      @@stoopingfalcon891 In the US, a similar (but not equivalent) line (usually used on men) is "All hat and no cattle." I.e., big impressive cowboy hat but no wealth behind it.
      However, I was wondering if the British phrase didn't also insinuate that the woman had slept her way into her position ("no knickers"). The on-line idiom dictionaries I've looked at do not mention this.

      When I was in Ireland (study abroad), I was on a bus this one time when a mother started yelling at the driver to pull over. I couldn't hear what the driver said, but judging from the type of road we were on and that he didn't pull over right away, my guess is he said he *couldn't* right then.
      He eventually did pull over shortly after the kid threw up all over the floor and the mom started berating him for not pulling over sooner. Jeez, lady. Motion sickness isn't the end of the world.

    Actually had a similar encounter to the last one. Person Ive worked with for a long time who is a single father ran into me in the Walmart, with his daughter. Apparently she was getting her first bra and being a guy he didn't really know whats what, and as he explained latter didn't have many women he trusted to ask. None local at least.
    So he asked if maybe I could help her and teach him a bit about these things. So asked if she was comfortable with that, and she agreed so I helped her out. Ended up going back to his house and teaching her about how to put them on, how it should fit, etc. And gave her father the basics on the subject.
    Not entirely a I don't work here, but felt good to help out either way.

    Back when I was in the US Navy when my ship was deployed to the Mediterranean on a cruise one of the first things we as a crew were told was that when in the various foreign countries that we no longer had our "rights" as American citizens, that we would be subject to the laws of the host countries we found ourselves in. Story 2: My sister works in a school similar to this and before covid the kids would go to the cafe in one of the big supermarkets in our town or to the town centre, and it is an excellent way to help these kids gain independence and learn to deal with normal every day activities, like shopping for the essentials and eating out and stuff like that. What it shouldn't involve is random people calling them names and telling them that they shouldn't be in public because of their disability. I hate people like that. And I hate people who use the not very nice terms for people with learning disabilities, it's disgusting and just because you have a fancy car doesn't mean you can treat people whatever way you want to.

    • @laraazevedo1072
      @laraazevedo1072 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@josepherhardt164 As a brazilian, we understand Spanish enough that we would be able to understand what the person speaking Spanish is trying to say if they talk a little bit slower and don't use slang (but it's not 100%, more like 85% to 90%). But I've heard from some Spanish speakers from the countries around Brazil that they don't understand most of what we say when we are speaking Portuguese, unless they live near the border. And usually near the border both the Portuguese speakers and the Spanish speakers use a mix of Portuguese and Spanish that we call Portunhol or Portuñol. It's not an actual language, it's basically each one speaking the words from the other language they know mixed with the language from their own country, but with a fake spanish accent if they're brazillians - idk if the spanish speakers try to do a fake brazillian accent, maybe they try too (think an english speaker who wants to say an world in italian, but instead of saying it in italian they say it in english with a fake italian accent lol)
      Now, I don't know about Portugal and Spain, because Portugal's accent is really different from Brazil's accent (think the difference between an american accent and a really heavy scottish accent, while the differences of accent within Brazil are like usual american accent vs texan accent vs usual british accent vs northern english (the country) accent).
      We brazillians, since we don't have much contact with portuguese (the country) media, we are not used to their accent, so sometimes we don't understand what they're saying unless they slow down a little. After some minutes/hours that effect vanishes and we get used to their accent and understand almost everything (and then the only difficulties are the words, like the meaning of pants in the american vs british english).
      So, because of that, I have no idea if the portuguese people can understand spanish as easily as we brazilians do. We'd have to get a portuguese person to answer. I also have no idea if a spanish person understands (portuguese) portuguese, since it's a different accent, maybe it makes it easier or harder for them to understand?

