  • (Cedars vlog no. 267) Last year, 20 million people attended the "memorial" of the Lord's Evening Meal (or "Last Supper") as observed by Jehovah's Witnesses. But what happens at the "memorial?" And what motivates people to attend? I lift the lid on what goes on, and why.

I attended the Memorial once about 3 years ago. I was asked to attend in order to learn more about JW's. They read verses from the bible as if they were just trying to get through it so they could go home. I was expecting a time at the end for questions or comments, but it didn't happen. When it was over, there was no social part, no refreshments or hospitality. The message I remember was an encouragement to members to attend Bible studies. It sounded like there were many members who weren't showing up regularly. I just learned that this Kingdom Hall has been sold and members now have to travel about 20 miles in order to meet in a "consolidated" community. My experience of the Memorial was that it was boring.

She said she wasn't sure if she could do that, as it would be denying the Lord. As the bread was passed, she held it, passed it, and crossed herself. Did the same with the wine. I shouldn't have put her through that, God forgive me.

Years past I went out of respect even though I wasn’t physically in, other years I didn’t go as I didn’t want to be a hypocrite and attend one meeting only and felt that was more respectful. I was baptised in 1979 and this year I choose not to attend not only being physically out but mentally out. But I admit I still felt slightly guilty throwing the invite into the bin. Go figure, the indoctrination runs deep and I felt sorry for the ones who had put it into my letter box remembering my years past doing the same. To all of us not attending I lift my glass 🍷

I always remember how awkward it was to sit there and go through this whole ritual of "don't you dare touch the bread or wine" and passing it on like it was a bomb ticking away ready to go off any second. Every one was clearly uncomfortable, it was never a happy occasion. Most of us probably knew about what Christ said to do, yet we were not allowed to actually do, what he said he wanted us to do. Sooooooo weird!!
Clearly the main reason for this ritual put on by the Borg, for the Borg is to recruit new members (hopefully they are going through really hard times and are vulnerable)!! Face it......it's the easiest way to get unsuspecting people into the hall and start the brainwashing.

Yay! I did it! I have attended and survived The Lord's Evening Supper 2019!
Background: I'm not a Jehovah's Witness, never have been, never will be. Nor do I have any Witnesses in my family. But here in secular Scandinavia, wacky fundamentalists are pretty rare, yet they are obviously far more interesting and amusing than bland lame-duck mainstream 'Christianity'. So from a distinctly skeptical perspective, I've been paying attention to the Watchtower movement for decades.
I was at the memorial ONCE before, at some point in the nineties. As I remember the speech, it was mainly about Everything Christendom Does Wrong as regards communion. I wondered if they had updated the program after so many years.
All right, I have no invitation, when do they start? Since I have actually read tons of Watchtower books and magazines (as a kind of half-entertaining fantasy literature), I know they are supposed to be celebrating the Lord's Evening Supper on Nisan 14 according to the Jewish calendar. And the Jewish day begins at SUNSET, not at midnight. Okay, I find that in my area (near Bergen on the western coast of Norway) the sun sets at 9.32 this particular evening. They'll probably start their meeting around 9.30, then.
Shortly before 9: I put on some reasonably nice clothing not to stand out too much. No tie, though. We draw the line at ties.
9.15: I arrive at Kingdom Hall. Whaaat, they seem to be well into the program already! IT'S STILL ONLY NISAN 13, FOLKS! You are cheating!
I sneak in and find a seat at the absolute back. Probably for the best that I'm running late. They barely noticed that I came. I probably avoided much embarrassing love bombing that way.
I've brought pen and paper to make notes about the unfolding ritual.
From the outline Lloyd describes in the video, I can tell that the speaker is done with the first two points, and we reach 'Who benefits?' at 9.21. Now he is supposed to spend ten minutes talking about this. If he keeps to the schedule, sunset and Nisan 14 will be one minute away when he is done. Then, after the briefest of pauses, it will be the correct Jewish date and they can start not eating bread and decline to drink wine.
9.31: We are at the verge of Nisan 14, and the ten minutes of the outline have passed, but the speaker is still prattling on about 'Who benefits?' A guy not far from my seat pops a chewing-gum into his mouth. Can he really be a Witness? He has a BEARD, goddammit, and I wonder if Tony Morris wouldn't find his pants overly tight.
Somewhere a baby is crying, but apparently outside; Mom has wisely brought junior out of the Hall.
There are also several toddlers present, none of whom seems to give a damn about what the speaker is saying, understandably enough. But young though they are, they have already learnt to only whisper when in the Hall.
9.34: Nisan 14 is two minutes old and the speaker reaches the point 'Who partakes of the bread and wine?' The people attending are duly reminded that if they are even the slightest bit uncertain about whether they have a heavenly calling, FORGET ABOUT IT, and don't you even think about touching that bread and wine! He managed to put it more nicely, of course.
9.38: Prayer before the bread is passed around. Everybody, actually including Bearded Guy, bows their head and closes their eyes. I have the feeling that the entire room, except me, has gone temporarily blind.
The rather unappetizing bread is passed around. Luckily nobody has to actually eat it.
9.44: Prayer before the wine. Everybody goes blind again.
Some glasses of wine are passed around. The speaker editorializes about how the red wine is only symbolic of blood; ACTUAL blood is strictly forbidden for Christians. Yeah, we know.
'No, I'm driving,' I whisper as the glass passes me.
9.50: The main ceremony is over. The speaker announces that we'll be singing Song #14. 'Don't you mean 18?' another elder corrects him from the back of the Hall. Yes, it turns out that 18 was the right one. Sorry about that.
Kingdom karaoke! The lyrics are shown on a big screen, prerecorded music is played, and the people of the congregation stand up to (very feebly) sing. I remain seated. The lyrics must surely be a bold attempt to recreate some English original in Norwegian, and still make it rhyme. All in all, the results are ... not entirely disastrous.
The speaker, who has been talking about all the wonderful stuff that lies in the future (at least if you are a Witness), points out: 'Maybe you think it is difficult to believe that this is real.' Yeah, such a sentiment admittedly did occur to me.
10.01: Rambling final prayer, nice example of stream of consciousness. The meeting is ended and shortly afterwards many of the people present discover me. Attempted love-bombing ensues. Time to pull out.
And that, ladies and gentlemen, was my impression of the Lord's Evening Supper 2019!

