Amity Blight is a good example of how to do good LGBT representation. The love she feels for Luz is well justified, as it was built throughout the season; In addition to the fact that she not only stands out for being a lesbian, but because her character has a personality, conflicts with which we feel identified and evolves as a character.

I wish I grew up watching cartoons like this... it’s so touching cause we are constantly told that lgbt+ people’s mere existence is inherently sexual and to watch a cartoon where it’s just there- it’s part of the characters and it’s not a big deal, and they are so adorable... maybe if I had this type of representation growing up I would’ve realized I was a lesbian before I turned 20 and I wouldn’t have thought I was just an unlovable outcast my entire life
Kid currently growing up watching these cartoons here. I’ve always known the existence of the lgbtq+ community because of media like this. I’m SO very grateful that we have something like this. I’m a 14-year-old queer brown girl and seeing Luz, a 14-year-old queer brown girl, just makes me so happy. And the fact that Disney, a notoriously conservative company that’s very important to the queer community finally has a queer protagonist right there. No need of blanketing it in layers of subtext. No need of external confirmation from the creators due to censorship. Just there, existing blatantly and organically. It’s amazing.
The fact that Disney confirmed Luz is bi in Enchanted Grom Fright, even though she obviously doesn't feel the same way about Amity (yet), and that it was pretty much confirmed in Adventures in the Elements is kinda funny.
Ongoing theories emerged that Luz supposedly acknowledges Amity’s crush on her, but her reasoning for why she does not speak out falls in line with either (a) her witch training, (b) helping Eda with her curse - at least before Lilith fixed it - and (c) the portal now getting destroyed. Even though the ladder possibility proves itself a crucial plot line of Season 2, I find it difficult to believe that audiences won’t receive some Lumity.

