It took me 3 tries to even understand how my case worked. Years of watching tech content and I was still prone to dumb mistakes because there's a lot of stuff you don't actually hear very often.
The one nice thing about building PCs today as to back in say the 1990's is everything is auto-detect and because of better standards, most things are compatible with other things (from a component standpoint). So for example, you can pretty much plug any video card into any motherboard, and provided you have enough power, it should work fine. Whereas back in the day, you maybe had to flip DIP switches to make things work, and trouble shooting blank boot screens was a bit harder and if you were lucky, you got beep codes to tell you what the problem was. But even the beep codes themselves could have various meanings. It's just an easier experience today as it's pretty much all plug and play, providing you got the correct RAM for the motherboard and CPU combination. There is still the requirement too to make sure that the CPU is compatible with the board, which has always been the case, as is the RAM, but as far as other components, far less of an issue, especially with things like running a dedicated graphics card and CPU graphics at the same time, which may not have been possible in the 90s (unless you got some specialised hardware was probably wasn't common back then; today to run dual graphics it's easy as changing a few settings and in many cases, can be auto-detect). And then you had the nasty IDE master/slave stuff to be concerned with, and if set incorrectly, your system might not boot even if you installed the OS correctly. Today's computers are less tedious to build (fastest I ever put together a computer -- from a hardware standpoint -- was probably 15-20 minutes after everything was unboxed; from start to power-up and testing). For some builds, I have found it much easier to put the CPU, memory and cooler on outside of the case and then screw everything in afterwards, so you can ensure things like heatsink clips are fastened, installing any board-mounted storage (like NVME drives, which are easier to install when the board is outside of the case most of the time), and RAM is installed correctly especially if it happens to sit in an add location where installing it after the board is installed is either very difficult or not possible (less likely in most systems, unless it's something like a compact ITX system or SFF PC). Despite best practices, I always ripped off the plastic CPU cover prior to raising the top plate, which come to find out, is not how you're "supposed" to do it, but I have yet to damage any pins in the some 20-30 computers I've worked on over the years with this type of socket (the "LGA" socket type).

I will be 77 y.o. in 2 weeks and I still enjoy building PCs. On Black Friday I went by Micro Center to pick up an order I'd placed the night before. It was for a 2nd system just to play with and for when grandkids visit. I didn't order a case and wasn't planning on getting one yet, but changed my mind and grabbed the cheapest one they had without researching it. It is the Monarch X1 mid-tower ATX case and what a PITA to build in!! There was no room on the backside to manage cables and still put the back panel on. It came with 4 RGB fans that were powered by a molex connector, thus the RGB was not addressable, nor could you change the fan speed. I got the case to work, but it was not a fun build.
Oh man.... that custom build worked out so awesome, looks sweet!!! I wish I had the skills, time, confidence and money to be able to do what Dawid does on his builds!
You can, it's easy. The hard part is finding what parts to pick out, because of quality, pricing, compatibility, and performance metrics. But once you have a parts list, the building part is just following a build guide. I build multiple PCs now, have started off with nothing but online tutorials. You can totally pull it off, just try it!
The fact the Be quiet is more quiet and cooler, makes a huge difference in my opinion. Also, that slick white and black interior looks sick. I am also always super impressed with your cable management. I have zero patience for that! lol
Mine looks ugly but a 360 aio does wonders. I found the smallest case that fits a 360 aio and it makes all the difference. I don't OC so i don't ever hear my PC.
combination of white and black in custom builds is always special, especially if its custom built, process alone makes it much more valuable, even tho i can understand convenience of prebuild system even if u leave some performance on the table..
What a nice video on building PCs! I would also add that with building your own PC, you are able to shop around for the best prices for each individual parts, and also pick the best makers for each component, rather than being restricted to one brand and having little control over what you are getting aside from the basic specs. After all, the prebuild system had to cheap out somewhere to make up for the poor margins on the core components like CPU and GPU.
The custom totally won ! Be Quiet is amazing for that too ! I have a pure rock 2 cpu cooling fan. Even with the highest settings from the game The Devil in me, I never reach over 45 degrees, the gpu actually didn't like with his 79 degrees but actually run good :) Thanks a lot for your content and continue to help me with all the knowledge you have ! :P
@@kidShibuya Yes but it was not that big of a difference. If you want a computer that have a longer lifespan. Custom is much better with temps and upgradebility
@10:04 is where you really said the best sentence to describe whether or not to build vs buy for newbies- advice like that is what grows the hobby... Good job as usual Dawid
I have not built a PC for over 12 years and I'm in the process of doing it. You can throw tons of money at it, but building a quality system on a budget was (is) really a fun challenge. It's all numbers.