Told her she needs to read the Bible without the Watchtower, to which she again extended invitation...apparently not listening to anything I had just said. I looked at her and said why would I come and not partake so no I would not consider coming as it is not according to scripture and please read your bible as she turned to leave she said that she does read the Bible to which I replied if you did you would follow his commandments to partake. Even the later Bible writer such as the supposed apostle paul didnt write anything about inviting spectators to such an event. It sure is funny when you bring this to their attention!

simplechicful yes I have had this discussion with many ever since I left the organization in 2014. I simply point out that in matthew 26 and Luke 22 he picked a private place alone with his disciples and it was intimate, unlike the celebration the JW's do where people are invited to observe! I point out that there is no scriptual basis for such a observance and that it should be an intimate situation and not an event for a head count. I used to ask brothers and sisters questions around the memorial season when I was still a JW elder, why we included people in this observance when Jesus didnt and neither did his disciples after him for centuries and most would say "I never really thought of it like that but I see your point", this really never sank in for any past an aha moment.

Exjws are by far nicer. Even a lot of "worldly" ppl are nicer than the nicest JW. From what I've seen and experienced.

It's also interesting that if people (ex-JW's) will attend the Memorial and partake of the emblems, that their attendance will be counted but their partaking not. Only JW's in good standing who partake of the emblems are counted as partakers and end up in the statistics.

Thank you Lloyd, you really helped me out on this one.
My boyfriend for 16 yrs (+11y/o son) are a family and my bf's mom is a jw.
She invited us for many years to the memorial and we never joined her for my bf left and was therefore at the time treated like a piece of **** by his own family.
It seems like it's not the time.
Alltough his mom faces multiple issues which my bf and 2 more ex jw, of former 5 jw children of hers take care of any of these.
Financial support as well as mental, we look after her and make regular calls etc.
She feels she's annointed and therefore only drinks water and denies new age medication, which is hard to take for she suffers arthrosis and is in pain a lot.
I once made her celery salt supplement from my garden and she rejected it for she thinks I am a witch.
It is very difficult to get along. I always felt the need to join her invite to the memorial but false hope is worse than honest compassion even if she cannot view it as such.
I will stick to my honest intention towards her, maybe some day she will accept my help.

My husband went to memorial tonight to keep the peace with family. He said at the end of the talk, the elder said: "the end is here". He was so angry he actually started shaking. So good news folks. Seems the end has finally turned and came around that corner. SMH.

  • @jimmyb3158
    @jimmyb3158 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I do think it is interesting that part of the talk is very specific instructions on who are to partake and who are not. No doubt to bring back down the number of partakers that has increased each year.

We have a friend who left long before us and she still attended the memorial and the conventions. Once we left and explained why, she stopped. Now her mom is guilty tripping her to go to the Memorial and to keep the peace, she’s going. I understand, but I think, in this case, it’s a bad idea. She’s giving her mom false hope and now that she’s going to the Memorial, she’ll ask her to go to the special talk. It won’t end. This is an almost 5o year old woman. It’s time to move on. Her mom expects her to give, but in true JW fashion, they won’t give back. She’s giving herself 50 birthday party on Saturday and her mom will certainly not go. But as for me and my household, we’re going to party. Great video as always!!!

Last year I sat there debunking in my mind (with scriptures) so many points the speaker said. The main irk I had was when the speaker said the bible tells us there are two hopes while providing no scriptural backing for the statement. And I immediately thought of this one:
Eph 4:4 "One body there is, and one spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling; 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all." Ie there is ONE HOPE.
I'm not going to sit through that again. As sad and confronting it will be for my family that are in, I just can't put myself through that again.

Watched this video to refresh my memory. Tomorrow I’m going to the memorial at my parents home through Zoom.
My plan is when the recruit talk starts, I’m going to 🚽.
Haven’t been to the memorial at 22 years. I’m only going to make my old sick father happy.
And he knows that. Then he said to me, after the memorial we will drink up the wine, haha
Thank you again for the video;)

I haven’t been to a meeting in almost half a year but tonight I promised my dad I’d go to the memorial, I told my boss I’d have to get off 30 min early and because of it I missed out an a shit ton of tips from the tables I was waiting when someone else took them over, I got my revenge tho by holding my middle finger high in the air during each prayer for the bread and the wine when everyone’s eyes were shut
and after the meeting went and stole some of the unleavened bread and ate it in the car,
    Thug life

Actually the main reason I'm not honouring the many invites is that I don't want to add to the no.
That no. , to me, is representative of those who are interested in the org.
If it's high it reinforces their ideas
I'm one less person going 🙌🏿

12:07 - Thank You!!! You know how many Witnesses argue with me saying that this is not true. They themselves don't even know what is it that they are supposed to believe.
