- Switzerland's Urs Kryenbuehl crashed at the finish line of the men's World Cup downhill in Kitzbuhel, Austria on Friday, January 22, 2021 and had to be removed by helicopter. The 26-year-old man from Schwyz suffered a concussion, a broken collarbone and torn internal and cruciate ligaments in his right knee.

the fact that the "crowd noises" have been digitally added due to the race being held with no fans makes the "silence" part quite artificial.

@@14Lenka11 Well he ain't wrong in the sense that this year, because of Covid, no audience members were allowed, the only people at the finish line are other skiers and teams plus officials and slope helpers, medics. The applause that was heard was played from the speakers and as you could hear, someone actually physically pressed the 'stop' button after the crash, I guess in order not to make it disrespectful. While I have no doubt out of those at the finish line everyone gasped and held their breath in shock, we couldn't actually hear their magnitude of 'applause to silence'. It was the artificial/playback applause into the real silence.
For anyone that's never been on a ski/board holiday, just falling over on the snow at 20mph can hurt!

He was going down with such great style! It was scary to see him lose control in his last jump. Looks like he tried to correct.

A lot of people don’t realize how devastating a crash on the ‘flat’ can be; your body is fighting gravity. You are literally being pulled into the hill.
Crashes on flat landing are the worst :(
Folks who have never experienced these speeds have no idea the strength and athleticism it takes to overcome the forces involved in this crash. One reason I place Lindsey Vonn as one of the 3 greatest alpine racers of all time - men or women.

Damn, what a blazing run until it looked like the air resistance caught the top of his skis and pulled him forward. His head neck took the brunt of that fall. I hope that the brain and neck injuries are not what they appear to be. Speedy recovery.

The perverse upside of his crash is that he did technically finish the race, which of itself is considered an accomplishment on the most feared, dangerous downhill course in the world. Hope he recovers enough in body and spirit to return to ski racing next season.

If I'm not mistaken, you have to finish the race with all your equipment intact and I would imagine, on your feet.

I've even watched the Hahnenkamm-Race live on TV! The Moment, after I saw his crash happen, there were a few things, that straight went through my head, like "Is he okay" "Has anything pretty serious happened to him" and "I hope, he'll get well again as quick as possible" But as I saw him sit up for a moment or two, then lay down again, I was being calmed at least a little bit... I was so happy to see Urs being brought to the nearest hospital

He had magnificent speed on a very icy run, I could hear the ice scraping as he skied, sure hope he will be OK, he fell hard.
He was skiing today(23.1.2022.) at Kitzbuhel downhill and he did it great, nice job.

There he is, possibly bleeding out from a severed artery and nobody has a plan to respond. But the rescue people sure look great, wherever they are.
I don't know if y'all understand how insane it is to be going 130+km/h outside of a vehicle... And then flying and having to stay perfectly balanced. One slight miscue with the tips of your skis too high and you're going over backwards. Too far forwards and this happens.
Fastest I've gone is 90km/h and I was truly terrified.

Anyone who watched the race could see that a lot of racers had problems on the last jump, including Beat Feuz.
I would direct you to a certain personage in the organisation who's name I will not say here, who insists this final jump only gets bigger and has 'aledgedly' been overheard to say 'if they can't jump it then they can't ski'...

There was a small mistake I think at around 1:41, prior to the horrible accident. I am a total amateur in ski and I know that muscles can give up anytime...brain is still working but muscles cannot do what I want if they are tired. I hope he will recover soon!!
I'd had never realized the extreme dangerousness of supergee until I got back on my ski again and went to the Italian Alps.. Once you realize how dangerous this can be on those steep slopes even for a recreational skier at very low speeds and then you see those daredevil riding such slopes designed to push the limits, with their speed well over 100km.h on an icy, uneven surface, fighting with high G-forces, then you realize how much nuts this kind of sport is.. Each fall on the Streif slope can mean the end of the skiers carrier and disability for the rest of their life..

Concussion is a word often used to describe a wide ranging spectrum of brain injuries. Let's hope its a minor 'brain injury.'

The racers had been commenting earlier in the week about the last roll being too large ~ they were getting 80 meters of air. Course officials did nothing.
they did something after the 1st training as well as after thr 2nd training, but they couldn antizipate that the speed would get that high on race day
Course officials trimmed down the last jump before the race. So in that regard u are incorrect.

