Hi Robert, how do you think Tesla's pricing mix is going to be played out once the Model Y is made in Germany? Currently a Model 3 Standar Plus costs in the USA $33,690 whereas the exact same model in Europe, due to shipping costs and import taxes is about $58,000 (€49,000). What Tesla will do when they are offering an USA imported Model 3 vs. a locally made Model Y... Thanks and keep it up!
Well done Robert and Ben. I could imagine Tim Dodd continually tapping you on the shoulder to remind you to use metric units of measure. Also, what is adequately large in the USA is monstrously big in Europe.
Old news. The Octovalve is introduced in the later Model 3’s and taken over 1 at 1 in the Model Y. Maybe you heard this on Munro, but he compared an old first version M3 with the model Y. But all these things have already been upgraded in the 3.
Martin Hoogenraad You got it backwards. The Model Y got the heat pump first and later they modified the model 3to include a heat pump, larger frunk (without grocery hooks), wireless phone charging, and a USB C port (some of these Ben highlighted as differences). I think the real reason Ben didn’t mention it is, living in Southern California, he doesn’t need to heat the car so doesn’t care how inefficient a resistive heater is.

Biggest reason to go for the Y over the 3 in the UK when it's out is the fact that it will be made by the Germans. They won't let the misaligned panels come out of the factory like mine has which Tesla say is 'within Tolerances'.
If there are improvements to the German made Teslas it'll be because they've improved the largely automated production line. Automation is the reason for poor quality issues, not nationality
@@rushja non-existent quality control is the reason for poor quality. You'd get fired in Germany if you let a car with scratched paint leave the factory, for american Teslas that's just standard.
@@tommihommi1 So you're saying that the person responsible for the Tesla factory in Germany has a different mandate to the US factory because "that's how the Germans do it?"
@@rushja as the cars there will be built primarily for the German and other European markets, yes. Else people would be refusing delivery all the time based on quality issues, where American Tesla owners mostly shrug and pay anyways.
@@tommihommi1 I agree that German car manufacturers have traditionally had a higher quality standard. But Tesla are not a German car manufacturer. They have a hugely automated process and that's why you get imperfections. You can't stop the line and reject the panel because it's a robot doing the welding and cutting. The Chinese factory was a big improvement in robot design and therefore an improvement in quality. The German factory will be the same improvement probably. Nothing to do with Claus being a better panel beater or German customers, who buy plenty of 'dodgy American' Teslas already btw
Yeah, hilarious..... He paid almost as much as my car cost me - to allow his car to do some of the driving for him......! You couldn't make it up.........!!
Average American income is getting on for double what other countries that think they are developed get. Taxes are different, real estate is different, disposable income is different.
I’m a little (more than a little) disappointed in this comparison review. I will name them: sentry mode is NOT specific for the Y, it’s also standard on the 3, as well as summon mode. Also fastcharging 250kWh is not specific Model Y, it’s also standard on the 3. Also he digs in deep on the screen and the way to find superchargers, but the review - as he said - would be for explaining wat’s different between the Y and the 3. And the screen with all the options is exactly the same for both the Y and 3. What he forgot are some important differences , like: de Y has a heatpomp for heating and the 3 NOT what makes the Y a little more efficient during spring- and winter times. Although: the Y is less efficient due to its shape so in the end, the 3 is more efficiënt and a little faster. Also the Model 3 has “auto dimmed outside mirrors” witch are not available on the Y. Also the seats in de Y are positioned higher. Also the mirrors in the sun visor are different in the Y and the 3. The 3 has a “on call” emergency / help button next to the hazard button in the roof, the Y has not. The Y can tow more than the 3; the 3 is limited to 950 kgr and the Y (i think) at 1.400 of 1.600 kgr. You can buy the Model 3 as a 7 seater, the 3: impossible. The newest version of the 3 has an even smaller frunk, possebly because they will fit a heatpomp in The 3 in the near future to make it even more efficient. So there are some differences that are not mentioned in this review but can be dealbreakers for buying the one or the other.
I agree that this video is poorly done. He missed most of the key points beyond volume comparisons. Regarding your comment ,in the real world the model Y is looking a little more efficient than the 3. Lots of efficiency improvements in the Y that haven't made it into the 3 yet. Munro scoffed at Tesla's claim that the cars share 75% of parts. The Y is considerably more modern than the current 3.
Fabulous idea to have local presenters instead of someone traveling long distances. Less energy usage for the channel and better for the planet 🌎 🌍 🌎 I do love Robert’s style of presentation and hope to keep seeing him in many future videos.
ROBERT you always find a way! And no jet CO2 was emitted. Maybe there's a new line for movies endings? No animals were injured in the making of this film nor was any CO2 emitted... Thanks
Great episode, Robert and Ben! I ordered my Model Y on July 16th. I ordered the same trim as you did, Ben, and in Pearl White with the Induction wheels. I also included the tow package. Initially, I was going back and forth on which EV I wanted to buy. But, in the end, I decided on a Tesla for all the tech, the FSD, over-the-air updates and the Supercharging infrastructure. I need a hatchback, so the Model Y will be a good fit for me. It'll be a financial sacrifice for me but I'll have it paid off in 5 years. I'm excited! I haven't been this excited about a car since I bought my first new car back in 1986 - a 1986 Toyota Celica GTS hatchback in charcoal blue metallic. Thanks, guys! All the bast!!
@@Daniela-pr7rz I actually pushed the delivery date back to mid-November because I want to insure that my Model Y will include the new (single) aluminum casting (on the bottom floor pan of the car) that Tesla's Fremont plant just put on line. I learned from Sandy Munro on Munro Live (a TH-cam channel) that the single casting will give the Model Y added stability and reduced vibration in certain driving conditions. Before that, it was built with a 2-piece casting. I'm NOT going to do anything crazy with it, I just thought it would be nice to have that new design/build improvement for my car. I plan to keep this car for the long term. I'm nearing retirement and want to have it all paid for by then. About 3 weeks after I ordered my Model Y, Tesla contacted me stating that it would be ready for me by late September or early October. I currently reside in the Tampa Bay area (Florida). Cheers!
@@martialman.4563 Its a crossover. A "mini SUV" as some would call it. The differences are vague, but the ride height and ground clearance are the biggest defining factors. Some of us want the hatch versatility with the compact, low-to-the-ground feeling of a sporty sedan. In the US, hatchbacks are also much cheaper than crossovers because they are less popular.
I'm guessing that uninterrupted roof is only possible with extra bracing and reinforcement in the floor, which is included in the Y's ride height. I agree that endless glass would be sweet in a hatchback, but I don't imagine its practical without some hefty engineering ($$$).
@@burton926 My 3 door Yaris has more ground clearance than a model Y. I do get your point about cross dressers though, not sure what it is you can call it a cross.
Great to have Ben presenting on Fully Charged. You saved a bit of CO2 by avoiding that flight, Robert. Might be a good idea to continue this post-COVID (although of course we want to meet you in person for Fully Charged Downunder!)

