Having four of the working scale model traction engines, that I bought, not made myself, I can seriously appreciate the work, time and resources that went into this! Beautiful engine! First class workmanship!!
Hey Chuck, Joe Pieczynski directed all to your video. I have to say that your job of building this is second to none. It is extraordinary and well done. Dave A
A piece of art Chuck, I like the old steam power. As a boy we used an case steam tractor for the thrashing machine flat belt drive everything seemed so big to this water boy. Thank you for sharing & Joe for the referral.
Hi Chuck, this was an insperation for me to try and build a modified myfordboy traction engine. My favorite part of the video is that you didn't rush thru the scenes. I could actually appreciate the multitude of hours of time you put into machining this. I wish more builders would display there creations like this. Thanks Dave
I am amazed at the detail and the precision! A true work of art and functional as well. I was happy when you wrote me to let me know that my videos helped you with your shop work but I am flabbergasted to see what you have accomplished! Very very nice!!! Marc
Hey Chuck. That is one fine piece of work. Any craftsman would be proud to say they made that. Get yourself a nice walnut riser and a glass box to put over it. How many hours do you have invested in that? The detail is just beautiful. I have to ask if the steam pressure guage actually works ? Congratulations.
Hey Joe, Thanks for the kind words. Yes the gauge works 0-120psi range. I didn't actually make it though, it came from a model supplier in UK. As far as hours invested, I don't really ave a clue. I finished the boiler in Oct. 2015.
This thing is gorgeus! A true masterpiece. I would've loved to follow the build. Please, please don't stop making things like this and also don't stop uploading.
Absolutely incredible. Watched Joe's video on creating the front emblem and as impressed as he seemed with your build, I just had to check it out. Bravo, Sir!
Thank you sir. Recognition from your teachers is always a good thing. Still waiting on John Mills to chime in, he's responsible for getting me hooked on the idea of building one of these things. I'm planing a second video of it running on steam and driving around, just haven't had a chance to get it done. Thanks Again
Thanks for the comment Adam. If it hadn't been for guys like you on YT i never would have gotten through it. It would not be complete without you giving it the Abom OK. Thanks Again
Bravo! Just beautiful. I am trying to finish a Minnie traction engine which is also 1 inch scale. The original builder made everything from raw stock as well. Struggling with just a few of the bits that go into the model gives me an appreciation of the extreme skill and determination you have deployed to make this masterpiece and get it to run. Thank you for sharing the video which is an additional motivation for me to raise my game and get Minnie making smoke.
Chuck Tipton The model is mostly complete, boiler, wheels, valve gear etc & looks finished, but there are many small bits that are not complete, piston, piston rod, blower valve & exhaust installation, throttle lever, bracket, gauges,... Lots of little stuff that doesn't make for interesting video & I am a beginner in many aspects of this work such that my learning & fumbling are not so interesting to experts & not so useful to folk who are also learning. I doubt whether I could do this with out what I am learning off folk who have the skills I don't have & who share them via TH-cam. If I can complete it or become faster & more useful with my lathe & mill I will post some stuff then. Regards,
Hi Chuck, Joe P sent me over, I wonder is Mr. Pete has seen this video? Really nice work you must be very proud of this piece. Kindest regards from Bonnie Scotland. PS I will mention this link to 'Doublebost'' I am sure he will appreciate this work.
Nice work! For certain MyfordBoy would be pleased with your model as he recently did a series of videos where he made a similar model. If you have not seen Myfordboy's channel you should check it out as you would definitely enjoy it. Thanks for sharing your work. Peace!
Is the boiler for real with tubes and a firebox? You guys that work with miniatures are amazing, I could never build something with a magnifying glass and tweezers.
Hey Brian, Thanks for the question. The boiler is made of copper and silver soldered. I tested it to 130 psi but the safety valve is currently see at 40 psi. It has two 3/4" fire tubes with butane gas burners. It just takes a few minutes to boil up a head of steam. I plan on making another video of the engine running on steam and driving around. I'm waiting on the weather, it was in the 20's here last night. Yes a lot of tiny stuff, I use an optivisor and needle nose pliers. LOL
