T-90 From Revell Is The Worst Model I've Ever Built

  • Revell's 1/72 T-90 MBT is so bad. If you release a model kit as bad as this, and you sell it in toy stores, you clearly don't want potential young modellers getting into this hobby. Shame on you, Revell!
If you're interested in this tank in 1/72 scale, look for Zvezda or Modelcollect. This one is definitely not worth your money.

Huh, this is actually really refreshing to hear an experts opinion on revell, I had a few car kits lying around from my childhood that I never got to putting together, and a few years ago decided to try it out while dealing with some medical issues. I followed the directions to the T, but was extremely disappointed at the finished product, I didnt use the best paints or anything, so I knew it wouldnt look amazing. But the wheels were like falling apart, the suspension geometry was all wonky, it just looked horrible. I always assumed I just wasnt good at modeling real world physical models and should stick to 3d computer modelling. But Now I'm wondering if I should take a swing at it with a better kit.

You can find _Revell_ kits in every toy store here in Germany too. It's probably how they got so successful, pushing their kits into every toy store, small or large, all over the country. When it comes to the model kit market here in Germany, _Revell_ has a market share of about 77% (yeah, I don't know why and how either) and like every company that absolutely dominates its niche, there is little incentive for them to improve in any way.
btw _Revell_ originally was an American company founded by Lewis H. Glaser in New York City in 1943.

In Russia, we say "Révell" and "Síria" (your first variant).
Uncle Martin, you should check new Zvezda's modern AFV 1/72 models like Armata, Terminator (LoL), T-90 A and MC. They're easy to build, have much better quality and they are pretty cheap.
Also check on the Scalemates site some revell's kits, some of them are reboxing of Zvezda (but not this disgusting T-90A)

Lastly as a side note is it just me or are zvezda boxes much thicker and tougher than all the other makes.

Having said that, I recently built one of their T-34/85s on impulse and it was OK, at least as far as assembly went. Especially compared to the Ace Centurion Mk3 which forces you to pick between having return rollers, fenders and the grossly mis-shaped, oversized and flash-laden sprocket wheels or their weird two-parts per side adhesive resistant rubber tracks; you can’t have both because there isn’t room to fit all the parts even if you cut the guide horns off the top run of the tracks.
And it has instructions that are as clear as mud when it comes to working out which way round some parts are supposed to go or where they are supposed to attach.

Oh Revell, that brings back memories. Back in the early 2000's I used to build pretty much only Revell kits as they were the only ones sold by the toystore nearby. Some went together perfectly and were a lot of fun (I still have a Bf 109 and a P-51A with fond memories attached) but some were absolute monstrosities. In my experience, it was mostly the airplanes that went together well, the tanks were a pain. I honestly never cared too much about scale accuracy as they were used for playing, and I'll give them being sturdy enough to withstand a couple of months of abuse by a 10- and 12 year old.
What did strike me was that when I walked into a model store last week for the first time in over a decade, they were still selling some of the exact same kits that I built back then. Just for fun I looked up the descendants of some of the old kits given to me by my grandfather all those years ago, and they still used the same tooling for their Sturmpanzer IV (1993) as the kit given to me from 1975!

i know that revell kids are not really sonsumer friendly, and yes they are mostly for kids, but i started with models from them in an age of 8 and found it pretty easy to build them. so yes i can imagine to give them to my own kid haha.

Your attention to detail is commendable and creative! An artist with a model kit! You put something extra into what is just a basic T-90 tank kit. Cheers!

Near my area their pretty good and my local model store has a lot of the models but you need to make sure you don’t buy lvl 1. My experience with Revell is pretty good I prefer it. My worst experience is with italeri

I used to get revell model kits all the time when I was a kid. I had a really hard time building them and they always turned out terrible. I thought that's just how model kits are.
But now I see these kits are just crap and there's actually a reason I had such a hard time with them as a kid.

Diluted putty, with anti- Revell rant tears...😭😭🥺🤯
I've built tons of Revell kits , some are easy, some are crap. But, aren't we all modelers, sometimes we like a challenge. Revell kits can be nicely finished replicas if you put the work in. Shep Paine comes to mind. You definitely polished a turd in this video..great job!

I know you probably won't see this, but as always I found this video, like your others, inspirational. There was a joy to seeing what you did with this kit as i would have just built it out if the box. Yes, I am a 50 year old child, what can I say!!! 😂😂 Wonderful stuff Martin, thank you.👍😉

That hand drill you were using on the smoke tubes, was that a drill bit in a watch stem holder?

Yes. Revell kits are awful. Bad details and most of the time no clear lines so there are holes to fill and so on. Some parts don't fit at all. When you take your time you can make something decent. My first kits were from Revell, it wasn't my best experience to be honest. It was OK. But after building some good kits like flyhawk (which they don't have in any store so I have to order them from China every time) I really started to appreciate modeling as a hobby.
But once I ordered a katyusha rocket launcher bm-13 from the brand PST. It was worse. Even the paint would not stick to the model (with cleaning of course).
    Greetings from Germany,
    home of Revell
    (seriously, these are everywhere here)

Haha, Revell kits were also my introduction to the hobby, but I was a kiddo back then so I didn't really care. Flyhawk kits are pure art!

Revell are for Mums and Aunty's to get you for xmas . They were crap back in the 70's and still are

Yeah. Revell is fairly old as far as scale model companies go, so they have tons upon tons of mediocre old kits that they keep reboxing (such as their 1:48 P-51D and F4U-4). At least they're cheap.

Does anyone know what particular tank he’s modeling? I googled it, but didn’t find anything

    • @theandf
      @theandf 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's the T-90 tank which got hit by a TOW in Syria and "survived". I think there are even videos in TH-cam. The tank gets hit, there's an explosion (possibly the ERA bricks deflecting the missile) and you see one of the crew climbing out, still alive. I've never seen the "after" photos or whatever Uncle Night Shift seems to be referencing, but I read the tank "survived" in the sense the crew lived to tell the tale and the tank was able to be repaired. I assume it was knocked out of that particular fight though (someone correct me if I'm wrong, please).

Stuck at home with COVID, a friend brought me a kit for the Arizona. And I can't even get past step one, the hull of the ship looks great, until you try and fit them together
