    SSDs have some interesting failure modes. Back in 2015 or so I was at a company using them as write caches for HDDs, 120GB SSD to 24TB of HDD. When the SSDs eventually burnt out they didn't go read only, they accepted 3 writes per second. If they'd gone read only we'd have handled it but 3 writes per second on a distributed storage system just slowed everything to a crawl.

    • @CampGareth
      @CampGareth ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Bit more context: It was a Ceph cluster, 40 storage nodes hosting iscsi drives for VMs. Normal write load was single digit thousands of IOPS. Ceph was in replica mode I.e. write 3 copies of the data to different nodes before confirming the write to a VM so write latency was important and that's why SSDs came in. We knew they'd burn out but 10x the write performance was worth it. Ceph is clever, if a node stops accepting writes it'll be marked unhealthy and the data copied to a new node. Ceph didn't consider low write performance unhealthy so would keep writing when the SSD burnt out. Given how the iscsi volumes were distributed any VM would see massive degradation on a small number of its blocks. Can't remember the original brand but we swapped to samsungs which behaved properly at the time. No guarantee newer controllers won't do weird stuff.

My problem stemmed from a waterpipe bursting beneath my room, so my family had to clean it up while I was away. This required them to move my main PC from and to my room, shaking the case in the process, which resulted in some loose contacts in the case. I hope the BSODs don't repeat, as my backup computer is just... not ready for the bulk of my work. Now, I see the benefits on being prepared. Trouble strikes when we least expect it to.

They are relatively inexpensive and most motherboards have quite a few pcie slots that end up being unused. In my old pc I had 3 of those running for a total of 5 fully functional m.2 ssds in my pc. Might be something that is interesting for you. Especially since the SSDs running through the PCIe slots behave like you would expect.

I have a system running on old hardware (3770 and 8GB of DDR3) and Unraid has all my computers back up to it (which the very important stuff automatically backing up to a cloud storage). Along with loads of other automated stuff like download, media serving, file serving, etc, it's just amazing, and I don't know how or why I didn't get it running sooner. It runs cool, doesn't use much power, I've it connected to a UPS, so if power goes out, it shuts down gracefully, it's has cache drive redundancies, drive redundancies... and on a reasonable budget. EDIT: just saw your sticky, and I see my comment is not very relevant to your situation. Maybe the lack of desktop backup could be implemented tho. Others will maybe see this and find it useful. With windows backup you can sync all your files and setting to it automatically so it's an easy restore and reachable from the back-up PC or a laptop. If you do want to do it properly with raid or parity I'd recommend going with a dedicated system like Unraid (use an old PC) or Synology which also offer self hosted password managers without subscriptions and other neet stuff.

    When my 2TB 980 Pro died it went read only and it took a while to figure out that it did but once I did I scoured around for a windows flash drive (I have a few laying around and somehow got one of the non server ones) and installed it in a partition on a 1TB Sata SSD that then became my boot drive. Once that happened I grabbed a 2TB SSHD (2.5" drive aka worse than a normal hard drive that I didn't use before I hated it) and backed up my entire 980 Pro to that. Was actually happy about it because my windows install was about 6 years old and was seriously botched after that time plus upgrading to win 11 (Currently still on win 10 and it will stay that way. Too many issue with 11 currently.) But for anything I need from my old install I can just access that 2TB SSHD and fire up any program or file I need from it. Messy but my workflow has always been messy.

    I've started backing everything important up to an unraid server in a spare room, with 2 disks worth of parity. If I'm working on a video project on my main editing/rendering PC the data is saved there, but there is also a copy saved to unraid that can be accessed by any other PC on the network (assuming they have the correct credentials).

    Its a shame there isnt something like GIT for video editing. I switch between a bunch of computers for software development. Ive never really had to think of backups since its all easily accesible through the cloud.

      There isn't anything stopping you from using git for video editing. GIT LFS for large media files, normal git for the project files. Not ideal, but it works.

      @@kliksphilip FreeFileSync would work well for you.
      Create a shared drive on your back PC and map it to your main PC.
      Then just push your changes 1-way over the network, keeping your backup PC 100% ready to use.
      Obviously a NAS would help too, but this way requires zero extra hardware.

