  • Screwdriver handles vary as much as fastener heads. And from a slice of wood to a state-of-the-art mixed material ergo dynamic design. Here is my take on the handle shapes and forms of our most used tool.

    Not sure why I’ve watched so many of your older videos , but I really like your channel! Do you have stickers or anything?

      I don't have any, but that's a great suggestion. I'll think about it. Thanks.

    In my modest opinion the pb Swiss tool drivers are an absolute treat.. have Never held a snap-on though as they are almost non-existent in Germany

    While the handles need to be comfortable, what sells me on expensive screwdrivers is the tip, specifically Phillips. I know I’m gonna get people telling me they use *blank* brand, been using them for *blank* years and never had an issue. A couple months ago, we were trying to take the solenoid off an EGR valve. Two guys couldn’t get it off, almost stripping the screw. One uses Pittsburgh, can’t remember what the other guy was using, but I was able to bite and remove it with my SnapOn. Say what you will, but SnapOn makes damn good screwdrivers and pliers.

      @@phatbaby4234 I’ve heard good things about them. The one thing that holds me back is the JIS thing. I heard they were good, but I’ve heard they’re for JIS, not Phillips. I’d really like to try them out, but don’t know anyone that has them.

    Agreed, the Instinct handles are wonderful - I have eight of them and I'd have a lot more if Snap-On's prices weren't so punishing. Other than that, I like Wera, Wiha and Beta Grip.

    'One thing you can do is just screw something for quite a while - you know, just spend five minutes going back and forth...' Thanks for the advice Doc, I might just try that ;-) Seriously though, Snap-On Instinct handles are really nice - I just bought the whole 12-piece Grip set of mini screwdrivers and picks because I like those handles so much. Yes, they are expensive, and yes, I'm worth it.

    Not sure why this channel keeps coming up in my feed. Regardless, there are a few very good videos discussing the history of the screw. Very much worth watching for all involved.

    I would recommend you to look at Wiha screwdrivers. German made and they won an ergonomics award fro their handle.

    I bought the instinct handle torx. And the hard handle Phillips and flat set. I got the new color for the hard handles which is Power Blue. Not a huge fan of the instinct handles but I don’t use torx a whole lot so it was good plus they were on sale. I got the 9 piece set they have hard handles but they are only available in 7 piece sets instead of 9. Really it all comes down to preference. The blue ones are so nice I’m scared to use them lol.

    I like the classic craftsman screwdriver handle. They’re so simple but they feel pretty good to me.
    But I LOVE snap on instinct handles. I feel like I could turn an engine over with them
    The obvious problem is that everyones hands are different. Some people have fatter fingers, longer fingers, wide palms, big thumbs etc. ideally you would make an individual handle for each persons specific grip. The challenge is creating a ‘universal’ grip that anyone can pick up and feel comfortable with.

    If you have a snap on rep you can ask them to replace one your handles with a different shaft. This is only a suggestion as i haven't done it myself. But you have definitely given me the idea to find out for myself. Because you're right about being able to choose the right fit instead of the manufacturer telling us what we need. Also great chanel and taking the time to show us your collection.

    Good vid Doc. It is about the handles, which is why I have to disagree with you on the Kleins,I perfer them over my Snapons. That big rubber handle is way better then the hard plastic on the Snapons. 😀
    Looking forward to your next vid 👍

      I like the Kleins too, but the snap on soft instinct beats the Klein in my experience. The hard square snappies don’t work for me, and the older ones are even worse.

      Our Army aviation toolboxes have snap-on screwdrivers with handles the same style as the klein ones. It is the best of both worlds if you like Klein handles, since you get the same shank and tip as the Instinct drivers. The part number on my #2 Phillips is SDCGP42IRR. I can't find info about it online but maybe ask your dealer. They may be unique to the government contract.

      @@deltahawk1001 95 % of the time I use my Snapon ratcheting screw driver, I just love the handle on it. The other 5 % I use the Kleins because I can rap my hand around them, or at least my fingers. The Snapon handles just don't feel right in my hands.
      As for that tool number, they have a line of tools that you will never see on the regular tool trucks. I check my catalog and their web site and didn't get any hits, so maybe it just sold to the GSA and the Pentagon......

    Doc I havent exactly tried snap on screwdrivers persay, I have a 6 in 1 with the hard handle but its not anything special.. Check out Vessel screwdrivers I recently put up a video of a set I recently got and those screwdrivers are hands down the best I myself have personally ever used or seen. They make them in the electronic style like those snap on's also which I hope to pick up a set soon. I love snap on hard handles especially the black smooth old ones but that Vessel brand has really captured me since I started getting into being a tool aficionado.. I would like to get a set of those OLD snap on soft grip someday off ebay, I really like those.

      Vessel has an extremely limited driver style/size range coupled with a bajillion handle options, good stuff otherwise. Usage wise, I’m more familiar with PB Swiss, Wiha, Felo, Wera, Oplast (make Hazet and Gedore screwdrivers), Facom and Witte. Honestly, I can’t say any of those are better than Snap-On or Klein. It all comes down to preference. At the end of the day, we buy all of these boutique screwdrivers, and then we leave them in the drawer and use our ratcheting bit drivers 99% of the time. 😀.

    • @Tallguy203
      @Tallguy203 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertrada4783 I like how comfortable the Vessel feels in my hand and it’s striking cap on the end. It’s my go to Phillips.in the end it’s about preference. Most of the time you’re using a flat blade as a pry bar but need a good Phillips.

    • @robertrada4783
      @robertrada4783 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tallguy203 Agreed. It just dawned on me that Snap-On don’t have any thru tang striking cap screwdrivers. Something I wouldn’t want to live without. They have a hand impact driver and striking pry bars, but those are not at all the same. When I think about it though, I guess a mechanic is dealing with seized fasteners whereas I’m hammering on screwdrivers because of paint and crud. Have you used the striking cap Vessel’s with the hand impact driver like mechanism? I’m curious about those,

    Great screwdrivers at the end of the video . I think, snap on have realised that the american public can see how see how good the rest off the world.can make tools . American tools have a feling of catching up Wera, Wiha, BP Swiss, Vessel . Made in america does not mean made in america any more.

    Screwed didn’t really become a thing until firearms were a thing. They were all unique, so you could not easily replace them. But they used them because you needed to take parts on and off of it. They existed before that, but firearms seem to be the first widespread usage of them.