As a bi teen , shows like the owl house, she ra and adventure time have helped me so much and made me feel seen. I used to only see LGBt+ representation in shows with mature ratings, seeing it in cartoons just makes me happy in a way I can’t describe
I'm 23, im not sure how old you are, but the 2000s was rife with homophobia. The homophobia of the 90s and throughout the 2000s was mad stanky. It was hard to escape from, and cartoons and other media at the time perpetrated negative LGBTQ stereotypes, I love the owl house and wish i grew up with it when i was a kid, this generation of kids and teens are really lucky to have shows like these to grow up with
SHE-RA!! YEEES!! Those shows are so good.. too bad I stopped watching Adventure Time when I was in 3rd grade. I would’ve continued watching it but I missed a couple episodes and eventually just gave up. I heard about Bubblegum and Marceline (I think that was her name?) becoming a couple and I’m happy to hear that!!
as a non-LGBTQ+ person, I'm so happy to see story telling like this. I want to experience as many different peoples stories as possible and I get giddy every time a new perspective crosses my path. And I don't just mean LGBTQ, I want different races, cultures, social experiences, and geographical areas retold and shown. I'm thankful for Disney and other companies that are starting to take this seriously and devoting real effort to it.
@@nqrui2194 they meant that she took lengths and thought long and hard about this story. She had to argue with Disney a lot to bring this representation in.
@@nqrui2194 Yeah, haven't you heard about it? There was a giant, epic battle that shook the grounds. The bards around the world sing the tale of her glorious victory!
I'm 15 and this show and She-Ra helped me come out to my family. I knew my family would be accepting I just never saw myself in media where there wasn't homophobia and it made me scared. I'm now out as an agender asexual lesbian and have had no problems with family. It feels amazing and I love this show and spop for it.
LGBT representation is great in modern cartoons! I am 18 years old. I personally grew up in the Caribbean in a very conservative christian household and attended an all boys Catholic school.People there aren't as accepting compared to the people in the US. It's sad to see. Even though I'm not LGBT, I still accept people for who they are and not who they love.
I am still waiting for an asexual or aromantic major character in a cartoon aimed at younger audiences. Let kids know that it is perfectly fine if they dont want to be in a relashionship, and that its not strange for feeling that way. Which in turn could help give representation to these two often overlooked orientations.
Here’s my question: will Disney let The Owl House get away with having a same sex kiss between Luz and Amity? UPDATE: The latest episode has Amity kissing Luz on the cheek, which is awesome! SECOND UPDATE: They actually kissed!! I can’t believe it actually happened!!
I hope so. Maybe Amity will get rejected, but I don’t think Disney is gonna make the crew pretend she doesn’t have feelings for Luz, that would be really bad for her character development
@@eu4083 I don’t think Luz would outright reject Amity, but she might be initially confused about her own feelings. I think she will very quickly realize she loves Amity too
The dance scene from Grom Fright will go down in history. The Owl House has done so many things right. Had a proper build up to the relationship, didn’t just shove it to the end of the show, and it’s front and center with 2 major characters of the show. Lgbtq+ representation in cartoons still has a long way to go but I’m really happy with how far we’ve come throughout the 2010s and beyond. I may not be lgbtq+ (at least I don’t think I am I don’t know what I am yet) but I’ll always be an ally to you guys. (Also Luz and Amity reminds me of my aunts a little bit) 💙💖🏳️🌈
That dance scene is easily one of my favorite animated sequences ever. I love it when relationships develop in a realistic manner. I am a bit of a sucker for friends becoming lovers or in Lumity's case, rivals to friends.
13:09 Dana, when she says this, means that, if they are developing the romantic thread of Luz and Amity, but that this is not going to overshadow the main plot, that is, the plot of mystery and adventure magic, but yes or yes, they will continue the romance of Luz and Amity.
The best part of having a sapphic main couple in this show is the amazing feedback from fans to let Disney know that it's worth it for them, and doesn't have as negative feedback as they thought Which hopefully paves the way for more lgbtq+ couples involving the main character(s) which aren't just in the final episode For example, I know many Amphibia fans (myself included) are hoping for Marcanne to be a thing (to the point where I generally forgot it wasn't canon lol) and with positive Lumity feedback, if Matt intends for them to be a thing, Disney will be more willing to let it happen, which is great
