I'm past this problem already, figured it myself. But if I had seen your video back in the time, I'd have spent so much less frustrating time trying to ski properly. This is probably one of the best videos here on the topic of transitioning from snowplough to parallel, seriously. Kudos.
I had one ski instructor explain that the inside knee has to point in the direction you want to turn, in effect, that the knee “leads” the turn. This helped enormously, although has not totally cured me. 😅
This video saved my skiing holiday! I had week one skiing in 1989, week two in 1990, week 3 in 1991, week 4 in December 2024 (after several trips to indoor snow and dry slopes in the run up to the 2024 trip}. I just forgot about my inner ski. It hadn't been an issue indoors or on dry slope. The steep, mixed terrain in resort was causing me problems. Luckily, week 4 has weeks 5, 6 and 7 bolted on! I don't go home until 17th January so plenty of time to practice and get better! Thanks for the excellent videos!
Best video I've seen on this topic. I've always wondered why this keeps happening to me while turning and never knew the science behind it. Now I can finally work on fixing it. Thank you so much!
I'm finally going back to skiing in the alps with my family and I'm watching some vidoes so I can remember the techniques 😭😭 These types of vidoes are a GAMECHANGER. thank you 🙏🙏
Perfect tutorial after first day of skiing in the season! I had all problems you mentioned in the video. I bet TH-cam is spying on me!😄 can't wait to try these tips tomorrow!
I do all four of these things. Thank you for providing the clarity that my awkward inner ski is causing me the problems. I always practise side slipping but I don’t focus on matching big toe downhill with uphill little toe. I can’t wait to ski again and try working on this
Great video to show how to convert from snow plow to beginner parallel. Getting ready to teach my grandson so I have been sending him some videos to watch before we go. Good one here.
I would love to see a video of you skiing in correct form for a full minute. The snippets of you doing that are so helpful but are interrupted by what we are doing wrong which is instructional and good, but let us see you do what we should be doing for a longer duration. Your ski videos are the best available.
Good video showing how not to drag that ski. Getting ready to teach my grandson to ski during Christmas and have been sending him a few videos to watch before we get on the slopes. Good one here.
Excellent refresher for someone returning to ski after a long break! Looking forward to using these tips while my son and I are skiing in the Superior National Forest this winter. Thank you for the tips!
Hey former racer here - I think #3, lean forward should really be number 1, since it makes _everything else_ so much easier. If you’re not leaning forward, it’s hard to have the right weight distribution on the ski, causing the tail drag or to appropriately turn with your hips. Also UGH I know we have to teach beginners to turn their whole bodies across the slope, but it makes me cringe so much seeing it after all the drills to unlearn that and keep my body facing straight down the mountain and only turning with my hips and legs! 😂 Otherwise great video! Super good advice for beginners.
Great video! I have been struggling with this for a while now and it’s so frustrating I can turn to the right no problem but when it comes to turning to the left my left legs always gets stuck. I think it’s because I’m right side dominant so I’m more comfortable moving my right leg, but idk. I can’t wait to try your tips next time I go ski. Crossing my fingers that I improve.
You're describing the exact problem I'm having, I'm stuck at this. Luckily, I have two more days of skiing to try these tips 👌🏼 Or maybe I'll hire you at the start of next season 😁👍🏼
What the instructor is not saying is that you have to get even ( equal body weight well before you initiate the turn.. then it becomes much easier to transfer all weight on uphill ski tbat will initiate the turn.
I've always had a strong side & weak side turn. If I am not thinking of my turns, I will drag the back of the inside edge of my right ski. I assumed it was from an old injury where I don't have much side to side flex. I could never really snowplow because I couldn't get my right ski on the inside edge. However, watching your video I'm guessing it's more weight & balance. I go back up in Feb, so I'll have to work on that.
I'm starting to get my skis more parallel, but can sometimes revert back to a wedge. I'm noticing I naturally put a lot of weight on my downhill ski, but I am really struggling with is the uphill ski. I try to dig in, but a lot of times I feel like it is just along for the ride. The downhill leg is doing all the work. Maybe your tip #4 is my hurdle to overcome. I am not sure if my upper body is driving my motions. I have been told I'm still very stiff as I ski. Side slipping sounds like a good exercise to try. Thanks for the helpful video!
Inner ski is the one that at one moment,.when d going side way, is the leg that is between the lleg that is outside (longer-extended) that is locks on the slope..
THIS! This is exactly what I’m struggling with. I was trying to explain it to my lifelong excellent skier husband, and he didn’t know what I was talking about. But this is it. Thank you for the tips!
the problem im having on a indoor carpet is getting my inside ski on edge, i can get the outside ski on edge fairly easily, and get the inside ski parallel, but somehow cant make the step to push that knee in so that the inside ski edges. any tips for that?
Do you mean lifting and tapping the inner ski as a balance exercise? If so then yep, I like using that one too, as it’s a bit easier than extended balancing on one ski. Thank!
@@Avoriazskischool totally! manage slope progression, teach stepping to rotate orientation. but kinda depends on goal for student and how often they get to ski.
@@howwey530 Nice. In my experience, it's not realistic to skip teaching beginners a wedge, since there are obstacles or traffic all over the place. The key is to progress from the wedge and into parallal ASAP, before it becomes too ingrained. I guess in an empty resort with perfect slope progression, beginners could go straight to parallel, but In the real world, they're gonna need to be able to slow and stop before they can then progress to turns and parallel turns. Thats why some schools still teach wedging.
So funny that TH-cam knows exactly where I'm at with skiing and how to fix it!! Thank you so much
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Same :)
same for me haha
Best video I have seen on how to get better at skiing, this guy needs more credit.
I can confirm that you actually know the problems we face while trying to parallel ski. Thanks
He's definitely (not) an instructor, but HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S TALKING ABOUT..
AND ALL OF US UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS SAYING..
Side slipping is a great exercise to practise skidding the skis together - which translates well into making parallel turns