The custom seems to be the better option if you care about cooling and getting quality components in my opinion. Which is one of the reasons I continue to do it myself and not even look at prebuilts tbh. (Also no RGB suit is my style so building it myself gives me wide control over that aspect)
I think the prebuilt was the winner, because it gave almost the same performance without the effort of building. I've been saying for awhile now that the margin of performance between prebuilts and custom pc's is getting thinner and thinner every year, and I think this is a good example
But prebuilt over time will last you less, since the GPU is running in such high temps that decreases lifetime. Also, that’s temps of a low temp weather. In summer you’ll see that GPU throttling in performance due to the high temps. The prebuilt is also limited in how much you can upgrade since it’s so small when compared to the BeQuiet it can be upgradable to a bigger variety of GPUs.
If you want a prebuilt, get a used pc. Sometimes you can find really good deals, like my luckiest find was $350 usd for an i7 11700kf, 3060 ti cyberpowerpc. It was used for like 3-7 months. Too many people spend money on something, and give up on it when they realize they dont want it anymore. Also, the most expensive part of any build nowadays is the gpu. It wouldn't hurt to have your whole build be new, but the gpu used. Even if it was mined, its still good and you'd be saving a good amount of cash
@@linkkevin11 But there are prebuilts now that have cases with great cooling; the latest generation of Omen is an example, and it's in the $1,500 category
@@UOHCUNY I didn't say this pc---obviously this prebuilt has problems with both. But prebuilts like the latest Omen I mentioned have ventilated fronts with dual fans, and a CPU cooler that isn't ewaste
Love dawids take on tech nonsense - his vids are ace! I so appreciate his wit and humour and guaranteed everytime I'm always consistently chuckling along... love it, razor sharp content my friend...
The custom was so much nicer than the pre-built. Definitely like the quality of the Be Quiet products! The noise level of the custom system was awesome!
After watching your vids and realizing if Dawid can do it then so can i, i finally dived head first into a waterless pool and stripped my POS alienware and built my own pc. It was exciting, scary, frustrating and relaxing all at the same time usually the feeling i get while on a havy night on the sauce. I built a pc with some NZXT and BEQUIET goodies and i couldnt be happier. Thankyou Dawid keep up the top notch content.
You're an inspiration. I recently got a white be quiet 500DX and it's a great case, although the build inside is more ancient than the new one you've built!
While I like building PCs, I've gone pre-built for the last couple desktops because it was actually cheaper to do so when adding up the cost of the individual components plus a Pro-grade Windows license.
I got my windows 11 key for $20 because my brother is technically a Microsoft employee (Microsoft purchased Double Fine game studios, developers of Psychonauts 2) Buying prebuilts gives you erectile dysfunction, insomnia, bad breath, acne, tooth decay, leprosy, gingivitis, jaundice, hysterical pregnancy, arthritis, cryptosporidium, ulcers, flatulence, double vision, hemorrhoids, cranky baby butt syndrome, apple Snax, ex-lax, Turkey flaks, etc... And don't forget all the VD!
I remember my old custom build, and it was really good, but i LOVE my HP Victus 15L, I nuked the drive and gave it a nice upgrade of dual channel RAM (32gb from 1x8gb) and you can currently find it on sale for 599 USD at walmart before taxes. Hasn't given me herpes or anything yet, but the newer 15L models come with 2x4gb default, so dual channel 8gb ram !11!
not trying to be a snog but the systems you build yourself look better and you know there's no hidden gremlins inside waiting to bite your backside just when you have your pants down. Keep up the good work Dawid.
After over 30 years of building custom (for myself and others) the stress on first power on never goes away but the euphoria when it all comes together is second to none. Plus you get to avoid Alma going custom, always a bonus.
The novelty wore off for me. Fun when it all works, not fun when it doesnt whether its small niggles or a key component is doa so you need to rma. Last time around I used a custom builder that allowed me to pick whatever components I wanted based around the cpu. Built it and warrantied it (at overclocked speeds) for 2yrs and the price was less than 5% over buying the same components myself. For me it was a no brainer.
