Linux Phone vs. De-Googled Android AOSP - Which is better for Privacy?

  • There are two options to get some privacy when using mobile phones. These are Linux Phones and AOSP (De-Googled) Phones. Which are better?
These two types of devices operate on different privacy principles and this video gets into how one type of device deals with data exclusion while the other approach deals with data disinformation.
Linux Phones can be Ubuntu Touch (Nexus 5, Oneplus One), Pinephone (Ubuntu Touch, Debian/Phosh, Nemo/Sailfish, etc.), Librem 5 (Phosh, Ubuntu Touch) and many new ones coming out soon.
AOSP (De-googled) include LineageOS with No GAPPS, /e/ Foundation. GrapheneOS, and my own BraxROM. These are all fine. They just use different devices. All have no Google on them and are built in a similar way.
Some of these are available on my store so check the link below.

BraX2 Privacy Phone is now available on Amazon for $399 including prime shipping.

@@Techie-ks9nh He keeps recommending graphene OS which is absolutely stupid since that means he also recommends that you use a google phone and give google your money so they can develop better spying tools. He also completely ignores the possibility of the hardware itself collecting data and sending it to google.
Also not a fan of these sensationalist titles like: "THIS is the most private and secure phone on the planet - GrapheneOS review and how to install" Especially if it's a lie.

I moved over to LineageOS with no Gapps a while back now, what triggered this was one day when entering something in to my diary I decided not to as it was not something I particularly wanted Google to know about, I then realised what a ridiculous situation this is where my personal diary is shared with strangers against my will...
BTW-A vital feature in my opinion of any phone which is often overlooked is the ability to be able to back it up and quickly restore to a replacement phone if needed, this can easily be done with TWRP but usually seems impossible on a standard phone. Google will kindly offer to back up all your data but apart from the privacy issues I have found this not to work very well and also if any app you use is removed from the app store then you can not get it or your data back.

It's understandable with google maps when getting directions but other than that it seems obsessive. I really have nothing to hide but it's a bit creepy how persistent they are with enabling location and what their plans might be for the future.

    I'm an iOS developer and there's an important thing that people should know;
There are "developers" and there are "SUPER DEVELOPERS". Google is a super developer because they are not subject to the same Apple "approval" process that is required for the rest of us. Google can BYPASS the app approval process. HOWEVER, they are still subject to the same app requirements and when Google was caught violating the Apple app agreement, Apple SUSPENDED them. Also, if your iOS app is LEGIT, there is a "PERMISSIONS LIST" in the app code that requires myself (or any other coder) to WARN YOU when we are going to use a device on your phone such as the MIC or the CAMERA and we must add our own custom text that appears when you first run that app that asks for your permission to use these devices and explains how and when they will be accessed. If companies are violating this policy, then they're doing so either WITHOUT Apple's knowledge or WITH Apple's blessing.

Consider me subscribed! So a quick question: Is there any benefit installing an app such as FireFox from F-Droid instead of Google Play? In other words, is an apk from Google's store somehow altered compared to the same apk downloaded elsewhere?
I really only use a couple apps on my phone, and try to do as much as I can through the browser. To that end, if you can support more powerful phones/tablets that allow this kind of operation, I would gladly pay for that service- either in the form of a paid ROM/TWRP downloadable, or buying a device you've prepared. Currently, I am using a Huawei phone and tablet, and really love how well equipped they are. My ONLY gripe is their awful support as custom ROMS go. Frankly that's what brought me here today :)
Stay healthy and safe and thanks for your content.

Since I run the switch and all my calls go from my Land Line, I think it is about as secure is it gets. Does this make sense to you? The Phone switch software is Open Source and I can call from computers, tablets, anything that run Linux! In fact, I only have laptops working right now while testing. The phones will be the next big addition. I do need a Data plan from my wireless carriers (T-Mobile and AT&T right now) but they are pretty cheap for as little data as I am using. I only use their data plan to get back to my switch. And they don't have anything to do with the phone calls at all. I like the idea of being my own phone company. I am using a little external data modem to give me TCP.IP on any little computer I want to hook up. At the very least I am learning a whole lot. I got this little box with the service which is small external 3G or 4G modem with service, and it is all I need to hook up any little linux test computers. It is fun and a learning experience, at the very least.
    Cheers, Richard
P.S. I am slowly getting caught up on your videos based on needs and interest, not all in order.
It will be a while before I am caught up! Thanks for the GREAT Info you provide to all of us!

Easy to do of course since someone can just stick a magnetic sensor on there. However, no one would waste their time on that now when they can just track your phone

Hi Rob, Im about to make the switch to a linux phone.... Money is an issues with current shutdowns. Should I go pine phone or nexus with linux install? I don't use very many apps at all. Also, I will jump on to Braxme platform soon too. great stuff, I love it and we need it...

Nexus 5 will have a short life. Not working in the US anymore for many carriers. So Pinephone but it's not ready for primetime so you have to be patient

Have you considered crdroid for the nexus 5? It's a rom based off lineageOS that is more actively maintained than both lineageOS for the nexus 5 as well as UBports. It is allows you to run android 10 on the nexus 5. It's also and official build, so it is less likely there will be old, buggy code as there likely is in older versions of android. It is also nice and customizable, so you can rice your phone just like you would rice your desktop OS.

I'm a huge fan of LG phones. Will the Nexus 5 run on AT&T with Ubuntu touch and does it have a mobile hotspot? I was surprised to find that my LG Stylo 2 did not.

Unfortunately no, I had a coversation on this with my coworkers not long ago when I tried to explain to them why i stick to linux on PC. People are generally disinterested in mass spying done by government and companies, keep in mind these are people who are 25yo at most who are tech literate. I am now looking int o degoogled options for phones simplybto try and revive some old hw but the privacy is nice too.

@@valletas I do hope you are right, but the number of people who are aware and don't care about it is legitimately concerning. Linux and bsd on pc make cumulatively up to 5-8% of the market on desk, that is if we count the other option as eather linux or bsd.

I learned about "phones with dip switches" on your channel, very cool! We have needed this option since the beginning, a wonderful development we finally got in 2020. Beside Ubuntu Touch or UB Ports do we have any non Ubuntu options for OS choice? Your Oneplus One video is great btw, super informative! :)

Only if you have the bootloader unlock code. Huawei stopped allowing bootloader unlocking.. But there might be a way with DC unlocker. If you manage to do that, go to openkirin and follow the instructions to install a rom without gapps

Almost all the linux desktop amd64/i386 CISC packages in the distribution repositories are compiled to ARM, can run on a linux mobile without any issues, but the GUIs of those software are not mobile/touch friendly eg:(GIMP, VLC, LibreOffice, Firefox, Chromium, Transmission ... etc). There are some mobile friendly softwares also(Nautilus, calculator, evence document reader, empathy, address book phonebook, calendar, clock alarm stopwatch, GNOME Control Centre & All other gnome softwares ... etc). finally you can run any linux server application on a linux mobile. eg:(Apache, Postfix, voip, VPNs, SSH, php, tomcat curl ... etc).

It's hard to find any reviews on practical apps for a Linux phone, probably because few people use them. I've watched several of your videos, but you don't go into much detail on the usability of apps on Linux phones. Do you have one that I missed, or a recommended web site that has that info? I'm primarily interested in texting, navigation, web browsing, weather, photos, kindle and music.

You're right. Few people use them and the functionality of all are just webapps. No Kindle. Music is Cloud Music (Free). Navigation is uNav. My App Brax.Me is on there
