animated characters' coming out scenes

This is a compilation I made because I love that we're getting more queer rep in animation these days! (It also served as a thank you for over 500 subscribers!)
These are all the coming out scenes I've seen in animation. There are many queer animated characters who never have coming out scenes, and that's cool too, but there's something important about showing these moments where characters share their truth with the world (particularly when words like 'gay', 'bi' and 'trans' are actually used in kids' shows - shout out to Kipo, The Owl House, and Dead End: Paranormal Park!)
Obviously, we still have a looong way to go, particularly with all the cancellations (so mad we lost Dead End), but it's cool to see how far we've come, even if it's overdue - all these scenes happened in the 2020s! (Benson and May in 2020, and the rest in 2022).
All the shows, characters and identities are shown in the video, but here are a few extra notes:
- Benson's and Yaz's scenes were originally much longer, but the video got copyright-blocked on the basis of them, so I cut them short, added background music, and flipped the Camp Cretaceous scenes to (hopefully) avoid this happening again. Sorry everybody, copyright sucks :/
- I'm aware that Barney's scene might not technically be a coming out scene, given that he says 'everyone at school knows' and Norma goes to school with him, but it definitely feels like one, and was the moment he came out to the audience, so I thought it was a valid one to include!
- I put Yaz as 'mspec' (an umbrella term for people attracted to multiple genders!) because she hasn't been specifically labelled as anything, as far as I know!
- The second Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous scene also features Sammy Gutierrez, another canon sapphic character and Yaz's girlfriend, but it's unclear whether or not she was already out! (Whereas Yaz canonically wasn't until the scene we see in the show, so that scene serves as her coming out to her mother!)
- The audio in the second Camp Cretaceous scene also might confuse anyone who hasn't watched, but basically that scene is part of the ending montage and has a voiceover of Darius, another main character, talking about dinosaurs.
- I extended Norma's first scene to include the bit where she admits she has a crush, not just where she says she's bi, because she accidentally reveals who it is and so technically tells Logs she likes girls before she actually tells him. Also, it's an important part of the whole conversation!
As always, I own nothing except the editing. The clips come from Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts, RWBY, Dead End: Paranormal Park, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, The Owl House, Wendell & Wild, and The Dragon Prince.

I like how everyone here is kinda reluctant and scared to come out and then Luz is just like "oh bi the way I'm bi" and then Gus pulls out the rainbows. people shouldn't have to feel the need to be scared of coming out and Luz is a perfect example of that.
Edit: a lot of people are saying “well that’s not how it is in real life, being scared of coming out is valid”. This is true, however, in my original comment I meant that in an ideal world, people wouldn’t have to be scared of coming out. We do not live in an ideal world, so there are many justified fears in coming out, but Luz’s coming out is exactly what an ideal world’s coming out would look like. Sorry for the lack of clarification.
yeah, the other scenes are very important and realistic and everything, but I also love Luz's coming out being just, full of joy and rainbows! I think it's so important to have representation of different types of coming out!

Also the Benson guy at these start hesitates for a moment and then he just out of the blue says he's gay like none of the stuttering ever happened. It looks like a good cartoon.
Basically 💀 everyone else is so reluctant and Luz is just like “Hey I’m Bi! This is my girlfriend and she’s lesbian, and everyone but my mom basically knew and now that she knows I shall proudly wear a bi pin on my beanie”

I genuily loved how the Owl house portrayed Luz and Amity. There was no focus on it being special or wrong, but instead on their actual relationship developing, and their own character stories. We need more natural representation.
I hope the next generation experience their romantic identies without ever feeling like their in the wrong.
I love them too! I think it's important to have shows that do address our identities and the struggles we face, but it's also important to have shows where that isn't the focus and we just get to exist!
It's most likely because homophobia and transphobia don't exist in the Boiling Isles. Their entire society is different, and they don't seem to have that kind of discrimination. A lot of shows have to add homophobia to a gay character without just letting them be gay.
The Owl House had Luz in an environment where it didn't matter. In fact, the Boiling Isles is Luz's way of being herself, including her bisexuality and neurodivergence. I love that ❤️

The fact that an animated show can make someone feel more safe, loved and accepted than their own parents/most of society can really shows how cruel this world can be
it does. but it also makes me hopeful that we even have shows that can do that. hopefully things will keep getting better

Definitely Norma's coming out scene with her mom. That scene right there is something everyone deserves to have when they are scared to come out to their Moms or to their Dads or to anyone close to them really.
that's one of my favourites, too! it was so well done and felt the closest to my feelings around coming out (the scenario was totally different, but something about it felt really relatable!).
and the instant and unquestioning acceptance and love was so heartwaming! particularly as she recognised it was a big deal and treated it specifically as *positive* rather than neutral (like her child being queer is a good thing, rather than just the 'I don't mind' kind of reaction).

Honestly an underrated coming out scene is in the Rocko's modern life Netflix special, when they've been looking for "Ralph" for ages but then she's like "I'm not Ralph anymore, I'm Rachel" and everyone is just instantly supportive like "Wow that's so cool"

NEVER...EVER feel ashamed of who you are, no matter what; love every part of yourself. In my opinion, the world's a much more interesting place with "strange" people in it.
Look at me; blind in one eye, slightly heavy, still live at home with my parents, lived with a neurological condition since I was 2 weeks old, I'm eccentric, I watch cartoons (despite being thirty-seven,) I believe both Biblical figures AND mythical creatures exist AND I have a reading level that was dubbed college grade since I was eight

I Really need to watch paranormal park as soon as possible, I think this might just be the spark, but everything about this character is so accurate, just saying it out loud feels so good, the first person I cane out to was my cat

idk if it counts but rachel coming out as trans to her dad in rockos modern life static cling made me feel a lot of things. it was 2019 and she was the first trans cartoon character i had ever seen portrayed in a positive light. it meant a lot to me.