In defense of the people who don't like building their own PC if something is broken with a pre-built you have one company to yell at if have to figure out which company to yell at.
Dawid, you are, honestly, one of the best youtuber on this platform, plus that you have a very good sense of humour. I watch you every night before I go to sleep, and you make me laugh every time. Now I don't know if you are reading this comment, but i want to say that you are one of the best youtuber on this platform
I had a pre-built for about 3 years; it's a great way to get introduced. Having just built my own, I can say that there is no competition between custom and pre-built.
As the owner of an ageing HP pavilion that is in to all sorts of depraved component choking and suffocation activities I can safely say the Be Quiet system is the better option here. Also I can stand noisy systems so those fewer 10db would make the world of difference to me!
I bought the Pure Base 500 FX after getting a Pure Rock 2 a few months ago. It completely changed my build from the blacked out NZXT H510 I had before and runs so much cooler now. Was super easy to build in and was an amazing deal for their anniversary. The range of colors it comes with stock is awesome. The one single thing I don’t like is the glass panel screws being individual and not retained but they’re still very nice quality.
I've always been a fan of custom building a PC...I just have ham hands and am so bad at cable management that the case would look like its gone through a hedge backwards in a tornado. So I went for a sort of mid-point. A custom system build by a company. It does what I needed it to do for work and the games I do play so I am happy. However, that Be Quiet rig looks really good and is making me doubt my life choices lol
I really enjoy your content. I think in a saturated TH-cam world you really have a stand out presentation that is unique and very enjoyable. I hope you continue to attract the views you deserve.👍
That Be Quiet Case is the best case i ever had. using it for a year and its perfect. plenty of space, cable management is easily done and the airflow is enormous.
Prebuilds were always bad when I first got into pc's so i learned to build. glad people actually have some decent choices for a pre-built these days. Building will always be better for the overall quality of parts.
I honestly can NEVER justify buying pre-built anymore. I just built my PC. She was right around 1,600 USD and is pretty nice. 12900k, 3060, 32Gb of ddr5 6000. Definitely would have cost 2,500 from an SI or OEM.
Great video mate, just stumbled upon your channel. I find these type of vids really educational for a pc novice like myself and the more i watch these pc build vids the more i want to build my own gaming pc.
I remember my first (and only) machine I built and the pink stuff covering the fan came off when I took the plastic cover off, so I rang the place where I bought it from (it was miles away from where I lived) and they said "whatever you do, don't turn it on, get another fan with the stuff on because it keeps the processor cool" and so I did and to this day, the machine still works perfectly well (although I've not tried it in a couple of years now) but I loved the machine. Ah those were the days... :)
“I think there’s a law against giving people a pc with no Wi-Fi in it” my brother heckin uses Ethernet but would legit go crazy if he didn’t have Wi-Fi ? 🤣
My pc is currently in housed in a 500DX, lovely case! I spraypainted the black parts of it gold, with the few inlaid details (bequiet logo on top and front io) handpainted in a vivid turquoise. Looks really fancy! I wanted to add some turquoise decals as well but couldn't decide on a design. Maybe I'll get to it when I eventually take it apart to upgrade something ^^
What surprises me most is the shockingly not terrible performance of the pre-built. We all know that with a little knowledge and patience you can build a more powerful PC for the price of a given pre-built, but it seems like a few manufacturers have started watching YT and decided to make some non-garbage systems available and I'm happy about it. I'll stick to building, but I'm glad I don't *have* to build it myself to get a half decent machine
As a be quiet! enjoyer myself, to any new pc builders out there I'd highly recommend their stuff! At the very least their fans/cpu coolers are worth it. Great video btw!
I really have had the worst day and just know your the only person I subscribe too that I genuinely get hyped about when I see a new video because your wit just gets to me every time and keep up the good work man you bring joy to more people than you know good luck in the competition everyone
I was having a pretty crappy day, and I was overall pretty stressed, but as soon as I saw this video, I just was able to sit down. It's nice watching your content
Being able to customize your bios is the biggest advantage for custom builds. My buddy was having PC issues and when I told him to go into his BIOS it was so stripped down, I could customize more on my second hand business laptop.
every time I see one of these videos I get a sense of satisfaction. My R7 1800X runs 45C in games, so I know I did something right. RX590 runs like a nuclear furnace but the CPU is good!
