unstable tectonics, tidal forces, acid rain, an ionically charged atmosphere, a massive variance in temperatures, active volcanism, and an atmosphere that contains a significant quantity of arguably one of the most reactive, corrosive gasses on the periodic table(Oxygen, Hydrogen and Florine kinda fight for that position, but Oxygen is the only one of those three that can form multiple bonds.) and you have yourself a planet that, from an outside perspective, is an inhospitable, toxic hell hole.
And yet as far as we know, we're the only planet that has life anywhere in the galaxy.
Although I personally don't think that we should call earth a deathworld. The tectonic activity recycles minerals into the crust from the mantle. Those tidal forces are what allowed for the transition from the water to the land by the first microorganisms, whilst simultaneously allowing a zone for the first macro-organisms to adjust to breathing air. Volcanism similarly distributes minerals into the soil, oxygen is not only efficient for cellular metabolisms, but also forms ozone, which helps mitigate ionising radiation. The constant battle of micro and macro organisms drives evolution.
I don't mind the concept of deathworlds in fiction, but in reality, intelligent life would probably never evolve on a less competitive world, as there wouldn't be the same selective pressures.

Personal head cannon: there are no category 7 plague worlds, there are just 4 other worlds where the natives won the battle for mind link supremacy
To be fair, that alone could be a reason to leave those worlds alone. If sending waves of scouts is just going to end up with them all fading out anyway, it might be easier to tell their families that they died to a disease than to tell them they got overpowered in a mind battle that their species should be the strongest in.

At that point humanity could have the time needed to breakdown and reverse engineer the tech

I love the idea of the original owner of the body going "mcdonalds mcdonalds mcdonalds!" To the alien parasite
First off, Dave, go to the doctor and see if you're actually dying. If not, let your friends and family know, then, contact the government.
Here's the plan: we apparently turn the tables on the Goa'uld, so we're somewhat safe to be "invaded" but we need time. Grab the ship and modify it for human use. Bring some strong minded people, preferably particularly well disciplined soldiers, in case they become hosts. Engage a covert operation and bring back a few more Goa'uld for study. If we can bring back some more ships, that would be nice.
And if Dave's classification of us as a plague world is not a lie, but comes from using the ship's computer to crosscheck their biology with diseases from Earth, then the covert mission alone would leave them open to a hostile takeover. Given how advanced they are, it would take decades, if not centuries, to be ready for some... fun. In the meantime, their civilization dwindles to a manageable level.

With an alien ship full of technology to reverse engineer and blockade enforcement utterly terrified of the chance of any contact at all? (and probably having strict instructions of additional containment in case of any contact whatsoever) Doesn't sound like a very enforceable isolation assuming one does not want to be isolated.

Based on the description, Earth would absolutely be classed as a "plagueworld". Preliminary readings would confirm that, should the Imperium ever question the report, and with limited resources they'd probably not look any deeper. Thus, Earth is probably safe from Xeno conquering for a long while.
Hmm...Maybe they weren't adequately prepared for the immune system? It's possible that the immune system was different enough that it was able to detect and attack the link components.
That, or maybe our dream state messes with the safeguards in such a way that Dave could start gaining control again. Since the first time something happened was when he alien went to sleep in his body.

The hilarious thing is that that Dave didn’t lie. We do have quite a few deadly plagues and stuff.
Looking back the standard op is terrible for humans as well. As a social species people who are on the outskirts tend to be more extreme. While our Xeno got a fighter it’s just as likely he could have gotten some real crazy guy.
A retired serial killer, drug addict, any number of “loners with little human connection” who would break a direct mental connecting like tissue paper.
No to mention if the person is a psychopath. Would probably stab themselves and force the alien to feel it.
This one's pretty cool. Just like 'The 50,000' I could also see this one being a series where we follow Dave Meyers and his quest to overthrow the imperium, but it also works good ending where it did. Overall it's a solid story so kudos to the author and kudos to Net for choosing it.

I had a concept of microscopic sensors in about 10% of humans and 1% of other Earth creatures to catalog humanities history from those perspectives.
At subjects death it would find its way to another source or self destruct if detection was a possibility (extremely unlikely).
In the later case, a few brain surgeons have detected a tiny flash of light, but had disregarded it.
Btw - these readings would be transmitted weekly to the nearest hub (clocked), then to a highly advanced computer named "Nevah", hidden in a nebula where it's cataloged along with transmissions from billions of other worlds, thousands of galaxies and hundreds of universes to other hubs and "Nevah" computers, linked together. ;-)
The problem now is that any time we'd try to leave the oort cloud, we'd get shelled by antimatter or nukes to send it back into our sun's orbit... But we at least have a good safety net for a while and a fair chunk of tech that should be in our lap with that USB and such things... Wonder if we could deliver vials of our worst stuff to there ships to contaminate them so they'd shell each other and possibly force it into our planetary course to be rid of it so we can steal more tech lol

He entered a human's brain freely of his own volition! The one thing even the gods are cautious when meddling with.
There are things in there, that can destroy the universe itself. Concepts passed down to the apes, form previous iterations of life and civilisation. We are not the first, we may be the last, or at least the one who got away.
When the gods uplifted the apes, they had no idea of the history of this world.
They came here with a mission, made humans mostly because without them that mission was impossible, some changed their minds and went native over the years. They wanted to colonise earth. Not just excavate a few mines and leave, but have a permanent presence here, with civilians and everything .
That started the tremors back home , that and a dearth of gold. There is only so much you can excavate and refine , even if you strip mine a place.

I was hoping the author would go more into why this worked out the way that it did. I think our split-brains would have been an interesting answer as to why. Good story regardless.
If I had to guess, Dave's self imposed isolation was due living with some form of mental illness, which would make sense given that he was a dropout. So maybe the skillset one learns from powering through a mental illness translates over pretty well to fighting a guest in your brain.
I would also think the existance of the subconscious, constantly undermining and degrading the symbiotes control, would be an issue. This makes sense, given that the first instance of Dave's control comes when he is asleep.

Our brains are very complex, we have multiple stuff going around up there. Some people can access stuff easier then others, while others split into multiple personalities. You could be born with a defect that helps or hinders you, you may have an accident to get a defect. You have a mind and a sub-mind. The mind does the minimal work, while the sub-mind does the most work, which is how Dave override the device and took back. Our sub-mind does stuff on its own, without us knowing to keep us safe. Which is why some people have a 6 sense.
@@ainzooalgown3927 Ye but none of that was in the story. it might as well be actions of our immune system or some microbe. It would be nice to know what helped our hero triumph but I guess some things must remain a mystery to make writing enjoyable.

@@unpronouncable2442 as Dave said. the connection went both ways. apparently the Aliens hadn't prepared for the subject to attempt a takeover while they were asleep or to continue trying to control it when they went to focus on something else. Dave tended to take control in moments when the alien lost focus on him. such as the Fast Food. the Alien muted him but immediately decided to stop paying him mind until he up and spoke to it. basically it was a mental tug of war and the Alien walked in overconfident only to get caught off gaurd
of course I'm just assuming things based on what I remember from a single listen so dont trust my thoughts immediately. I very well could be wrong
