@@h2ojr1 I noticed something else because I keep trying to see if Volition is also a source of shame (as the critic can be). Here, Volition says NOTHING about you upholding this vow. Realistically, you wouldn't have a 100% record of this, but Volition feels like it might see why. In fact, I think if you never have upheld the vow, but still recalled having made it and holding onto it, Volition would first and foremost still be about holding to the vow, past history notwithstanding. All that matters to it is being your best self.
I feel that one hits even harder when you notice that Harry gets up at 7.30 on all days except day 1, where he gets up at 8 only being woken up by Kim's motor carriage.
@@zenthr Yeah, waking up at 7:30 every day isn't what matters, the _discipline_ to be better is what matters. You may not always succeed in this goal, but you promised to try and you really, really do try, and that is so much more than good enough.
I really like how Volition is portrayed in Elysium. For most visual novels, this trait is often overlooked because common sense either flies out the window or is the key to victory. Here it's shown to be like a shitty superpower. In the description, it's described as a party pooper and it's only cool for Sane People. In Harry's context as an alchoholic suicidal, it's almost as if it would *hold him back* from exercising his superstar cop abilities. And everyone else who is saner seems to not solve cases as well as you. But look at Volition! It's always there. Mingling with the other voices. Not subjugating but helping soothe them, interpret for them and reading them for you. Volition will call out your other voices when they get too afraid or instinctual. That voice was with Harry even when he was high and drunk and crazy. It's the real superpower that helped him stay alive through heartbreak and all the traumatic crime he witnessed. I also really like how Volition isn't written as ultra-competent either. He's like a very understanding and compassionate brother. But his words always have a tinge of Harry's own self-deprecation as well. He never really gives absolute positives unless he's very sure of it. He's realistic but not sociopathically logical. He's... sober. I love the writing on this guy so much. He's such a good embodiment of how you might dismiss or look at your own very real emotional and logical fortitude when you're ill or want to be ill.
fr, he's awesome, I still remember when he said that all his other abilities were corrupted because of that girl (klassje, orange? I don't remember) he seems more logical and is very rational, I love this guy
Volition did feel like a stick in the mud at the start. But at the end, I respected "him" a hell of a lot. Some of his lines gave me hope, in-game and even out. I wouldn't want Harry's fragmented mind, but I almost wish my own "volition" would speak to me like his does in critical moments.
@@Handles-Are-A-Stupid-Idea I'm reading your comment with some reach. I meant that as in archetypal logic that's written with zero emotional consideration. The cold calculating logic type. But real life logic is very emotional and good logic must be very aware of how important emotions are and it positively as well as negatively affects things.
That shit made me laugh so hard, I was literally tearing up from the relevance of the first quote when that second line came in. Take life & your problems seriously.... But never take them so seriously that you can't laugh. Otherwise, what's the point of anything?!
@@Zack-bl2ggTo be fair it was followed up by "If it sounds like it doesn't make any sense, that's because it doesn't. Stop thinking these idiotic thoughts and say something normal instead."
@@pasharighton good on the detective. there is nothing more individualist and ultraliberating than enjoying the breeze between your knees. who are these moralists pansies to tell you otherwise?
@@pasharightonwhich is especially funny because it’s impossible to leave the hotel room without putting pants on first to get your keys. So you have to intentionally make the decision to take off your pants in the timespan between retrieving your keys and meeting Kim.
He wants you to look out for your self and for others as well. He wants you to be better. Best friend out of all the voices. He can't really help you get out of the hole you're in on his own, but he sure can push you into using the other voices to get your self out.
The dude who voices your thoughts is the true embodiment of Volition. He had never done voice acting for a video game before and had no clue as to the novels worth of lines he would have to voice. But, he did it anyway and somehow made every single line into gold.
I'm a psychologist in training and would like to use these lines as a source of inspiration to reassure patients who struggle through it. The Volition scripts are absolutely on-point regarding a therapeutic journey. It happens so often that people give up, even after doing tremendous work. I remember when in-game, you develop a thought, I think sobriety, and the result is "this is how normal people are". I remember how that hit me like a brick wall. People have the capacity to work through absolute hell, absolute bottom, claw their way up to the surface just to be met with the realization that many others never had to struggle like that in the first place. That this amount of intense pain, dedication and will-power puts others in positions of power. Meanwhile, "all" it did for you was reset you to the normal, default position. And yet, without that sacrifice, you would never leave that dark place. Now, you have opportunities like you would never have had. So, it's just a bit further now. It is possible, because *time* is possible.
The description from processing "Sobriety" shook me too. Getting out of 'rock bottom' and feeling kind of underwhelmed, embarrassed that I was like this while everyone was like that and now showing up as a responsible adult years late made me feel like giving up on self-improvement. "Well if that's all this effort got me, why try at all" kinds of thinking. Thank you for putting it like this, it's easy to lose sight of how much that effort actually means to /me/ and that moving forward means experiencing life and fulfillment in ways I need to earn.
@@blackcoffee4903 if you have the will to claw yourself out from the absolute worst, imagine what you could do.. if you just kept going? Never know if you don't try!
I suffered from a benzo and alcohol addiction since I was 16. I remember playing this game for the first time and crying because I related even though i was only 23. I'm 26 and celebrating 6 months clean after having multiple seizures from withdrawals and making my own decision to go to detox and rehab, It took a year to detox safely but I made it. This game is one of the reasons why. Thank you volition.
1:14 "No. Not a disaster. Weave this into the story of you. Walk out of its... ruins. Save those who still can be saved. *I'm* on your side." This delivery... unbelievably reassuring, truly unbelievably.
I try to model my self-talk after Volition. Forgiving, but honest. Realistic, but encouraging. It is difficult. But Volition is the part of you that believes in you, despite being keenly aware of all the odds you've stacked against yourself.
You live because the fire inside of you burns brighter than the fire around you. This will hurt. Maybe more than anything has ever hurt. But you will survive. You will heal. And you will grow. Something beautiful is going to happen.
No bullshit, no frills. Metaphors and subtext are nice, but you can still hide comfortably behind imprecision of them, thinking you have "actually got it" without doing the actual mental exercise.
@@AtomicBlastPony The Deserter is basically the opposite Harry should be: hung up on the past, extreme among extremists, hateful, and high as fuck from bug fumes. But it's a contrast thing, not stated explicitly in the way Volition tells you that things will be okay and to stay the course. And a lot of people don't take the part about capital killing all your friends too seriously because they think he's just a crazy commie.
@@AtomicBlastPony The deserter is a part of it, but the politics (and notably, how asthetic they are above the person expressing them) are part of what I see as a deeper point about how people are. Edit: But hey, that's only how it spoke to me.
"This is somewhere to be. This is all you have, but it's still something. Streets and sodium lights. The sky, the world. You're still alive." That's my favorite Voilition quote. Thinking of getting a tattoo with it.

