    The drummer uses what's called a "traditional grip". You mostly see rock drummers use a "matched grip". Some use both, depending on how much power is needed.

    The way Steve Smith is holding his drumsticks is the way they taught my brother in band class. Smith is a well-trained jazz drummer as well as a rock drummer. His group Vital Information, which started as a side project, has done several jazz albums worth hearing.

  • @artsilva
    @artsilva 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Steve Smith, the drummer is using a "traditional" grip vs. the "match" grip most drummers use now, he occasionally uses match grip but his foundation is traditional jazz drumming.
    The Traditional grip is old school and still a thing in Jazz and classical Big Band music where drum kits don't get very big.

    "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" is a song performed by Journey, recorded for their album Frontiers and released as a single on January 5, 1983. It peaked at #8 for six consecutive weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Top Tracks chart.

    This music video brings back so many memories. It’s got a little cheese, a bit over dramatic but the song is
    so strong that it works even today. Perry doesn’t just hit the big notes but has this plaintiff sound in his voice that
    is irresistible. Legendary band

    P.S it’s known as a “traditional grip” that the drummer is using. Very few rock drummers use that style of grip. It’s used more commonly by jazz drummers.

    The way he's holding the drum sticks is called the traditional grip. It's commonly used by jazz drummers, but also used in more popular music by drummers like Stewart Copeland (Police) and Mitch Mitchell (Jimi Hendrix Experience).

    • @RustyHinge
      @RustyHinge 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most young drummers are taught to hold their drumsticks like that. It's for finesse, not power - like you say, traditional.

  • @t74guard78
    @t74guard78 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fun reaction to watch. Steve Smith is the drummer, some of the fastest hands out there. That is how he got his nickname, "Machine gun." Back in the day, a lot of drummers held the drumstick in their left hand like he was. I think they were taught to hold it that way. He didn't always hold it like that. It was during those times that more and more drummers started holding the drumstick the same way with both hands. I never could figure out why drummers use to hold it like that in their left hand. Maybe for some songs, it was easier to play it like that.

  • @sherryarflin726
    @sherryarflin726 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    He’s holding the drum stick in his hands like that because that’s the way you were taught to hold them back in the day. It’s the correct way but most drummers today hold them between thumb and index. I guess it’s just what you were taught and what’s comfortable for you. Great video!

  • @Ur_mother4738
    @Ur_mother4738 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That grip the drummer uses is called traditional grip. It’s traditionally used by people in marching bands and jazz drummers, it’s pretty comfortable but not usually used for rock songs like this.

    Steve Perry has bonefide PIPES man. That guy is an instrument with his vocals. And I understand exactly what you say about open, because that is what singer coaches call it too. It is letting the diaphragm control the notes perfectly and leaving the throat open, which means he is classically trained and has a really good set of lungs and vocal chords to boot. Fantastic singer!
    I LOVE this song! I wish Journey would have done more heavier stuff like this.

    The song is about Journey firing a member of the band, Nigel Tuffnal, who was the co-lead guitarist. His 30 minute guitar solo at the bands show in Tokyo in 1983 is legendary. Nigel was eventually told to go his Seperate Ways, and he returned to his previous band.

    The way Steve Smith (the drummer) held his sticks is the technically correct way to hold your drum sticks. That's because he was actually a classically trained jazz drummer that by chance ended up in a rock band. The free hand style you are used to seeing in most bands is usually (not always) used by drummers who learned coming up in garage bands who never had classical training.

    Re: the drummer. I learned to play the drums in elementary school (in the 80s) and I was taught to hold the drumsticks like that at first. We were told to hold the left stick like that. And it is rare to see someone doing that in a band. I stopped doing it after a while because it wasn't comfortable and I found it easier to hold the drumsticks between my thumb and index finger.

    • @theidajawho

    Woot. I just checked my list and this is my #17 all-time favorite song. 😂 Honestly, I thought it was in my top ten and it just shows you how stupid keeping lists is. But these are the things I do. I admit, after 50 it gets ridiculous anyway. Ranking movies is one thing, but songs are only about 5 minutes. Somehow I think that makes it infinitely harder to judge between songs you love. Anyways, it's definitely my favorite Journey song and if I counted it as a power ballad, which I don't, it would be my favorite but my favorite song I consider a power ballad you already did "Still Loving You" by Scorpions which is my #19 all-time. Life is complicated. 🤦🏽‍♀️
