The false idea of the death of the suit seems parallel to the death of classical music. I'm quite confident both are timeless.

The suit really helped me change my life around and I think everyone should get one quality suit that gives them a bit of life when they wear it. When my business failed that I started at 16, I went out looking for work and also got a suit at a thrift shop. The suit actually fit very closely and made me realize how comfortable a quality suit was. This suit, I don’t know why, gave me a much needed boost of the confidence to get out of debt and face the world. Thanks to the suit, I have a full time jobs that pays well and beautiful fiancée. The suit in a sense gave me the feeling of confidence that I needed to change my life too where I am today.

What we have all been through the last several months, now more than ever, is the time to keep our sartorial elegance ALIVE!! I TOTALLY agree. Suits are not coming back but not fast enough. Went to my nephew’s and step cousins Catholic confirmation. Obviously wore a suit. However to my horror a large percentage of the attendees WORE Levi’s and short sleeve shirts and sneakers. however there were a couple of suits to include a young man. There is hope. My dad RIP wore a suit to church every Sunday until the end when he was too sick to put one on. Hard core.

To take two thoughts from two separate episodes of Sartorial Talks, we choose to wear a suit the way we choose to be a gentleman.
Why should we let a pandemic, or any event, dictate when we can look good? In my opinion, dressing well and living elegantly is a lifestyle choice and a true gentleman doesn’t surrender that choice under any circumstance.

Loved your show today. Yes, suits and dressing up are here to stay! The line “The demise of the suit has been greatly exaggerated.” comes of course from Mark Twain’s statement after his death was reported in newspapers. He stood on the front door of his house and said to a group of reporters “The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.”
As an American I’m perhaps a bit prejudiced in favor of Twain. One of my favorite quotes about clothes from Twain is:”Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.” Thanks again for another great and optimistic show!

Best format for your talks. I’ve already subscribed to your podcast and can’t wait to hear more. I would love to hear a talk about getting dressed up from a religious perspective. As a Roman Catholic I try to get dressed up for mass (I am able to go to mass now since the Covid lockdowns) since our Blessed Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is right there in front of us in the Eucharist. He is the King of Kings and Lord of lords and is entitled to our respect, which clothing can help us exude. When we get dressed up for God, we will do the same for others and in doing so, give respect to both God and neighbor.

Nowadays, it is not at all difficult to be the best dressed man in the room. Everywhere you look you see men whose attire can be described accurately as drab, uniform, and uninspired. The casual dress code that the masses have adopted is utterly lacking in class and refinement. I may look that way when I go to the carwash or when I'm doing yardwork, but at all other times I enjoy presenting myself with style and good taste. To me dressing well is a way of showing respect - for yourself, your business, and to the people around you. I refuse to bow to the cult of mediocrity which is so ubiquitous in men's dress today.

    Bonjour ,

As for anybody that says that elegant era is over I totally disagree with that thinking, you can look elegant without a suit but with a nice outfit that can give you a real dress look , and even though I don’t use ties all the time but I definitely use them in winter time and doesn’t necessarily has to be worn with a suit and still look very nice and elegant. As for this new “non stylish look” that society wants to impose as the new relaxed look (in my personal opinion and with all my respects) just shows how sloppy want to be and want to think that by being part of that is freedom and they couldn’t be more wrong, being elegant and well dressed doesn’t make you, it only defines how you like to express yourself.

A joy to have you both back online Mr. Hugo and Ms. Sonya. Suit - because you choose to care to wear one when not needed. Timeless classics. Shoe polishing and ironing are a bit ritual and defined in nature something the individual had perception of control over. Check TH-cam for AMSR videos of polishing. Something satisfying there.tie and cufflinks are conventions of a gentleman.

Classic menswear has changed many lives for the better, as well as mine. It gave me an identity in a world that struggles to have one of its own. It is a wonderful feeling to don a suit and tie, and, in my view, grace and elegance will never go out of style.

