  • In this video I show how you can fix the footpeg issue on the KTM 390 Adventure with new footpegs from Black Dog Cycle Works. The footpegs are much larger, drop down the boot surface 1/2" and level the footpegs out. These new footpegs look like a work of art and function even better. The installation of each peg took about five minutes and it was something I should have done months ago.

    Matt.. Thank you for the hot tip with these pegs. I contacted Black Dog and ordered a set for my KTM 390 Adventure! Just installed today! I am impressed. Fast shipping, Transparent communication, Quick install (15 minutes for both!!!! .. 5 minutes was to find my tools!) Took a quick ride and felt so much better! These are a must do upgrade for anyone whom is 6' ish. Spot on with your video! Thank you! #blackdogcycleworks #KTM390Adventure.

      Same here sir, not ordered one yet. But had to discuss with community. Being 5.8" and little more inseam height. My knees pain like hell after riding for 300+ km. What was your experience parallel to this? Would be helpful for decision. 😄

    Nice video. Considering this has been an issue with the KTM since it was launched, I'm surprised KTM have not fixed this themselves. Still, good to know there are options out there.

    Very good Matt. Black Dog is a great outfit and has all kinds of cool stuff for the KTM's. I'm very amazed at how well this bike has worked out for you. It seems to have opened up a whole new confidence in your riding pleasure when off the pavement.

      This bike certainly has made riding offroad so much better. When I rode my R1200GS on White Rim I was nervous and anxious nearly the entire time. I never feel that way on this bike. I am confident I can get myself out of trouble. I knew that wasn't true on the GS.

    Thank you so much buddy! I bought mine used without any kind of intruction. For the install, It's pretty straight forward BUT I wasn't able to figure how to install the spring: I was trying to use the spring hole as the oem spring do. I soon realized that that's wasn,t going to happen, I did a little research and you gave me in your vid the exact thing I was missing. So, again, thanks alot!

      You will live the bike. SW Motech also makes a footpeg for this bike if you cant get the BDCW peg.

  • @Hutchie2112
    @Hutchie2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just bought the sw-motech evo footpeg kit, that has different pegs, flattens them , and lets you position the pegs up to 15mm lower and/or up to 7.5mm forward or back. This video has been invaluable in confirming that it's just a matter of pulling that cotter pin to remove the stock pegs. There are hero blobs in the sw-motech kit, and that will do as an alternative to your centring pin that you used, so hopefully I won't be screaming and kicking the bike in frustration. Thanks.

  • @bedmac2

    Going to flat pegs was my first modification. In my case I went with the Rival Components' offering. While flat they are not lowered (UPDATE: I checked on the Rival site and they indicate they lower by 3/8"). In my case I felt the proper adjustment of the brake pedal was limited somewhat given the new geometry, and for my solution I went with a two-level brake step plate from Alt Rider, (SW-Motech has a nice one now as well). Very helpful when standing. The lower level of the Black Dog pegs may mitigate the need for that somewhat.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, with the BDCW's pegs there is no need for a brake riser. That pegs feel so much better. I didnt know about the pegs you went with. I might have used them, but the BDCW pegs are pretty good.

    • @bedmac2
      @bedmac2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@advmatt the Rival Components pegs look pretty much the same in terms of size and shape. The Rival site says they lower 3/8" so I was mistaken about that. Run about $200 last I looked. I'm sure either are acceptable options; definitely an improvement!

    Thanks for your vids. I have been watching most all your 390 content because I'm really trying to find a bike I can unicorn for me. Your unicorn video was funny but the exhaust being exposed was an editing error :) I know you have had the big GS so you have seen the best of the best for road. How would you rate the 390 for long hwy? I want something I can travel several states on. I was really thinking the 690 was the ticket but have been told it's really a bad hwy bike. Thinking if the 390 can do the off-road it may work. Thanks for your thoughts

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The exhaust was hot and I needed to get the filming done. I do long rides on the 390 Adv with problems. I am actually in Baja right now on my way to La Paz. It cruises really well down the road and is comfortable for me. With an Atlas throttle lock you are good to go. I have done 800 miles in 3 days. The bike perfectly suited to do this.

    I mostly ride on the street. I get that you would want the pegs level for standing in the dirt, but does leveling the pegs have any impact on your street riding position? Does it change the position or comfort of your positioning when seated for long periods? Access to break and shift? It is an adventure bike, so we are trying to optimize for both on and off-road.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The gear shift lever and rear brake position relative to the pegs changed. I adjusted the gear shift down a bit. The brake lever doesnt have any adjustment. While riding on the road I didnt notice any significant difference in comfort. The rear brake was easier to engage. Keep in mind I am used to riding bikes with level pegs. The improved position for standing was the most notable difference.

    I'm still researching this: which pegs (Black Dog, Pivot, etc) lower the foot peg position the most for us tall riders?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The BDCW'S pegs drop 1/2". SW-Motech makes a peg that has multiple positions which can also drop 1/2". I dont know about any others.

    Matt do you have to push your handlebars back now? When standing I always feel like I’m falling forward when standing I’m 5-11

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I dont think so, my position on the bike felt much more neutral and I didnt feel like I was bending over to reach the bars. The neutral feeling was immediate and noticeable, for me anyway.

    Hi Matt - in this video, what tank bag are you using & why did you switch to the Tusk tank bag?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      The first tank bag I put on this bike was the Tusk tank bag you have seen. I had to return it under warranty. While I was waiting for it to be returned I picked up a Cortech tank bag at a descent price because it had been discontinued. I needed this bag for my trip to Baja and the Tusk bag had not been returned yet. I like how the Tusk bag fits on the tank better than the Cortech bag so I switched back.

    • @advmatt

    I'm thinking about buying a 390 adventure but have heard that many owners are having a lot of issues with poor factory QC where bolts are cross threaded and/or partially striped right from the factory. What has your experience been? TIA

    • @advmatt

      That has not been my experience. Some of the bolts had excessive lock tight making them really hard to remove but overall, I haven't had any quality issues. I am only one bike owner, but for me, the experience has been good.