The best video on this topic on TH-cam
I have to make a trip to France just to get some lessons from this guy. The way he explains it, plain and simple just makes it click

This is so useful, I recognise myself in all of these scenarios!! Watching on repeat before I head to the Alps on Sunday! Thanks for great content :)

It’s great to summarize the common mistakes when parallel skiing along with the corresponding suggestions.
That’s the idea - I hope it’s helpful. Thanks for watching

The arrows pointing up/down on the legs for weight distribution was excellent.

How'd it go?
you know the problems exactly . thanks for the instructions.
Once I got the hang of turning, I never really cared much about fixing the inner ski, but it is the thing I want to fix right off the bat this year.
Really good advice can’t wait for the snow here in Banff!!
Thanks for watching
I'm so excited to try this out, thank you!

Great videos really well explained, in Avoriaz first week of Feb
Thanks Chris! Have an awesome time in Feb 🙌🏼
Very helpful video :)
Great video!
congrats! A great video!
Thank you!
Excellent video!
Two thumbs up 👍
I dont know how YT rec works but its some mindreading 😂, today was my first day after at least 5 years with no skiing, and guess what happened 😮
Excellent! I've subscribed.
Thanks Phillip, welcome to the channel
This is gold!

The downhill ski DOES carry the most part of your weight, like when you are standing sideways on a stair... there is no way having it differently 😊
Thank you very much for the lesson. Could you please let me know where is the inner ski? Is outer ski towards downhill and inner ski towards uphill?😊
Inner ski is the one that at one moment,.when d
going side way, is the leg that is between the lleg that is outside (longer-extended) that is locks on the slope..
The inner ski is the one on the inside of the turn/curve. He explains in other videos.
Exactly me, thanks.
god tier video
Let me know your thoughts folks - have you ever struggled with the awkward inner ski? Do you know any other ways to fix it?
I've learned to ski quickly with ice skating and snowboarding experience. What's missing here is keeping the boots closer together in my opinion
THIS! This is exactly what I’m struggling with. I was trying to explain it to my lifelong excellent skier husband, and he didn’t know what I was talking about. But this is it. Thank you for the tips!
Shrinking the size of the snowplow as you initiate the turn will help you shift to parallell
Thank you for finally giving a name/diagnosis to my illness!
the problem im having on a indoor carpet is getting my inside ski on edge, i can get the outside ski on edge fairly easily, and get the inside ski parallel, but somehow cant make the step to push that knee in so that the inside ski edges. any tips for that?
find a real snow or artificial; it's easier and less expensive for the carpet.. 👀
how abt the tap tap tap to build balance then single tap to full weight transfer?
Do you mean lifting and tapping the inner ski as a balance exercise? If so then yep, I like using that one too, as it’s a bit easier than extended balancing on one ski. Thank!
@@Avoriazskischool exactly. but maybe we should be asking why some schools still teach wedging?