Chuck Tipton I hear ya about the weather it was 22 this morning here in Kentucky when i started work on my barn/shop. Hard to believe it was 70 on Firday!
Beautiful! So if you decide to do another would you consider doing a series so that us amateurs can follow along and perhaps attempt to follow your lead and make something in our shops that isn't an accessory for our lathe or milling machine, lol? in all seriousness I would love to attempt something like this but not without guidance, and humbly so, something a bit simpler. Thanks Joe for the recommendation. Regards.
Thanks for your comment. I didn't think I could do it myself until I got into it. I'm not a machinist, I'm a luthier used to working in wood. I got into the machinist stuff to enhance my guitar business. So get yourself a set of drawings and go for it.
I'm an airline pilot, so certainly outside of my area of expertise. That said I would never turn away from a challenge..... a set of drawings it is then, we'll see how it goes; would you suggest a source for the drawings. Cheers.
If you like the English style engine go to Mazitrak website, they're in UK and were very helpful to me. If you do a google search for traction engine plans there are a couple places you can download plans for a US style Case engine. I have a set of those drawings but decided to do the English Burrell engine instead.
Very nice, Chuck. I hesitate to use the word "cute", but that pretty much describes it. Your attention to detail is commendable. How many hours do you have into it? Tom
A beautiful model Chuck. I'm sure you're proud of it. Makes me embarrassed to say that I've been working at "Minnie" , on and off, for over 40 years and two different countries. I'm now determined to try and get her finished before I leave this tormented world. "Minnie" is in the same 1" scale so would probably emerge looking very similar to your creation. Have you ever "steamed" your engine or is it strictly on compressed air? I hope to fire mine using propane or something similar at least to see if the boiler works but it'll probably turn into an air engine eventually. Regards from Chatham in Canada's banana belt.
Yes sir, it has two Accucraft poker burners fueled with Butane. As soon as the weather gives us a break I'm going to shoot another video so keep checking. Thanks
Hi mr tipton I was send here by the same fellow who send all the other people Nice how you were inspired by a 18 year old guy (19 now i believe) Could you Please build another one and post the video's here cause i think a lot of people are interested haha Also Nice how all the master machinist left their comment on your huge little project Best wishes from the netherlands Ps dont let adam touch iT i dont think iT can handle the torgue
Yes sir it is rubber, I ordered a roll of it from Maxitrak UK. Just cut the length specified in the drawings, glue the ends with thick CA glue and bond to the rims with epoxy. Thanks for the question.
I've always wanted to buy a model steam engine this size but I've been reluctant to because I don't have any experience with steam engines and have little knowledge about them, always been fascinated with them though. How much would a traction engine this size cost?
Yes they do work. One is set at 50psi. the other is set at a little over that for redundancy. They are manufactured units I bought and modified the outward appearance to look more realistic. The spring and pressure arm on top is strictly for looks. Look closely at the top of the valves and you will see a circle of tiny vent holes. I milled little dimples in the center of each one and turned the crowns from brass. Thanks for the question.
Just left Chucks shop, getting some guitar work finished. Had the privilege of seeing steam engine up close, and getting detailed info. about the work that went into building this master piece. What a gentleman, and craftsman. Thanks, Chuck, and keep up the great work that you do. Dennis
Chuck--Absolutely beautiful, what craftsman you are!
Thank you Mr. Peterson. Yours was the first YT channel I watched and I have learned so much. Again Thanks
Having four of the working scale model traction engines, that I bought, not made myself, I can seriously appreciate the work, time and resources that went into this! Beautiful engine! First class workmanship!!
That is one fine example of a professional machinist.
Hi Chuck, was sent by Joe. Nothing I can say that's not already commented. Just wonderful, amazing and beautiful.
That Chuck is exquisite - wonderful work and a joy to see. There must be many 100s of hours gone into that, with much TLC. Congratulations sir. :)