Totally agree that there is so much satisfaction building your own. The slight frustrations that come along with some builds is half the fun already. And a huge thanks for making the giveaway as simple as it should be. Instead of clicking 35 different links.
One other fact of pre-builts is that the middleman builder has to make a profit. So they buy $X of parts, spend $Y to build the system and move it on, and then the retail place you buy it from adds $Z profit again. When you build your own, you cut at least one and possibly two steps of profit tax from the puzzle, which generally gives you a little more to spend along the way. I know this video was a be Quiet ad of sorts, I get it, but compromises could have been made on the case and such and possibly stepped up to the 3070 (or even a 3080, given how the market has trashed itself nicely).

The hardest part of the build where a geek's power really is getting put to test 6:40.
It's like the foil-wrap is fighting back or something.
And it bends too easily so you have to be careful
combination of white and black in custom builds is always special, especially if its custom built, process alone makes it much more valuable, even tho i can understand convenience of prebuild system even if u leave some performance on the table..
It helps so much when you have decent quality fans and aren’t choking them to death
Except if you like your games to run smoothly, then the prebuild destroyed it with the 1% lows. But who wants smooth gameplay?
@@kidShibuya Yes but it was not that big of a difference. If you want a computer that have a longer lifespan. Custom is much better with temps and upgradebility
@10:04 is where you really said the best sentence to describe whether or not to build vs buy for newbies- advice like that is what grows the hobby... Good job as usual Dawid
Dawid is a multi-national treasure and must be protected at all costs! Love the videos as always.
Indeed
@@thealien_ali3382 hadn't thought of it that way, but... you're right
what's the background song used in this viodeo? really catchy @6:04 does anyone know
Protected from hot garbage PCs 🤣
what nation does he belong to?
Those temps in that prebuilt make me wonder how that'd do on a hot day here in the Philippines. That puts it firmly in the lose box for me.
These pcs are getting too powerful even for Dawid
I have not built a PC for over 12 years and I'm in the process of doing it. You can throw tons of money at it, but building a quality system on a budget was (is) really a fun challenge. It's all numbers.
The custom seems to be the better option if you care about cooling and getting quality components in my opinion. Which is one of the reasons I continue to do it myself and not even look at prebuilts tbh. (Also no RGB suit is my style so building it myself gives me wide control over that aspect)
Like Every modern Prebuilt has water-cooling, like what if I don't like water cooling XS
7:55 you really had some balls of steel there. I would never walk away after putting a glass side panel on without screws 😂
@@linkkevin11 But there are prebuilts now that have cases with great cooling; the latest generation of Omen is an example, and it's in the $1,500 category
really? look at the temps and noise.
@@UOHCUNY I didn't say this pc---obviously this prebuilt has problems with both. But prebuilts like the latest Omen I mentioned have ventilated fronts with dual fans, and a CPU cooler that isn't ewaste
Th3 difference in sound alone makes building your own worth it
Love dawids take on tech nonsense - his vids are ace! I so appreciate his wit and humour and guaranteed everytime I'm always consistently chuckling along... love it, razor sharp content my friend...
Reminds of my first built with no money, and a lot of errors. It was a great TBT video!
Definitely go with the custom build.
Better temperatures are rather important.
Also looks a whole lot better 👍🏻
my fav youtube tbh you always bring a bit off light hearted fun to your video's and make my days better
Love your videos. Thank you for making my day. 😁
Windows 11 Pro costs about $3 on Royal CD Keys and other grey market sites
@@panscrank or you can just get rid of it yourself
@@johann-vf5du uh?
@@panscrank there are plenty of ways to activate windows without a key
I got my windows 11 key for $20 because my brother is technically a Microsoft employee (Microsoft purchased Double Fine game studios, developers of Psychonauts 2)
Buying prebuilts gives you erectile dysfunction, insomnia, bad breath, acne, tooth decay, leprosy, gingivitis, jaundice, hysterical pregnancy, arthritis, cryptosporidium, ulcers, flatulence, double vision, hemorrhoids, cranky baby butt syndrome, apple Snax, ex-lax, Turkey flaks, etc...
And don't forget all the VD!
Congrats on 500k subscribers!
