Started out as a great day trolling crankbaits. The bass are spawning, and I was in very shallow water.
Then I hooked into this channel cat. Things got ugly from there.
I've been "cut" by catfish before, but never directly stabbed this deep. The pain was excruciating and after a couple of minutes I lost use of my hand altogether.
I went to an urgent care clinic, where I showed signs of red streaking down my forearm, indicating infection had already moved to my blood. I had extreme weakness and couldn't make a fist or extend my fingers. They sent me to the Emergency Room.
At the ER they x-rayed and ultrasounded my hand, looking for any remaining barb. They found none.
Then they ran Poison Control protocol. Soak, flush, antibiotics. At this point, about 6 hours had passed, and the red lines were going away, and I could extend my hand.
The next day, I could extend my fingers all the way, and can now make a fist, but can't squeeze anything tight yet. There is no pain at the wound but a bad "arthritis" pain in all of the joints and knuckles when I extend or close my fingers.
I have an appointment with a hand specialist next week.
So what did I do wrong?
I held the fish correctly. He was possibly small enough I could have held him from his back, instead of belly, which does give you a slightly stronger grip, without their bellies in the way. And really the more firm of a grip you have on them, the more likely they are to submit and just let you remove the hook.
But I think the real reason is because I semi-horsed him in. I had been catching bass. I thought this was a rather large bass when I hooked him. It was only when I got him to the boat, that I could see he was a channel cat. I brought him in green and full of energy. Always a bad idea with fish that have the potential to inflict injury.
Gloves will be worn when handling these smallish channel cats from now on.
The big blues aren't nearly as dangerous. As they get bigger and older, their barbs dull, and aren't nearly so knifelike.
Literally had this happen to me yesterday. Little 5” hard head had to eat my shrimp lol. Needless to say he got me right on the tip on my finger. I got sweet revenge though using him as bait.
Literally just happened to me an hour ago. Probably 5 or 6 inch too, right in my thumb knuckle trying to flick him off the hook, hurt like a sumbitch for 20 mins

I got stung by a small catfish on my ring finger, it nearly severed a nerve. I almost passed out from the pain, got light headed, and slumped over my fishing chair. 4 weeks later went to a hand surgeon and he repaired the nerve, 5 months later and part of finger is still numb. People, dont be dumb like me!!! Be careful!

I wear a work glove and just grab it’s tail and let it hang there when holding it and use pliers to get hook out.

I had a similar situation on my middle finger. Worst pain of my life and it’s not close. I ended up passing out.
This happened to my brother and his reaction was “oh yeah you little fuck” *unholsters Glock .45 and blows it in half” 🤣

About 17 years ago i got one in the knee and developed blood poisoning overnight. Woke up in the worst pain of my life and couldn't move my leg. Had emergency surgery the next day and they said i almost lost my leg or could've even died, also took me about 4 months to walk on it again after physical therapy and had to pack a wound until it healed from the inside out.

This happened to me while kayak fishing, too. I caught a little channel catfish. After I got him off the hook I was showing it to my friend and it spazzed out and stabbed me between my thumb and index finger. I got really dizzy like I was gonna pass out. I kayaked to the nearest yard on the reservoir and luckily people were there. They drove my to my vehicle several miles away. It truly makes your hand useless for a good 10 minutes right after the impalement.

first and last time for me handling one today. Nothing happened, but definitely aint taking the risk just to get a few flicks anymore lol.

dont let these stories deter you from catfishing. but just be be careful handling those fish.if you buddy laughs at you let him laugh, but you could have the last laugh one day by out fishing him or her.and you will be pain free and doctor free.

Feel your pain. I had the barb of a cat stuck into the base of my thumb - with fish attached. I used the pliers to cut the fish off and went to the ER with the 1 inch barb embedded in my hand. Blue and purple streaks up my arm. The worst pain I've ever experienced (and I've broken bones). Hope you are doing fine. That was tough to watch.

The words “Aahhhhhh she-et” never felt so good. My best friends dad had a horrible scar on the top of his hand and I asked him what happen one day. He said “When I was younger a goddamn catfish stuck his fin straight through my hand.” He was a former Golden gloves boxer and and he said that catfish hurt him more than any man could ever wish to.
It is brutal pain, but I can assure you God didn't have anything to do with it.

I was wade fishing last year and had caught a channel cat. Right as I was about to grab it, it jumped out of the water towards my face. I blocked it and took a spike straight to the palm of my hand. I remember thinking that didn't hurt to bad, then about 10 seconds later the poison kicked in. If felt like a red hot poker pushing into my hand. My hand got super swollen. They are no joke.

If I was going to keep the catfish, I just cut the line and dropped them in the live well. Then re-hooked the line. Always have extra hooks ready and waiting. Lol

This happened to me. It pierced an artery between my thumb and forefinger, causing blood to spurt out with my pulse. Unreal pain. I was surf fishing and almost couldn't get back to shore.
It’s always the smaller ones that end up getting you too, them bullheads hurt like a son of a bleep too lol
I got barbed a catfish once and my friends dad taught me that if you get barbed rub the cut on its tail. The slime disinfects the cut
I heard the slim takes the pain away but didn't find out till I got home
Always wear gloves, always carry a first aid kit and before you try to remove the hook, let the catfish wear itself out a bit. I also don’t grip them this way when not wearing gloves. Just had this talk with my son the other day while fishing. Be calm, control the fish, don’t let it control you, and when in doubt use a pair of pliers.
The worst “finning” I ever experienced was when I landed a 20+ pound blue cat bank-fishing and was reaching down to take him out of the net. He suddenly bucked and drove one of his blunt pectorals straight into my left palm, where the spine broke off. I managed, through pain worse than I’d ever felt in my life, to unhook the bastard and release him safely. Then I drove myself to the ER, where I was treated to a nice insurance-paid surgery and a round of antibiotics. These days you’ll find me being a lot more careful…and wearing cut resistant gloves.