"The road to healing is going to be a long one. Stay the course. You will make it, some day. Just remember: You've made it this far... and it's just a bit farther now. Let's finish this." Idk why, this line at the end, combined with the pose like Harry's the guy out of the 'Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog' painting was really powerful.
I remember getting to THAT phone call by the boardwalk and choosing to go ahead with it to spend some time. My Volition was pretty high so I ended up getting the red check where Volition tries to get you to hang it up and somehow stuck the landing at 28%. Something about Volition telling Harry that he doesn't just have to keep replaying his traumas on loop and can break the cycle felt so encouraging.
What is so unique about volition is that it is the one skill that will always be on your side. This is shown by the interaction with Oranje Dancer, where he tells you the others are compromised. All other skills can be depressive, impulsive or both, but Volition truly just wants you to be your best you.
What makes the Oranje Disco Dancer scene even more brilliant, is that Volition overcorrects in its unadulterated devotion to you -- it wants to punish her for trying to manipulate you, even if Volition itself doesn't realise it.
I found it funny how everything Drama says in interactions with her is 100% opposite of truth. It was almost enough to just do everything in opposite to what it says, and you're in the clear.
@@DreamfillahYeah, I see a lot of people who talk about Volition in this scene who to me miss the deeper subtext- Volition is on your side, you’ve been wronged by pretty women, it reacts with extreme vitriol to being tricked by another pretty face- even though looking at it logically Klaasje was doing her best to save her own skin, and not manipulating you in an especially cruel way… while she did lie to you, Harry’s own feelings did most of the work, and so Volition majorly over-responds as if *she’s* at fault for not just her own lies, but your internal urge to think of her as perfect, and her failure to live up to that.

