It's there to catch the inevitable drips from the smoke box. It may be smoke tight, but it's unlikely to be water tight.

@@WestHuntspillMES ive put a deposit on a durham & north Yorkshire at berrybrook, going to view it on monday 😃 bit small so they are also going to show me their fowler ploughing engine, both are 2" but fowler is a lot bigger

Lovely machnery. The long flue dose that help with draw through the boiler and is that a extra that u have desgined or are they like that
The chimney extension is a length of Aluminium log burner flu. Most engines in this scale use them to draw the fire when lighting from cold

Enjoying the technology of steam and it does a fantastic job of it ....(brilliant piece of art)
It’s a 1/3rd scale model of a Garrett general purpose engine. The majority were used for threshing and general contracting.

Ours look plain but did the job but you Brits take pride in your engine and make them all pretty and such, but there's nothing wrong with that!! I just recieved a 2" allchin from silvercreastmodels in England and I must say that I'm still blown away and cannot believe that I own such a gorgeous engine,.just beutiful, no words...

@@WestHuntspillMES sounds a good plan! Do you recommend that method for a 1 inch traction engine and a 3.5 inch loco?
@@mattseymour8637 Coal firing a traction engine at 1" scale (loco at 3.5" scale) is more about 'authenticity' than practicality. The size of the lumps of coal is extremely important and difficult to get just right. Gas or even spirit (meths) can raise steam just as well without all the mess of coal and ash. I've seen 2" vertical boiler steam lorries run on gas very successfully. Even my 3" Aveling & Porter has a small fire hole, so many lumps of coal just won't go through without modification - hitting with a lump hammer!

For some reason it always starts well into the video, but you can easily drag the video back to the start if you're a masochist!

@@amanofmanyparts9120 thanks for the advice very useful. So do you recommend smaller pieces like grain size?
@Matt Seymour. Definitely not. That size will either put the fire out or burn way too hot. There's no middle ground. I think the correct size is called 'peanut' and is pretty much available only from miniature steam suppliers. Almost no main coal suppliers bother with it as the market is tiny.

You buy a set of drawings and start with the component you think you can make. The move onto the next one
