I like the fan interpretation that Dante's sudden shift in mood and personality is that he's incredibly depressed and burnt-out after killing Nelo Angelo in DMC1 and is just going through the motions this entire game. It fits in nicely to where he's at in the Animated Series, even if we know that the real reason is just because an unnamed producer thought talkative Dante was lame.
Yeah, it's the only explanation that makes sense when taking into account the series as a whole. Dude had to kill his brother twice, that'd do a lot to make anyone depressed.
In the DMC2 novel, Dante gets pulled into an alternate reality where he has to kill Trish (not much of a spoiler). Killing someone who looks identical to his dead mother probably reminded him of an unpleasant memory that would also lead him to having this behavior.
The anime also added a running gag about how Dante always loses at gambling, which retroactively gives the fake coin a little bit more meaning. That show was working overtime in order to retroactively make Dante's attitude in DMC 2 make any sort of sense and I appreciate it.

I do like the fan theory that Dante was going through a depressed phase after the events of DMC1. Trish disappearing, realizing she’s not really “his mom”, and Vergil being dead and leaving him all alone with no family gave us this DMC2 Dante
the 2007 anime supports this theory too, since dante is clearly depressed in it and it takes place just before the events of the 2nd game. Even if its not totally canon its a good theory and i agree with it
Actually, the real reason why dante's personality changed was because of the producer of this game. He hated dante's personality from the 1st and demanded it be changed and it just happened. It has nothing to do with what you said, it's just simply because the producer hated dante's personality from the 1st game. That's it. Absolutely ridiculous

I love this game. Especially that one scene near the end where Dante beats the bad guy and says “I guess even the Devil May Cry, too… Dante disc”. It’s a tearjerker.
19:53 The million stab is performed with triangle, triangle, then direction+triangle while in DT. It is basically Dante´s DT combo C. The weird/neat thing about this game is that all the directional combos are different between human and DT form. There is also a cool exploit you can do with this move. If you turn off DT just before the million stab animation, Dante will still perform the move as if in DT, but will not have to pay the DT cost. I really enjoyed this review and congrats on your 300th video. Looking forward to DMC3. Consider playing through the game with original mode first to get a more authentic feel. Also be sure to get one of your bros to test out the Switch version´s co-op bloody palace mode.
From what I heard about this game being on 2 disk was sort of because of Resident Evil 2. RE2 was on 2 disk by accident. Supposedly they accidentally measured the amount of audio data and realized it couldn’t fit on one PS1 disk. They might have been able to fix it, but they found out late in development. So they had to put the game on 2 disk. But it kind of gave Capcom a marketing advantage by claiming the game was so big that they couldn’t fit it on one disk. Supposedly they were trying to do the same thing here just on purpose.
Fun fact: DMC2 is one of the few games in the series to include Unlock codes, in that you can unlock the clear bonuses without needing to clear each difficulty. Trish is also usable in both discs. This is also the first game to include Gold Orbs, which auto revive you when you die instead of the Yellow Orbs returning you to the start of the room. (Which doesn't help this game's difficulty being REALLY low.)
It can be up in the air for those who might not be familiar with the 2 sided coin, but it's quite a well known object that has appeared in other forms of media as well (like manga and shit). With that said, this coin is often used to hide the owner's own feelings and intentions. Think of Crow from Deadman Wonderland. Throughout the entire manga he is shown as narcissistic, uncaring and tough, but would usually do favors to others as long as his two sided coin would determine so. Long story short, he does eventually reveal it was all a facade and that he does actually care about those around him, he was just trying to keep his tough, masculine image. By that what I mean is that Dante did in fact care about Lucia and her request, but to not show his real emotions, he hide them with his 2 sided coin and attributed everything to "luck" or "fate". This is implied even at the end when Lucia receives the coin and realizes Dante was deceiving her the whole time, refering to him as "that macho" while having a smile on her face. It should be noted this is quite in character with Dante as in both DMC1 and DMC3 (which is a prequel to DMC1), Dante shows emotions but always refuses to accept them (there's in fact a scene in DMC3 I am not going to spoil for you). Anyways, yeah, no, it's not a joke as you believe.
This was one of my favourite reviews of yours in a long time. The jokes were really well done and timed perfectly. The fade in transition at 6:02 coupled with the scream got me good. Thanks for this, Johnny! Have a good one.