Just got nailed a few hours ago by a big hardhead. I had to pull as hard as I could to get it out of my hand. It was in about an inch. Super hard to pull out and very painful.
Just seen this for the first time. I feel the pain. Sent a jolt right up my arm. I know this is a couple years late, but hope you are all healed up.
I had this happen to be and the pectoral spine snapped off in my finger. You should have seen the look on the surgeons face when I told him what he was removing from my finger. But yeah, I had to go to a plastic surgeon to get it removed.
Happens that quick. I'm like DUCK that hurts. Just had that happen to me this past Saturday between thumb and forefinger but it went in 2 inches and stuck after rolling 2 times. So DUCK I know how you feel ....

Medicated Neosporin and inject it into the wound is how I handle almost all slices and punctures. I do not wash the wound out either. That's what an immune system is for. I just inject the Neosporin and put a band aid over it to keep the stuff in. There have been times I should have gotten stitches and once I could smell my own flesh rotting. had a quadcopter prop cut a vein. Deal is, Each morning and evening I just wipe off the old stuff and apply fresh Neo and a bandaid. I do not trust doctors, the financial raping is always worse than the wound.
Yup, first mistake was picking it up. I just don't these days, I use my pliers to yank the hook without ever having touched the fish. Of I absolutely have too...and I can't think of a reason where'd I'd have to but suppose one comes up...I'd damn sure be using a towel. If he's done swallowed the hook. I'm cutting the line. Eventually the hook will rust away. If it don't, well fuck it bc that's not happening to me.
Im a retired Doc. I know it sounds crazy, but my brother and i always rub the fish over the cut and get the slime on it. The pain goes away fairly soon.
I dropped a little 1 footer and stupidly tried to catch it. Punctured the palm of my hand right dead center whole spine went in. Now I use a thick glove, and lip them if possible.

Just had this happen but it got stuck and twisted and I was all alone in the dark trying to get it out my hand while it flops around and gets deeper I tried pulling it out that did not help then I got my knife slither off with my mouth was not easy tried cutting the fin off that didn't help but somehow the fish flopped enough that it came free now I'm wondering if I should go to ER

my hand got stabbed by a catfish last time i went fishing, their was a lot of blood but i wasn't in any kind of pain like that. i mean yeah it hurt like getting stabbed but not debilitating are some venomous? i was also drinking so maybe i didnt notice the pain.
Been there a few times..usually the belly grab is a safer hold, but they seem to often get me on the release. A baseball pitch release is now my go to technique

moral of the story dont hold any catfish bye the head because it will hurt you unless its a small catfish but dont jold those big ones bye the head cause it might poke you

I took one of their barbs through my hand 3 weeks ago. Lucky enough to be up on my tetanus shot and weathered the storm! Worst sting I've ever felt!
Inshore Louisiana fishing, last few years we have been catching a lot of freshwater cats in Shell Beach following opening the spillway during high Mississippi River water previously. I refuse to allow any cat, saltwater or fresh, enter kayak or hover over my legs. If I keep the freshwater cats I remove the barbs before dropping them into my cooler. Instant excruciating pain just had this happen to me. Cut the barb off the fish and pulled it out of my hand my whole hand was numb for a couple hours but I kept fishing

I was younger, dumber, cockier when i grabbed for the stringer of large Blue Cats i had gathered to show off, forgetting that i had put a smaller on as well. Well i grabbed it like i was carrying a barrel, wrapped my hands around it and sunk in that dagger right in the center where yours went .. Same type of deal, screwed me up for months after.
I had one that got his side fin right thru my hand, i lifted my hand with the fish hanging from it. Then ripped it out and the wound would not close for like a whole day

Personally. I keep em, and eat em. so I just grab the needle nose pliers and break their spines off. One at a time. Catfish is so darn good.

I have caught many catfish in my life and don't like them, but have never been stung either. I hope it never happens and will probably be much more cautious in the future. I hold them the same way. I guess I have been lucky. Maybe I'll take the wire cutters to his barbs in the future and cut them off before I try to remove the hook.
I'm glad this never happened to me when I was a kid and didn't know anything about them but would catch them by accident in my grandpa's pond. Worst I got from one was putting my thumb in it's mouth to pick it up and it chomped down so hard it felt like a hammer blow.

If a saltwater catfish spears you good, it will ruin your day. It's even worse when you have to pull a whole embedded barb out with pliers. Their spines are basically 3 mini stingray spines. Best thing to do is soak in hot water, it turns into a big wasp sting.
I was bank fishing at a stocked park pond today. I found a chartreus jig on the ground. I tied it on and cast it later for fun. Caught a catfish as soon as it hit the bottom. I was not having fun getting the hook out. It was too small to grab like in these videos. I found this video because I was looking for advice.

I use thick leather gloves when handling the catfish. Some people even had their fingers removed because of infection.
