They're flimsy on purpose, it helps the skier slow down in 3-4 seconds instead of 0,3 seconds - The longer you take to slow down, the less it will hurt, that's why Marc Márquez was uninjured a few years ago when he bailed at like over 300kph

The "crooked" poles are to maximize pushing power while going downhill. Also, you start when you're 6-7 doing events on much much easier slopes. Search "junior alpine skiing" and you'll see the difference very easily.
