Yes the Vmax is a cruiser - pulls powerful but not to heavy from roughly 1000 to 3000 rpm which equals the local speed limit of 100kph (60mph).
It turns into a powerful heavy naked bike if you exceed 3000rpm. Very smooth but very powerful and perfect for long and narrow twisted.
If you exceed 6500 rpm it mutates into a drag bike that accelerates so hard - mind blowing.
So, you get what you ask for.
The sensation is not mainly the acceleration itself, meanwhile there are many bikes on the market that accelerate similar.
The sensation is the lack of drama to get that acceleration - no downshift or exorbitant high revs needed - combined with the lack of any electronic aids (apart from Abs)
There is no sports mode or rain mode, no traction control, no wheelie control nothing. It is your wrist and your brain.
The best bike I had so far and possibly the last. I don't see how any bike can push the limits legally beyond what the mighty Vmax Gen 2 delivers

I have to disagree, at over 4000rpm it tries to rip ya fingers of the grips.. I’ve found myself giggling at 135mph as it still pulls like a freight train until 170mph.. +

I have mine flashed, K&N and Cat deleted.... 180 hp dyno at the wheel, i get 30-32 mpg.
Absolutely love the ability to cruise normally OR test the laws of physics ...smokes tire 1st or 2nd gear at will ... forget driving in the rain without perfect throttle control.... handles itself amazingly for its weight. Add a 6th gear and and a 5 extra litre gas tank and it would make this bike a Mona Lisa.
The gas stop factor is a huge pain like you mentioned especially with longer range bikes in your riding group...
With a 6th gear, combined with all the VMax torque, this could of been easily a 45mpg+ machine.
Love my Max, don’t see myself selling it.

By far the best review/video of the 2nd generation Vmax that I’ve seen. I had a 1988 V-max before my 2017 and there is no comparison as far as performance goes. It’s hard to explain to someone how insane the raw power is with the 2nd gen. It’s a thrill every time I ride it still. You did a fabulous job covering the pros and the cons.

The VMAX is not a cruiser. It's what's called a muscle bike. That's what they classified it as back in 1985 when the original was version was introduced at the dealer show in Las 9:46 Vegas. They hired Jay Gleason to demonstrate what the bike was capable of. He was a pro Drag racer and he only weighed about 140-150 lbs. so that helped him in getting the most out of the bike. Almost all the motorcycle magazines hired him to do their timed speed runs especially the 1/4 mile. He really did a great job demonstrating what the bike was capable of. He roasted the rear tire in seconds. Very fun to watch.

I have a 2017 and it never fails to give me a wide grin on my face everytime i get on the throttle. I had a 1988 vmax a long time ago and this current version is a totally different animal. I also have a 2017concours14 and 2012 M109r. I owned some other powerful bikes before but none of them is this sick. Believe it or not, the M109r is my favorite.

Run all 3 rear shock adjustments to full soft, one is hidden under the left exhaust, also use the shinko tires. Mine used to spin first but now it grips and rips, pulls the front wheel through the top of first and in second, and that is with my full hindle exhaust and guru flash. 190 wheel hp, 130 wheel tq.

Appreciate it the video my man, a friend of mine had a VMAX the very first year that it came out, it was 1985 or 86 . He was a huge guy , 6'3 350 lbs, and he could keep up with anything on the street back then, but his front wheel wouldn't stay on the ground, not like yours.
Everytime I rode it, I would have to weight until I was in the higher gears, before twisting the throttle.

Myv1200 jumps up front and back when I smack it. Jacking is wicked.

  • @stevewhite6252
    @stevewhite6252 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Definitely NOT a cruiser. Its a naked standard. I would not have bought it if it had cruiser ergonomics. I have a 2009 which I bought new and I have never felt the so-called jacking. The fly screen was an option. Yamaha intentionally left some low frequency vibration in the engine to give the bike that proper muscle bike feel. The only disadvantage in my opinion is the small fuel tank. 50 pounds less weight would also be nice.
People's reaction to the styling is very polarized. You either love it or you hate it. I love it. I'm 67 years old and have owned about 15 bikes since I was 14 and this is the best bike that I have ever owned. Not one problem since I bought it new in 2009. While a few bikes are a little faster in the quarter mile, I don't think that any bike will beat it stop light to stop light.

Yeah you hang on for dear life and that’s with the computer governed top speed of around 140 mph but the Speedometer is a little optimistic and says 148mph. It’s a completely different experience as a true cruiser. It makes a lousy cruiser and it’s really not one at all. My cruiser buds tolerate me riding with them on the Vmax but I annoy them with powerful roll ons and needing to get gas all the time. But it sure is quick!!!

The VMAX is definitely a cruiser, even if you don’t agree with that fact. It’s a power cruiser. Nakeds are superbikes minus bodywork with a handlebar instead of clip-ons. Just because it has huge horsepower and torque, that doesn’t mean it’s dismissed from the cruiser category. I also ride both a VMAX and ZX-14R. Nobody who rides a Kawi 14 should find the VMAX “scary” because of the power.
The only flaws in the VMAX are:
Fuel tank capacity (it should be 5-6 gallons instead of 4).
Fuel mileage (meaningless if the tank is bigger).
The 5-speed gearbox (it should be a 6-speed).
The electronic nannies that limit power in the lower gears and top speed (Nash Flash tune cures that).
