  • The E39 is undoubtedly one of the best BMWs to wear the M5 badge and is arguably in the running for best performance sedan ever made, regardless of automaker. Personally, I love how simple BMW's approached the E39. Body style: Sedan. Transmission: Manual. Special Packages: None. What this M5 lacks in options is made up for with an incredibly engaging driving experience. But with price-tags ranging from $70-$75,000 for the E39 brand new, it's clear that this tailored athlete demanded attention from owners' wallets. Fast forward nearly 2 decades and depreciation has effectively run its course with the third gen M5 and values are now starting to slowly climb back up. With that said, there are a ton of factors that affect the value of this generation of the M5, so today's video is intended to analyze how these factors have influenced recent, published sale history on the automotive auction site Bring a Trailer.
Check out our E39 (non-M5) videos:
    • Introducing the E39 LS...
    • First Drive in the INS...
    • Here's What's WRONG wi...
To summarize, the most valuable E39 M5s will be the lower mileage, late model cars that have seen exceptional care, coupled with an interesting color combo. As far as exterior colors are concerned, the reds, blues, green, and even the white M5s proved to be the most desirable when looking at our data set. In other words, M5s painted anything other than the greys, silvers, or blacks had higher average sales prices. Similarly, the standard black interior trended lower in the average sales price ranking than its more vibrant counterparts (Imola Red, Le Mans Blue, Caramel, Silverstone). M5s fitted with Dinan's signature series upgrades were much more likely to see inflated sales prices than the standard E39, which is to be expected considering that some owners reported $70,000 install bills for the top of the line Dinan S3 package.
Our BaT data also supports the notion that reported damage is not likely to ruin the E39's value, so long as the necessary repairs were handled comprehensively and everything else about the car shows legitimate care. Along that same vein, M5s with 150,000+ miles did not sell for pennies on the dollar if they were well maintained, meaning that there won't be huge discounts to take advantage of just because the car has been healthily driven.
I think the sweet spot for the E39 is in the $20-$30,000 range. You'll quickly realize why these cars are so well respected and be glad that you picked one up, but you have to be prepared to move quickly because you're competing with the likes of specialty dealers such as Enthusiast Auto Group. From my perspective, it is the near perfect E39 M5s with low miles, a desirable color combo, and the top tier Dinan Packages that are seeing considerable appreciation. I'd argue that there will still be "attainable" cars for awhile, they just might require a little more work and attention than the pristine examples.

Very comprehensive analysis and well put together. I wish this video was around when I bought my 2000 Avus Blue M5! One thing worth noting is that there were slight mechanical changes to the engine during the 2001 facelift year. From E39Source.com (the absolute most comprehensive information about these cars anywhere):
"Pre 10/1999 production cars lacked set screws in the VANOS solenoid covers that kept the solenoids from vibrating against the covers, which made noise and could damage the solenoids. Cars made after 10/1999 had four set screws there to keep the solenoids captive. S62s produced from 12/1/2000 incorporate a VANOS accumulator shutoff valve which prevents oil bleed off of the high-pressure chamber after the engine is switched off. This alleviates the startup rattle that is caused by the helical gears running dry and rattling until proper oil pressure is restored by the running oil pump. "
You'll find that most people that have done their homework will de-value the 2000 and earlier model cars not only because of the lack of facelift features, but because of these engine changes. The 2000 and earlier models are known to burn more oil than later models, which also tends to de-value them a bit. In the end, pre-facelift cars are just as reliable as any others, and personally I have no regrets with my purchase nearly 4 years ago now.

Really appreciate you adding this Ruben. I'll pin this comment as I definitely feel that others will find this info helpful.
Your comment is a perfect example of why I admire the BMW community, especially with respect to the older M car enthusiasts. Owners are truly passionate about their vehicles and are willing to share the knowledge they've acquired for the betterment of others. I've visited E39source.com for research related to my 540, and you're exactly right that it's an incredible resource.
Thanks for watching and contributing useful information. Keep enjoying your M5!!

The E39 generation is special to me and has an old school feel compared to the super sedans of today which are all about modes and electronic overrides.
I spent a year looking for the right car at the right price. Initially, I looked at 2000 model in Titanium Silver/Black Sport with 139,000 miles and 3 + owners near for $15k near me in the DC area. It has recently had suspension refresh but it wasn’t the car for me.
Then I posted a Want to Buy ad on M5Board. I found a one owner 2001 M5 in Jet Black/Caramel Heritage with 81,000 miles in Shreveport, Louisiana. Every service record was available, but the owner was in his late 70s had lost his sight. The front seats and door handle needed a re-dye, the instrument cluster is missing pixels, and a rear quarter panel had been repainted. But in every other way it was sorted. The cup holders even work. All for $18k.
It’s a ton of car for that money. Extremely refined and an absolute highway champ. In Sport mode, it gives me all the goosebumps.
I have struggled with feeling guilty about driving it, but cars were meant to be driven. Plus, whenever I drive something else, I just crave getting back behind the wheel of the M5. Values are rising but I don’t think I’ll ever sell mine unless I’m forced to. Great video!