The best about Bloody Palace in DMC2 is that the thing is glitched. There is a good chance that it will crash on the higher floors. When I 100%ed this game on the PS3 I suddenly got a black screen somewhere around the final few floors. I was about to throw my PS3 out of the window, but then I realized that I could still hear Trish's footsteps, when tilting the analogue stick, so I just ran around, mashing buttons in hopes of activating one of the portals. It actually worked.
Tbh, the devil trigger amulets to me were useful for those switches in the air where you just equip the one to fly in devil trigger and also to switch between healing and damage if you got hit a bit too much as it was just free healing then.
Johnny is literally one of the only content creators that I can blindly click on any video he puts out without having to worry about the quality of the video. Its always so well done and hes just gotten better and better through the years. Truly one of the golden game reviewers.
I'm going to borrow a quote from Patton Oswalt on his experience on Blade Trinity as it applies to DMC2 very well. "If you just sit and play Devil May Cry 2 it's a D- it just doesn't work, but if you know what they went through to get that video game made, it is an A+."
DMC2 is admittedly and always will be a guilty pleasure for me as I got that alongside DMC1 and played the hell out of them both. It has flaws. LOTS of flaws but I still enjoy it regardless. As for Dante's attitude...well with the official timeline being 3 > 1 > 2 > 4 > 5. I've always taken his shift in attitude being the realization that he's alone now, especially after realizing he killed his brother in 1. Obviously that doesn't excuse when DMC2 originally came out but I think hindsight helped Dante's characterization in 2, especially with the anime going into detail that Dante is immensely depressed when not on the job. Loved the review Johnny and I've been enjoying your marathon on a series I love very much. Looking forward to the next one!
the only good thing to have come out of Devil May Cry 2 was Dante's inclusion as a reoccurring Boss and eventual recruitable party member in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (fun fact: thats where the little "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" meme came from- it was a sticker they printed on European copies of the game)
My brother played DMC2 twice, once on Normal and once on Hard, and when I heard Arius' scream for the first time, I actually thought they got an animal sound for that voice line.
God damned Johnny. Not even five minutes in and you had me cackling with the 8 hours later bit. Loved this channel back in 2011 and I still love it today.
DMC2 had always been fascinating to me. From the behind the scene problems, the dull gameplay, and nothing story, it’s become a product I find amazing to observe. It’s not great, or even good most times, but it’s always stuck in my mind for better or worse.
Just a tip for DMC 3. The Switch version has an exclusive feature where you can swap between combat styles on the fly. Where every other version has you pick one style at the start of the level and stick with it. Just something to consider.
The infested chopper boss is the single greatest boss in all of video gaming. Devil May Cry 2 is already known as one of the greatest of all time (GOAT factor = high on this one), but the infestation that plagues the cities of Devil May Cry 2 allows for an extremely emotionally-complex character set. The infestation is a manifesto of our society and the zombie-like enthusiasm we take in our militarism, which is a great moral leap backwards. It spreads to the masses, and the military continues to kill. In that sense, the Infested Chopper boss fight is something more. You fight it once and it takes forever to beat. This mimics the reality of persuading a military enthusiast in real life - it takes forever. Then, the more you fight the choppers, you realize that the mission of beating them all is impossible. It is a grim fate that only Devil May Cry 2 can convey accurately. In other words, the infested chopper is definitively the single greatest boss fight in gaming and represents all of society's fears, which tells many stories which are incomprehensibly deep.
Back in the day. I discovered the HELLevator tactic. Shoot enemies with ebony and Ivory until they stagger then switch to your submachine guns. Then watch hilarity ensue
The only things I liked most about DMC2 are Dante's design and the potential Lucia had as a mainstay. Since Capcom's on a remake spree this game would benefit the most from one. If they decided to make Dante have more serious personality as he gets older Capcom coulda gotten away with making prequels like DMC3 and 4 _(before DMC5 released the fanbase agreed DMC2 was chronologically the last in the series)_ with a wackier Dante, while also potentially making Lucia a partner he'd settle down with (like they weirdly tried show hints of with Trish in the first game). Shame the only time she returns in the series is in an short paragraph of an optional prequel novel to DMC5. If she ever returns in-game they def need to fix her voice because her accent changes from French to Italian to American between lines and sometimes mid-sentence. Btw 18:44 you can do air combos in DMC2 but it's a bit awkward. You have to hold down the lock on button, tilt the left stick behind where Dante/Lucia is facing and then press the attack button. I found this out by pure accident.