I get that people ship the human girls in Amphibia and I respect that but personally I don’t ship any humans😅 you don’t have to date at 13....😶 plus there’s nothing wrong with being just friends too not every group of main characters have to date...just saying...you said Marcy....um just wait for Saturday ok?😅
@@gracekim1998 Why do people only say that when its a gay couple, no one ever said stuff like that about Star or Marco when it was airing and that was actually problematic
Yeah I’m 13 and literally love this show and so exited for the next season I show my 6 year old sister shows with lgbtq+ rep like owl house, shera, korra, and Steven universe to show her that it’s normal and I’ve talked with her about the community she doesn’t understand the lanes but she knows that anyone can like anyone and I’m a person who can like everyone and I am so thankful for these shows for giving good rep that is great for younger kids to understand
She already wanted shows to watch so I suggest those since they are literally kids shows plus I had already watched them and no one is too young to learn about the lgbtq+ community she I’ve told her I’m bi in a way she could understand and I’m helping teach her that we aren’t weird or bad we are just like everyone else. By introducing her to it at a young age she understands it better I honestly wish I learned about the coming more at a younger age too I serrated to learn about it in about the 2nd grade and still to this day I learn new things
My main concern about Amity is that she seems to have been diluted a bit into just the “gay/bi disaster” character. I love the relatability of her being so nervous/awkward around her crush. But I don’t want her to just become “the character who has a crush on Luz”. She has so much back story and was such a compelling character during the first few episodes that she appeared in. So, I just hope that without omitting the plot thread, they’re able to continue developing Amity as a character overall. Based on the writing of the rest of the show though, I have faith in the crew to do that! 💚
I love how the show don’t do what a lot of media does and just call out the fact that their gay or whatever and just treat it like a normal relationship like it is. It feels natural and not like an agenda and that’s why I love shows like Owl House who does representation right
Exactly it's not shoved down our throats or anything. It just happened normally. At least they didn't pull off the good ol he/she is gay at the last episode with no development
I would like to note that it's also not an unimportant detail that the two are just so adorable together. The cute factor is a big plus when trying to convince people about something.
That’s true 😂😂😂 I never had any problem with lgbt people, but I hate to admite seeing same sex couples used to make be feel uncomfortable (I though it was weird, though I would never say that because I knew it was unfair) This began to change when I started to see that representation in cartoons I liked, and now I can say that I genuinely don’t feel uncomfortable at all with that, because I got used to it. And most importantly, I now enjoy seeing that kind of stories, and really hope that Amity and Luz get together. Like you said, they are really really cute 🥰 (and their current relationship was incredibly well developed)
@@eu4083 I feel the exact same way! Before the Owl House, I was somewhere in between believing everything my church said about homosexuality, and actually forming my own opinions on it. It used to make me uncomfortable to, so the discrimination that my church teached me just made sense; until ya know, I saw it for what it was; discrimination. Then, I saw amazing healthy relationships not just on TV but in real life too, when I got out of my Christian high school and went into a normal college. The Owl House not only stopped me from being something I really didn’t want to be, but it also worked together with a few other factors to write my own gay characters, too! It feels like we’re pretty close to normalizing it, and making people who are against it seem like the weird minority, and that’s awesome ImO!
@@JoeySehn That’s so good to hear! That’s the thing about entertainment: it has the power to change people’s hearts. Many times people try to convince others that discrimination is a bad thing using arguments, but that doesn’t really work. I know that those who suffer injustice have the right to fight it, and it usually leads them to achieve great things (like the women’s right to vote, for example), but this is not enough. It’s important to show people that we are all human, everyone struggles and loves, faces bad and good things... Well, good luck with your story! And I apologize if I wrote something wrong (English is not my mother tongue 😅)
I used to think that I'm a lesbian, but after a year, I've realized that being bisexual is what makes me... me! Watching The Owl House really truly shows representation towards LGBT+ people, and that Luz and Amity are the most relatable to me. Great video Rebecca!🏳️🌈💗💜💙

