Truly Timeless, Clangerly Captivating, Bagpssfully Beautiful, Ivorly Irresistible children’s programs full of ideas and creativity that helped to inspire the imaginations of the generations that watched these programs…before they washed their hands for evening dinner and sat around the table ready for a home made meal…good times…real times…
R.I.P Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin Thank you For Making People’s Childhood Every time I watch Ivor The Engine you will be Able to see it from Heaven
These programmes are pure gold and made my childhood very special and these programmes will never be forgotten. Two geniuses and I personally want to thank them for giving us Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine and all their iconic programmes. Love you both. 🙏❤️
What's so funny is that Oliver remembers the lines as he's reenacting for the interviewer. Now they are being made on computer taking longer than when hand drawn. Progress.
A few years ago I was told that the sound that a woodpecker makes is called a yaffle, it brought a smile to my face because I immediately thought of Bagpus
Loved Ivor as a child when ever I watch this it reminds me of walking home from my friends house just as the street lights came on and the smell everybody lighting there coal fires 🔥 knowing I was home for my tea this was pure 70’s magic thanks for memories guys
Just watched 2 of there wonderful programme a few minutes ago, made so emotional bagpuss, still remember the toys name and Ivor the engine. Today on bbc4
Even though I was born in the 2000's, No TV shows have stuck with me more, than Bagpuss, and Ivor. Building a model of Ivor in OO gauge in 2018, and making a new one now, 2 years later, to the month, is what got me into modelmaking. And I have the very same lead metal jinty that always sat next to Bagpuss. And recently watching Noggin the Nog, and The Clangers, shows just how bad children's shows are today. The Clangers has returned, and Ivor and Bagpuss are set to. And that really shows, just how brilliant these 2 blokes were. Nevermind pioneers. They are the foundation that children's TV was built from. And they shall forever be remembered. R.I.P old friends.
I loved Bagpuss as a kid ... it's one of the three reasons why my first daughter (born in 1981) is named Emily. The other two? * I loved Kate Bush too, and her song "Wow" mentions "Emily" at the beginning, as well as her first number one "Wuthering Heights" is based on a book by Emily Brontë * At university (in 1980/81) I was friends with Emily Thornberry (now an MP), not for her politics, but she was one of the nicest people I knew.
I loved watching my Ivor the engine VHS when I was younger. it certainly brought back the age of steam for me. I understand that some people don't like Barney the Indian E keeper for some reason
I have a toy Clanger. When you squeeze it, the sounds come out. But until this TV show, I didn't know what it was saying, see 21:49 "Oh sod it, the bloody thing's stuck again"
Peter Firmin's archive of puppets, scripts and props is now in the Beaney Museum in Canterbury, but very poorly displayed and conserved, squeezed into a tight display case that looks very dusty and dirty. It makes me very sad to see such dear old friends so neglected. They deserve better.
Wonderful TV programmes back then. BBC was, to me, at it's best, during the 60's and 70's. TV today panders to the modern audience and has nowhere near the appeal of the actors, voices, people, music of TV and film of the past.
I wonder why Vernon Elliott was never mentioned in the Documentary. His music accompanied Ivor The Engine. The Clangers, Noggin The Nog.. But no mention of him at all.
Not edited no, you may be thinking of a very similar BBC documentary from 2009 which was recently rebroadcast. It is currently available on iPlayer and called “Oliver Postgate: A Life in Small Films”.
Affection? Affection?! We hold the Great Guru avec the smelly cushion in rather more than affection. Bagpuss is a figure of awe, respect, and the deepest love.
I'd hate to be the one to say how nostalgic this is and how rubbish the latest kids' shows are but...things were better then. Let's be honest. Now off to watch some Jack Hargreaves and Old Country

Charming, timeless, intelligent, gentle and just perfect. They treated children with dignity and respect. Just beautiful.
Two very special men, wonderful creations, superb animation and yet so modest about their work.....real gentlemen,R.I.P guys and thank you.
R.I.P Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin
Thank you For Making People’s Childhood
Every time I watch Ivor The Engine you will be Able to see it from Heaven
❤
RIP Oliver Postgate & Peter Firmin.
How wonderful to find this and with the late Bernard Cribbens narrating. Ivor and the Clangers- just brilliant.
Better than a lot of stuff you see on TV today.
That and it was very creative
Of course that’s obvious, computers have no Soul so it’s impossible to replicate