This feels like one of those "Planned New IPs given an Existing IP's face to wear so they could sell more copies" scenarios. You know, like Star Fox Adventures.
Before I even start watching this, I hope that somewhere, somehow, Lewis guest-stars in this video. It just makes sense. 14:33 You know what, I'll take it.
25:03 - 25:44 I did have this problem for a while when I was younger but I eventually grew out of it. I mean as just one example, despite how much I love the classic series, I can't tell you how long I avoided Mega Man & Bass because of how much it gets ripped online. (especially from Johnny) Since everyone said it was awful I just didn't want to waste my time with it. It wasn't until I saw EPG's RoR episode on MM&B that I finally decided to give it a shot and holy hell do I love it. Despite how many games Johnny has introduced me to that I also fell in love with, this time I missed out on a game that I ended up loving because of its reputation, which I want to stress is not Johnny's fault by any stretch. It's mine entirely, for being so immature and not taking the opportunity to form my own opinion and taking someone else's as fact.
Fun fact in this games Bloody Palace, if you get a boss fight on one floor you'll get boss fights the entire time and it rotates between Chopper, Tank, Bolverk and his dogs iirc and the flaming Bull
Honestly. It’s about time this game gets a Full-On Remake! Cause we could serious use more Cutscenes to explain (and rework) certain Elements of the story for this! Cause DMC2 needs a lot of help!

@@theamazingskippyman2824 Hold up, people thought 5 would be a sequel to 2 rather than 4 despite that trailer focusing on Nero? Or am I misunderstanding?
@@AdamGlory people thought that 5 would show Dante escaping from hell or something like that since Dante was last seen riding a motorcycle through hell in dmc2 (the then final canonical game prior to 5) and the first look at Dante we got for dmc5 was Dante riding into battle on a motorcycle.
Lewis' editing is always improving by leaps and bound and he was already great.
DMC2 was also my first dmc game i played
Me too
Every time I visit a Johnny video, new or old, I’m always shocked at the fact that his subscriber count somehow isn’t in the millions.
wtf does this man have to do to break a million subs?
Mid 2000's Capcom was something else man, so many releases all at once on every console
Same with SEGA/Sonic Team, doing the "Quaintity over Quality" when it should be the other way around
I love this game.
Especially that one scene near the end where Dante beats the bad guy and says “I guess even the Devil May Cry, too… Dante disc”.
It’s a tearjerker.
You're joking but I prefer it over 3
I like the part where Dante pulled out his guns and said "It's Devil Triggerin Time" in complete deadpan delivery
I like when Dante looked at the camera and said “Stop playing this game and play Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening”
King? Yeah, here's your crown
This line still cracks me up.
4:34 That Ed Edd N Eddy clip put a BIG smile on my face. Way to go Lewis, I know you’re not fond of DMC2 too much but that was great. XD
What a great way to start off a Saturday morning with a new video from Johnny
I dont play these games. But every review you make makes me laugh, 10 years later. Including this one.
6:03 That reaction alone makes this video worth watching.
Nice editing, Lewis. I laughed quite a bit at the little reference clips.
3:12 - 3:39 I was laughing my ass off xD The cross fade transitions with Dante's dry deliveries made it all feel even lamer, I love it
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you.”
I need a green screen of that Johnny head turn at 6:05, that was priceless
I've gotta say that's pretty handy especially knowing Capcom nowadays would probably charge $10 to add Trish and the Diesel costumes to the game.
That Ed, Edd, 'n' Eddy clip was so out of pocket LMAO
Thank you for the ending bit! It's always important to have your own thoughts
It gave us one of the best designs for Dante, and a cool crossover in SMT3 so....ayy not that bad
@@Kardz6 "Featuring Dante from Devil May Cry" was certainly a welcome meme.
Congratulations on 300 episodes, Johnny! :) Looking forward to the rest of this marathon and whatever else you decide to do next.
Always happy to watch on both Patreon and on the channel, too. Thank you for the great content as always, Johnny 🫡
What a nice way to start a Saturday morning with a Johnny upload
Damn, Johnny's editing for this video is on POINT!