turns out harry is extraordinarily lucky, for all the shit he's in, to have this kind of voice in his head. i wish my volition could be this good, i could really use this kind of affirmation.
Try to see yourself outside of the unconfortable situation you are currently experiencing, and imagine yourself consoling a friend that is experiencing your exact situation, then write the thoughts, the conversation, that you would have to reassure your friend hat everything is ok and that in the end he would be ok. Then read the text you wrote. Volition is inside all of us, the world is very complex and complicated, and existed even before we where here, with our dreams and desires, so we are going to be dissapointed many times in our lives, but we are strong, and even though all around us we see strangers, we are not alone, and we can do this, god speed.
It's also incredibly heart wrenching to see a man who - even if you maxed out psyche - was beaten down to a point where he nearly drank himself to death. The things that could have broken a man with such willpower must have been horrible
Are you sure you don't have this voice in your head? I've thought I didn't, but it was just quiet, and I didn't listen carefully enough, and to be honest sometimes I purposefully did not want to listen.
I have that voice, albeit its usually me talking to myself.. and not a fractured mind such as harrys case. Its hard sometimes, and fear can hold us back.. but there is still that little part of you to tell you to just put one more step into it, one more second to spend even if its hard.
i like when you get the blue spirit and volition says your storing it he goes "were just gonna store this one as a sellable item, okay?" and really reassures harry with the okay at the end.
I laughed out loud at Volition's response to getting the blue liquid. He knew Harry would try to drink it, and breaking the fourth wall was the only way to stop him.
I suffer from mental health issues, and this game overall just spoke to me. I felt understood, which is rare. I'm terrified of my mind's own oblivion and it's like I'm in a constant fight for my life to keep my shit together. I have kept my shit together. For a long time. But I can't go on without real help. It has taken me even longer to admit that. All it takes is one bad day or one fatal lapse. This reality thing is the only game in town. It's probably in my interest not to blow it. The urge is strong, but I am stronger.
It's 1 AM here, and I'm after 2 bottles of wine. I've read some of the comments - and I just want to say this: Volition is not someone sitting on your shoulder. It's not some miraculous voice saying comforting things, when you need to hear it the most. It is a part of you, it is you. Stand up, dust yourself off, gaze forward, and say it with me: "You will make it - I will make it."
His dialogue feels like a therapist, challenging your negative perceptions of yourself, not letting you give up on life, praising you when you succeed, even if its in a small way. He's my favourite voice in my head (or Harry's to be exact)!
Having these Volition moments was fantastic, especially since I was running an Intellect/Psyche build. Both my mind and psyche frequently had arguments and criticisms, meanwhile Volition would chime in every now and then just to say "Hey, you're going to be ok. You can push through the noise and pain."
I'm getting through a depression after I made a terrible life mistake then I remembered Harry and Volition so I decided to watch this vid again. It does help me a lot. Time to subdue the regrets and proceed, I'm still alive after all. Thank you for the vid.

I'm a first generation immigrant from a poor country. The only child of a family with issues connecting emotionally. Completely disconnected from my society of birth due to how much bullying I suffered as a child. A few years ago, I finally managed to make it and became a citizen of a better place. This video was like hearing, for the first time in my life, someone speaking with, at times, the very exact tone; the exact same voice; that has spoken to me for the last however many years that I can remember. The voice that comes to me from the inside. I didn't expect to start bawling over a random video that TH-cam recommended me. I only played a bit of Disco Elysium and realized that it was one of those great games I needed to play properly once I had the time. I hope I can remember a little bit in a few days or weeks how this video made me feel and actually make the time to play the game.

The world breaks everyone and afterward many are strong at the broken places. But those that will not break it kills. It kills the very good and the very gentle and the very brave impartially. If you are none of these you can be sure it will kill you too but there will be no special hurry.
"You'll get it in the next life. Do what you can with this one while you're alive." This . . . honestly might be the most hopeful thing I've heard in a long while. That there'll be a chance to get it right next time.
I just had a really rough night and this was open in my current tab so I was like why not put this so I can head for bed. Nope, cried, cried some more, couldn't stop crying, kept listening to the first part for hours and now at 5:22 AM I think I got it all out of my system. Thank you.