Hands down my favorite moment was when you pulled the front of the case off and just, "uuuoogghhh" too realistic. I broke my case doing that. Lmao
17'C ambient. Wow. Just wow :D
Your speciality is that your honest and funny at the same time and also very creative different from other robot TH-camrs
All I had to hear was "Deatmatch Arena of Death" and I already had to click the "like" button. Love your stuff, Dawid!
Excellent Video. Hope you're enjoying the snow!
I am so happy to have learned that Dawid is afrikaans and not just me trying to figure out where the hell I have heard his accent before
I bought the Pure Base 500 FX after getting a Pure Rock 2 a few months ago.
I like Dawid's simplicity he just said go click the link and enter and that's all no follow no share nothing at all 👍👍
I really enjoy your content. I think in a saturated TH-cam world you really have a stand out presentation that is unique and very enjoyable. I hope you continue to attract the views you deserve.👍
Love this guy's character 😂
That's the reason I subscribe to this channel
That Be Quiet Case is the best case i ever had. using it for a year and its perfect. plenty of space, cable management is easily done and the airflow is enormous.
I have built two rigs using the white Pure Base 500DX case. They are usually my first recommendation.
Prebuilds were always bad when I first got into pc's so i learned to build. glad people actually have some decent choices for a pre-built these days. Building will always be better for the overall quality of parts.
Congratulations on your 500k Dawid. That's a great video. Hardwork pays off always :)
I honestly can NEVER justify buying pre-built anymore. I just built my PC. She was right around 1,600 USD and is pretty nice. 12900k, 3060, 32Gb of ddr5 6000. Definitely would have cost 2,500 from an SI or OEM.
Be Quiet by a wide margin. Excellent Work!
Congrats on 500k subs and lovely build.
I wanted to put 1,000 like your vid on your intro making fun of people can't build their own PC. lol That was funny.
@David Does Tech Stuff ⁺¹⁹¹⁴⁴⁰⁸⁸³⁵⁷ scam bot
Absolute best and entertaining tech channel on TH-cam! Thank you for all the hard work you do!
BeQuiet are one of the few sponsors where I don’t mind seeing their stuff shoehorned in. They make nice stuff.
Cooler and quieter, the hand-made systems wins !
Omg.. your giving this away... no freaking way man... that's amazing..
This one is soooo beautiful.. white and black.. classy
You Know Dawid is smart when he compares prebuilt to custom bulid
What surprises me most is the shockingly not terrible performance of the pre-built. We all know that with a little knowledge and patience you can build a more powerful PC for the price of a given pre-built, but it seems like a few manufacturers have started watching YT and decided to make some non-garbage systems available and I'm happy about it.
I'll stick to building, but I'm glad I don't *have* to build it myself to get a half decent machine
U forgot to say The main advantage to build a PC is to find GOOD PARTS FOR MEGA DEALS
BLACK FRIDAY & END OF THE YEAR
As a be quiet! enjoyer myself, to any new pc builders out there I'd highly recommend their stuff!
Just learning pc stuffs through your video
Being able to customize your bios is the biggest advantage for custom builds. My buddy was having PC issues and when I told him to go into his BIOS it was so stripped down, I could customize more on my second hand business laptop.
I prefer the hand built system, looks much nicer and as we can see, is much quieter! Keep up the good work Dawid!
Dawid, please never stop making these videos. I enjoy them ALOT!
every time I see one of these videos I get a sense of satisfaction.
My R7 1800X runs 45C in games, so I know I did something right.
RX590 runs like a nuclear furnace but the CPU is good!
500k lesss goooo You DID IT!!! now all the E waste shall fear of you.
Totally agree that there is so much satisfaction building your own. The slight frustrations that come along with some builds is half the fun already. And a huge thanks for making the giveaway as simple as it should be. Instead of clicking 35 different links.
The passive aggresive sarcasm of Dawid never fails to entertain.
Just discovered this channel a week ago. Still binging at this point.
As always it’s been a pleasure watching you do tech stuff, Dawid
One other fact of pre-builts is that the middleman builder has to make a profit. So they buy $X of parts, spend $Y to build the system and move it on, and then the retail place you buy it from adds $Z profit again. When you build your own, you cut at least one and possibly two steps of profit tax from the puzzle, which generally gives you a little more to spend along the way. I know this video was a be Quiet ad of sorts, I get it, but compromises could have been made on the case and such and possibly stepped up to the 3070 (or even a 3080, given how the market has trashed itself nicely).
