Incredible how fast is the development of nvme drives. Couple months ago I bought WD Black SN850x 1TB and Samsung 980 pro 2TB both gen4, to replace my aging SSD-s. And now these gen5 run almost double the speed, just like that.

You will never see that speed, as the nand dies all have the same speed of 1,5GB/s, everything above that is just marketing lies. Try copying 1TB over to the drive and see what consistent speed you get.

Gen 5 drives don't offer any advantages over fast gen 4 drives for home PCs. You won't ever take advantage of 10-12k mb read/write speeds. Gen 5 drives get very hot too so you really need beefy heatsinks and airflow. The Crucial T700 is probably the best Gen 5 drive so far but I'm regretting getting the 4tb variant of it.

Honestly after watching this review I am more interested in the Team Group Cardea considering the performance and you can buy a 2TB version for less than $100.

Nope no Gen 5, but I like what more Gen 5 drives on the market do for Gen 4 prices!! YAZZZ!

You should test the 2TB gen4 versions! there are speed difference between all manufacturer's 1TB and 2TB drives, so You choose the slower gen4 to compare with gen5

im curious about one of these gen 5 drives in a gen 4 slot. Would the temps be cooler than a gen 4? would it max out the gen 4? im curious how it would perform. My laptop has a gen 3 but id love to get a new nvme with more storage and it only makes sense to use a gen 4 but would there be a down side?

      Exactly what I’m wondering

Im a bit disappointed that ever since pcie gen 3 drives, there's been more focus on sequential R/W. But its latency and IOPS that make the biggest difference for interaction in more common scenarios.

Can't really call that SSD good, as it has only 2TB capacity, which is super small, if that SSD would have 16TB the supposed speed would even be useful, but no 2TB SSD needs more than 1GB/s.

    Review the 1TB & 2TB Nextorage Japan NVMe PCIe Gen.4 M.2 SSD.

Curious if in the future the g5 drives and gpus of the future will battle over the pipe..

I had got 530 but it decays very fast not on regular use. Just left with 95% health

I know a great NAS that would love those.

Unless you're rocking 100+G networking, you're never going to use anywhere near the performance of even a single gen5 drive over most people's networks. Heck, assuming your NAS had multiple drives for redundancy (eg. ZFS with Raid Z1), you'd literally need multiple 100G network connections, or a 400G... so you're talking about networking hardware that's in the price ranges of 10k+ USD (100G+ switch), to 50+k USD (400G switch) minimum... let alone the network adapters. :)

@@heyitsjel As far as I am aware, random IO on SSDs wouldn't even break the Gigabit barrier. The only time you'd ever use that kind of performance you describe is only when copying a sequential set of data. The real reason SSDs shine is for random performance and it's the use-case people use SSDs for most of the time.

Cool tech, but honestly, for 99.999% of people, they'll literally notice zero difference compared to a gen4 drive. Heck, I doubt most would notice a difference compared to gen3 in everyday workloads. You can literally buy a fast gen4 drive (75%+ of the performance) that's twice as large for half the price...

raid 0 yes!! plz lol great video guys

Nvme raid is useless..but fun for benchmarking...but even with boards that can provide the lanes, it's very unstable. You need HEDT CPU to really take advantage of a nice nvme RAID setup. With an x670e board it could be doable if you utilize lanes from the chipset.

I'll stick with Gen 4. The differences with real world speeds is marginal in some cases.