For the last few months I've been working at home, and I know I'm fortunate to be able to do so. I haven't been wearing a suit but I do wear a shirt and tie every day.
The things I've changed are my trousers, I'm wearing pleated chinos as they're comfortable to work in and are, I think, designed for sitting.
My jackets, which feel odd to wear at home, have been replaced by cardigans.
My reasoning is that by dressing for work I make the transition from being at home to being at work; also, and more importantly, all of my meetings are online and that means my face and upper torso are on display on another person's screen. Therefore, it's even more important to make an impression.
But if I'm really honest, the main reason is that I enjoy it. Since March we've needed the things that make us happy more than ever.

After you wear a suit, you will be amazed how comfortable it is,you will love the way it presents,It even changes the way you behave.I do hope the young genartion wil dress up again as well, although in my country,we don't have suit culture, and it's an incredible channel.

It was a nice episode to hear, and to hear a contrarian opinion from the mainstream media :)
I have been one of those many people skeptical of classic style myself, and that for years.
Then, more recently I had been wearing a suit because I had to, but discovering your site and blog some 4 or 5 years ago completely changed my perspective! Needless to say that I learned a lot. Thank you so much for your work.
I also must admit that I overstayed in pyjamas and t-shirts after the pandemic started, but since a couple of months I've been suiting up much more frequently again. This brought me some comments from friends and colleagues, in the vein of why was I bothering, we CAN be casual everytime now, to which I mostly have been responding that my suits and jackets feel sad when they stay home for too long

I'm more than happy to allow someone else to wash, startch and iron my shirts, but my shoes and boots? It takes a great deal of self control to avoid *over* polishing them! The aroma of good leather and Saphir products are extremely calming. Much more so than the petroleum aroma of lesser shoe care products. No, I don't work for Saphir!
I do know how to iron dress shirts, but physical disabilities make it less painful to send them to a quality laundry. Hell, I even learned how to put a finish press on a suit. It comes in handy in case of emergency!

I like to dress up, and I can endulge in it when giving lectures at my university. Since the middle of March there were no lectures, and we also did all the tests (most of them are still oral/in speach) online. It is just not the same. Even if I wear a shirt and a tie, speaking to my camera is not like being in front of the students. I hope we can have a more normal fall semester (being a biologist does not help in being optimistic in this regard).

I teach grad school. With online classes, this is what I do. I had some fun with the students by wearing a hoodie which sort of threw them off. I would keep them guessing by changing up every single lecture whether it's a totally casual hoodie with my favorite soccer team or my tie or my blazer or maybe both. We may as well have fun with them when we're in that situation. I think many students find all of it very amusing to see that in their professor.

At last it seems that this 'movement' of getting back to putting back some substance into our every day is picking up pace.. For it is the opportunity and the ability, to dress up, as the article's title suggests, which allows us demonstrably show substance to what we do. I have written and talked many times about the pitifuls of casual dress and it is my belief that in business and in particular sales; that, casual dress equals casual approach which equals casual results. But more over, it is about self-respect and respect for your audience (whoever that my be) that is important. And when it comes to the masses; I was always taught to watch what they do and then do the opposite. Raising standards should be the challenge, dressing to a standard is part of that.
Thank you again Mr Hugo and Sonya, and by the way I iron my shirts and polish my shoes too. It is all about the preparation, and sales is about the preparation.

I don't dress up to go the grocery store in order to be noticed. I dress that way because that is the style I've adapted for occasions that do not require athleticism or labor. When I was in college I worked in a dry cleaner's for extra money. I worked the front desk, greeting customers, taking in and handing out the clothes to them. When not busy, the owner wanted to keep me occupied so he taught me how to iron men's shirts. I learned the meditative aspect and pleasure of ironing a good shirt as only the very best Egyptian cotton shirts were ironed by hand. Read the article and heard your thoughts. I wish I have the capacity to write an article in that calibre because there are a lot of points I would like to respond to and counter, but at least let me tell my opinion and prediction.
When the sartorial elegance makes its return to the town, you won't be able to tell one's profession and status just from their look. You will meet an IT engineer wearing a cheap but well fitted suit and a five-figure CEO wearing a bespoke ripped jeans. It will be an era of freedom of expression through clothing and clothing won't be a primary symbol of social status or class.

