      I just found mine, used (2015) at a Honda dealership where they had picked it up on auction. There is little to no wiggle room when dealing with them on these trucks - everyone wants 'em.

    No other full size truck beats this truck in the world for fuel economy.
    I have 100,000 miles on my 2014 Laramie 3.0l ecodiesel and it is still solid, never dropped since new at 30 miles.
    17-19 mpg towing,
    19 city
    24mpg with 2000lbs in the bed highway
    27-29mpg highway @65mph no trailer or load.
    3.55 rear end.
    I love my truck.

    I'm a Ford guy, I owned a crown vic, and now own a 93 f150 2wd 4.9 with 297,000 miles but guess what, when I get a new job, truck I'm getting? This truck! Just love the interior, love the instrument cluster, love the amount of info you can see and of course this engine! Funny thing is I've always hated Chrysler products but I think Fiat is doing a good job.

    Great video Andre! This video helped me decide to get an ecodiesel and I've only had it do 2 weeks but I've hit 1,300 miles (about 150 miles have been empty) of towing my sailboat and the truck amazes me! Towing my 4,900 lb. boat I get the same mpg my 2008 hemi got empty!! I watch all the tfltruck videos and look forward to the new ones that pop up on my news feed.

    I've had my ecodiesel since August and all I have to say is WOW! The MPG is off the charts. I thought that the increase in the price of diesel might make buying it not worth it, but I took a chance anyway. I'm so glad I did. I drive 50 miles one way to work and I am getting anywhere from 26.5 miles to the gal. on bad weather days to 31.5 on nice days. This truck was worth every penny. I also can't believe how quiet it is, it really is amazing.

    Diesel MPG is WAAAAAAAAAAY different than Gas MPG. So, the 2.7L EcoBoost has best-in class GAS MPGs, but, the Ram has best-in-class DIESEL MPGs(Mostly because it' she only diesel in it's class!)

    I love the typical butt hurt comments in the comment section. So many people were begging for a diesel in a half ton and Ram finally delivered and it gets best in class gas mileage to boot. If you tow a lot or drive highway a lot, the diesel will give you your money back in no time. This is a LIFESTYLE truck, not necessarily a mall runner like the 2.7 ecoboost that many mom's will drive. It's efficient, good looking, and it gets the job done. If we were talking 3 years ago about the same truck no one would care about diesel prices because gas prices were at $4/gallon.

    • @kingdaniel3519
      @kingdaniel3519 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Manpreet Singh And at the same time diesel fuel was hovering around $4.85-$5 per gallon. You also gloss over the fact that purchasing and maintaining a diesel is more expensive than a comparable gas engine. Personally, I like diesels, I just think the advantage is wasted in a 1500 or compact truck like the Frontier or Colorado/Canyon. This engine would've been great in the 80s or 90s but not when compared to today's trucks. Sure, it has enough torque to pull like there's no tomorrow, but it's slow as masalas! It lacks the power to move out of it's own way.

    • @SkeldZ06
      @SkeldZ06 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Daniel Bell How is it wasted in a 1/2 ton truck but it's ok in a small Volkswagen where diesels also get great mileage? The U.S. is just behind the curve on this issue and it shows in these comment sections. The amount of resistance even when faced with incredible results in a video directly above the comment section is unbelievable.

    • @mpsangha
      @mpsangha 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're towing 9k lbs up the Ike gauntlet everyday then obviously this isn't the truck for you. But that's what everyone is basing their opinions off of. For an everyday truck you'll be saving a lot more moolah and it has enough grunt to get out of its own way. If you wanna be winning drag races and not saving money, then obviously this isn't the truck for you. I'm still waiting for the day ford comes out with a half ton diesel, the fan boys will be out in full force on that one.

    How anybody could ever have thought that a turbocharged V6 gas engine has better fuel economy or towing capability than a V6 diesel engine.
    The eco diesel is a great engine and THE logical engine choice for a half ton truck.
    The perversity is that in some states of the US diesel costs more than gas. I may be wrong but I guess you won't find that anywhere in the (western) world but in the US.

    • @ebsell
      @ebsell 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @airtexaco
      @airtexaco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right, there is such a bias against diesel in North America. Anywhere else in the world it is diesel, not batteries. I also believe the bias is rooted in something other than logic...

    • @YouThana
      @YouThana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The taxes make most of the fuel price. You in the U.S. are blessed compared to many European countries. However, Diesel fuel contains more energy, which is why vehicles consume a bit less compared to gas. It would be logical if Diesel was more expensive everywhere but the governments wants the transportation sector and the economy to be competitive so taxes are kept within a reasonable range.

    • @airtexaco
      @airtexaco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am sorry, but I disagree. In the US it is environmental concerns (that I disagree with) that drive the price as well as taxes. Here they made diesel a low sulfer content diesel which is less efficient and does not lubricate as well causing the engine to have more issues and a shorter life. If these people were really concerned about what they say, there would be a bigger push for diesel because of efficiency and that the engines last so long. The fact that they hang their collective hats on batteries without allowing more power plants to be built tells me their aim is not to save anything but to curb our freedoms, one of which is free and easy travel.