      @@laraazevedo1072 Wow. Thank you so much for the detailed explanation and commentary! It does make sense that Brazil border communities (on both sides of the border) would evolve a common-set-of-words dialect; I had just never thought of it that way. It is interesting that, sometime in the past Spanish and Portuguese diverged and did not stay a single language. I mean, the Iberian peninsula is only so large. On the other hand, there's Basque, a language so unique no one has to date found a link between it and the Indo-European languages, and that survived safely in northwest Spain. Had I the opportunity to do things all over again, I might have become a linguist, or perhaps archaeologist. :)

    S 3: Raj : A manager elsewhere comes to a deptt store to shop on the way home. 45, dressed smartly in a suit. A Karen approaches him for help with her shopping list and won't take no for an answer. Realizing it's futile to try, he says OKAY, come with me and starts trotting. She has a triumphant smile that quickly vanishes as she is led twice, huffing and puffing round the huge store. Finally he stops near the entrance where they have a display of primers. Takes out an alphabet book and loudly tells her, "since you find it difficult to understand things, here, this should help. start with this". And wagging his finger in her face , takes out a color within the lines and says equally loudly, "and if that book is too difficult, start with this"
    At this point employees are going weak kneed, stuffing kerchiefs into their mouths, running into a nearby store room and laughing loudly. Customers have huge grins on their faces. Unable to meet their eyes, red faced and bug eyed Karen gives out a primeval screech and does the run of shame from the store to her car!
    When he checks out a bit later, many employees gather to watch with awe this man who destroyed a Karen.

    I can't speak anything but English and bad English, however, the times I have been to another country (France, Belgium and the Netherlands) I always tried to learn these things: toilet, please, thanks and have a good day. You don't have to be fluent or know enough to converse as nearly everywhere there are people who know English, however, showing the natives that you cared enough to try learning their lingo will get you further than you might think.

    Usually when I am in a store and I need help it's because I'm short and everything I need is up to high for me to reach. When I need help and I can't find any employees I dread having to ask anyone for help, I don't want to bother anyone. I usually just ask to borrow someone's height lol. Love your videos Peace and love to you and your family 💙💚💙💚💙💚

      I, for one, am always happy to reach things down for people. My late wife used to summon me with, "I need a tall person!" I kinda miss that and I'm glad I can still be of service.

    A federal officer in Brazil? 10 years ago and the results could have been tragic for Karen. The federal officers in Brazil were mostly a paramilitary force called BOPE. Those guys were trained to be badasses who would mainly shoot first and ask questions if you happen to survive. They are basically allowed to cause grievous bodily harm for what Karen did. Luckily she only got arrested.

    • @GhostBear3067
      @GhostBear3067 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Was/is the BOPE federal? I always thought it was specific to Rio de Janeiro. I grew up in Salvador so I could be mistaken.

  • @ShadowMoon878
    @ShadowMoon878 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Karen in Brazil was lucky that Federal Officer is not a member of Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (BOPE) from Rio. They have a license to kill and have been known to shoot first and ask questions later. One of the BOPE officers saved my life during the Rio olympics. I got chased by robbers wielding machetes one night and i just screamed for help while runnjng away. This officer just came out of nowhere and started shooting them with a submachine gun.

    Had an awsome moment the other day. Need help finding something. Asked this guy who had a lanyard and I'd that look almost identical. Store doesn't have a spacric dress code. Guy got upset and said I don't work here man. I told him I apologize the lanyard made him look like he did. Laugh and told him I would hide that when I went in a store. 2 days later see the guy agian and he recognized me and waved me down. Told me he started tucking his lanyard in his shirt and hasn't gotten stopped and thanked me for the tip. Hahaha made my day.

    Last story is awesome. I am 6' 2". And from time to time I get asked to help. Most of the time it is to reach something or to lift something a little heavy by an elderly person. Yes I help because that is what I was tought, but the person asking is always kind and polite in asking too.

    I don't think the uncle would have physically intervened in the ice cream shop in that particular circumstance. I'm sure he was confident that his niece, having passed the physical requirements for WP, could have cold-cocked the Karen if she felt it necessary. All Uncle wanted to do was get the Karen thrown out.

    Raj, it sounds, like was in Denton. While the town has some of the sweetest folks you'll ever meet. They seem to have more than their share of Texas transplants that firmly believe 'courtesy' is just a spice in the spice rack and they never touch the stuff. Raj is a class act for handling that alleged person so well. The earlier phrase, fur coat with no knickers is a perfect fit for that gal too!

    My job i also meet tourists and some speak english. Now here is fun part, if person entitled and rude i speak when very broken english and only few wordrs and then pretend that i don't understand them. This because my collective bargaining agreement says that if my employer wants me to use english they must pay me for it. They don't pay for it, so i can do what I described and they can't do anything for it or union will take to court.
