When I was in my 20s my mom begged me to go with her to Sam Goody to get Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys CDs because she didn't want to be "the old lady" in the record store. Now I am in my 40s and I had to investigate (and fall in love) with Billie Eilish's music (In my mother's honor) and tomorrow is the Grammy awards and I am cheering on Wet Leg for best new artist. Joni Mitchell's "Good Friends", Dog Eat Dog's opening track and first single. Mitchell's choice of Michael McDonald on vocals. The video of Good Friends is very creative with Joni and her then bass playing husband, Larry Klein (producer of many singer's albums) together. To me the video is very reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Leave Me Alone" video. Pretty different and cool video for the timez! Michael also does background vocals on the song "Tax Free" off the same album.

Yesssss!!! Back when sampling other music was a compliment and allowed, I loved the earliest of rap music, it was super fun and those beats they'd sample... effin awesome. Miss it.
This was Michael McDonald's first single from his first solo album. He had been a member of the Doobie Brothers band, they weren't brothers, just brothers in doobie 😉. When he joined the band, their sound changed to a more soulful sound because of his voice and he wrote the songs. I remember him saying at the time about this song, it was black radio that saved him. The white audience abandoned him with this, if it hadn't been for black radio, the song and the album would have gone nowhere. As it turns out it's a classic.
I'm a stagehand and worked one of his tours a few years ago. I got to help set up his piano for the show. He's still got the chops; it was a great show.

This was one of the great periods of music. It was a time when all the races merged and some of the best music in the world was heard. I grew up on it and there will never be another period like it.
I agree. I had the best childhood growing up. We didn’t have a lot of toys didn’t even have a toy box because we didn’t have any toys to put in it. But we played outside and rode our bikes from sun up to sundown. I go back to that time in my life any day.
I feel sorry for kids these days who are so influenced and messed up from social media. Can’t imagine seeing all this insane crap on TikTok when you’re not even a teenager and how it would affect you. Parents have to be stronger than ever.
all I can say is you guys are 'COOL'....I'm 73 years old. I've been a musician for most of my life and back in the day, me and so many of my friends sat and listened in awe to the black artists of the day. Its wonderful when music brings us together as we always should be. When we see each other truly as brothers and sisters there is no limit to what we can learn and enjoy.

The video of Good Friends is very creative with Joni and her then bass playing husband, Larry Klein (producer of many singer's albums) together. To me the video is very reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Leave Me Alone" video. Pretty different and cool video for the timez!

This was Michael McDonald's first single from his first solo album. He had been a member of the Doobie Brothers band, they weren't brothers, just brothers in doobie 😉. When he joined the band, their sound changed to a more soulful sound because of his voice and he wrote the songs. I remember him saying at the time about this song, it was black radio that saved him. The white audience abandoned him with this, if it hadn't been for black radio, the song and the album would have gone nowhere. As it turns out it's a classic.

I've been a musician for most of my life and back in the day, me and so many of my friends sat and listened in awe to the black artists of the day. Yeah, it's great to know younger people like the music of an earlier time. I would be ecstatic if they visited the Grand Canyon and then listened to Ferde Grafe's Grand Canyon Suite. It is a true classic from the early 1900's. Grofe put to music what the eyes can see.