VOLITION [Medium:Success] - You can do it. To live is to suffer, but it is also love, hope, laughs, overcoming. You can't stop pain, but you can choose how to react to it. Like a hangover, this will also pass. Ride the wave, you will be okay. Trust me. Don't listen to your pain, listen to your heart. Your life has not ended. This is just the beginning.
To be human is to suffer, things get better slowly over time. The bourgeois will fall and we will all be free one way or another, even in the hell they created we can still find beauty in life. We won't let them break us, we are not their thralls, we are humans and they are not.
Thank you. Thank you. Right now I am at very low point of my life. Both of my parents have cancer. And I have no one.And I am just trying to find some power in myself. And its strangely helping
Volition is not the most useful skill in the game (in terms of skill checks), but godamn every time he spoke, during my first run, i wanted to cry. I wish i could have someone like him on my side irl everytime i feel overwhelmed or unmotivated
Well here is what my volition says "Its not your fault, capitalism and the world is cruel. But things will get better, its the general course of human history, trial and error, self improving. The old ways of doing things will die and we will be one step further in a better direction. IF you want to see that better future, if YOU want the story to continue fight like hell. Stop arguing with idiots on the internet, you have nothing to prove to them, they will only further bring you down. Stop playing Noita and Rimworld all day, yes its fun I will admit but you aren't going anywhere with this, you can put it down for a couple hours, you can already do that NOW. If you can't do this for you, do this for the people you care about, do it for the world, do it to spite the evil in this world, tap into your inner humanity and get up. You aren't worthless, you are alive aren't you, that is something and value is a subjective measure anyways, to be worthless to the systems that grind your soul into a paste is an incredibly freeing experience, it means you are winning and they are losing even by a small fracture. Let the bourgeois starve, help your fellow working folks, help them see the world you see and keep marching forward, that is all we can do we cannot afford to stand idlily by." Hope it helps.
The music also adds a lot, but sometimes we just need to hear a supporting sentence from another person. Human beings aren't meant to be all on their own. Wether you have friends to support you, or a TH-cam Video with snippets from some video game, both of these things are real. Both of these things can support you. So, as Volition said in this video: Don't give up! You can do this! Remind yourself of this, return to this video as much as you need to. You CAN succeed!
When I listen to Harry’s volition quotes, while they are uplifting, encouraging, and even occasionally humorous, part of me is filled with sorrow. When I think about why that is, I realized it is because when I hear Harry’s inner voice of volition, I hear echoes of my own - and I see how damaged mine is, from my own actions. I have silenced, choked, poisoned, and abused this same inner voice for the majority of my life and when I hear the Volition skill in the game I hear that same voice within me, thin and beaten down, but still doing its best to encourage me as if completely unaware of the abuse that I’ve given it. It is remarkable how cruel we can be towards ourselves. I truly think that many of us owe ourselves an apology; we didn’t deserve that cruelty.
Do you know what the best part of Voition is? It is with us. With all of us. In the brain of each of us, in a lobe somewhere semantic and scientific, and existing at the same time, is Volition. You may not acknowldge it, or recognize it, bu it is there. Whispering to us, almost like a Guardian Angel, but it is no supernatural, nor otherworldly. It is a part of us, just like a shadow, and just like a shadow, it can never be eradicated nor erased, not even in darkness. We always talk about the devils on our shoulders as a collective and conscious speices and society. I believe it is high time we talked and understood these angels on our shoulders. Because even the most suicidal of us can dream, and even the worst of us have these. Volition.
Yes, absolutely-I was a suicidally depressed, barely-functional addict for years prior to this game’s release, and I got myself through just by heeding the unrelenting voice in my head that demanded I never give up, that I resolve to get my shit together & keep striving toward my own redemption. 2019-2020 were massive years for me in terms of coming full-circle in having to confront my core traumatic content, and DE finally gave a name to that voice which never left me, even in my darkest moments when not even I truly had my own back: Volition. “I’m on your side.” Brings tears to my eyes, honestly… it’s the realest shit.
I needed to hear this. As someone who listens to all the voices but Volition, it helps to hear a gentle voice that knows it's going to be okay and pushes to remind that in spite of how heavy everything feels. Thank you.
@@JamrockHobo I remember getting drawn into the game so well that I didn't realize how much I felt that the Oranje Dancer convo was a midgame boss fight, until after it was over.
During those long years when I struggled with trauma, anxiety and depression (and I still do to some extent), I had hoped to find someone that I could love and someone who could love me. It was only recently that I truly realized that there is one such person in my life and that's me. I hadn't extended the same love and compassion to myself that I was so ready to expel outward, to others. After realizing this, my own Volition had "woken up". Sure, I've always had it in me, but I felt like its strength has been somewhat renewed. I'm still a mess and I might always be like that. I may never heal completely, but unless I can love myself, my life will remain miserable. Volition represents healthy self-love that doesn't sugarcoat things, but also doesn't poison them with unnecessary pessimism.
It's so odd, yet so reassuring to see how this resonates with people. I think we all, like Harry, go through times of desperation and, seemingly, unbearable pain.
He's such a loyal friend.Volition sounds like he csme out of a more dramatic work of fiction.
fr, he's awesome, I still remember when he said that all his other abilities were corrupted because of that girl (klassje, orange? I don't remember) he seems more logical and is very rational, I love this guy
Volition did feel like a stick in the mud at the start. But at the end, I respected "him" a hell of a lot. Some of his lines gave me hope, in-game and even out. I wouldn't want Harry's fragmented mind, but I almost wish my own "volition" would speak to me like his does in critical moments.
"sociopathically logical" isn't a thing for a lot of reasons.