    • @YouThana
      @YouThana 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Slowing down traffic and increasing cost of travel is happening for various reasons (i also heavily disagree). In Germany and several other countries Diesel cars are a dying breed. Recently cities have been allowed to ban diesels because of micro particles and NOx emissions. In the last decade there had been a crusade against emissions and the VW scandal was the pinnacle of all this. The technology was heading into a dead end and innovations for the last decade were only made to control the emissions. I am sort of indecisive because i also think Diesels have their reason to exist but on the other hand the production cost went out of hand, manufacturers cheated on their customers and all this only run overweight SUVs for reasonable cost within cities. This is madness. In Trucks and HD vehicles Diesels have their reason but within normal cars, no They are too much and despite all filtering and catalytic converter improvements they simply stink really bad. Also Diesels are no fun to drive in normal cars.

    If you're buying a diesel, buy a big one don't buy these little wimpy things... Parts are going to be very expensive for these ecodiesels... You're better off buying a gasoline engine.. Diesel is for big hauls and when something goes wrong in a diesel you could be looking at a major repair bill especially if this has a DPF.. Over heating will be a big problem.

    Here's the deal with this truck that no one seems to get or realize. With the very high price of diesel there is no mpg king with this truck, you're actually paying way more to operate this truck than the biggest most powerful gas engine truck. 2. The biggest most powerful gas engine truck pulls more and has more horse power and torque. 3. This truck does not have the pull weight of a half ton truck with the 5.7 hemi and does not have the higher horsepower and torque. 4. This truck can only carry and pull loads that a regular gas engine half ton truck can carry and haul, when actually the half ton truck does it better and can carry and haul/pull heavier weights and loads. So there is absolutely no payoff or gain with this truck whatsoever. You're actually spending way more money to operate this truck than a half ton gas engine truck, and the half ton gas engine truck does it better and can haul and pull more weight and is far cheaper to operate. There is absolutely no payoff with or to operate this truck and you can't haul or pull as much and are paying far more to operate it. Stupid actually and stupid idea to even produce a truck like this.

      mattheginger On the power side of the test. This truck could barely make it up the Ike with the same weight the Ecoboost F150 had. The few dollars it's saves you in fuel isn't worth having a truck that can't pull. It's a nice truck for hauling a motorcycle or something else on a small scale but definitely not a work truck like the F-150. Dodge needs to use the v8 Cummins motor for this truck in my opinion. I've considered purchasing this truck but thank God for these test because now i know better. Thanks FLT.

    Well stated on the regeneration cycle of diesels. I recently purchased a "15 Passat TDI and its highway runs were averaging 45 mpg. Then I noticed a drop to 39 mpg for a couple of days and then right back to 45 mpg. It has since leveled out, only regenerating towards the end of my tank (within 100 miles of a fillup). I know this because I have an EGT gauge that goes towards 1100 degrees (indicating a regen cycle) vs the normal 600 F - 800 F. This does affect the mileage, at least in my case of about 7 mpg. On longer trips, I never see the regen cycle kick in....possibly because the car has been running for a long time and has passively burned off the soot and thats where I see mpgs in the mid to high 50s. Is TFL's test intentionally misleading? I would tend not to think so, just not as complete as it could be.

    It is hard to compare 2wd vs 4wd trucks in mpg 4x4 it isn't just weight it's rotating mass too. I believe the Ford 2.7 Ecoboost in the 2wd configuration gets 26 mpg as tested by the EPA. Either way the Ecodiesel gets awesome mileage.

      With diesel being roughly $.50 more per gallon nationally, and the diesel premium being $4,000 over a base engine, and with the higher cost of maintenance and repairs, it's not more economical. The Ford 2.7L ecoboost returns only a few MPG less, but costs significantly less and tows better than the Ecodiesel. If you're towing or trying to save money, there's no argument to be made for the Ecodiesel.

    For those that want real world numbers, 2014 Ram ecodiesel 2wd quad cab, ~17500 mi., towing some (1-2%) but mostly highway commute (70%): 9.6 cents/mi. fuel costs, 1/2 cent/mi. DEF (Blue DEF), 2 cents/mi. oil change (dealer cost).
    So 12 cents/mi. actual consumable cost.