    Haha yeah, I've had the same problem recently with my phone just dying on me completely out of the blue, and since it was encrypted, I lost everything, and I didn't even have a proper backup! I just never had the spare space for a real backup, and apart from images and a couple of different things, everything was gone, including all my 2-Factor Authenticators which were just... Terrible to set up again.
    Now I'm still thinking of a proper way to preserve such things

  • @terner1234
    @terner1234 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know if someone mentioned this, but if you have enough free space (and money) to spare, you can create a RAID (probably version 1/5 depending on the count).
    This will ensure that one drive can fail without any data loss (at the cost of more CPU usage and less storage space than all drives combined)

    You should use a backup software like Macrium Reflect. Not just to backup important files but also to make image backups of your system drive so you can migrate/restore your OS installation to new drives.

  • @acuteaura
    @acuteaura 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Macrium is super convenient for this. Just make your OS partition small (like 256GB) and keep daily backups on an external drive or NAS, and have bootable media ready to restore.

    Yep, my MP600 2TB failed on me earlier this year as well. It was also very confusing because looking at dmesg, it looked like the Mp600 was literally resetting itself during usage? Not sure, but it resulted in similar super-strange pc death until you eventually lock up.
    Lucky for me I have a scheduled task to send a snapshot of my computer’s zfs root and home zfs datasets to my nas behind be at every boot or otherwise every 12 hours if left online.
    The nas runs a scrub on the data monthly so I know it’s ok. That nas also forwards those snapshots to a remote storage server in case my house literally burns down.
    It was a bummer but man, backups are good.

    You could also make your backup pc a home server. I used unraid and my desktop gets backed up daily along with some other folders at different time intervals. So if my main drive does go down I just still access the files from my laptop and just redownload once i put in a new drive.

    When I worked in theatre I noticed that all of the computers running the show would be synced to a second computer, doing the exact same actions with the exact same files at the same time. Meaning that if one PC failed during a show, you could flip a switch and go to the backup PC which was identical to the other one.

    I also had a 2TB MP600 fail on me a few months ago. The drive gave me sporadeous blue screens from the beginning but I thought the problem wasnt my SSD. Until it completely failed and I lost some data which was not backed up to my raid 1. Now I basically bought the aorus version of the same drive, hoping for the best lol

    lifehack for next time you need to take out your GPU a bunch of times: Put some chopsticks in your toolbox. Ideally some longer than the height of those oversized coolers. If you're crafty enough to can even use them to install the CPU power plugs in the top left corner of the motherboard.

    Duplicati is a cool software that allows for continuous (like, every hour) incremental (only the bytes that changed) backups that get thinned out over time.
    It even does deduplication on a block-by-block basis. So, if you have two video files that are 99% the same, it only copies the 1% that changed.
    From my research it is the best free thing out there. If anyone disagrees, please tell me! I want to know!

    I had the same problem but with a samsung 860 evo. Brand new 2nd drive, 3 days later it died mid game in cyberpunk (Go figure). I ordered a new one and now it works, but now my inland prime ssd (Been 2 months since i've had it) suddenly corrupted my nvidia gpu drivers. I'm gonna keep using it and hope it was another problem. Overall people give way too much credit for SSD's being this reliable form of storage, more so than HDD. Which it isn't and never can be. They're certainly "reliable", just not reliable enough for me to ever use it as a backup drive.

    If you don't mind about the electricity cost, what about keeping the backup PC on all the time? You can kinda make it as your main data dump that you don't need immediate access to, and make your main computer just some editing/short-term data storage/gaming computer? The local LAN speeds are above gigabits with how the things look like, and you can make it for a relatively cheap price.
    One of the benefits of having a local backup PC/data dump and sorts is you can install plex to watch stuff, or use it to run some benchmarks of games while you use your main PC? I see infinite possibilities with this, and that's what my father is currently doing with his kinda server-y build. Though he also uses it for his profession

    • @Dapplication
      @Dapplication ปีที่แล้ว

      And you can kinda write a small script that backs up some set files everyday to that backup PC. Tons of companies are using auto-backup apps, as it's just a hassle to do bear up with the off time backups make.

    Wouldn't be better for your needs to have an external backup system. I mean, a case with the hard disks you need and a power supply, connected to the main pc with just a cable. Something similar to a NAS, but without the network. Your mechanical disks have a limited write and read speed anyway, so there's no need to keep them attached to the sata ports of the motherboard.