It is possible, because *time* is possible.
especially the semen reserves line, of course
I don't think that phrase recital is the mark of a good psychologist or even good help.
I think I needed to hear something like this. Thank you.

I'm glad the narrator got the spotlight by voicing Sisyphus in Overkill but I feel like he didn't get enough recognition for his fantastic work in DE
I teared up in that part. wow.
For those we have lost, for those we can yet save.
I try to model my self-talk after Volition. Forgiving, but honest. Realistic, but encouraging. It is difficult. But Volition is the part of you that believes in you, despite being keenly aware of all the odds you've stacked against yourself.
It’s totally ok for a man your age to wear pants like that
If he hasn't said anything about your pants, no one will
You live because the fire inside of you burns brighter than the fire around you. This will hurt. Maybe more than anything has ever hurt. But you will survive. You will heal. And you will grow. Something beautiful is going to happen.
It's interesting how explicit Volition is in terms of voicing the game's message.
No bullshit, no frills. Metaphors and subtext are nice, but you can still hide comfortably behind imprecision of them, thinking you have "actually got it" without doing the actual mental exercise.
I'd say the Deserter voices the game's message more.

There is a reason why Volition is shaped like a crown

I think we could all use an extra point or two in Volition.
I laughed when, in the middle of inspiring motivation speech, Volition just went: "HARRY, PUT YOUR PANTS ON!"

I'd like a "8 min of Encyclopedia for big brain time"
8 minutes of encyclopedia but harrys head visibly grows bigger every time
8 minutes is like just two quotes of encyclopedia