It is so refreshing to hear an argument opposing, at least in my opinion, the ridiculous notion that, for example, dressing up and having an appreciation for the classical arts such as opera is somehow pretentious, or some relic of a hierarchical past. I thoroughly support your statement that if one chooses to take interest in these things, it is a sign of freedom of expression.
On that note, it is quite amusing you mentioned the tie explicitly in that regard.
Just to provide some context, I live in a country where men dress up extremely seldom, in the sense that the average clothing is jeans/hiking trousers/cargo shorts and t-shirt in summer and ski jackets in winter, therefore just the act of wearing a jacket in summer or an overcoat in winter is somewhat excentric in the first place. Intrestingly enough, that is not the case for women, which subsequently produces very interesting images of couples where you have a lady in a nice dress and next to her a bloke in cargo shorts for example. Not being judgy of course, everyone has the right to dress how he wants, I just think it is an interesting contrast. I wear chinos, shirt and a jacket most of the time, possibly because I was often visiting Britain in my youth, so I had this particular aesthetic of a “country gentleman” in my mind since forever.
Anyway, couple of days ago, I was again contemplating whether to include a tie. To be completely frank, I would wear a tie all the time, but then I asked myself if it were not “too much”, so in the end, I ended up going without. This is the main reason why your comment regarding personal freedom hit the mark, in my opinion.
I am very glad that I found your channel those years back. Without a doubt, your videos were a souce of some very meaningful inspiration for me. Stay safe and keep up the good work!
    Cheers,
    Ivan

    • @SARTORIALTALKS
      @SARTORIALTALKS  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Dear Ivan, thank you for your very interesting and thoughtful comment. When you write all the people dress more or less the same way, it means, paradoxically, that they are not using their freedom of expression and try to ressemble their neighbour. Northing wrong with this, but this makes me laugh when I hear American men standing for their freedom of speech (and their freedom in every aspect of life) when, eventually, they all dress (down) the same way... I can't count the number of these horrible Columbia oversized short sleeves shirts with vents in the back I've seen in Georgia. Some men strongly believe there it is THE garment to wear to be a man. Hilarious! Cheers my friend, Hugo

    Hello Hugo,
It is so good to see you and Sonya at home. I was first introduced to you during your interview with Eric Metaxas. I wanted more and started to research. Finding Sartorial Talks, I dined on your content absorbing each presentation. It is refreshing to have been made aware of your work in this field. For many years and into my retirement I have always found comfort in my suits. Being an architect I pushed against the establishment and chose elegance over the "blue blazer John T. Malloy uniform", by selecting combinations that no one else was wearing at the time. I appreciate that you encourage people to experiment and find their own style. With your expert guidance guidance all will find success. You have also reinforced my choice in hairstyles as i chose to wear long hair four years ago. It is unlikely that we should meet in this world , but I look forward to meeting you and Sonya in Eternity. Blessings... Rol

Thank you so much Rol for taking the time to write this beautiful and encouraging message. I'm happy you found us through Eric who is a good friend, and a brother in Christ. Welcome in the long hair squad and see you, either here or upstairs. Yours, Hugo

I think that both pronunciations of “hierarchical” are correct, although I think that Hugo’s pronunciation is the most popular in English, whereas Sonya’s, ironically, is more posh and sounds more like the French pronunciation, “hiérarchie.” Lol! I love your show and please keep up the good work!

Google translate uses the pronunciation more like Hugo. It's the pronunciation I have always used.

The death of the suit has been greatly exaggerated. I would get behind the demise of the skinny lapel suit though. I’m around a 40 regular in US sizing, I may seem picky but my lapel has to be at least 2.5”, if it’s not it look ridiculous with all my ties. I hope that we enter a new age of beauty, quality, and a resurgence of local tailors.

@@SARTORIALTALKS What I mean is that Greek people don't tend to dress up, I know only a man (a good friend of mine) that is intrested by the sartorial world and that's because of me and I heard that you have someone from Greece.