I remember all of these tv programs growing up with them and great memories even now at the age of 60 I still love to watch them 😊
A much healthier creative work environment than a large studio if you ask me. Even with the low budgets. Their work was magical.
Very true.
I use to watch Ivor the engine & the Clangers from school around 82. These guys are geniuses and how they made it, in a BARN!!! Amazing!!!
Just seen the dolls house , is Totties doll's house , another Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin favourite of mine.
These programmes were my childhood and a lot can be learned by them. I love Oliver's laugh at 19:14 talking about the theft of Mrs Clanger.
Aww that was my childhood, simple happier times! I have Bagpuss on DVD and a couple of toy Clangers, and a full size Bagpuss,.
Two wonderful men.
Thanks for the great memories Oliver and Peter! Kids shows today are so bad I was lucky to be born in the 70s
I loved these two guys, wonderful creations, beautiful stories, lovely animations.... they shaped my childhood & adulthood too....❤
Not just British children. This Australian loved Ivor in the mid-60s.
A few years ago I was told that the sound that a woodpecker makes is called a yaffle, it brought a smile to my face because I immediately thought of Bagpus
They were wonderful. I remember Ivor and Noggin with huge affection.
Loved Ivor as a child when ever I watch this it reminds me of walking home from my friends house just as the street lights came on and the smell everybody lighting there coal fires 🔥 knowing I was home for my tea this was pure 70’s magic thanks for memories guys
Well that was beautiful, thanks for posting.
A brilliant program. The small studio in the barn and everything being handmade is fascinating, by two of the greatest film makers of them all.
Was also sent in Norway. I remember it was so nice.
Just watched 2 of there wonderful programme a few minutes ago, made so emotional bagpuss, still remember the toys name and Ivor the engine. Today on bbc4
Remember watching most of his creations when I was younger (born in 2001) and remember watching them every weekend when I went to my nans house

I'm 4 again thank you.

I HOPE alot of this got preserved!
I use to watch this Documentary on our TV screen at home back in 2007.
wonder what happened to all the clanger legacy, ivor the engine drawings and the bagpuss sets ? are they preserved somewhere?
Just brilliant.
What fantastic childhood memories. With the soothing voice of Bernard Cribins.
Wonderful......
I loved watching my Ivor the engine VHS when I was younger. it certainly brought back the age of steam for me.
I understand that some people don't like Barney the Indian E keeper for some reason
Memories memories memories. Thank you
The artistry and creativity 😮
What a treat! Thank you!

I remember seeing this when it first aired :)
Gentle magic
Am curious as to where all this stuff is now
I hope its safe & in a archive now
microbusss I saw bagpuss and the clangers yesterday in Canterbury
r.i.p oliver postgate
Kristinn Hardarson RIP ivor the engine who sadly will never return 😩😩😩
Peter Firmin's archive of puppets, scripts and props is now in the Beaney Museum in Canterbury, but very poorly displayed and conserved, squeezed into a tight display case that looks very dusty and dirty. It makes me very sad to see such dear old friends so neglected. They deserve better.
No Respect for talent
Thank You ❤
I love smallfilms
Great childhood memories.
Thankyou

I’d love to know where the Ivor the Engine art work is today
I would like the mice to sing "We will rock you". 🤣
We think these programs make our childhood special, but our great-grandchildren watch Pepper Pig and hardly glance at Bagpus - it's all gone!
Fantastic stuff
The chocolate biscuit mill is so cool how does it work?
All you need is a bunch of mice, willing to play a prank on a bird and an old cat.

Exactly what I thought. Incidentally, I don't suppose anyone knows what this piano music is? It's rather well chosen, I think anyway.
He’s mentioned in another documentary about small films which went into more detail about how Peter & Oliver met.
Excellent memories
Oh Happy Days :)
Brilliant
O, I say, you’ve changed the thumbprint.
Amazing!
what about those types have they been restored archived? is there anywhere to see them?
Interesting stuff. Any idea as to when this was first shown ?
According to IMDb it was 2005. www.imdb.com/title/tt1276964/
Not animating the mouths would have made these usable in any other language. I wonder if these were shown in other countries?
Has this been edited, I'm sure the version we recorded from BBC4 was about 50 minutes
Not edited no, you may be thinking of a very similar BBC documentary from 2009 which was recently rebroadcast. It is currently available on iPlayer and called “Oliver Postgate: A Life in Small Films”.
Walt Disney would have loved these two men,
This is the coolest. Also, just put the question out there: does anyone know the name of that beautiful piano piece that plays throughout this?
Affection? Affection?! We hold the Great Guru avec the smelly cushion in rather more than affection. Bagpuss is a figure of awe, respect, and the deepest love.
Nice
I saw that Oliver Postgate is Angela Lansbury's cousin.
This must have been 2005.
Ivor
Postage was a bit of an eccentric.
I'd hate to be the one to say how nostalgic this is and how rubbish the latest kids' shows are but...things were better then. Let's be honest. Now off to watch some Jack Hargreaves and Old Country
1958 ivor the engine first aired actually 🇬🇧
Sounded like he said 'flew out of the top of that hicket' but it's not
its jumping cold this morning
Charmers
Guy-am-I: Darn! Doggone British accents. Always showing up in every late for every duty. Overpaid and every service, I'm outta here.