@@JohnnyZenith Yeah. I'd be surprised if this car is allowed the way it currently is in half of Europe considering how buggering around with a console is considered a distraction.
Yeah. I can imagine the looks my wife would give me if she wanted to open the glove box or adjust the air vents. I wouldn't need air con, her icy stare would be chilly enough. 😅
@@sepez Given it's the same as the Model 3 (exactly the same with respect to the screen), and every country accepts it - and the recent German court case ruled in *favour* of Tesla, despite how many outlets reported it) I don't think the Y will have significant issues. Not least because it does have manual controls for 'essentials' (although I agree that there are one of two additional settings that I would like to have available via the steering wheel buttons, etc)
Currently have a Nissan Leaf and considering a Model 3. We have a Border Collie who is magnetically attracted to puddles of mud. He's currently the main sticking point so waiting a year or two for the Y might be the smart move..
Great episode! I've long thought that more collaborations from other TH-camrs would be good for Fully Charged. The only improvement would have been Bens name in the title and maybe a short chat between Ben and Robert? Thanks to Ben for the words Chuffed, Boot and Bonnet. Always funny to hear an American saying English phrases!
Wow, that was a nice surprise. Really appreciate Ben giving some thought to his language and speaking to an audience outside of America. Nice comparison!
The seating position and roof height difference is significant which is why I traded in my model 3 for the Y. I no longer have to fold myself over like a pretzel to get into or out of the Y. In addition to the added roof height, the front seats are on risers that give you about a 6 inch boost in seating height. Now the bottom of my legs actually touch the seat for added support. Out the door here in Virginia, I paid $53k for the dual motor model Y (stock, no FSD, no wheel upgrade). Did he mention voice commands? Ben is a big guy. See how easy it was for him to get into the Y just before the 15 minute mark? I had FSD on the 3 and I never used summon. The only thing I miss is the FSD lane changes. And for how incomplete FSD is, I didn't mind NOT paying the extra $8k! I drive about 150 miles/day for Lyft and the extra room in the Y for luggage, or groceries, or strollers, or walkers and the ease for passengers to get in and out, make it worth it for the Y. Again, on his summary, he missed saying how much easier it is to get in and out!
Well chuffed, PMSL! Joking aside, this direct comparison has been a great collaboration with Ben Sullins. A big shout out to Team Sullins for the back to back comparison👍
Its surprisingly compact by US standards, but then again the most popular vehicle here is a Ford F150. And yes, people parallel park those in the city to get to work...
great that ur cutting back on ur expenses of travel ! i guess that means that we little folk can feed ourselves whilst still being informed by ur channel without as much of our donations !!!
Generally a good review however, you failed to talk about the major improvements made in the Y from the 3. Octovalve heating and cooling and the mega casting of the frame would be very important to mention dont you think? Also is it really the same ride? In a wider car that rides much higher doesn't that make a difference? You are in a unique position to talk about each car since you own them both.