*Lewis’
Oh jhonny, sweet poor ol jhonny. You are about to get some majore whiplash.
Happy 300th Johnny!
Also, this skit 4:33, 11/10 🤣👌
Johnny is literally one of the only content creators that I can blindly click on any video he puts out without having to worry about the quality of the video. Its always so well done and hes just gotten better and better through the years. Truly one of the golden game reviewers.
Thanks for the unintentional birthday gift, John
You make me a little less sad, my man
I'm going to borrow a quote from Patton Oswalt on his experience on Blade Trinity as it applies to DMC2 very well.
"If you just sit and play Devil May Cry 2 it's a D- it just doesn't work, but if you know what they went through to get that video game made, it is an A+."
What baller artwork. Even for DMC2. DMC2 Dante is probably my favorite design.
Diesel made their outfits as promotional material, and I actually have Dante's Diesel Jacket.
Oh boy perfect vid to watch when i get home after a long day of work. Thanks Johnny!
Just wanna say before I watch this, IT GETS BETTER I PROMISE
300 Johnny Vs. videos and still going.
Amazing. Keep up the great work, man.
the only good thing to have come out of Devil May Cry 2 was Dante's inclusion as a reoccurring Boss and eventual recruitable party member in Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne (fun fact: thats where the little "Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series" meme came from- it was a sticker they printed on European copies of the game)
I never expected to see an Ed Edd'n Eddy clip to make a Johnny VS vid, but I appreciate it profoundly.
DEE EM CEE TOO
DONTE IS GUD AND HE SCHUT AND BINTY PLAYD IT
My brother played DMC2 twice, once on Normal and once on Hard, and when I heard Arius' scream for the first time, I actually thought they got an animal sound for that voice line.
JONY PLEES PLAY DEE EMM CEE 2 IS BEST GAEM, BINTY SAYS SO! Jokes aside, very happy to see you go through this one, John. Happy 300th!
DONTE
Shuut de gun
God damned Johnny. Not even five minutes in and you had me cackling with the 8 hours later bit.
Loved this channel back in 2011 and I still love it today.
5:28 Holy shit that really is this game's cast, this gag is perfectly used
DMC2 had always been fascinating to me.
That's probably why it was most suggested.
I thought of getting that version but my joycons are drifting so I stuck with the PS4 version
I kind of find it strange that the re release of the hd collection that was released for PS4 and Xbox One did not have that feature.
@@redexorcist2539 That HD collection released before the Switch version, but they could've added it in an update, so I'm not sure why they didn't.
@@tylercook9127 I don’t know why either but regardless its strange but whatever
Ya know what Johonny should do for 301th video to celebrate? Another Sonic 06 review...
And by that mean the Sonic P-06 fan project.
I pray that one day that dmc 2 can get a remake
Same. I just hope they don't add Vergil.
@@mrHowlll Vergil's supposed to be dead in DMC2 so him being playable would be cool but wouldn't make sense plot wise.
Thank you for that message about, "X reviewer said this; therefore it is." I hate that kind of attitude. This is why I respect you and your content.
I finished replaying this yesterday (for some reason), Johnny's timing is on point
How to play DMC2:
1. Place some scotch tape over the square button
And press Circle a few times to get easy S ranks lol
I’m so grateful to be around for 300 videos
Omg johnny the patience you must have... thank u so much dude
I still want Capcom to bring back Lucia and put her in a Good game
Same
Fun fact in this games Bloody Palace, if you get a boss fight on one floor you'll get boss fights the entire time and it rotates between Chopper, Tank, Bolverk and his dogs iirc and the flaming Bull
Lewis may sigh 2.
Reminder that DMC2 takes place between the anime and 4
In 2, Dante was dealing with depression after losing his brother in DMC1
Dont worry Johnny, i think you will be pleasantly surprised by the next game. Its one of my all time favorite games ever made.
Honestly. It’s about time this game gets a Full-On Remake! Cause we could serious use more Cutscenes to explain (and rework) certain Elements of the story for this!
Cause DMC2 needs a lot of help!
Time for Dee Emm Cee Toooooo
Is the baest, plees!
i salute johnny for being able to rewrite the same ads every video. real genius in literature