    It doesn't matter what this truck and engine can do just about every body seems to hate on this combo except for people that actually own one lol, Go figure!!!
    This is not a fast truck yes i know, diesel is more expensive to maintain yes i know, diesel is more expensive to buy in most areas yes i know. What most people don't seem to get is this is a truck speed is irrelevant as long as it reaches speed limit fully loaded while still getting really good fuel millage which this thing will do for you and its proven by countless amount of owners on you tube, when empty this truck does even better as far as i know this is the only truck that had it's EPA adjusted to give it higher numbers. In city it does suffer from more rejen cycles and having trouble warming up in the morning how ever it still beats the gas versions under same conditions of city driving. Hating on this engine makes no sense saying its has under developed internals with no sources to back it up because this people ( www.trucktrend.com/how-to/expert-advice/1208dp-banks-vm-motori-630t-v6-diesel-engine/ ) feel 100% other wise they call it great!!! As far as i'm concerned this was a better option than 5L Cummins for this truck reason is 5L cummins is just to much for half ton its more of a 3/4 ton engine which could of been nice in 2500Ram. Please remember this is just half ton if you wont work horse in half tone range there is a guy keeping great records of his ecodiesel used as work horse every day his videos are all over youtube just look him up ( mopar ecodiesel ) . So unless you know something I don't so far this engine while being in north america has pretty damn good track record ( this engine first arrived in Jeep about 2 years or so before Ram ) .
    If you wont fun fast truck yes this is not it but neither is Frod F150 with either 2.7 or 3.5 ecoboost in it but Ford Raptor is and you know it. This truck deserves credit where credit is due next step for 1500 Ram is keep this engine work out a tune to up the power (options to up the power already available aftermarket look up chipXpress) and go with aluminium body like Ford, needles to say Ford got same path but go with small diesel over there ecoboost engines because when you do use them as work trucks there millage still blows same as it did with V8's so than whats the point.

    Impressive. However I think its a draw and largely dependent on driving style.
    If you consider that diesel is typically 20-30% more expensive than regular unleaded. Then the Ram 1500 really got an equivalent 27.5 mpg. Still very impressive.
    However the ram looses its luster when you factor in that you have to pay so much more to get that diesel option. I think from a cost of ownership point of view its a draw. But that can change base don rebates and incentives that any one manufacture may offer.
    I know i could be happy driving either.

    I am genuinely impressed with the Ecodiesel engine, I know a guy with a Grand Cherokee and he loves it. The only real complaint he had was tha it sucked DEF like crazy. Apparently he was told that he could go 8,000 miles in a tank but he has been filling up in less than 4,000. Now all they need to do is make the ecodiesel engine more affordable. A 4WD Lone Star 1500 costs 3 grand more than a HEMI equipped equivalent.

    Perfect, that's what I wanted to know. Your video answer my question. Thank you! I would love to see a video showing the MPG (empty) different with identical (or close to it) trucks with diesel engines but with different rear-axle ratios. Diesels have so much torque that I'm thinking the rear-end ratio may not be as much of a factor in empty (not loaded) MPG. I'm comfortable saying that a higher revving rear-end would get better MPG while towing..., or is it these days???

    I've never really been a Ram fanboy, but that's actually fairly impressive with 50% better MPG than the gasoline rivals. However, the problem is diesel fuel is significantly more expensive than gasoline, so it almost doesn't matter when it comes to money out of your wallet.

    Rolling resistance of the tires makes a huge difference too. I get crazy good fuel mileage in my 1998 Navigator with the Continental CrossContact LX20 Ecos and pretty much normal mileage with the Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor Pros.
    Same vehicle, same driver, same wheels, same size tire, just different rubber compound and tread pattern.

    wow, those actual fuel consumption figures are impressive compared to the Ford 2.7L. I would expect the comparison to be even more impressive if they were each towing.
    yes the diesel option cost more but you'll get that cost back when you sell. compare the price of a 2000 ram diesel vs 2000 ram gas, that are similar in condition (plus factor in the longevity of a diesel engine, if you have driven a diesel with 300,000 miles and a gas engine with 300,000 miles, you'll know what I'm talking about)
    fuel economy is important to everyone's bottom line whether its a personal one or a business one.

    Impressive numbers - currently diesel is cheaper in my area here in ontario - aprx 12c/L, I have not been watching diesel at all so I don't know the long term trend in this region.
    I just got back from a camping trip and met a guy that is has the new 3.0ED and says he is getting a 15L/100 km towing his camper - looked like a 5500lb to 6000lb rig - so that seems pretty good to me. I am in the market and was very impressed with Fords 2.7 but decided to hold off with rumors of the new 10 speed tranny. I wonder if they bring out the 2.7 with a new 10speed how it will match up with the 3.0ED? Why cant someone combine all the new techs -- ED with aluminum body? Is it that hard or is about having “their own thing to market”!! Things change so much now that you don't look to keep something more the 5yrs if you own and leasing pushing at 2 to 3yrs.
    Wondering if the ED will run on biodiesel?
    Thanks to all the folks that inputted without anger issues - cheers Patrick

    Well the Eco diesel is a much more expensive engine option than the 2.7l. The Eco cost an additional $4,270 and the fords 2.7 adds $795. Also the dodge requires a higher trim than the ford. And like so many others have said diesels cost more to maintain and diesel costs more than gas. In my opinion the fords 2.7l is the better engine.

    • @masonspohn125

      Justin E but the 2.7 liter eco boost isn't a simple gas engine

    • @thisjustin878
      @thisjustin878 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mason Spohn Well, I didn't say anything about the Ecoboost.. With that being mentioned, It is still much simpler than a modern diesel. There are no complicated after-treatment systems or regeneration cycles to deal with, nor are you forced to deal with the issues of ULSD's low lubricity. Turbocharged gas engines aren't simple either, but they're still simpler than any of today's diesels. But ultimately, I think tried and true N/A V8 engines are still superior. They may not have the power on paper, but they still have their advantages without any of the complexities or higher costs.