In one of Ben's videos he made a good attempt at saying Jaguar, and not Jagwaar. 😆 Of course Ben also features as one of the trio in "Our Ludicrous Future", where amongst many other things [but mainly SpaceX and Tesla - other rocket companies and EV techs are available], they'll occasionally attempt fine to hilarious British accents while talking about British tech.
Well done Ben, very slick presentation and a great idea to compare it directly with the model 3. Great idea Fully Charged to use local knowledge and local talent. Not to belittle the devastation Covid-19 has had on humanity but at least you are able to find some benefit. Bravo on air miles saved & CO2 saved from entering the ecosystem of our planet.
As a cyclist I'm not a fan of tinted windows in cars. I can't see if anybody is in the car when it is parked on the side of the road so I don't know how much space I should leave in case they open a door on me when I cycle past.
Edouard Tavinor, always allow a car door’s distance just in case, and check if the front wheel is moving - an indication the driver, who hasn’t seen you or is ignoring you, is about to pull out.
We all know the quality control of US made Teslas are abysmal, whereas the chinese made ones are far ahead of any other carmaker in China. The M3 has 0.7 quality complains out of every 10k car made and number 2 on the list has 4.2. I'm hoping Tesla will do equally well with cars made in the Berlin factory.
As it's similar in many ways to the Model 3 (including interior), it's very good. It also has the benefit of being family/kid friendly as it's easy clean. And very comfortable. The fundamental engineering (suspension, ride, regen, brakes, performance etc), is very impressive, and regarding exterior, paint etc, we personally have no issues (on our Model 3). For what you get, it is very cheap. Basically, as with anything, it boils down to whether you like it or not.
@@cbromley562 well I have been driving a lot in a S, I have to say the interiors where a big disappointment for a car that in Europe costs around 100k... I understand that in the US have lower standards, but the comparison with similar priced cars from mercedes bmw and porsche is abysmal...
@@emilianosc335 OK. You pay for excellent technology and performance with a Tesla...plus regular over-the-air updates and improvements, ensuring the car remains fresh and relevant. Also, the very reasonably priced supercharger network adds incredible value. Most S owners I speak to (at supercharger etc), value these attributes, and Mercedes class luxury is further down their list of priorities. We sat in a Model S when we bought our Model 3 last year, and I have to say that it had plenty of luxury for our taste...relevant luxury. Mercedes, BMW, etc, are firmly in the luxury bracket, and price band, but the bling conceals failings in range and efficiency, lack of software updates and charging infrastructure. The Taycan is what it is, and if you’re willing to pay well over £100,000, a compelling car. But still no FSD etc. Depends what your priorities are.
The concept of distribution of work makes sense. But please let the US guy use international metrics (or at least blend in a unit conversion) instead of traditional US metrics. Even the US has adapted international unit system. It would be very much appreciated when US youtubers accept that most of the people on the planet have moved away from inches, feet, psi, yards, ounze, pounds, gallons, pints, BTU, long tons, short tons, nautic miles etc.
It appears that the video production work was done by Ben / his team, rather than by FC? So it's not clear whether the agreement would have let FC re-edit (even to add overlays) the video?
@@logicalChimp that would be rather unwise for fullycharged as it is their channel. It would have been so easy for Ben to add this information and everyone would have been fine.
Great video of a great car. Love "sentry mode", I think all cars should have it. Apparently "summon" in the UK is a waste of time. Just got to make the car affordable now and I'll be sorted. I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon so I'll stick with my 300 mile range Kona.😅
I think the summon mode in the UK is severely restricted due to regulations - the car is only allowed to move a couple of metres without someone in it - which is why it's not really worth it in the UK atm. Currently it's only really useful to move it forwards/backwards out of a tight parking space, but not much more. Maybe the rules will change and then Tesla will be able to unlock the full summon mode for UK cars.
@@SpottedCreeper @Alan Easthorpe the government is looking to be the first European country to allow full self driving so in the near future it might not be useless.

