Grabbing a live stingray by the tail-bad idea!

- Coastal saltwater fishing out of Rockport, Texas at the mouth of Turtle Bayou. Looking for Redfish (aka Red Drum) but hooked into this angry little monster.
Texas bay fishing never seems to disappoint! Not what I was looking for but we had a pretty doggone good trip overall. Lots of spotted seatrout, enough redfish fillets from Estes Flats to last a couple months and beautiful weather. I'm not going to lie, there is nothing I would rather be doing than fishing on the Texas coast.

When you touched it's tail i started to yell in my mind
"DON'T DO IT DON'T DO IT DON'T DO IT"
Thats how I always throw them back in the water from the fishing pier. Grab their tail with plyers and toss them back over. Never an issue.

Best thing you can do mate, turn it on it's back, it will give up and calm down, makes it easier to remove the hook too

@@somejimmydude2121 Ive caught 1000s of them, some of them weighed over 200 pounds You definitely want to wear gloves. But there bite is harmless.when they bite down you have something to hold on to.

Grab it by the socket under its eyes. It's easier to carry and it doesn't hurt the stingray or make it feel endangered

Screw that. Put a rag on the tail and step on that sucker then yank out the hook with a pliers and use a paddle to launch it back in the water.
This video wasn't what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it none the less. It was cool to see it up close and to see what the barb looks like and where it's located on the tail. I happened upon your video when looking up info on Steve Irwin, and now I have a better understanding how a stingray could kill him. Side note: how bizarre was it to be expecting to see a fish on your line and seeing that bad boy? LOL
I won't speak for Fritz and texas, but I'll tell you my experience here in Florida.
It's not bizarre at all. Unfortunately you catch stingrays rather often. Again unfortunately I dont have the heart to cut the line and leave the hook in them as I've seen so many do. So like fritz here, I end up with a sketchy situation every time as I remove the hook. I've got got only 2 times out of the hundreds maybe thousands of rays I've caught and released.
Since you're curious I'll tell you this also. In freshwater the same thing happens but with turtles. And we have some mean turtles here. You catch a big old alligator snapper and while not as worrisome as a ray, they're no fun all the same. Cheers.

if you know how to deal with them its not bad at all. i remove the barb every time i catch them. i like to catch stingray but i usually fish off a pier. its always a spectacle and a lot of tourists like to come up and watch the action. they fight viciously hard! we always have to lower the drop net to hoist them back up where i briefly talk about the animal (i dont really know a whole lot i just like to share the facts i do know) show the barbs then remove them and toss the animal back over. its a lot of fun to catch and i make a lot of new friends doing it, both curious observers and other fishermen.
there is definitely an element of danger fishing for stingray and i think that is why a lot of people enjoy it so much.

What did you do with it? I hate tossing stuff I catch back in with the hook still in it. I wouldn't have clue how to get the hook out of that.
I use the alligator hook remover in the video and flip them onto their back. I step on the tail...
Hooks in Australia are plain steel they rust away in short time

I’d always keep a shovel in my boat. Get under them with it and sling them back in the water. Probably isn’t the nicest way to return them to the ocean but it works, lol

Caught many in florida. I stick thumb in one nostril and forefinger in the other. Squeeze down and pick them up. The Barb can not get your hand. Just keep away from body and throw them back.