Another Joe P referral... what an exceptional piece of work. Much respect for the skills that culminated in this work.
Stunning craftsmanship. I can only dream to reach such a skill level, thanks for sharing!
Just amazing Chuck. The engine is so tight and runs so well. ....Dave
I was apprehensive the first time I tried to run it, I just knew I'd spent a year building a whatnot, when it kicked over I was so relieved.
I am amazed at the detail and the precision! A true work of art and functional as well. I was happy when you wrote me to let me know that my videos helped you with your shop work but I am flabbergasted to see what you have accomplished! Very very nice!!! Marc
Thanks Marc, I never would have been able to make heads or tails out of the drawings from England without you, not to mention gear cutting.
Wow, beautiful work. The smoothness at low RPMs is amazing and not easy to accomplish. Excellent execution of a lengthy project.
Wonderful craftsmanship ,attention to detail is priceless

What an excellent machine, a remarkable example of your consumate skills, I hope you are proud of yourself.
Hey Chuck. Hope you are well. When are we going to get a look at this beauty moving across the floor?
Absolutely beautiful. Your work is an inspiration to those of us in the hobby machinist community. Thanks for making the video.
wope
Fantastic engine with impeccable craftsmanship!!!!
Thank you sir! I'll let you know when I upload the next installment, I just haven't had the chance to get it done.
This thing is gorgeus! A true masterpiece. I would've loved to follow the build.
Please, please don't stop making things like this and also don't stop uploading.
Beautiful craftsmanship, Chuck. Thanks for sharing.
Joe sent me also. All I can say is BEAUTIFUL!
Joe sent me. What a beautiful work! You show great craftsmanship and attention to detail. How 'bout a brief shop tour someday?
Absolutely incredible. Watched Joe's video on creating the front emblem and as impressed as he seemed with your build, I just had to check it out. Bravo, Sir!
Just got through watching Joe Pie make the emblem. GREAT job!
Beautiful engine. Well built piece of art. Runs amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Hey Chuck,
Sweet little engine! Pretty cool what you can achieve through the internet these days.
All the best,
Tom

Recommend to have a look by Joe, very very impressive, beautiful example of great skill and workmanship
Beautiful job.
Thanks Man, I watch you all the time.
Very cool. I can tell you put a lot of work into this. Do you have any videos of the build?

I love the worksmanship!
This is beautiful.
Hey Chuck,
Any chance of getting some more uploads from you? This one got me hooked.
Cheers!
Awesome build Chuck!
Great work man. I came here from Joe Piecynskis channel.

Wow What a Gem,Thank you for sharing.
Great build!!
Thanks for chiming in Chuck, it means a lot to hear from the people i've always admired.

I just realized I misspelled Maxitrak.
Thanks for the info and encouragement.... I'll get onto it. Cheers.
Joe sent me, Great work Chuck she's a beauty TFS "thanks for sharing" G :)

AWESOME WORK!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome job Sir'. Maybe one day!!
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
Very nice, Chuck.
I hesitate to use the word "cute", but that pretty much describes it. Your attention to detail is commendable. How many hours do you have into it?
Tom
Too many! I worker on it for over a year. Don't have any idea of how many hours, just worked on it when I could.
Beautiful !
proper job, great work.
That is unbelievable great job
Absolutely gorgeous!
Very nice. Recommended by Joe Pie.
Robert from Wisconsin
Pure art!
Great JOB!
Lovely engine! Ive got a 1 inch gauge Minnie coal fired traction engine
Fire it up! Where's the steam
Wow incredible
Nice job!! you are the man!!
Fantastic! p.s. Joe sent me!
Amazing !

I've run it on steam several times, but didn't shoot any video of it. I use propane butane mix made for camping stoves.
excellent work on that little steamer. have you had a fire in it?
Yes sir, it has two Accucraft poker burners fueled with Butane. As soon as the weather gives us a break I'm going to shoot another video so keep checking. Thanks
Wow stunning.
Nice engine. Is it run in well to ru nthat slow?
hello where did you get the whistle
I got it from Macc Models, they have an E-bay store. Thanks for the question
Good God, thats nice! Wow!
Thanks Brad.
Hi mr tipton
I was send here by the same fellow who send all the other people
Nice how you were inspired by a 18 year old guy (19 now i believe)
Could you Please build another one and post the video's here cause i think a lot of people are interested haha
Also Nice how all the master machinist left their comment on your huge little project
Best wishes from the netherlands
Ps dont let adam touch iT i dont think iT can handle the torgue
Excellent!! Is that rubber on the main wheels? How did you get it on, if it is rubber? I'll be looking for the trial run...
Yes sir it is rubber, I ordered a roll of it from Maxitrak UK. Just cut the length specified in the drawings, glue the ends with thick CA glue and bond to the rims with epoxy. Thanks for the question.
This is useful thanks.
awesome!!
mind bending!!!!!!!
very nice.
I've always wanted to buy a model steam engine this size but I've been reluctant to because I don't have any experience with steam engines and have little knowledge about them, always been fascinated with them though. How much would a traction engine this size cost?
Look at Mamod, pretty straight forward to use, great fun and you can buy one used for around £100 UK.
Could I enquire about the thread size of your whistle valve and where you were able to get it from?
It's 1/4 40 I bought the whistle from Macc Models, in England.
Chuck Tipton thank you kindly sir much appreciated that’s exactly what size I’m after I’ll go make some enquiries
do those safety valves on the cylinder, do they work ?
Yes they do work. One is set at 50psi. the other is set at a little over that for redundancy. They are manufactured units I bought and modified the outward appearance to look more realistic. The spring and pressure arm on top is strictly for looks. Look closely at the top of the valves and you will see a circle of tiny vent holes.