I hope other business, as well as in other industries, pay attention and truly strive to treat their customer bases with similar symbiotic respect ☮️
Whoever set Windows naming convention in place is obviously working for Tesla lol Ugly front end, to my eyes. I get that it is stream lined and cost saving but surely the design could be nicer
Also, the frunk lid gap is a debris magnet if you don't garage your car. It should have been designed so the the hood overlaps the sides and front instead of just coming up short.

Saving for a Model 3 AWD, and I can't wait. The voice control feature is a game changer for me; I have the "just right" subtype of OCD, and touchscreens and switches/knobs can be problematic for me at times. Seeing videos showing how well it works makes me like this car even more.
Sorry to say I stopped watching Ben's videos after the fully charged show in USA. His very up him self. Cuts people off when they chat and has a real chip on his shoulders. Likes the sound of his own voice.
On the contrary, I started following him AFTER the FC panel. He was the only one who wasn't showing disdain and dismissive about anything non-Tesla related. He was the only one who was level headed in this discussion and sympathetic with Chelsea Sexton trying to veer away from an Tesla exclusive and US centric discussion.
James Moore i thought the same but only until recently. Then i realized he has much deeper understanding of a lot of things going on than most of us. Dont misunderstand his comments as shallow or selfserving. I think he rather tries to not take away from a discussion but always only adds to it if he sees it appropriate. Watching him throught that lense i actually i wish he would share more of his thoughts, in his podcast with joe scott and tim dodd for example. He always just makes "fitting" little jokes an comments to keep tim in the picture but he could add so much more context to a lot of things
This episode had ZERO of the quirky humor that I demand from fully charged!!! Not even a silly face... sigh. Oh, hey, also why don’t you drive the car a little?
One of the points emphasised here was that the driving experience was so similar to the model 3 that in a comparison of the two (which is what this was), it wasn't a good use of time to compare the driving similarities. However, for someone who has never watched Fully Charged, maybe having a video that completely stands alone without the need to watch a model 3 vid is better. I liked this one.
These videos are to show the features of electric cars. They dont discourage or recommend buying any specific car so there is nothing to be biased about
He's the owner of both cars, so the differences called out are exactly that. If you watch his videos, you'll see that he doesn't shy away from criticising bad decisions by Tesla, either.
Love seeing Ben Sullins and Fully Charged collaboration! You should get Ben's Our Ludicrous Future co-hosts Joe Scott and Tim Dodd on too for renewable energy and reusable rockets! :)
Strange how quickly the M3 and MY have become ugly. When I first saw the 3 I quite liked it, then it became ok, now I see an ugly car, particularly the front view. Someone likened it to a squashed frog. Now I can’t get that image out of my mind!
The model 3 comes stock with the wireless charging pad and model Y c/a USB ports I just took Delivery of the 3 last week and it had it also the 3 now has the same frunk as the Y
David Sierra Loyola after checking the fronk doing the same think as he dose in the video using the Charging bag standing up as a reference, I can say it is not as deep as the Y but it is the same design with the bottom having the same Ridges. Also the same sharp as the Y.

