    How nice to see someone who has the same resources to do work as I do. In other words, an old Transit, a concrete driveway, a jack, some spanners and most important, a Big Hammer! No air conditioned fully equipped workshop with heater, ramps, coffee machine, a shiny two year old van that needs no work, background music and dancing girls, as other videos seem to imply.

    I use an old clean mastic tube to refill the diff, fill it full of oil and power it in, also you need to do a blog on resetting the diff clearances while the cover is off. Really enjoy these .Well done.

    On a stiff bolt, you should attract the spanner, hold it firm in place, & then tap the end of the spanner with your palm & it should shock them loose, like a low impact wrench would
    Good video.
    Blue threadlocker on the bolts would be a good move.

    Hi mate great videos,and tutorials, perfect as just bought a 1990 MK2 or MK3 2.5di camper van, doesn't have the banana manifold,so not sure, anyway I bought the van and did notice a metallic clanking sound either from the diff or prop,when coming on or off the powe,the seller told me it was the differential backlash setting that needs adjusting and wouldnt be an issue I took his word on this,any ideas?

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey, thank you! Hope you will find them useful 😊 it could be the diff backlash. If you rotated the propshaft left and right by the differential you will be able to feel if there is excessive free play. If there’s too much it might make a knocking sound when being heavy with the clutch moving off. It could also be the propshaft center bearings. If the rubber is perished (very common) the prop moves around and can cause a knocking sound also. Have a video about it on the channel.

    Hello good information, but could you not suck out the oil with a vacuum pump?

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, of course you can. I don’t have a vac pump and would rather make sure all of the oil has drained out. I’ve found with those pumps that they struggle to get the last bit of oil out. Usually the dirtiest oil is at the bottom of the sump... this is a longer method but I’ve checked the state of the diff, changed all of the oil and replaced the gasket 👍🏼

    Would an oil change on a diff reduce noise.?

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would say if the diff is worn it will be difficult to stop the whining noise completely. An oil change should definitely help reduce the noise.

    • @TurnersWorkshop97

    hello what is the differential art nr ? and whats the name of the motor? and the gear box name? i have and mk4 but most parts look the same thx /fredd

    • @TurnersWorkshop97
      @TurnersWorkshop97  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fred, not sure on a part number but there are two different type axels. The ‘H’ type has 5 wheel studs. The ‘G’ type has 6 studs. I have a mk5 transit from 1998 with the g type axel. If you look on your vin plate in the passenger footwell this will also give you the diff ratio providing it’s the original. I think it’s box 7, it will have a letter in.
      B N L G J K M
      3.91 4.11 4.56 4.63 5.14 5.83 4.18
      Basically a lower diff ratio will give you a faster cruising speed at lower rpm. A higher diff ratio will give you a faster acceleration but lower top end speed.
      This information will also be on a small tag bolted to the diff cover but it can be quite hard to read if it’s rusty. If you research the vin plate it will give you all the information about your axel name and type etc. Hope this helps with what you’re looking for.
