  • In this video, I provide a full review and overview of my E39 M5. I discuss the mods I've done and plan on doing, the things I love and dislike, and point out some of the known mechanical issues of the M5.

Not all E39 M5's had the bigger subwoofers, It was called an M audio upgrade from the original manufacturer options. I have a 2001 m5 with the M audio upgrade, this is how I know. Love the ceramic coat, looks great.

Great video! I would go even further and say the E39 M5 is one of the best CARS of all time! I have an E46 M3 on my channel which isn’t too shabby either.

Look for Fixels to fix the pixels. My friend does the repairs. Send him the bad one and he’ll send you a repaired cluster.

The first version of chrome rings for the brake ducts were Home Depot sink drain chrome trim rings. A common early mod.

The sound does not matter. The fact that it looks stock is what still makes the car special. I love how you can put a switch to make it loud or not. I recently bought a 540i. I want to do the same thing! Wouldn’t you think they make a kit for it??

Reach out to Badlanz HPE. Charles. can guide you through what to get if you take some pictures of where you want to put the cutout(s)

Awesome car man. The only thing visually that really annoys me about the e39 M5 is the wing mirrors. I wish they kept the M5 wing mirrors the shape as all the other e39 models. To me those smaller more round wing mirrors look perfect on the e46 M3, but on the e39 M5, they look too small blobby and sporty for the more classy and luxurious e39.

The brake ducts are blocked because the m5 got the 2 piece-brakedisks (but I think not in the US). BMW decided there is no need for extra cooling then. At a 540i the ducts are open.

Back in the day it was tuners that talked shit about their rice burners. Nowadays its a whole bunch of people that know nothing about Bmw and Mercs giving advice. "it was just very stock ....and I was disappointed"...Wtf. Least he did some stainless steel brake lines.

Leave the wood trim. Class and sportiness goes hand in hand with this beast.

Interesting. I think the carbon fibre trim he mentioned would be horrible. But I like the stock shadow-chrome aluminium trim.

The second washer tank is for high speed cruising on the autobahn, the first bigger one is for low speeds.

theres no need to revmatch when downshifting. especially in the city. TO bearing will wear out sooner and It´ll improve your mileage. Joisey!

The thing about older M cars is that they put more stress on their tires than modern ones. They can have the softer suspension and the body roll because the tires are supposed to handle the stress of a corner and grip. It’s a cool way of designing luxury sedans that I think is gone now. Most of them are pretty stiff now.

Timing chain guides not so much of an issue on E39 M5’s as it was on 540i’s. 540i’s run hotter and bake the guides into brittleness over time.
I own both an E46 M3 and E39 M5 myself and don’t find myself with huge repair bills with either as long as maintenance done on time. My M3 actually feels weak after driving the M5 - so much more usable torque in the M5!

Overall a great video....540i m-sport owner and on the verge of M5. over 20 BMW's owned, though. the high # of Sponsor mentions was kind of annoying...not enough to dislike, but still, C'mon man!! Thanks for the review!

400hp is plenty in the street and not really usable in city freeways when you got to watch out for other people sitting on the road. The E39 M5 is in the sweet spot for reliability and style.

the sound keeps switching from blowing my speakers out to, i can't hear it at all. i tried it with my hand glued to the volume control but it's not worth the aggravation.

Sorry Doug! Thanks for the feedback. Working on getting the sound right- very aware that it’s pretty bad in this video. I was trying out a new mic and was running into a lot of issues. I will def make sure the sound is better next time!
