That was the original idea, since The Mask is based on a comic book from Dark Horse Comics. The comics focused on different individuals who come into possession with the supernatural artifact and bloody mayhem ensues, New Line Cinema viewed this as a perfect replacement for Freddy Krueger since they killed him off in Freddy's Dead at the time. They chose Chuck Russell to direct the film since he had experience in the realm of horror thanks to him directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, but he felt that the character was too similar to Freddy and wanted the film to be a comedy instead, they said no and he exited for the time being. So they began working on the horror version of The Mask but long story short it didn't work out and hired back Chuck Russell to direct and the rest is history.

It's interesting how he not only seems to be able to affect himself, but also those around him. The best example is when he makes the entirety of the police force dance. This film is a classic and Jim Carrey is the man!
The Mask was originally going to be about a serial killer wearing a wooden green mask but when Jim Carrey put it on he actually manifested these powers
That was the original idea, since The Mask is based on a comic book from Dark Horse Comics. The comics focused on different individuals who come into possession with the supernatural artifact and bloody mayhem ensues, New Line Cinema viewed this as a perfect replacement for Freddy Krueger since they killed him off in Freddy's Dead at the time.
They chose Chuck Russell to direct the film since he had experience in the realm of horror thanks to him directing A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, but he felt that the character was too similar to Freddy and wanted the film to be a comedy instead, they said no and he exited for the time being.
So they began working on the horror version of The Mask but long story short it didn't work out and hired back Chuck Russell to direct and the rest is history.

So many different scripts were written, with some missing the point of the comic’s dark sadistic humor, and one actually deviated from the source material entirely. The one script in question actually focused on a mask maker who created masks out of the faces of cadavers, kidnaps a couple of unsuspecting teenagers, and places said masks on their faces turning them into zombies.

My childhood was so amazing because of Jim Carrey. From the Mask to Ace Venture To the Riddler Jim Carrey was that guy.
Funny thing of this scene is the Villains do a good acting as the mask, they deserved the oscar too.