Thank you for making this video Rebecca! I totally relate to what you said about how happy it makes you feel to see young kids seeing the representation we needed at that age. It gives me so much hope! And even if we didn't have that representation then, we can still enjoy it now :)
I also love that they showed two characters with very different skin tones as love interests. As a mixed queer person I very much appreciated seeing this. People look at me all the time and decide where I’m from and what my identity is all the time. I’ve got people saying I’m Mexican or Filipino. I’m not even a mix of those two. I’m Chinese and Iranian!!!! If people cared so much about my ethnicity and identity maybe they should’ve asked.
@@nqrui2194 I already suspected that I was a lesbian long beforehand but thanks to this episode I thought about it a lot more and did more research. I’ve always been a lesbian but I just didn’t realize it. Does that make sense?
Around the time I first started to Explore my sexuality I randomly found the owl house in My recommended. There couldn’t have been a better time. I live in a homophobic family and as a Lesbian teen This show helped me through so freaking much. I watched it all through my depression and it was the only thing that cheered me up even for just a little. I would write and read fanfic, or even just watch one little episode. I’m so excited that queer rep is in cartoons so that the next generation and so on can be able to access it. Honesty representation is so important and I never thought that Disney would do something like this. I remember watching the episode where Luz and Amity become official Girlfriends and felt like crying out of pure happiness. Thank you so much to Dana and the crew for making this happen. I know so many of the Younger Queer Generation will relate to this too. ❤️❤️❤️
As someone who is not LGBTQ all I can say is this show is wonderful. I used to watch things that did have LGBTQ characters but it was either their entire personality or an excuse to make constant gay jokes and that made me feel weird and even uncomfortable sometimes. But thanks to shows such as The Owl House and She-Ra I became more open-minded and respectful. By treating it as normal it taught me that it is normal.
I'm a bi 11 year old girl and iI was ashamed of it at first but after seeing all these great LGBTQ shows such as owl house, legend of korra, and she ra i feel a lot more accepted :)
I still personally believe - my headcanon, if you will - that Luz has very much picked up that Amity is crushing on her but is deliberately taking it slow because Amity hasn't admitted it yet. Luz says "sorry" when she gets too close to Amity and makes her go COMPLETELY RED in "Wing It Like Witches," implying that Luz knows how Amity gets when she's around her 😆. And the same episode has Luz enthusiastically deciding to carry Amity when she sprains her leg, which is on the verge of "flirting" while still being friendly (Luz knows that Amity would prefer to be carried by her). I could be wrong, of course; maybe Luz will go completely "surprise Pikachu face" when she finds out.
Your pretty spot on man knowing if season two might explore on amity working on her flirting skills and Luz catches up with amity's feelings towards her
Another good thing with Lumity is how the characters are represented We have one androgynous bi who looks more stereotypically bi, without being overboard (pixie cut, tux and tutu, etc.) But we also have a super feminine lesbian As a lesbian, growing up most on TV would be more masculine or butch, feeding stereotypes that that's what lesbians are supposed to look like, and always made me feel as if I look "wrong" or something, so having a lesbian who looks like me is just more validating
7:44 *This. Exactly this. I completely understand and resonate with Amity's crush on Luz, but I could never put it into words. My sister always hates on Amity because she can't understand where the crush came from and thinks her crush on Luz is her only defining trait, but 1: it makes sense why she's in love with her because she's from a place where affection doesn't exist and, 2: logically speaking, when you're in love/have a crush on someone it consumes you and you sort of become that crush.*
As someone who is LGBTQ+ (trans lesbian, nonbinary masc-aligned) the Owl House made me so happy to see. You rarely get representation with Disney, but Owl House completely threw that out of the window. On top of that, the story is genuinely amazing. Owl House did LGBTQ+ representation right.
This is why lgbtq+ people should write their OWN representation stories. When a straight person does it, no matter how good natured or accurate they are, it doesn’t really feel authentic. Love the show and Dana!
Amity and Luz are written as 14 year olds , and as a 14 year old bisexual girl myself it's nice to relate to Luz in almost every way. I love her character and the plot of the show in general and that with the combination of representation in the media is so refreshing and exciting to me :D
Man I adore this show so much and I am frankly amazed that Dana and the crew were able to show us such an amazing universe with so much depth to both its story and well as its characters, with solid queer rep in just one season! It's truly amazing and having Luz and Amity portrayed they way they are is so refreshing and has impacted me quite positively. My younger 13 year old brother is autistic and absolutely loves The Owl House. When Amity's crush is showing he giggles and says the she has a crush on Luz, and treats it no differently than the couples he's more used to. Having characters like Luz and Amity, as well as Shera characters specifically, has made it so much easier to talk about queer relationships to my sibling and I'm so thankful for the Lgbtq+ representation younger kids as well as adults will be able to see themselves in both now and in the future.
My son has been obsessed with the grom fright dance and when the newest episodes came out my my son was so happy for them!!! He didn't ask questions he just accepted that they liked eachother 🥰 (he's 6) Proof that bigotry is taught
@Uncle Terry Hes 6 and its a cartoon? Why is only heterosexual relationships okay for kids to see in cartoons when he is already around lgbtq+ family including his own mother? Sorry dude, you are part of the reason previous generations are failing us.
Amity and Luz are now an official couple! Episode 8 Season 2, Knock Knock Knockin' on Hooty's Door is the Episode where Luz asked Amity out :) They are adorable
Studios are slowly starting to see that the LGBTQ+ Community is becoming one of the new "norms" in the world. As such, they're doing whatever they can to ensure proper representation is given. Loud House has been doing this with pairs like Harold and Howard McBride, Sam and Luna and even background couples like Lainey and Alice. There is even a character who was confirmed to be transgender...but her name escapes me. Next, we've got Cartoon Network showing representation through pairs like Princess Bubblegum and Marceline and RubyxSapphire. Let's hope that this train keeps on chugging forwards...and that society doesn't try to destroy all this hard work because some yakkos tell them it's "evil"
I've watched Loud House, Adventure Time, and Steven Universe and I do like seeing the amount of LGBTQ+ representation in those shows. Distant Lands helped to expand the Bubblegum and Marceline relationship with the episode "Obsidian". I don't recall there being a transgender character in the Loud House.