@@gaycartoons in Inanimate Insanity (don't know if it counts since it's a webseries), there's three characters confirmed to be part of the LGBTQ+ community (idk if I'm missing one); Paintbrush, Lightbulb, and Bot. However, only Paintbrush had a real coming out scene (Lightbulb's identity as a trans female was confirmed during a livestream, and Bot's pronouns were written on one of her drawings).

As heartwarmingly adorable the Lumity reveal was, I also wished it was spoken, like Luz nervous to say it and Amity giving her encouragement to do so, maybe being the one to suggest something out there for them to do.

Thanks to Disney cutting season 3 short the showrunner had to speed up a lot of things
I think it works better how it is, tbh. It’s so casual in a way I think was really needed. Not every coming out situation will be anxiety-inducing. Sometimes it really is that simple. And narratively, I don’t feel like Luz and Camila have the kind of relationship where Luz would feel nervous about coming out to her. Camila already accepted Luz as she was before she even went to the Boiling Isles. Like, of all the things Camila had to accept about Luz (including basically becoming a mother/caretaker of 6 practically overnight), the most normal of those things is her being bi.
I literally cried so hard during norma and terry’s thing oh my god i literally can’t believe how far queer representation has come

Luz and Norma's were definitely my favorite. Norma coming out was awkward and weird and relieving. Luz coming out was cute and although coming out is really scary TOH showed that, with certain people, it isn't that scary, and showed it more as something nice than something anxiety-inducing. Both felt very nice with Luz's being super sweet and adorable and Norma's being super relatable and just sudden and awkward. But every one of these were great.
Yeah, those are two of my favourites too! Norma's felt so realistic and powerful, and Luz's is just so cute and full of joy, and I love them so much! but yeah, all of these are cool imo :)

i think raul's scene feels the most realistic, kat doesnt really bring up gender, just doesnt ask any questions and treats him like anyone else. you can see rauls reaction to that being positive :) that whole movie dealt with him very nicely, they acknowledged it yet didnt make it his only character trait. i also loved how they showed his mom sticking up for him when people misgendered him, it warmed my heart

My moms reaction to me telling her I’m bi was saying “okay, are you sure?” And her reaction to me saying I’m trans a guy was the usual “you’ll grow out of it” with just a touch of “I can start saying you’re my child instead” and like, a week later it was very clear she either forgot or just didn’t care.
Tldr: all I got out of coming out to my mom as bi and trans was an awkward conversation and some lies.

Terry is so sweet and i was so surprised that they actually canonically mentioned that he's trans. also pretty awesome that one of the main villains of the show isn't transphobic. Viren may be evil, but he has standards.

@@gaycartoons right? it's unfortunate that most cartoons are restricted from mentioning it canonically but a few have been allowed to, and that's great progress. and tbh i really liked Viren in this season. it almost feels like he'll get a redemption arc, which i never really saw coming, considering how much of an asshole he was in the previous seasons. I'm also really enjoying Claudia's villain arc. really cool to see the two basically switch places.
I makes sense actually. Viren's motivations are all about evening the playing field between humans and the other races. To him and claudia, dark magic represents a way to transend the limitations of their birth and become something more. Sure, Callum learned how to use an arcanum, and perhaps other humans could as well, but most elves and dragons think of humans as lesser beings. In his own way I think Viren understands what it's like to be trapped in the limitations others ascribe for you and want to beak free. He sees Terry as someone that wouldn't let others tell him what he could be and transmuted himself into something better. Possibly literally since I don't imagine elves have hormone therapy.

I believe pride is a sin, but I'm not letting bias control my opinion. I think just to hold pride before adulthood or at an appropriate age. This happened to me with Jo from the Lumberjanes, that I was reading something that mentioned she was trans and was confused where that had been said, but when I went back and read the comic again I was like how did I miss this? I know it sounds wrong, but I would like to see a scene where there is a build up to the character coming out to their parents, but then the parents don’t actually accept them, that would be relatable and realistic for many people
I totally understand what you mean! it's important to show some of the harsher realities of our experiences. tbh I think that's been done a *lot* though, just usually in live action? so in some of these animated shows targeting kids, it's important to show the accepting and happy side! i totally get what you mean, though.
I’m not crying. I’m just so happy that the world has gotten to a place where these characters can exist and not be the but of the joke, or that being LGBT would make something wrong with them. I’m so glad that these characters aren’t demonized and that they can exist at all.

Honestly, nobody’s doing it like The Owl House and Dragon Prince, literally so much casual rep in those two shows that simply exist. The Owl House literally has zero homophobia in any form, has strong messages about mental illness that doesn’t stigmatize it, disabled and neurodivergent characters that aren’t portrayed as needing to fixed, but accommodated! I haven’t seen Dragon Prince so I can’t say much about it, but from what I have seen in clips, it’s got just as much rep and is awesome.
they're both awesome! I don't think there's anything wrong with shows addressing prejudice in a sensitive way either, but it is nice the escape that shows like them provide :)