i love it. big Jeopardy energy.
Quote 1: Life is hard but you will make it, just keep going.
Damn that hits hard, I wonder how they'll top that.
Quote 2: SEMEN RETENTION SOCIETY
I chose volition as my main skill for the first playthrough and it carried me all the way through the game. Especially through a certain phone call.
Just wanted to say: Thank you for making this video. I watch it from time to time to lift up my spirits.
much love
It's so odd, yet so reassuring to see how this resonates with people. I think we all, like Harry, go through times of desperation and, seemingly, unbearable pain. I truly wish to stop hurting, and this helps a lot with whatever comes next. Thanks for your work, i hope it helps people as much as it helps me.
Holy shit, this is really healing.
I am actually watching this during a very anxious inducing episode, this definitely +1 my morale, much thanks
Damn that last one made me shed a couple of tears
My favorite Volition line:
"No. This is somewhere to be. This is all you have, but it's still something. Streets and sodium lights. The sky, the world. You're still alive"
I got fired from my job yesterday, and I really needed this. Thank you.
I just beat Disco Elysium for the first time today. I never encountered the first quote in-game, because I picked the intellectual start...
I haven't cried this hard in a long time.
Thank you
Just started a new job and moved into a completely different town still trying to get through my first week and had a complete meltdown my first day. This immediately made me feel 10x better thank you for this upload!
I didn't expect volition to be this good tbh, makes me wanna start another playthrough. Can't wait for electrochemistry or the one u choose to do.
Of all of life’s pain we find all of life’s pleasure. And in the middle Volition no pleasure no pain just will power. The will power to move and get the job done.
4:38 "Perseverance and success... feels so good. Feels inspiring."
Yes, fuck yes
4:33 was one of the most shattering moments of the game for me. I wanted to feel like that so badly. I wanted to know I could rely on myself like that, to trust myself to persevere and succeed instead of just assuming that I'd fail. I think this game genuinely changed my life.
I’m dealing with alcoholism right now and Volition speeches hit hard, I’m trying to be better and get better
Hang in there dude! I may just be a random person on the internet but you WILL make it. Keep marching forward above all else, you'll make it out of the forest eventually!
Strangers we may be, but all of us strangers are rooting for you, no matter how long it may take. Be vigilant, we love you.
Is there any reason to stop?
In my case, nothing makes me stop, probably i'm too depressed and don't see any reason.
I'm want to feel much worse i think.
@@RedstoneCriper Self-destructive mindset, I have it too. When you reach a point that you both: don't want to improve and actively sabotage any progress.
I'm working on a project that I hope can open new opportunities in my life, I'm very close to finishing but I keep having to break and fight the urge to give up cause I feel I don't deserve a better life.
But we do deserve better, both you and I need to keep actively fighting off those thoughts and slowly but surely take steps to improve our situation.
I hope you find your way brother.
Hey. Just wanted to say thanks. Im going through a very difficult depressive episode. And honestly, it helps, even a bit.
Sometimes you are so blinded by the darkness that surrounds you, the lies your brain keeps telling itself, lies that generate other lies, like recycled toxicity that just keeps feeding onto itself. This curtain can keep you blind to what matters and what REAL reality is.
"You're not an idiot, You're a detective and a detectives work is hard. You made it this far, and its a bit further. I'm on Your side."
Sometimes it takes a silly video game youtube movie to lift that curtain, ever so slightly, but lift it enough to notice the light from behind it.
Because "The road to healing is going to be a long one"
I'm glad you liked it
@@JamrockHoboYeah I think I'll skip on the semen retention thing thanks. :P
Volition really has a different tone from the others. Kind of soft, encouraging. Love this.

"oh another fun Disco Elysium video!"

* Cries *
I listened to this recently on the anniversary of my older brothers suicide. I wish he had made it so he could have heard this. He would have loved all of this. I miss you so much bro.
I gotta save everyone I can in this life. I’ll see you in the next later bro
I’m so sorry for your loss. May his memory be a blessing.
My favourite quote from disco Elysium is a volition check, “The road to healing is going to be a long one. Stay the course. You will make it, someday. Just remember that you’ve made it this far and it’s just a bit farther now. Let’s finish this. I’m on your side.”
Volition with low morale be like
You are a worthy, perfectly okay individual. Your life literally is as valuable as all the others'. I'm just gonna support you and you're gonna keep coming back, imm'a give you the strength you need, you're gonna keep coming back. Why? Cause you keep taking magnesium! You worthy man destined for great things!
You gonna stay on the force until you die. You serve this purpose in life. Your purpose in life is to be on the force cracking tough cases daily. Your purpose in life is to be in that field cracking a case daily.
Your life is valuable, you serve a purpose.
You should heal yourself, NOW.
And give yourself a piece of that oxygen, and ozone layer, that's covered up so that we can breathe inside this pale trapped bubble.
Cause what are you here for? To give up? HEAL YOURSELF! I mean that, with a 100%, with a 1000%.
Damn, I neither normally express when I cry, nor do I normally engage my emotions online, but this really touched me. In a way that I didn't think was possible, but here we are. I can't help but feel emotional, I can't help but be carried alongside the prose, greater than the sum of its parts is best defined in a blind playthrough of this game.
Trust me, even if you think you can outsmart this game, just play it.... and enjoy being humbled.