This push for representation is like a snowball; for such a long time, every attempt to get it rolling was stopped while it was still small. But now that some folks have slipped just enough past the nay-sayers, the snowball has finally gotten rolling. And now, it's picking up momentum, getting both faster and bigger. Some people are still trying to stop it, and they sometimes slow the ball down or knock off a piece, but it's gotten far enough that it can keep rolling. Before long; this snowball is gonna get huge, and the haters will be powerless to stop it.

The best part about it is I didnt see it coming, I almost cried watching grom night, it was so beautifully animated. I wish I had representation like this when I was younger. It took being a grown adult for me to fully embrace my bisexuality.
This representation matters to older folks so much, too. I'm 40. I have kids. They're in the younger target audience of this show. Not only do I get to see a sweet story with queer kids that I wish I would have had as a younger person, I get to be the parent who shares these amazing stories with my own kids, uses them to open conversational doors, and gets to be a nerd about them with my children. We can speculate, write fic, and cosplay and it's just *normal* and not transgressive, like it felt when I was a kid, to have something so inclusive for our family. And in addition, this story is just so wonderful in its representation of parents, too, and the imperfections of adults. As a disabled queer weirdo myself, Eda is a representative character I didn't know I needed until I was crying over her acceptance of her curse and the Owl Beast. It's truly a gem and I hope it gets held up as a trailblazer for years to come and inspires young people and artists to keep expanding what's possible in our media.

Ikr I’m curious how Luz will develop feelings for amity because so far I don’t see any big signs
@@donovan802 Well Dana said she's not into making romantic side plots, so basically Lumity is going to be tied in with the main plot.
@@joelblake5310 OH i didn’t know that. That’s honestly not a bad idea, it’s a great idea actually. Gives more room for the main plot to develop

I'm 23, im not sure how old you are, but the 2000s was rife with homophobia. The homophobia of the 90s and throughout the 2000s was mad stanky.
I’m glad I’m not alone with this mindset of accepting people for who they are regardless of differences🙂
I am still waiting for an asexual or aromantic major character in a cartoon aimed at younger audiences.
Let kids know that it is perfectly fine if they dont want to be in a relashionship, and that its not strange for feeling that way. Which in turn could help give representation to these two often overlooked orientations.

Oh man wasn't that the best grom fight ever
13:09 Dana, when she says this, means that, if they are developing the romantic thread of Luz and Amity, but that this is not going to overshadow the main plot, that is, the plot of mystery and adventure magic, but yes or yes, they will continue the romance of Luz and Amity.
The best part of having a sapphic main couple in this show is the amazing feedback from fans to let Disney know that it's worth it for them, and doesn't have as negative feedback as they thought
Which hopefully paves the way for more lgbtq+ couples involving the main character(s) which aren't just in the final episode
For example, I know many Amphibia fans (myself included) are hoping for Marcanne to be a thing (to the point where I generally forgot it wasn't canon lol) and with positive Lumity feedback, if Matt intends for them to be a thing, Disney will be more willing to let it happen, which is great
I get that people ship the human girls in Amphibia and I respect that but personally I don’t ship any humans😅 you don’t have to date at 13....😶 plus there’s nothing wrong with being just friends too not every group of main characters have to date...just saying...you said Marcy....um just wait for Saturday ok?😅

Listen she shouldn't support the lgb community if she didn't want to just tell her you should respect everyone no matter what
She's young for these tho
@@nqrui2194 I felt that too
Imo yeah to young. Teach it when she is like 12, the samw age where all things related to love is starting to be informed to others

Exactly it's not shoved down our throats or anything. It just happened normally. At least they didn't pull off the good ol he/she is gay at the last episode with no development

I never had any problem with lgbt people, but I hate to admite seeing same sex couples used to make be feel uncomfortable (I though it was weird, though I would never say that because I knew it was unfair)
This began to change when I started to see that representation in cartoons I liked, and now I can say that I genuinely don’t feel uncomfortable at all with that, because I got used to it. And most importantly, I now enjoy seeing that kind of stories, and really hope that Amity and Luz get together. Like you said, they are really really cute 🥰 (and their current relationship was incredibly well developed)
@@eu4083 I used to feel the same pretty much. Then I watched certain anime.

Then, I saw amazing healthy relationships not just on TV but in real life too, when I got out of my Christian high school and went into a normal college.
The Owl House not only stopped me from being something I really didn’t want to be, but it also worked together with a few other factors to write my own gay characters, too!

Your pretty spot on man knowing if season two might explore on amity working on her flirting skills and Luz catches up with amity's feelings towards her
Another good thing with Lumity is how the characters are represented
We have one androgynous bi who looks more stereotypically bi, without being overboard (pixie cut, tux and tutu, etc.)
But we also have a super feminine lesbian
As a lesbian, growing up most on TV would be more masculine or butch, feeding stereotypes that that's what lesbians are supposed to look like, and always made me feel as if I look "wrong" or something, so having a lesbian who looks like me is just more validating
Yayyy u finally posted!! I haven't seen you in awhile!!