I think a car should have the essential handling options for safety reasons as physical knobs and sticks to the drivers disposal ready at all times. In bad weather it is lethal to go to the menus to find the windscreenwiper adjustment. Americans don't think about that with there wider streets but here in Europe it's much more tiny, espacially when your car is 3 inch wider. Thats a huge difference by the way. And the soundvolume adjustment has to be a knob that i can feel and turn blindly. Has anyone taken an rapsbery pi added some knobs and buttons and put it via an api into the tesla computer yet? That would be an afterparts feature worth a 1000$ instead of oppening the trunk.

@@logicalChimp he wanted to adjust the speed of the windscreenwiper. And thats only possible in the menu, which is a shame. Using a large screen and loosing control over your car is forbidden in germany. I would say rightfully. That guy ditched his car in the side of the road.
@@sebastianmuller1210 He wanted to adjust the speed of the intermittent wiper - but as the judge pointed out (or Tesla did, and the judge agreed - forget which) he could have used the voice controls, he could have used the manual stalk to trigger it manually... and he *should* have pulled over if he felt he had to use the touch screen. And yes, on my older car I did have to pull over sometimes if the rain was too bad, because I didn't even have the option for a faster wiper - it is a valid option. That said, that is - possibly - one function that should be added to the thumb-wheel controls on the wheel, so you don't have to dig through the touchscreen... That said, I also think Tesla should produce a 'button bar' that functions like the Media Keys on a laptop, that people could buy if they want more hardware controls - magnetic clip (or similar) to the back of the tablet, plug into a USB socket, and could work with the current software (may need OTA patch, but minor). If people want hardware buttons, they can buy the bar, and if not they don't have to.

So satisfied to see such beautiful collaborations between great youtubers out there.
You should have done the review, haha.
I'm a bit disappointed in your review of this review. 3/10
I have been watching Ben’s videos for years. GREAT CHOICE, Robert and team!
The delivery day for my aunts model 3 is either this week or next week. I can’t wait to see it. It’s white by the way
Fabulous idea to have local presenters instead of someone traveling long distances. Less energy usage for the channel and better for the planet 🌎 🌍 🌎
I do love Robert’s style of presentation and hope to keep seeing him in many future videos.
I was wondering around what date do you expect to get it?
Cheers!

I rather see a Model 3 hatchback, preferably as a sort of mini Y with a similar roof and flat rear bench.
Model Y is model 3 hatchback. Or did you mean 3 door hatchback?
Agreed. Hot hatch now, pretty please.

Great review, not a fan of Bens Teslanomics channel but thought this was a really well detailed video. Top work Ben 👍

Would have been nice to hear something about the overall quality for 68k...
That’s the reason we have proper car reviewers that don’t focus on mostly on company like Ben

I unsubscribed Ben Sullins a long time ago! It's all about me-me-me-me-me-me!! - A TH-camr with a bigger ego than Ben is hard to come by, it's exhausting to watch.... :-/
so you watched this and all you heard was Ben talking about himself?
Amazing review, thank you Ben and Robert with team.. Please do more of those...
It has automatic wipers
Volume and a myriad of other options can be controlled via steering wheel multi function wheels
Ben missed a few things in his review of his wife's car
As an American, I wish we had converted to metric as well
Alas we are a young country still in puberty
Wiper controls exist, the german guy lost his court case for not using them and deciding to mess around in the touch screen instead
@@logicalChimp i agree. Especially on the hardware button bar.
Dear Fully Charged,
1. The production quality of your work is exceptional
2. Are the people of the USA now ready for a smaller hatchback? They seem to love hatchbacks, but haven’t really worked out that you can attach them to smaller vehicles 😂
3. How many carbons do you think that “the new way” has saved?
4. As much as I love Robert, having an actual owner review a car adds some depth that a reviewer may not be able to show.
