    I've heard of Ivor since I came across the show on TH-cam years ago even though I'm from America which is mostly dominated by the Thomas franchise. I do think the Ivor film is going to come out as a response to not just Paddington Bear, but also the recent film adaptation of the German kids train novel, "Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver" (2018) which featured a small steam locomotive named "Emma".

    Good video mate :) I never knew there had been plans for a film version! I wonder if Postgate had been inspired by the Titfield Thunderbolt somewhat to create this rural charm effect?
    I always used to wonder what the point of Jones The Steam was seeing as Ivor used to drive himself and never seemed to need firing? I also found myself rewatching the first colour episode sometime ago, which opens with the line "not very long ago in the top left hand corner of Wales there was a railway" which to me implies it must have closed, been lifted, Ivor taken for scrap and Jones and Dai Station must both be on the dole...
    Ps, Barney was a legend!

      the closest, aside from say the cambrian ? railway in standard guage is the Corris Railway, which was independent (owned by the slate quarry company) then (inc quarry) GWR, then BR - closed as passenger services transferred to the Crosville Bus company ( which was part owned by the GWR). Locomotives ended up at the nearby tall-y-lyn on start of preservation control of that route.

    I've heard about the Ivor film but as you stated, hasn't been any word regarding its progress. Maybe the budget was too much for even Mrs Porty to fund. LOL. But there has been a film made recently featuring a fictional train (Not Thomas BTW) called Jim Button and Luke the Engine Driver. It had several TV adaptions but I've only seen one of them. Might be worth doing a GTi about someday but that's up to you. Maybe have it as a way to return Train Now Starring but who knows. Also, in relation on your talk with the 70's Paddington series, I think that the reason most of the cutouts were in black and white was perhaps to allow Paddington to stand out more to the audience while everything else blended into its surroundings. The Ivor Wood Blog holds some cool BTS info on the making of Paddington as well as Ivor Wood's other works in stop motion animation. Check it out when you have time free, it's a good read.

    @jacobjcb8883 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Actually
    Ivor did have some friction like Bagpuss, The Clangers and Noggin The Nog to it in "Mrs Porty's foxes and "Retirement" which show Postgate's view of animals being hunted or captured by humans. This is also shown in the episodes "Snowdrifts" and "The Cuckoo Clock" where Ivor is shown not to want to harm any creature that strays on the line.
    The message is that we should respect all creatures great and small.
    Another bit of friction in Ivor worth mentioning in the episode "Juggernaut" Where Ivor's more modern replacement's brakes are quite faulty and it runs away.
    The message which I Imagine Postgate was trying to get out to the viewers is that a new invention can be quite revolutionary but only if designed with care, This could be throwing a jab at diesel locomotives being rushed into service with little testing, resulting in poor build quality during the 50's

    In America there was a dumb law about how when a locomotives brakes made an emergency application the dynamic brakes were disengaged. So if you hit the emergency brakes the train could go faster. This changed after a runaway on cajon pass, but the law was still stupid and likely made by someone who didn't understand what they were regulating.

    In regard to Chris's point made toward Ivor being fairly low key, thinking in retrospect of it and the other Smallfilms productions now (as of 2023 when I updated this), I can see that Oliver Postgate evidently felt more enlightened with conveying the themes that endeared him in his other work. Setting a piece up about a railway, and the things that happen around it being usually not directly railway-related, kind of underlies how Postgate was uncomfortable delving too far into a subject matter that he was not as immersed in as the likes of the Reverend Awdry, who was a railway fan at heart and thus knew all the complicated mechanics going into his stories. Ivor in the grand scheme - even against Bagpuss and The Clangers, which both benefit from establishing a clear dividing line - comes across as a hodgepodge of story ideas anchored somewhat loosely around a backwater environment. This is ironically the one thing I also find rather deviating about The Titfield Thunderbolt, and a lot of other railway-related media (let alone the Thomas & Friends reboot) being given to writers who are not necessarily railway experts. It is nice though that Postgate appreciated Ivor's fans despite the apparent deviation, and delivered the goods anyway. Regards, Samuel Farris.

    So, you're telling me that the only reason Ivor's railway didn't "modernise" away from steam traction, was because the local community was running their own independent railway and wanted to keep steam? If I've understood correctly, aside from the wealthy donor helping fund everything out of the kindness of his heart, that's not too far off from socialist philosophy.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to get preachy about a children's cartoon from the 1970s and it's supposed political views, or lackthereof. I just find it kind of interesting, and a little bit surreal, how the creator's may have accidentally played into some aspects of socialism, without even knowing it!
    Kind of funny how you can attribute political theories to almost any form of entertainment when you break it down enough, eh? I mean, it's almost like we live in a society, or something! :P