Also are we not going to mention the fact that Luz's outfit is the asexual flag ???
Didn't notice that
But I think she's kinda too young to figure that out since asexual is about.. well UK

Yo, i cried when I saw the non-binary character in season two. Like...wow I did not know I needed and wanted representation so badly.
When TOH started airing in my country, I was pretty worried they would cut out scenes of representation and was so relieved to see they left it just the way it was.
Ur the luckiest person ever- I only got to see a little bit of adventure time, Steven universe didn't even air on my tv, a lot of representation is cut off of Craig of the creek, and although lately I didn't rlly watch any Disney stuff ur still lucky
If this show would've come out when I was 12, I wouldn't have felt so much shame about feeling attraction towards girls. I'm so glad that good LGBTQ+ representation like this is gonna help a lot of kids.
Love ur stuff, only owl house TH-cam content creator I really enjoy
3:20 i checked the clip, and even the final product fits perfectly with the song and i love it
Wanna support LGBT in general?
I am glad if you say yes and say:
Jaden-Animation maybe just made this 1 helpful video named 'Being Not Straight',
but others made many videos or even entire Channels!!
'GOP vs Queer' by "Some More News" is just 1 other amazing video, though that guy often tackles Problems and Issues.
But Emma Thorne and Telltale Atheist are FULL-IN:
They cover LGBT-Issues all the time,
as well as Science-Denial and Radical's.
As an asexual I need to thank you for including the Q. Just saying lgbt feels really oof to me and very exclusionary so I'm glad you said lgbtq+
yes FINALLY a video from our queen
keep goin , keep doin all of this , im so thankful for u
this is the video that i SO SO MUCH HOPED FOR , i relate so much to luz and amity and watching this vid just give me hope for my future
We could be listening to Rebecca talk about Amphibia's season 2 finale right now if _someone_ [points at Disney] didn't screw up the airing date
I totally support for Dana Terrence's work! "The Owl House" is the stepping stone of LGBTQ+ representation on Disney Channel!
It's great watching lgbtq+ representation slowly get more obvious in shows, also I relate to amity so much
2:44
Has the same energy as “I love food, just let me write about it” from episode 1
I've missed you Rebecca great video 😊
Fantastic discussion. Happy Pride month!
The fact that the information about the second season being released today, three days later...Right in the middle of Pride Month...is amazing...
They knew what they were doing 😏
I'm a 14-year-old lesbian, so seeing amity obviously crush on luz like that is really important to me, I watched wilw a million times but I'm still shocked when amity blushes and gets flustered around luz. I wish there were cartoons like this when I was younger, but I'm happy to know ill grow up with good lgbtq+ rep
Representation matters. It's not always about the masses but telling stories about characters that matters most XD
I’ve just started watching the owl house with my dad and in the first episode he said “huh, luz doesn’t really look/sound that girly. That’s quite a thing for Disney to do” and I was like just you wait
As someone who took a long, long time to accept their own bisexuality (subconsciously I knew) because of where I live(Bible belt area where all I hear is how it's wrong to the point I break down)... this was nice and I love the representation. Wouldn't mind seeing Ace representation for kids who feel Ace.
Well lilith was confirmed to be aroace in a post hoot, so representation, hell yeah
A new TOH video? I am in
Why does she say LGBTQ+ like a politician
LMAO
I was thinking the same thing, lol
11:13 Amity really was a disaster in Wing it Like Witches and it's honestly adorable lol
I love The Owl House and it helped me discover my identity and I have characters to relate to as well as an amazing story on top of that! I'm glad kids get to have characters like Luz and Amity in their lives now, because there wasn't as much open representation when I was younger.
I'm not even LGBTQ and I just have so much fun seeing it represented in shows like SheRa or The Owl House.
5:59 oh nice! It’s my comment! Always surprising whenever I see it floating around
I'll admit, when it comes to LGBTQ+ representation is Disney cartoons, The Owl House is so far the best interpretation of it.
Omg I love the end with the art!!! Beautiful ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
