Give someone the bottle and say "bet you can't flip it" and then they try but half way through the bottle just leaves
That would be highly amusing so long as they don't get hurt...
It would be highly amusing not matter the physical condition of the person afterwards
And the cap Flies off hitting them in the face

So I did this exact experiment a couple years ago for my college physics class. Got a 95% grade on it too. But anyhow I experimented with flat coke, carbonated coke and plain tap water. Each was experimented with at both room temperature and heated to 140 degrees. 3 runs of each of those combinations. Lots of butane and bottles used lol. The goal was to find out if the reaction was caused by additives in the coke, the carbonation or purely temperature. I timed each run from the moment the bottle launched to when it landed back on the ground to gauge how much thrust there was and averaged all the times for each liquid/temperature category. I also put the butane into a separate container and then poured it into the coke bottle to minimize the time it had to change the temp of the liquid for better accuracy of the experiment. What I found was that the carbonation had virtually no effect on the explosiveness of the reaction but rather the temperature of the liquid was most responsible. Basically the greater the temperature difference between the liquid and the butane, the faster the butane boils and converts to gas.
How old were you?

That sounds like a very fun coursework.
I was thinking exactly this. Also very similar to the Mythbuster episode about coke and mentos. I think they came to the conclusion that one of the additives in coke was by far the most important factor that that reaction. But that is an entirely different chemical process.
The coke menthos trick is not chemical, its a nucleation process where tiny bumps in the menthos allows gas to release from the liquid.
Honestly, one of my favourite parts of these is 'Smart Dan' - the grenade lesson from way back was excellent.

That first one absolutely scandalised me. The expectation in my head was it would slowly take off like when people slam coke bottles down cap first. I didn't expect it to just delete itself in a frame.
This comment is perfect.
Same here, I was not expecting a lot..... and then when it just instantaneously left frame after Dan turned the bottle upside down. I was astonished. :O
Scandalized?
Something about Dan calling the 2L big bottle an “absolute zwihander” made me crack up
Because it IS an absolute Zweihänder. Try puring from it with one hand. The bottle is not rigid enough and will collaspse under its own weight. Forcing you to squeeze it, which pushed the liquid to both end, giving them even more weight.
@@ismirdochegal4804 exactly, though done right you can pour with one hand, but riskily so.

Question on test paper would be like:
How many liters of coke and can of butane would you need to go to the moon?
AJAZ ALY Why did you calculate this?
Wait
@@sock9107 lol
It depends are we launching from earth or from earth orbit. Because one is gonna be way more feasible and might actually be possible for a rich guy to do for fun. Say we start from a station orbiting at 25k miles from the surface. If we had a few thousand gallons we could probably hit the moon not orbit it we wouldn't be able to control fuel usage so we gotta go for an impact
I have a few engineering professors who have asked similar questions. The assumptions list that needs writing is half the page!

A note, as someone studying aircraft engines:
A venturi reduces pressure. The principle is that the venturi increases velocity and reduces pressure, creating a partial vacuum. Once the gas leaves the constricted area of the venturi, it returns to ambient pressure.
thank god someone else noticed that as well. it's a pretty common misconception i think.

LEARN BY DOING!!!
@@Icewind416 You cannot teach math unless you have language or linguistic communication, neither can you teach symbolic knowledge unless you can talk and agree to what will the symbols represent.
The question is wrongly phrased, as language, english or not, is the primary knowledge to everything else, once is the way to express ideas, to belong to a society and structure your thought process - mathematical or not.
So yes, languages (not that math isn’t one, but I you all know what I meant) are more important, though that doesn’t mean grammar or writting, but speaking language, purely, as the first body of knowledge everybody learns.
Plus, tons of people live without math - here in Brasil we have, unfortunately, many living surrounded by, but without comprehending it, and yet they all speak a language and, therefore, would be able to learn if there were schools for them.

Now why wouldn't you leave cap on and try different sized holes in cap as a nozzle?
the thrust wouldn't be as powerful when it is flipped. since it's coming through such a small hole
@@RoadToMadeira this is gonna be another "oh hey pls sub"
I'm assuming the bottle explodes with the lesser the size of the hole, as the gas expand rapidly and only little space to escape.
@Inmate_I I think it would go faster and for a longer period of time depending on size of nozzle. Maybe if if nozzle was too small it would blow up.. but that's why you experiment.
@@bwxmoto the pressure inside the bottle will increase until the cap can't handle it anymore and explodes as @Azer M has explained.

Back in the day we would have attempted it with a flame near the launch or with the cap on but that would almost certainly be demonitised these days. 😬

@@FanaticTentacle Demonitised also means the video doesn't get served in the same way. Way less people would find the video. It's also expensive to pay for all of the equipment, props, location fees, truck rentals and flights for Dan to come to the US. If the videos are unable to make money, we can't afford to shoot them, sadly.
@@theslowmoguys Okay thanks for the info. Still how about: shoot the bit, dont include it in the official vid and then just put it in the description?
Might try drilling gradually smaller holes in the cap. E.g. 1/4 inch, 3/16, 1/8 etc. Though going smaller than 1/16 might be getting close to explosive lol
This is what I was going to suggest.@@Handle_number_7
Venturi doesn't increase pressure, tho. It increases velocity
Up vote this for the masses
Came here to find and like this correction
Amen brother.
yes and moreover it _decreases_ the pressure in order that the velocity can increase
Technically, yes, a venturi reduces pressure at the narrow bit, but the overall effect of the nozzle is to increase the bottle pressure and hence the flow velocity. Consider both extremes. 1. you cut the end off the bottle, the coke & gas puff out the end with hardly any increase in pressure (unrestricted). 2. You leave the cap on, and trap the entire gas expansion, in which case you (probably) explode the bottle - very high pressure. 3. You remove the cap, the neck acts as a nozzle, the peak pressure will be somewhere between the two.
That big coke really got him good. He should have used sugarless coke.
I spent to much time rewinding and watching the launches in normal time. The way they vanish is like a special effect.
As fun as the experiments are, the reason I keep coming back is because of the glory of the Slo-Mo Dan Faces.
I'd like to see this done with a remote rig and an open flame. :D