You found a gem. These cars are quite reliable too esp if you do your own maintenance. I bought mine with a salvage title 7yrs ago, and I dailyd it close to 6yrs. Currently restoring it, but I can't wait to get back in it. 250K miles and still pushing strong. You've barely broken in that S62B50 with those low miles. Good luck and hope you do content with it and enjoy driving it as it was designed to.

I'm very glad that i snatched what is probably The Cheapest running M5 in America, 2 years ago for... $3,000
2000 Red Imola on full leather Caramel interior with 133K miles.
Obviously at that price it wasn't a perfect example. It needed it's battery replaced, luckily it was under warranty. The hydraulics (brakes/clutch) needed to be bled and a break part (can't remember which) replaced.
Peeling clear coat, which will be addressed this year, via a full repaint.
The seats and armrest has seen better days, so it will need reconditioning and re-dye.
Wheels were in good shape, but sadly the full tread tires were dry rotted, so l had them replaced.
P.O. installed an ugly aftermarket touch screen radio, that broke. That's getting yanked out in a favor of an Android O.E. clone.
My only regret was backing out on a 2003 Carbon Black on Silverstone interior with 108K miles for $5,500 (later sold on eBay for $16,200) 2 years prior to my current imola... FROM THE SAME NEIGHBORHOOD 😂
Funnier than that, is that talking about the one that got away, led to me getting a tip about my current Imola 😎

    • @bradcomis1066

That list is tiny for a $3,000 car- of ANY kind. You probably can't even get a Corolla for that price. Not sure how you managed to find that deal, but it does seem to be the deal of the century. Shit, you could get it re-sprayed, have the engine rebuilt, replace the interior and still be under the sale price of a nice clean M5.

Excellent analysis. I recently purchased my fathers 2000 Titanium Silver E39 M5 Dinan Stage 2. He was the original owner, now the car has around 85k miles, and aside from a door ding and a couple of scrapes on the front bumper (lowering the car with the Dinan kit didn't help...) you'd never know the car has that many miles. Waiting to get some paint correction done, that way I can clear-bra the car. Absolutely beautiful machine. Luckily the car was made just after the VANOS changes in 10/99. It's very rare to see any other E39 M5's on the road, I'm happy to see their popularity is increasing.

AMAZING build quality, clean welds and bends. prev owner must have gotten it closer to when the car was new.. i dont think Tubi made/sold many kits; which is why they probably stopped producing them.. i think M5 owners were so blown away @ the time by the car's factory performance, they didnt feel a need to blow $3k on a catback

Great analysis and delivery. One note about the interior colors and relationships with price:
The sport colored interiors typically align with the exterior color (e.g. lemans blue, imola red) so it's not necessarily that those interiors are more desirable, it's that the exterior colors were more desirable.
Contextually speaking no one really seems to be a fan of the more adventurous blue or red sport interiors.

That is a really interesting idea! It would be interesting to see how different sales venues effect the value of a vehicle. Not sure how to get that information exactly. BaT pricing is pretty insane in many cases as you are advertising your vehicle to all of North America rather than just within a 100km radius. There have been a few vehicles (2-door 5-spd Jeep Cherokee and a E46 wagon 5-spd) I've wanted to buy lately that have been effected by the idea that the seller would rather sell on BaT and cash in big time rather than sell locally.

You can have an e39 with 80,000 miles on it that skipped services all oem and needing a lot of new parts replaced just to have the engine potentially fail at 160,000 or you can have my e39 with 330,000 that's had all its services and has already had a lot of parts replaced, runs perfectly and will likely run for 600,000 when the engine fails. but the the e39 with 80,000 is worth way more than mine?

Good question, and the short answer is yes. There are some issues with the build that need to be addressed but have been put on the back burner for the time being. Next video will be an update on the car because it’s long overdue.

How about a recent fad converting e39 wagons into M5 wagons? I currently own 01 525 171k miles with 19” Racing Dynamics wheels and thinking about selling it. Although looking at the market it’s not really clear what’s happening. Some converted wagons are sold for $80k

    • @TireKickers

I like that idea, definitely worth doing some research and seeing what I can come up with. I stumbled across a couple of these M5 wagons when I was making this video and I have to admit that they're frigin sweet.

Overlanding has been around. Real overlanding is exploring thousands of miles over a period of at least a week. All these new "determined campers" are just doing day trips or full weekends at best. Ignorantly labeling it overlanding.

That's fair, but I think it depends on how well the car has been taken care of. An M5 that sells for

Good video- totally ruined by supersonic speed commentary. Why oh why do American commentators speak so damn fast. What are trying to prove ? That you’re the fastest talker? Slow down mate

    • @TireKickers
      @TireKickers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

That’s fair criticism, I’m still learning what makes a video “good” which is obviously subjective. My goal was to provide value without going down too many rabbit holes and wasting the viewer’s time, but if the pace needs to slow that’s definitely something I can work on

    • @UrbanSophistic

I wouldn’t change your flow. He obviously has a problem with American commentators at large. Good video, great analysis, and there is a pause button if needed.