As sad as it is but seeing the listed injuries makes me believe that that man's career is over...most athletes don't fully recover from band ruptures and all that stuff...and especially not at his age. Sad story if you think about all this effort and training he put in to reach this level, but who knows, maybe we will see him back on the slopes soon

Downhill, super G and giant slalom are ordinary ski trip on mountains but inside course lines highly risky if you fall you're screwed.

When these things happen: Don't other athletes think like maybe I should quit this sport? It looks so dangerous, every race I'm watching is like extreme adrenaline, only from watching. It's a miracle that nobody died since 1994.

@@teecee4574 Probably after reading a bit I guess its the professional athletes will to win and maybe even some kind of adrenaline addiction. They describe it as an unbelievable feeling to ski down these mountains. It is also said that fast and risky car driving is also a thing among ski racers. They might love and want more of this powerful feeling of adrenaline and all the other hormones being released.
To me downhill skiers are the toughest sportsatlethes in the whole world. Yes, they try to make this sport safer at any chance, but when ever an accident occurs the reality is that your body has to take the force of stopping from 90kmh- 145kmh within seconds. Broken bones, career ending injurys and even death are always a part of it.

yes believe me many only get back in the starting gate trying to convince themselves its ok to do it. once on the race track all thoughts are extinguished and all your training race training are engaged and your focus is only what you see ahead your heart and adrenaline are at maximum + and your hearing is subdued almost completely and it goes into what feels like slow motion and suddenly your at the finish hopefully...... you as a person are in a altered reality once you push out of that starting gate at this level of competition.

No. He tipped his tips down too early. At 90mph, drag is a huge force on the skis. The air resistance pulled him forward. And there is no 90mph tailwind.
@@01nmuskier Nope. I watched this live in Europe dude. There were lots of wind gusts around the last jump. Many ski teams complained about this on Saturday and the FIS decided to reduce the height of the last jump on the second Downhill to make it safer and for skiers to be less time in the air and less prone to be pushed forward by the wind. Nothing to do with ski tips. wtf.

There’s always this possibility when you ‘play with fire’ we will all fall whilst skiing. At 87 miles is definitely asking for more trouble, and even with his excellent skills, it’s a possibility. He’s going very well now.

I agree, way too much speed for the landing.
The speed on that specific day on the jump was more than 5km/h more than the days before or the race day after. That just makes a huge difference in air time. And they already took away of the jump the night before. But someone always has to be the blame.
Nobody wants to see such a massive jump towards the finish especially when nobody is there. That was stupid and irresponsible by the OK.

he didn't miss any gates and passed the finish line. obviously he lost a lot of time, but he was ranked 25/30 (with 2 dropping out of the race)

If im correct, you have to pass the finish line with atleast one ski on your foot. He passed it with no ski on his foot.
@@bastianrathgeber4880 No. He was classified 26th and got points. You don't need to cross the finish line with any ski, maybe the source of the confusion is cycling, where you do need to cross the line with the bike

There should be a system similar to F1, where at any part of the track, you can have professionals at the scene within 10 seconds.
At 147 km per h, you got The balls to make that jump.
at 147 you have no other choice, you are hurled into the jump

Back in the day there were no helicopter. No groomed hard consistent "highway slopes" and the ski equipment was weak and unstable compared to today. The skis were not as flexible and the boots not as stiff, nor was the bindings as safe as today. If you watch Kitzbuhel races from the 70's and early to mid 80's more racers crashed than completed the race. Downhill skiing has become much safer.
He knew instantly as he went off the roller that he was screwed. Nothing you can do when you are too far forward off a jump. Terrible way to fall.

the level of safety for downhill compétition is worthy of RAF pilots during second world war, unacceptable.

there is literally nearly nothing they could do to make it more safer nowadays. All skiers wear airbags. they have an three layers of fences in each spot. the piste is in perfect condition, they have always an helicopter at the spot to bring them as fast as possible in the next hospital and so on... You should watch this competition 30 years age where they only had like one wood fence in each curve. Its just a dangerous sport in general like motorsport or mma but from an organizer perspective you can't make this sport 100% safe.

Downhill and professional skiing in general has Murphy's Law written all over it.
With crashes, but also with terrible wear and tear of the knees.
I think I am not exaggerating when I say professional skiing is dangerous.

@@georgesaurouel9652 Yes. But compare the speed you can move on on solid ground and with motorized vehicles, to the speeds you can move on ice. Given the spot he was in, they were fast. Paramedics usually stay close to the long diagonal immediately before (the Hausbergkante) because it's a very bumpy spot where crashes often happen due to the speed and lateral steepness of the course (see Pietro Vitalini Kitzbuhel crash to have an idea)
